Had been running around all morning doing errands so was happy to see a restroom here. It's DISGUSTING. Has to be a health hazard. I wonder when the last time the floors were mopped. So gross. So I've gone to the Petco in Dover, and had perfectly fine experiences there. But one day, they're full, and its about a 10 minutes drive to this Petco- in Portsmouth. So I make an appointment for my dog, Penny, a mini schnauzer for Grooming. I pick her up, she seems to look fine, put her in the car but on my way home I notice blood all over my hands. I pull over- BOTH of he ears were VERY badly sliced. And I mean straight slices, like theres no way she could of done it herself. I get home, call the store and a girl at the Groomer who did her (she was the manager of the Grooming section, by the way) tells me she didn't notice any sort of cuts. (Which I think is a lie, because there was some petroleum jelly on her ears where they obviously tried to stop the bleeding). She then says to me, "Look I've been a groomer for 15 years so I know what I'm doing." Furious, I hang up- call the Corporate Headquarters. I email them pictures of the sliced ear, and they agree, this is a grooming Cut. The ACTUAL Store manager calls me (not the grooming manager), and apologizes and comps Penny's haircut, and offers her next one free. Now to be fair, the Store Manager really did everything she could of this situation, but it was too late and I was really upset already by my conversation with the Groomer. Now I did take up their offer for a free grooming, but I was pretty cautious about it. They said that Penny nonstop was biting the Groomer-- which DUH because now she's terrified after she got cut before. It's now MONTHS later, and I've taken her to several different groomers and now the second they pull out clippers or scissors, she bites. And my dog has NEVER bitten before. THANKFULLY, I just recently took her to K-9 Kaos and they were able to groom her, I explained the situation and they went INCREDIBLY slow with her, took breaks constantly, and really worked with her for no extra charge. And thats amazing. She was finally able to get through a grooming without biting. read more

We bought a blue harness (to prepare for a puppy we didn't yet have). We thought we would get a male dog then we found out we were getting a female. Tried to return the NEVER USED harness, as we still don't have the puppy and they wouldn't even let us return it! Shame on you Petco! I've never had a problem with any of our local businesses or merchants but today at Petco on Woodbury Ave was a first! We are regular customers at Petco, buy our dog food and purchase pet supplies there and recently started to have our 2 dogs bathed, dried and brushed over in their grooming department. I had called Petco on Saturday and made an appointment via a groomer named Alex. Our appointment was scheduled for today, Monday, June 18th at noon. I arrived today at noon with both of our dogs and walked over to the grooming area desk. Once an associate looked up from her work and another assoc. walked over, I was expecting to be greeted with a "hello, how are you today? After announcing myself, I was verbally accosted by the assoc. "Ashley." She was angry and put off and took great delight in telling me that my appt was on Father's Day and I was a no show! She's young and I'm in my 60's. I'm not accustomed to having anyone speak to me that way or in her tone and her rage escalated when I replied that I made the appt on the phone with Alex on Sat. Now the "too busy to greet a customer with 2 dogs standing in front of her associate named "Lisa" chimed in and told me I had no appt today that it was for Sunday, I missed it and that they left messages for me with their manager named "Holly." When I tried to speak, whether to fact find or understand why they were being so rude, they would both argue and yell at me more. Ashley took great pleasure in taking out her anger on me and told me they left messages for me. So I checked my cell messages and my recent calls as their was not one voice message from Petco and I did have 2 missed calls on Sunday from Petco. That's it. I told her that I was no longer going to try to sort her problem out with her. I was done. She was drawing attention to horrible customer service practices from other customers and I could feel my blood pressure rising. At that point, Ashley stormed off threatening to get her manager! I thought, Great! A manager came over, said nothing. The moment she arrived, Lisa was now as nice and polite as could be and the store manager (or MOD, wouldn't know bc she never introduced herself to me) went over to the grooming area cash wrap and busied herself. I rescheduled my dogs appts with "sugar coated" compliant Lisa who's Mgr was right there and left with my two very patient pups. While driving back home all I could think is.. If these two employees are comfortable behaving so incredibly rude and loudly arguing with a customer (who was only trying to figure out their miscommunication point since this was both of their ONLY concerns, NOT concerned about my pups or making things better by moving on with a smile!!) it made me wonder, How do these two women treat our beloved pets once the door closes behind them???? I love Petco! I take my Siberian Husky there for grooming and they are always happy to see her. We also got our fish from this store and they do take them back if they die within the return period (we had a few that did). I learned a lot from the people in the fish department about my tank and taking care of my fish. Now we have baby fishies and I'm enjoying it every day. The only thing I don't like is Petco doesn't honor their online prices, which are sometimes lower, even if you bring in a printed copy of the item and their Internet price. If they'd change that policy, I'd give Petco five stars! read more

Ya know.....was there the other day and had stepped up to the six foot mark and was told immediately to go back another twenty feet.I stated to the clerk that the state emergency orders have expired.She again told me to move.I at this time identify myself as a Deputy health officer and reminded her of state is no longer in effect.Did nt matter to her she was going to tell me that it is her store rules......I respect the six foot rule...I get it...but twenty feet? As a side note...found the store to be a dump...stock on pallets in isle..very unkept.Will not EVER shop this company again. read more

Was supposed to get a "Welcome to the Family" coupon pack and the store was out. The manager was extremely rude and was "unable" to give us the discounts that were supposed to come with the coupon pack. Being a previous manager with Petco, this is in fact a lie. I bought 2 guinea pigs and bought everything I needed for them. I had them for about a week and a half made sure everything very comfortable for them in their new home. The last few days with them I noticed that something wasn't quite right with them. One of them started loosing some fur on her nose and the other ones eyes kept shutting so I would clean her eyes. Once I brought this to my grandma we brought them back so they could see their vet. But we had to get a refund so they could see their vet. So I went back the next day to see how they were doing I was informed that one of them had died. And the other had ring worm but that's not what it looked like to me. And the manger said that we could use a cream for athletes foot. I was talking to my grandma and she said no vet would just have me bought an athlete foot cream. Then she was telling us we should buy this spray but it wasn't specific to what it kills so didn't buy it and brought everything that was in the cage back. I won't be buying an animal there again I'm gonna to an spca to buy a healthy guinea pig. read more

This is the best petco I've been to for SW fish. The selection isn't vast but there's one young employee there that really knows her stuff!! Very nice to know that there's someone who knows what they're doing. They also have a coral frag tank which is rare in the area and so awesome! I'm taking off a star only because their SW supply area is pretty sparse and they could do with more product there. So it's not a one stop shop but worth checking out. read more

I had a great experience with Stephanie at the Portsmouth Petco. She bathed both of my large Labs and did an especially great job with my older guy, Spike, who has severe skin peeling and flaking. She spent a long time with him, removing as much of the flakiness and possible and used the prescribed shampoo, conditioner, and ear cleaner I brought. Both my boys haven't looked or smelled this great in a long time. read more

So funny - I had a horrible experience at Petco after being a loyal grooming and shopping customer for 2 years. I shared the experience with the Yelp community in The form of a review in the hopes that others could avoid such inconvenience. Petco immediately responded publicly so the social media community would think they wanted to "seek to Understand" and maybe fix the issues. In reality they did nothing haha. Buyer beware. There are many other places to get these products and services. At least for us, that is the better option. Disappointed by Petco twice. read more

This store is understaffed. A typical wait for a fish associate can be 20-25 minutes. The store is usually clean however and well stocked. That being said, the grooming staff is simply atrocious. They refused to groom my mother's five pound, five month old Shih tzu because she was "biting." They also refused to groom one of my rescues because he was "vicious." After taking both of these dogs to private groomers, I was told the Shih tzu was "wiggly" and "nipping at the brush," but never their hands or fingers, and they did a fabulous job nonetheless. As the Petsmart groomer said, "She's a puppy, for heaven's sake." I was told the rescue dog "screamed like a girl who sees a mouse" the whole time, but after putting in some earplugs, the groomer had no problem whatsoever, stating he was "submissive, friendly, and although afraid, he was not aggressive in any manner. I never felt any threat from him." I brought a rescue Cairn terrier in to have her "stripped," which any groomer knows means you have a tool that you pull through the hair to remove all the dead hair. When I went to pick her up, she was shaved down; the groomer had not known what I was asking for. Ridiculous! I decided to give them one more try wih my Cockatzu a year later, since I was in town and all he needed was a bath package. They gave him the wrong package, charged the wrong fee, and forgot to clip his nails. It seems like Petco has so many clients they can afford to not take the time with any kind of dog beyond a bath and a haircut -- which they also fail at. It also seems that their training is lacking. I think they need some training on grooming procedures and terms, and also how not to be afraid of dogs--how to take the time to evaluate a dog's behavior on a realistic basis and not jump the gun. Not a professional salon at all in my opinion. read more

Had my puppy nails cut and ask to have her bangs trimmed. She took off all her bang!!!! I could have done that!!! And cut around her eye didn't ask for this thanks for making my dog look awful!!! I was very disappointed in my experience at this Petco location on 2/2/18. One of my guinea pigs died recently and I was interested in looking at the baby female guinea pigs. I wasn't going straight home so I couldn't buy her that day, but would come back if she was a good fit. I asked to hold them and a lady with shorter blondish hair came over. She was obviously disgusted with having to stop what she was doing to come help me. She started to open the cage and asked if I was really going to buy one. I told her not today but maybe soon. She then claimed that one of the three of them was sick because of human contact. She said she didn't want to let me hold them unless I was buying one because I could pass illness on to them. It is hard to decide if you want a pet without handling her first. I am very experienced guinea pig owner and none of them looked sick. I have owned guinea pigs for seven years. I told her I guess I didn't want them because of her claims of illness. She shut the cage and quickly took off. Very rude! My reason for writing this negative review is for the sake of the guinea pigs. I am concerned about this store keeping them all together if one of them is actually sick. It is only common sense that the sick animals are separated from the healthy ones. I also want to know why they are for sale if they are ill. They should be seen by a vet. The vet I use for my small animals is right across the street from this store. read more

The employees seem nice, helpful, and some of them seem really knowledgeable. Their rewards program is also really nice; getting deals and coupons through e-mail and other discounts in the store. Extremely unprofessional employee (she might have been a manager but not sure, she was the only employee without a Petco shirt/uniform or name tag on) I was taking photos of fish to potentially add to my tank but need the info on the tag to make sure they will work with my current fish/setup. 3 employees on the floor saw me snapping photos of tags and asked if I needed any help at that time which I declined - not one of them commented on me taking photos. Then I hear someone shouting from across the store (at least 15 feet away from me) which I ignored assuming it did not have to do anything with me. Then the shouting is getting increasingly louder so I turn around and a woman comes up and rudely announces "Hey, you can't do that!!" Confused, I ask what she is referring to and I am told that I am not allowed to take ANY photos inside the store, even if it is something I am planning on purchasing including the price tag but especially no photos of any animals. I would expect an employee to come up to me and address me directly rather than yelling it through the store which got the attention of all of the other shoppers. I have done this before when researching pets and have never had any issue at another location. If it is in fact their policy, that is fine - but being someone that works in customer service she was 100% unprofessional on the way she addressed the issue. I won't be going back to this location. (There were many dead fish floating in multiple dirty tanks at the store so that could've had something to do with it!) read more

I brought my dog into the Portsmouth Petco for grooming on 12/31/11 and had a horrible experience. My boy is a fully little Tibetan spaniel and, Stella, the "groomer" did a hack job on his ears, did trim his feet but missed clipping one nail and didn't bother touching the remainder of his furry little body. She claimed he was skittish and stressed out which was most likely the case but if she was obviously uncomfortable she SHOULD HAVE told me that rather than do what she did to him. When I picked him up he was still damp and she told me about his ear fur and claimed that "it wasn't noticeable" so I gave her the benefit of the doubt. Once he dried and I saw what the poor little guy looked like I was appalled. IT WAS NOTICEABLE and it was also NOTICEABLE that she didn't bother trimming him. I called and complained; although I did get my money back the two managers were completely sleazy about the entire experience. They both tried, repeatedly, to get me to book another grooming for my dog with a different trainer. No way am I EVER going to bring my dog into the Portsmouth Petco for another "grooming." read more
