If you still want to come here just be aware that the directions may take you on the opposite side of the overpass and you can park and just walk across. Word on the street is that the Monumental Kitty works just like the Sphinx: if you don't answer his riddle he gets to eat you. During my latest visit to Corktown I visited him every morning, to feed him by incorrectly answering his riddle. But, selfless cat that he is, he let me live. It's an appropriate symbol of Detroit's fighting spirit and civic engagement that such an inspired sculpture took control of the pedestrian overpass even as the old Tiger Stadium across the I-75 got blasted into rubble. Thanks to the vision and technical skill of North Corktown artist Jerome Ferretti, the efforts of neighborhood volunteers, some funding from local businesses, and a very successful Kickstarter campaign, this nine-foot-diameter cat head is as good as nine-foot-diameter cat heads get.

Well, it's precisely eight miles from this very spot. After the 1805 fire, Judge Augustus Woodward redesigned Detroit with a radial street plan centered on Campus Martius. The Point of Origin was established as the zero-mile marker for the city's new layout. Look for a round glass porthole in the sidewalk near the Woodward Fountain. Beneath it lies a white stone medallion--Detroit's official zero-mile marker. I've been to the Zero Milestone in Washington DC, the Zero Mile Stone in Norfolk Virginia, Il Panzerotto in MIlan Italy, Kilometre Zero Marker in Madrid Spain and Zero Zero in Lisbon Portugal. All of that to say, "Why is there a monument to Alexander Macomb in Detroit?" Well, Macomb was a hero of the War of 1812. Born here in the city (which was at the time a British-held territory), he joined the United States Army in 1799 and rose to the rank of Brigadier General during the Battle of Plattsburgh and eventually earned a Congressional Gold Medal for "gallantry and good conduct" and eventually a promotion to commanding general of the army in 1828. As a local hero, of course Detroiters are going to honor the man. The statue depicts Macomb standing tall with a wind-blown cape and looking toward the Detroit River. It is allegedly made with cannons captured during the war. It's way impressive and a terrific honor for a local citizen who went on to great things. This is a beautiful building with an excellent location in downtown Detroit.  I am looking forward…read moreto the redevelopment of this building in particular, or, in worse case scenario, whatever ends up here.  There is plenty of parking.  It is easy on and off to three major freeways.  The utilities in the area are first rate and being put in to a world class state.  The building is classically built with large emblazoned letters on it announcing 'Loyal Order of Moose'.  If you are looking for a great place to settle your office or set up a branch over the next few years this is an opportunity not to be missed. "This building opened in 1922 and was designed by the firm Baxter, O'Dell & Halpin. The building has been vacant for decades, including 10 years under ownership of the Ilitch family, which paid $1.5 million for it in February 2007. In 1994, there were plans to turn the lodge into a nightclub, but that idea never came to fruition. In August 2017, Olympia Development of Michigan filed with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality a document calling for asbestos cleanup at the 45,000-square-foot building noting that it was headed for rehab."

The Penobscot building is a historical, gorgeous building located on Griswold. It's been around…read moresince 1905. It houses the Caucus Club, one of the last of Detroit's 40's-esque restaurants. I have an adoration for historical buildings -- all the stories and characters they contain, which is why I wanted to peek into the Penobscot. The interior has gold and marble detailings. The lobbies also have beautiful detailings and artwork that have been preserved. Today, in the building you'll find a post office, a nail salon, clothing boutiques, an apothecary, a place that sells fine wines -- definitely worth a browse. The building is named after the Native American tribe, Penobscot.

This muscular man near the Detroit River is the Spirit of Detroit. It is cast bronze with a green…read morepatina that could be copper but isn't. He's 26 feet tall and was dedicated in 1958. At the time, it was the largest cast bronze statue since the Renaissance. In his left hand, he's holding a gilded sphere radiating rays, symbolizing divinity. In his right hand, a family, representing human relationships. Behind him, the marble wall is a quote from 2 Corinthians 3:17, "Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty." This classic building is the Wayne County Building and is an architectural gem. It once served as…read morethe county's courthouse and administrative center, though those functions have since been moved elsewhere. Construction began in in 1897 and after much scandal and even a grand jury investigation, it completed in 1902. It features 18 courtrooms and 145 rooms that hosted public hearings and many county departments. It was designed by John and Arthur Scott who managed to blend Roman Baroque Revival, Beaux-Arts, and Neoclassical styles. The top of the building features a tower (totaling 247 feet tall) and four-horse chariots that represent both Victory and Progress. Other sculptures by J. Massey Rhind represent Law, Commerce, Agriculture and Mechanics. A lot has changed in Detroit since 1902 (Progress, maybe. Victory, not so much.) and after a number of renovations and updates, the building mostly sits vacant. Knowing how difficult it can be to find places in downtown Detroit, I arrived extra early and using the address and checking it against the numbers on the building and looking for a Compuware sign I was unable to positively identify the building. I circled the area where the address should have been and had to get around major construction looking for it. I then decided to focus on the parking address and...more difficulty, the street with the address was blocked and didn't go through! Then I figured out that the blocking was after the entrance to the garage so I was able to go in. After going up many floors, I finally found a spot and parked. As I approached the elevators I met a couple of ladies who were heading back to the Compuware Building so I followed them until they pointed me to the visitors desk to get directions to my meeting! I thought I was cutting it close but an earlier presentation was running long so I had to wait until they were ready. Overall impression for me was a hard to find and difficult (and expensive $4/20minutes up to $25/day) parking, beautiful lobby with waterfall. I wouldn't want to work here or come here regularly. My low rating reflects my dislike of hard to find and difficult and expensive parking.

They set up draped off areas for people with cabana reservations and opened up Hard Rock Cafe to be part of the party space. The free drinks that came with admission were good quality and all in all it was a success. The compuware building itself is a worthwhile destination if you're in the downtown area. Of course if you're in Campus Martias park, it's worth chcking out the fountain in the lobby and maybe stopping into the Texas de Brazil bar for a Caipirinha.
