Went with friends from church and since I had not visited before, I took a list with all the pot sizes I wanted to fill. That proved immensely helpful because I was overwhelmed the second my feet hit the dirt! A lovely lady, Rebecca, approached and asked how she could help. She was very happy that I brought the pot sizes as well as where I intended to place them (sun/shade). In no time at all I had a wagon full and with what my friends and I purchased, my trunk space was full. Pricing is a bit on the high side but honestly, the stock is beautiful, healthy and the variety is abundant. Add in the personal attention I received and it was money well spent because a multitude of choices were offered for the specific types of plants I needed. If I wasn't really liking something she suggested, we moved on. She was so helpful! On my next visit I will take some time to browse inside the store, they had some lovely gift ideas but time wasn't on my side at that point. Such a fun outing! (As for getting there, I-65 South was fine on the way there even though a significant stretch is under construction. The return was jammed so we came back on Hwy 31. I love this place. I actually drive up to buy my trees there from Abita Springs Louisiana if you go during the spring, you can actually pick berries off of their bushes and they are delicious. read more

When it's gardening time, my car heads to Petals From the Past. This place is a hidden gem in Jemison Alabama. When visiting the first time, we got out of our car and met the owners, Jason and Shelley Powell, in our first few minutes there. Jason and Shelley are horticulturalists whose skills complement each other. Their passion is to share their knowledge and love for gardening with everyone. My first visit was for one of their events - and it was amazing. When we arrived for the event, we visited the shop first and envied their beautiful and inspiring merchandising displays. They are to die for. They had hot coffee and amazing pastries for guests. All I wanted to do was to go home and bake apple and pear pastries. Then we went out to the heated barn where the class was held. After class, we did the guided tour of the lovely garden areas. We had planned on attending every event at Petals this season, and then Covid and self-quarantine arrived... There's hope for next season as I cross my fingers and review the list of classes planned for 2021 and reserving my calendar. The Petals staff are helpful, friendly and knowledgeable about everything gardening - and Petals has been doing this since 1994. Containers, anchor plants and focal points are abundant. They have a large parking area. Prices are reasonable and they offer a discount to members of the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. If you love gardening, you will love Petals. If I lived closer, I would live there on my weekends. Highly recommend! read more

The owner was very friendly and helped select the best pots for my home from a great selection of quality pots. My first visit to this place was such a treat. I went in April when they also have their antique and craft show so it was like a "two-for-one" excited day! They have so many different versions of plants, and just about every plant I could think of I wanted. Everyone is very knowledgeable and helpful. I live in Austin, Texas and am working on replacing as much of my lawn as I can with native or adaptive drought-hardy plants. In my research, I had read about the Marie Pavie rose and decided I wanted on for my front garden, but there were none to be found in anywhere in Austin nurseries. I started searching online and found Petals From the Past, which had the Marie Pavie in stock. I admit that I am a little skeptical about ordering plants through the mail, but I really wanted this rose. The little rosebush arrived promptly and was well packed. I planted it immediately and the little bush, which had been slightly disheveled by its trip, perked up immediately. My child needed milkweed for class so they could raise monarch butterflies. Milkweed is out of season at the beginning of the school year, and I had been having difficulty finding any. Not only did Petals From the Past have quite a few to choose from, but the folks there were extremely nice, knowledgeable, and helpful. They were able to help me pick the best plants and explained how monarchs used them for their entire life cycle. It was absolutely worth the drive from Birmingham to visit this beautiful facility with it's pretty lake and landscaping! I hope to make it back when I have the time to walk around and just browse or take one of the guided tours. I walked away with both an annual and a perennial milkweed plant and a basket of fresh peaches. Because when you're in Chilton County, you have to get fresh peaches. They stop you at the county line to do a car check. Won't let you leave without them. They are yummy. read more
