Just want to give a shout out to Ashley. She is super nice and super helpful and made my overall experience so much better.

I've been a loyal customer of Petco since the 90s. That ended today with the absolute worst customer service experience I've had in a retail store pretty much ever. I really can't think of a worse experience I've had in any store, or even on the phone. I've been aggravated plenty, but today I was at first shocked at this employee's audacity, then livid at the mansplaining, sarcasm, and generally terrible attitude. I went in to buy crickets for my tarantula. I have only one, and she doesn't eat a lot. I usually purchase 6 crickets because that's all I can keep alive before she eats them. First, I waited patiently while Josh helped another customer. There wasn't anyone else in the aquatics area to get crickets for me. They also only had large crickets pre-packed 60 per bag. When Josh returned to the aquatics area, he immediately turned his back to me because I guess he didn't think it was weird that I had just been standing there by the fish for 10 minutes. So I asked him if there was anyone who could get some crickets for me. He dismissed me by saying there are already some pre-packaged. So I told him I only needed 10 of them. Visibly annoyed, he proceeded to get the crickets, all the while telling me I needed to order them online and have them delivered right to my house! I said I didn't want to do that because they almost always arrive dead. I asked what people do when they order crickets that arrive dead and then they have nothing to feed their tarantula. His response was "Tarantulas can go a while." Not the point, Josh. Not the point. Once he got the crickets into the bag, he tore off a piece of egg crate to put in there. I told him not to worry about the egg crate - I didn't want it. He put it in the bag and said "We do it anyway." (No you don't. I've bought thousands of crickets from Petco over the years, and never once has an employee added egg crate if I asked them not to, and in fact, they almost always ask if I want it or not.) I told him to take it out, and he refused. At that point he said he could just put the crickets back because I was being very rude to him. (HAHAHA!) I decided to leave rather than engage further. As I walked away I asked him for his name. (I was pretty sure I already knew it, but I wanted to be sure.) He said "It's none of your business." I called BS, walked back to him, leaned in front of him to see his name tag, confirmed his name was Josh, then I left. After I left Petco, I went around the corner to PetSmart. I generally don't go to PetSmart only because Petco is a little easier to get to, is usually a little less expensive on some things, and just out of general habit. But now I am a loyal PetSmart customer. I was waited on by a very nice young lady there who told me she'd be right with me while she finished up with another customer. There was only one cashier, and a line several people long, but it moved quickly. So as an added bonus, I won't have to wait 10+ minutes to check out at Petco anymore. read more

This is just for the store part of Petco. The store is always stocked, floors kept are clean, and the staff is kind to not just us but our fur babies too. I never have an issue finding my essentials and they have tons of alternatives if for some reason you cannot find specifics. I love that they added a vet part to it (Vetco) as I'm sure I'll be using it one day. read more

I bought what was labeled as a male guinea pig back in may just found it was a female guinea pig . She did get pregnant but thankfully Petco took fully responsibility. I did have my male guinea pig neutered. They let me know that if I find out my female guinea pig is pregnant again because there's a short window after they give birth that they can get pregnant. They'll take full responsibility for those as well. I'm happy with the outcome and knowing that the babies with get adopted into good homes! Thank you Petco and anytime I'm looking to adopt or need food for my pets this is the place I will be going. read more

And they got pissy when they detected that my wife raised her voice a little bit because she was upset about it and reasonably so. Don't waste your time unless you want to buy an overpriced & sick animal, be badgered about subscription programs or treated like an inconvenience by employees (if you can find one!). Unless you're lucky enough to get Rebeka, who is the only talented professional left, the "groomers" will chop your dog up and hand it back wet & worse looking than before you dropped it off - only to then blame your dog & still charge you for the pleasure. I took my 2 yorkie's to get groomed and after I told them how I wanted them cut and showed a picture they butchered my dogs! Never again! Meia didn't do a good job at all nor did she call me and ask if I wanted them to be cut short! Don't go here for grooming! read more

If I could give negative starts I would for the grooming department. I have had my dog groomed at a different groomer for 4-5 years. I moved and had to changed groomers. I took my dog to this Petco and had a normal experience. After the remodeling and I guess they got different groomers, everything went downhill. I dropped my dog off and within 10 minutes they said my dog was too aggressive to groom. They then told me that he has a history of being too aggressive. And I was annoyed because I told them that that's their obligation to notify me which they didn't until this appointment. Went I went to pick up my terrified and wet dog, I was greeted by an argumentative and unprofessional employee. She was putting on a show for her friends who were standing by to watch. It wasn't until the person in charge got the store manager and they actually wanted to come up a solution. They also complained about my yorkie doing yorkie things and not liking them touching her feet. They missed several of her nails. I brought back the dog who was "too aggressive" on the day they said got a vip grooming appointment which added $20 but I was willing to pay. When I dropped him off he seemed fine no signs of aggression. Not even 10 minutes after I left I got the call again. They couldn't even touch him. They didn't seem interested in grooming a difficult dog. They seemed more interested in making money and getting the dogs out. I took my "difficult dog to another groomer and everyone absolutely adores him. I guess dogs are good judges of character. read more

I've been taking my Boston Terrier here since we've moved here to the Hampton area. Everything was going great until our last two visit, has me wondering do they ever sterilize the grooming area because my fur baby has gotten sick with diarrhea and vomiting . The first case I thought the grooming area could have been the reason, but I dismissed it because he only had a nail trim and was not in there 20 minutes, after the nail trim within 24 hours he was sick for days and every one was saying a canine virus was going around, well Saturday pass 9/21/24 we had a full grooming actually had him almost 2 hours with is very unusual being he's a short haired dog, but forward to yesterday Tuesday he's not eating diarrhea and vomiting again, so I will say we've had our last visit going to the back for grooming. I've never had my pups nails clipped by anyone other than our vet groomers, she's super anxy, gets so nervous she shakes uncontrollably and acts as if she's going to pass out, so it's hard to actually clip anything without hurting her. For that reason, I was hesitant to have her nails done here as I can't hold her whilst they clip, but the lady with the awesome pink hair did such a wonderful job and was very patient with my fur baby. I'll be bro going her back for sure. (Thank you again, you were wonderful and did a great job on her nails.) We've phased out of using Merricks as they've changed their recipe ingredients, and with my pup being older, she has a hard time digesting the new recipe. Regardless, they have a wonderful food selection in here, including grain free. In other news, super happy to have found a running lead for less than $30, some places over price them because of the shock absorption. We'll see how this one works out with my beagle... Decent petco, I bought my male robo hamster here! However it just really smells bad. I went here the night before and it smelt as well but I figured it's close to the end of the day, but I went around 10am the next day and it still just has a strong odor. I know it's a "pet store" and all but never have any other Petcos or petsmart had such a strong odor. Even so, there was a beetle on the floor crawling and while in line, the customer in front of me and I noticed a big cockroach fly past lol. The staff was friendly but I think a thorough clean would be nice. read more

I am so upset I just received a phone call hours before my dogs grooming appointment telling me they will no longer groom them because of last year there was issues with their grooming not due to my fault I am not grooming the dogs they are but because there was repeated problems with their grooming they will no longer groom them. I had switched from the Hampton Petco to Newport News due to convenience in so when I made this appointment I had no idea that I was no longer welcomed in their salon. So because of the groomer not being professional (sn Ariel the groomer was the grooming manager and now isn't but still working there ??) and realizing they made mistakes maybe they need to do better on their grooming such as making sure their nails are clipped that they didn't burn the dogs with their razors they decide to tell me I'm not welcomed. So I guess the groomer cannot be professional and realize it's not a personal thing when you make a mistake or is it that she feels like she would harm my dogs because of their mistakes that they're not taking me there because I sure did pay them for every groom that they did ? It always bewilders me in the society we live in that people can't own up to their side of being an adult and a professional when you make a mistake correct it with a smile and keep going it's not personal business is never personal. Went July 10, 2020 I did not see a single employee wearing a mask, half the customers were not wearing a mask. One customer not wearing a mask coughed and did not keep 6 feet. If you want to have a safe shopping experience I recommend ordering online and doing curbside pick up. read more

It was absolutely so disgusting in there the toilet seat was left up and it was so gross underneath of the seat you could see it when sitting down. Today Cashew (6 month old Shorkie) was seen for the first time at this establishment. He is normally seen at the Petsmart on Jefferson in Newport News, however they were booked. Keeping an open mind we booked a grooming via online which allows you to pick which services you may need and/or a package. Upon dropping little Cashew off we felt pretty confident because the groomer was giving us information and tips on his coat type. To make a long story short, Cashew looked very similar to how he did upon drop off. Don't get me wrong we weren't looking for "top show dog" grooming however $57 to basically get the same looking dog prior to being groomed. The cost wasn't necessarily the issue because that's the typical cost for most grooming services. It was the lack of ownership and pride in their work. The manager Renee (who seemed rushed or annoyed by our concerns) simply used a 20% coupon that we would have gotten regardless because it was Cashew's first grooming there. If hindsight was 20/20 I'd stick with what we knew was satisfactory work. PetSmart gives you a pamphlet of how your dog did and anything in the future they think may benefit your pet. To me that shows dedication, pride, and true care for animals not just a sales transaction. Although, others may have great experiences ours did not go so well. Going forward I don't think I'd purchase anything or schedule any grooming's at any Petco locations. In closing, I do plan to reach out to corporate in regards to how the issue was handled which in turn will hopefully train the staff on how to better deal with these types of concerns/situations. read more

I had a wonderful experience at this Petco today! The store is wonderfully setup with easy to navigate aisles and clearly labeled sections. You easily flow from dog to cat to various other animals. The selection is what I love here. With other places like PetSmart you do not get the selection you do here. They don't just have one selection of various items. They have many different kinds, brands, sizes, etc. We came in here looking for a retractable leash (the one we got from PetSmart was not working well at all) and we were pleased to find displays of how the leashes work as well as MANY different options for size, color, etc. It was a wonderful selection. We also came looking for cat food. It was easy to find and decently priced. There were only a few options of flavors, but as specific as the food had to be for our cat we at least had 2 choices. The cash register experience was great as well! Really the reason I'm giving it 5-Stars. The woman who checked me out was extremely friendly, asking about our plans for the 4th of July and even suggesting somewhere to catch some fireworks! read more

I took my small dog to Petco on Jefferson ave in Newport news Va for Grooming and they cut his ears too short and cause a cut inside one of his ears and caused him to shake his ears constantly and also they trimmed his coat way too short from what I requested, which also caused a cut from the clippers in his rear and he is very uncomfortable and now taking him to our Vet to be checked out, I will take further action if needed. I talked to the manager at Petco and I will get a full refund for the grooming, but that's not the point, they never even called me on my cell phone as I requested to pick him up when he was ready and I had to call them to see if he was ready after 4 hrs to pick him up. I feel they were unprofessional and do not pay attention to details. In my opinion, I will never go to Petco again for any grooming services for my pets! read more

Came here for my Miniature schnauzer to go to the groomers and of course they messed up my dog. I ask for the breed cuts which basically is everywhere short except for there beard. (Mind you his hair was fully grown out, we just got back from a trip). And she basically shaved him Bald even his beard. Then I had ask the associated in front what happened to him and instead of her answering she just called the groomer. When the groomer came she told me he's "flaking" because what he eats..... I asked why my dog is bladed. And going on and on about his diet. What he ate gave noting to do with all his hair being gone and this "women" being the most ignorant person in this whole store which is sad because everybody else in the store I have came across was extremely nice. Very upset with the Communication from the staff and leadership. My 2nd appointment was set for 8 am this morning. When Petco scheduled my appointments the staff DID NOT explain I needed to bring documentation if I had known I would've made sure I had all documents that were needed. (I drove 12.1 miles this morning just to get nothing done) My first appointment that was made they had it on the wronged day. I scheduled VIP to pay extra and be present with my fur baby, I scheduled off from my job to be there. When I get there it was poorly scheduled (all I got was I'm sorry) I rescheduled with the grooming manager and still no communication of bringing documentation for my fur baby. I spoke with the grooming manager this morning to express my concern and let her know I am highly disappointed/frustrated in this situation and again I got I'm sorry this should've been told to all our customers and do you know who you booked with. I booked with you for my 2nd appointment since we had that problem with my 1st appointment that your staff scheduled me on the wrong date. no concerns Or regards showed from the past grooming manager and the current one. read more

I'm seeing such positive reviews and wish that I had the same experience. My dog was given to me by my sister, so she was familiar with this Petco location. I had her taken her on Sunday and the expectation of 4 hours was set. No more than an hour later, a call came through stating she was ready to be picked up. When we got there, they sent my baby home looking like this (see picture). Apparently, the manager is the one whom spoke with us was the manager. I further did a review through twitter and I guess they requested for someone from this location to contact me. During my time speaking with the two ladies whom never gave me their name as requested, I was told my route of giving feedback was "inappropriate" and that should have called the floor (but would have been the point of that ) and was given two separate reasons with no real understanding of why they sent my baby home like this. I've never felt so disrespected as a customer with me getting cut off numerous times. From here and no, me and my family will no longer we using their services. And when I say family, I mean my entire family. If you choose this location, I hope and pray they treat your pup differently than they treated mine. read more

This store is ok. In comparison to PetSmart, which is nearby, it falls short. It's a small store, so choices are limited. They don't carry large bags of my dogs food due to limited shelf space, so I don't see myself returning much. They do have a large variety of dog treats and bones, and all sorts of other doggy products. I went because I received a $7 off $30 coupon so was hoping to use it on my pups food. They did have a small bag so I got that and a bag of little bones, my total came to $27, so I turned around and grabbed a toy out of the bin behind me to get my total up to $30. That worked and after using my coupon and Petpals card, my total came to $23 and some change. So I basically got paid to get him a toy! Good deal! If only they would carry his brand of food. read more

Store is very clean, well maintained, the staff are friendly and knowledgeable. The dog trainer, Mike Campbell, is a character but a fun and interactive one. I truly enjoy his classes. He is very patient, understanding of each individual pet's needs. Amazing how good he is. We have learned so much about our dog and her behaviors/language from Mike the trainer in just 3 sessions that I am like "right there" with my doggy. The training is catching on. Our puppy has learned the following command in just 3 sessions: "Sit, Down, Come, Responding when Name is called, Stand". The prices are reasonable. This is the only pet store I go to in Hampton. I have gone to PetSmart, Pet World and others. I truly enjoy and feel at home at Petco. It doesnt even seem like a big company/corporation because they run it as if a family owns it but with a corporate process. It feels just right. read more

We were staying with family in the area and needed to grab dog food for our furry member. We traveled in a hot car for 5 hours or so and because our pup is on a raw food diet, I didn't want to bring the food to sit in the heat. So we arranged to visit the store when we arrived, so we could grab her raw food. In our area, the food that we buy is available. This store doesn't have it. I was super bummed and had to switch up her food at the last minute. I am relieved she didn't get an upset stomach and was able to adapt to the change with no issues. But huge disappointment that they carry half of the selection that other stores in MD/VA/DC carry. The employees are friendly. Store is big and overall clean. Not sure why they don't carry much of a selection. read more

I go here for all my dog supplies, everything from food to toys and I get my two dogs groomed here also. They having amazing grooming staff and are very informative on what to do to keep your dog and their skin healthy. The floor staff is very helpful also when they have enough people on the floor. I always have questions on what I should get or what's best for what. I am definitely staying a regular for me and my puppies. read more

About 3 times a year Petco has a dollar per gallon sale on tanks/aquariums. It's a great deal. We went Friday night and picked up a 20 gallon tank for snake. Snake is an eastern hog nose. He's kind of mean, but I'm bigger than him, so ha! Petco as a whole has a much nicer setup than any petsmart I've been too. The downside is we have to go over the river and through the woods to get to the nearest store. It's not too far, but when pet smart is a hop, skip and a jump - the answer is obvious. read more

Our favorite Pet store when we lived in H-Town. The staff here is always friendly and hilarious. I tend to frequent places that has people that makes my day. Anyways, this Petco is just like every other petco. It is a bit smaller inside than the Norfolk location. They do have a small snack bar with some, but sometimes limited, raw hides. They always have what we need in stock and even special deals for Petco Pals rewards members! Plus 5% back on every $100 purchase is great! So if you plan to visit any Petco, SIGN UP for one! My only con is that I wished they stocked Taste of the Wild for my pup. It would save me the extra stop to CareALot. read more

Called to make a grooming appointment. Did not feel my business was priority when the employee was speaking to me. I asked if they had availability for the same day- "No". I asked when the next available appointment was- "Monday I Think". When I asked what time on Monday I was told she didn't know and she would have to place me on hold because she was with a dog that wasn't especially fond of getting on and off of the table. Okay, I'm sorry, I didn't realize you were in a service when I called... there really was no reason to be rude... and she was. So I was placed on hold long enough for the phone to start ringing again. When she answered again I had to remind her she put me on hold and I was calling to schedule an appointment... so we start the set up of the appointment at which point she informs me my dogs rabies vaccine is expired in their system. Dang... okay my fault I apologize and tell her I will call when her shots are updated. Fast forward to the mobile shot van. I have never used their service but thought I'd give it a shot (no pun intended)... I arrive 20 mins into their scheduled time and the mobile van has yet to arrive. I get in line there are 10 dogs ahead of me. About 15 mins go by and there is an announcement that the mobile unit will be an hour late. So they take names, phone numbers and assign us a number according to the order we were in line. We are told we will be given a call when the van arrives and we will keep our place as long as we return within 15 mins of the call. I get out of line but do not leave the store... 15 mins later I get the phone call and tell the caller I haven't left the building... at which point I have still not seen the van arrive so I continue walking around... more time passes and more people arrive. They are told to get in line. I then attempt to find out when I will be called to the van and witness people in line being taken ahead of me. I then find the woman who took the names and called me and ask if we are being called in order and she says no, that we were supposed to get back in line. What?!? Why would you go through the trouble of making a list if we should have stayed in line? All this time I've been walking around their store collecting things to purchase and I have to get back in line. NOPE. So I leave. My recommendations for the mobile vaccine events: 1. Be on time. It is my understanding that every event van is at least one hour late. Stick to your schedule Petco... it isn't fair to continue taking pets at your previous location while people are lined up waiting for you at the next. 2.There should be a sign up sheet, or a take a number process... it is unreasonable to expect that many dogs to wait patiently in line within close proximity to other fussy dogs... especially when the van is late. Consider making it a rule that a line may form to receive the number if you arrive more than 30 mins before the scheduled arrival, but that numbers will be given beginning 30 mins prior and you will be called in order of your number. If you choose to leave the building (idk maybe because sometimes dogs need to have a walk) as long as you have returned when they call your number you will not lose your place. 3. Consider having the clipboards and paperwork available before the arrival of the van. It will allow for a shorter wait time. 4. If the take a number option is not an option, consider offering more seats to people waiting in line for hours... I personally will not attempt, unless a better system is put in place, to return for shots with the mobile event. I would much rather pay a local Vet three times the amount I'd pay with Petco for the convenience of an appointment... as for the grooming I like that they have the specialty bath scents but otherwise they aren't spectacular at grooming... I'll find a better place for that... as for other essentials I'll visit their competitor in the PTC across the street. read more

So after my last horrible visit here I was forced to do business here again. Unable to find what I needed in the store, I called the Newport News Store and Williamsburg store. Looking for a hoodlamp for my fishtank I called the Hampton store first. They did not have it in stock and suggested I go to Norfolk ( I live in Hampton mind you). Called the Newport News store and I kept getting disconnected. Finally got through and they did not have the part. They did not offer to help me any further. Finally the Williamsburg store. They actually took the time to check in the back stock room for the part. I explained my experience witht he previous two stores and they expressed their sincer appologizes. Not sure of the other services in the store or with this store but my experience is bad everytime. Ill be sticking with Pet Smart. Yes they are a little more expensive but I can get better service than this there. read more
