Found what I was looking for, hermit crabs! This store appeared very clean! The exterior is very nice but the store overall was just so crowded and not spaced well. They did training check in at the very front of the store so we had to walk around a lot of people and then held the training for the dogs, right in front of the car adoption section so we couldn't see if they had cat or not. We really wanted to check out the cats. Overall a great visit, just will have to return before training hours! Great prices! read more

Disappointed with the Petco Grooming professional today. Partly my fault because I didn't hold out for our usual, Ms. Emily (who is fantastic!). My pup is very anxious, and today she was especially nervous to go back. I let the groomer know she has anxiety. I was told ~3 hours for her bath, de-shed, nail trim & tooth brush (which is typical), so I was surprised when I got a call 2 hours later. We went to pick up our pup and was told she hurt herself in the kennel (from anxious behavior), and the groomer said our pup didn't like the blow dryer (ok...there's also something called a towel...). We were highly discouraged to come back for baths, which really rubbed me the wrong way. Our pup is NOT people-aggressive and I feel like these problems were caused by the groomer's inexperience and possible lack of empathy when dealing with anxious dogs. Our pup came out highly stressed today. When she's groomed by Ms. Emily we've never had any issues. I will either only make sure she's groomed by Ms. Emily from now on, or we'll maybe take our business elsewhere. read more

I brought my kitty for her rabies vaccine. First time trying a clinic..check in was quick and then when we were bringing her in the exam room they stopped my son and I and said we were not allowed to go in. I have never heard of that..I expressed that we always reassure her as she is a very nervous cat. They closed the area off and told us NO. They were rude as well. Never leave your dog at Petco for grooming in Newport News. They could not handle my husky snd started shaving her. I gave permission for the legs only and she came out after many phone calls from them, looking like a poodle! They just want to be quick and shave every dog! They shaved her legs, her butt and up her back. I took her then to Muddy Marleys where their kind staff groomed her beautifully and said there was no need for shaving. This review is for grooming services. I do not recommend this Petco location for grooming services. I brought in both my dogs, Bo (German sherpherd/husky mix) and Mamba (French Bulldog) for a groom. My husband relayed that our larger dog, Bo, was not fond of the blow dryer and kennel. Bo has anxiety when it comes to the crate and I am very particular about his grooming services because of this. I am upfront with any groomer about my dog's special needs because I want to see to it that he's taken care of and will eventually enjoy going to the groomer and it will not be as stressful for him as he tolerates it more. Knowing how Bo is, we asked that we receive a call before pick up. When our fur baby was finished with his groom, we were notified after he was done; this meant that they needed to hold Bo in a crate before we got there. Upon pick up, they relayed that he was fine with the groom and ended up using the blow dryer on him, but he broke out of the kennel while waiting for us to arrive. Again, they notified us that he did fine during the groom but they also mentioned it would be best if Bo not return and suggested Bo gets grooming services at a Vet where they have commercial kennels that can keep him safe after his groom. I was very disappointed with their services because they failed to take into consideration what we had said about him. Knowing my dog, I am up front about all of the caveats to him getting groomed because I want him to have the best experience at a groomer we take him to. This Petco grooming service left my fur baby stressed and did not take what we said into consideration. If they didn't feel equipped to handle his needs, I would have been fine with them declining services for Bo and just take my frenchie in instead. However, they relayed it would be fine and I mistrusted them. I am writing this review for dog owners whose pets have special circumstances. My Yorkiepoo is getting up in age and has started having some joint pain which is very new for me . I stopped by the Newport News location for a dog food run and I didn't intend on purchasing anything else. As I arrived at the register I was greeted by Emily who was so friendly and sweet. I took a long shot and asked her if she knew anything about vitamins for dogs to help with their joints and she stopped and said "oh yeah, let me show you!". We walked to aisle and she shared with me a story about her dog that was up in age like mine and how these vitamins that she recommend to me helped her pet. So of course I added them to my cart!! She eased my worry and even recommend a natural product that I already have at home for my dog!! I am so appreciative of her! I hope to see Emily again the next time we stop by! read more

They had what we needed, although their catnip selection isn't that great but OMG the cashier, Gabe, TRASH CUSTOMER SERVICE!! We try not to walk up to a register unless the cashier tells us to, we know sometimes it takes a second to get situated,especially during covid, but he wouldn't even acknowledge us. And my husband was carrying a heavy cat tree. Gabe just Literally stared into the distance in the opposite way. I asked if he was ready for us and he looked so annoyed and looked at us like we're dumb.. his whole demeanor, you could just tell he hated being there and hated his job. Either the manager wasn't there today or they just DGAF here.. train your staff to at least fake it! Or don't hire people who clearly don't care. Brought my German shepherd Kally there today to get de shedded bathed and pampered. Well it was not great! She is shedding all over worse then when I brought her in so don't waste the extra $40 for that treatment. Nails were barley trimmed and not filed or buffed at all. Ears were only cleaned at the top I had to finish with a cotton ball. Teeth look ok but I keep them really clean so I don't think she had any buildup. Doesn't smell great like when she comes home from other groomers. Pretty sure they just gave her a quick bath and threw her in a kennel to dry. Don't go here it's a waste of money and you will be better off elsewhere. read more

Petco is a very nice pet store located off of Jefferson Avenue in Newport News. When I first walked in, I noticed right away how clean everything was and also how organized the different sections were. They have supplies for dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, mice, hamsters, ferrets, reptiles, fish, and amphibians. We had a fun time just browsing around and watching the different live animals they had on site. They had some great clearance pricing the day I was there as well and I was able to scoop up several deeply discounted dog items. The staff here was friendly as well, there were plenty of cashiers as well as people walking around asking if anyone needed any help. There was also a dog training class going on while we were there, which was interesting to watch. I think this is a great pet store and maybe even a bit cheaper than PetSmart. read more

Grooming salon is absolute trash. Not only is the customer service terrible but they are unorganized and wasted my time. I asked 2 days before my pets appointment if there was any other paperwork she needed and they told me she was good to go. I prefer Petco before Petsmart or any other pet supply store. But this particular Petco is disapointing. For dog and cat owners...you have nothing to worry about. But for small and exotic pets...I would go somewhere else. I bought a teddy bear hamster here and a couple of days later I noticed it wasn't doing well. I took it to the vet and it had a parasite. The 10 dollar hamster ended up dying. Petco refunded my money but only paid half of the 200 dollar vet bill(for a hamster!). They removed the litter of hamsters I bought mine from to observe their health...but when we returned two days later they were back on the shelf looking like they had wet-tail. Go to a different Petco around Hampton Roads, that's my solution. read more

PETCO in Jefferson Commons in Newport News is a large pet store caters to different standard pet owners. They have beds, toys, treats, and the standard fare for pets ranging from dogs to parrots. They don't cater to anything particularly exotic, but that's okay. Dogs, cats, birds, hamsters, gerbils, ferrets, rabbits, fish, lizards, snakes... these kinds of animals all have different sections for them. And of course there are animals for sale, mostly smaller animals like lizards and fish, but also a small assortment of dogs and cats. The place is reasonably clean, which is always nice, and it does not smell like a run-down animal store. Also, people may bring in their dogs on leashes as they look around. This is a pretty nice touch so you can bring Pooch before you buy something he might not be interested in at all. The staff seems friendly and knowledgeable, and they even have a grooming section. The prices for grooming are about double what you should pay if you can find a local groomer that's decent at their job, but it's still there should you need it. read more

I took my dog to get a nice haircut and NOT shaved as it is bad for his breed's skin. We picked him up and he is choppy, uneven, SHAVED, and his head is not at all blended with the rest of his body. I've tried to get ahold of a manager to speak to about this but yet I'm waiting to hear back on day three. They also didn't give my dog any water or taken out at all. He is an old pup and. I have been to this location in Newport News, VA a handful of times and have experienced issues with each of these visits. One time I stood in the cat tree section waiting for someone to help me get a scratching post off the top shelf for 30 minutes! I asked for assistance 5 times and there was only one poor girl running the register by herself and she appeared to be the only one in the store. I left and went to Petsmart. I am a cat rescuer, so yes I use lots of coupons. I have been told a few times when coming in here that they will not accept my coupons or they give me a hard time about using the coupons. When I question this they either do not give me an answer or say, "I just work here." One day I was looking for Purina and couldn't locate it so I asked for assistance. The lady said to me in a disgusted tone, "We don't usually carry foods like THAT in this store." Nonetheless, I found the Purina. Once I noted that the litter box I bought did not ring up half price and when I informed the cashier she stated, "Look, I don't feel good today. I'm having a bad day." Um okay, that has nothing to do with you fixing the price of the litter box. I love the foods that Petco carries and that is why I unfortunately go in there. I purchase a specific dietary restriction cat food that one of my cats is required to eat so I have visited this location more times than I can count. Positive aspects: This PETCO is clean and well-stocked. Live pets are reasonably priced. Negative aspects: Pricing is horrid on most other items. SO expensive. Go down the street to PetSmart and you will be surprised by the variances. Staffing is non-existant; most times the cashier has to leave the register unattended to assist customers on the sales floor. I've heard a ton of horror stories regarding their (medical) treatment of small pets, but I've yet to experience these first-hand. And most notably, the store manager is absolutely obnoxious. I've had two separate experiences with him, and both were extremely negative. In my first encounter, he was forced to grab a fish for me due to an apparent lack of staff. I was specific about the fish I wanted, stating that either of a specific two amongst the group of six would be preferred, as the other four had tattered fins and did not look healthy. Hey, considering that I was spending $20 on a saltwater fish, which do not come with any sort of guarantee, I don't feel this is much to ask. He was quick to respond with an attitude, asserting that I "wouldn't be able to tell the fish apart if they were in a line-up." Obviously, I could, because only two visibly appeared healthy. After he netted my fish, I asked about the water parameters of their fish system, so that I could ensure that the fish could have as smooth a transition as possible. He stated that the specific gravity (salt density) was 0.00, which is that of pure freshwater. I politely asked him to verify and explained that, as they are saltwater fish, I would be surprised if they were kept in freshwater long-term. Once again, he quickly snapped back and told me that I was wrong, then walked away. In the second experience, I walked into the store with a cup of frozen yogurt that I had just purchased from a nearby establishment. I made sure to look for signs on the building's exterior concerning food and drink-- there were none. This same store manager stopped me while I was quietly admiring the fish,and explained that I could not eat/drink inside. I told him that I understood, and mentioned that I looked for signs prior to entering. He then rambled on about how it is actually for my safety that they enforce this policy, as "bacteria from the animals" could infect the yogurt. As he was attempting to explain this, an employee was casually walking in close proximity with an open soda in her hand. Really? I did not put up a fight, but I honestly felt that the store manager was giving me a hard time simply because he could. Considering this location has a limited number of customers as it is (it's too expensive!), it's mind-boggling to me that the store manager is so unpleasant. Ah well-- these two experiences alone were enough to steer me away from this location forever. I do NOT recommend this store, at all. read more

Had this 1 experience not happened to me, I'd probably have given 4 stars. After my monologue you'll understand why I needed to bump it up one. A week before my puppy's first birthday we ventured to Petco to let her pick out a few of her favorite toys. I was prepared for a little chaos, but I was not prepared for this situation that I'm sure is going to be scripted for a B list Hollywood actress sometime soon. We walk into the store and a mean dog has escaped his leash and the staff rush over to save the dog the escapee was after. Luckily there was only a bite, and no real harm. Me and puppy we bystanders. As we progress into the toy section my puppy makes friends with a dog that is "more of a people person". The owners were attentive and there was no real aggression, so we moved on. My puppy is very good at listening unless there is a dog around, in which case she is highly invested in making new friends. As we continue to walk down the middle of the store letting her sniff the area, puppy decides she needs to poop in the main aisle. Trying to hold on to her and protect the other store shoppers from her mess until I can clean it up, I try to blockade the area. Well, my puppy, being the lady that she is, is terrified of her own poop and runs the other direction escaping her collar and me falling backwards into her poop as the force I'm restricting gets released. One clerk catches my puppy, another catches me inches from being covered in poop while the clerk I had seen first ran to the back to get me paper towels. I'm very disappointed with the fish I just bought two days ago from this Petco. I've had the same tank with the same fish for over a year and finally decided I'd add to my fishy family. And I come home from work just now and the 5 new fish I bought have infested my tank with pop eye and ick. Resulting in all 15 of my fish dying or being very close to death. I came in tonight to surrender a cage full of rats that I had found and could not keep myself. An employee told me she had to speak to her manager about them keeping them & that I could walk around the store & she would let me know what the manager said. Tracy the "manager" shortly came up to me and told me they "don't sell rats" and can't & wont take them from me. I let her know that I have no place for all of them and I would have to return them to where I found them. She said that's animal neglect & I couldn't do that & she refused to take them. I let her know I had no way of taking them anywhere else and that I had already asked around if anyone could take them and I had no luck, so that's why I was trying to give them up. Once again I was told she couldn't help me and wouldn't take them. An employee told me she was trying to get in touch with another manager to find out if they could keep them over night and take them to the shelter the next day, while I waited Tracy said to her "if we keep them they're all staying in that cage", this cage had 9 grown rats and 6 babies. She clearly couldn't care less what happened to them. The employee informed her that they would chew threw the plastic and escape & Tracy said no matter what they weren't going in the back OR getting separated into another cage. (I then asked this employee if they sold rats at the location because I was told otherwise, and she assured me they did )After awhile of waiting around Kelly, the other manager, said they could keep the rats. Tracy then told me I needed to "move out of her way" bc she "needs the whole area" where the rats were placed. So I decided it was time to leave the store. The doors had already been locked by her and closed and I waited by the doors for her to let me out, and she told the other employee she needed to open them for us, EVEN THOUGH the employee was the only one doing anything helpful for these animals and Tracy acted so inconvenienced that they were even around. She should not be working with animals or people for that matter. She was rude and basically told me it's not her problem. I shop at this location for all of my pet needs. I come here at least once a week. I've never been treated bad by an employee so for the manager to act like this is crazy. I will definitely be calling corporate because this store needs to be under new management. read more

I enjoy bringing the dog here to grab food, treats, or even grooming. The staff is always exceptionally nice. Grooming does a fantastic job. Minus one star because the DIY dog wash is pretty sad. One little bay with a clunky crappy nozzle and hardly a towel to dry with! I feel bad if the staff has to use it too. They also let you train your pet there. There is this little room that you can train your pet in. Did I mention you can ask a worker to cut your pets hair? That's right! You can! Impressed!! Took my two dogs to Petco off Jefferson Ave in Newport News on 11/12/14 to get groomed. I received a call from the manager of grooming, Stephanie, who informed me that my little dog Mordecai had gotten a clipper burn on the side of his face. She was concerned and apologetic and assured me that his grooming charge would be removed. The gal that accidentally made the clipper burn was crying when I got there. She was so upset and concerned. I have had this little guy groomed many times in the past 12 yrs at different groomers. He has gotten multiple clipper burns and NEVER have I had a groomer express concern about it. Usually I found the burn after I got home. I've never even had a groomer acknowledge they accidentally hurt my dog much less express genuine concern and 'make it right.' I will not hesitate to take Mordecai back to this groomer and 'yes' the same apprentice. She genuinely cared about my dog. Also....I had a woman who thought I had 'cut her off' in traffic while I was on my way to Petco. She was chasing me and yelling at me while riding my bumper and racing her motor all the way there. I didn't park in the lot, but pulled up to the front doors of the store under the. lights for safety. She pulled up next to me and started screaming and threatening me. I picked up my cell phone to call 911 and she sped off. I was somewhat rattled to say the least. The grooming manager walked with me outside and stayed there until I drove away with my dogs to make certain there was no more danger. What can I say? Small town care in the big city!!!
