As a novice of woodworking, I was blown-away by the intricate woodwork and finishings throughout the home. The three ladies that lead our tour of the home shared many interesting details about the property, its restoration, and details of Clara and Henry's years at the estate. Many of the restoration stories, like finding a tub for Henry's bathroom or how Clara had a section repainted white were intriguing. Even though much of the home, especially the second floor, is still being restored it was a fascinating experience.

There wasn't much actually open amongst the majestic-looking buildings while I was there, but the picnic area was hopping. The signage was bilingual-in English and Arabic-and what appeared to be a Yemeni wedding seemed to be taking place. The juxtaposition of the estate of an industrialist (or robber baron, or visionary, or racist, depending on your point of view) with a distinctive immigrant community makes for a striking reflection on Americana. The grounds include some gardens, and a lake with a path around it. Access to the river is limited, but it didn't look like that impressive of a river. The greenery is more worthwhile.

If you grew up in Farmington or Farmington Hills, then you've probably passed by this gorgeous…read moredowntown mansion a hundred times or maybe even taken a picture in front for prom or graduation. But what's the story behind this iconic small town landmark? Was Governor Warner a cool guy to know? What was Farmington like back in the day? These questions (and more) are no match for Sharon, who gave us an interesting and informative tour. For starters, the inside of the Warner Mansion have been preserved very well. It was built by PD Warner (who was the father of the governor) in a Victorian Italiante structure in 1867. The interior still holds the original late Victorian style and there is beautiful hand carved furniture throughout, original wall paper, a one-of-a-kind antique piano, ornate furnaces and an original Edison record player! PD Warner's photo is displayed a number of times throughout the tour but it's the same picture. From the photo, one might characterize him as congenial based on his smirk. His son, the governor, was presented as a well-liked man and 'everyone's friend'. The last inhabitant of the mansion was Edessa Warner Slocum, the daughter of Governor Warner. There is one picture of her on the refrigerator holding her grand child but not much was said about her current whereabouts. The mansion has an extensive garden and is a participant in many of Farmington's downtown parades and events. There is even a group of representatives called The Warnerettes. I enjoyed this tour very much and hope others get a chance to check it out. There is a donation box and it is asked that you give a $3 donation per adult and $1 per child. Anything extra goes to preserving the mansion and the upkeep which is very expensive. Sharon is a volunteer and so are the others who help to tend the garden and premise. It is thanks to them that these tours are possible.

What a treat to see a classic story like Beaty and the Beast acted out in this classic, historic…read moretheatre. Outside, handills and sandwich boards announce the current performance. Inside, the smell of freshly popped popcorn will greet you as you make your way into the lobby/foyer. Despite the ornate gold fixtures and red velvet curtains in the auditorium that speak to the theatre's bygone days, it's now a family-friendly place so popcorn as a snack option is a hit. Ticket prices are reasonable so the whole family can experience live theatre without breaking the bank. The matinee performances on Saturdays and Sundays are perfect for kids and birthday parties are a regular event. At the end of performances, after curtain calls, the cast announce the names of the birthday boys and girls and everyone, including the audience, sings happy birthday. Community theatre is a wonderful way to showcase local talent and it's fun to see such an active group alive and well in historic Northville.

You shouldn't text during a show. Also, the shows are based on classic fairytales and not Disney movies. I see all their shows and the kids I take are always impressed.

Uniroyal was founded 1892 as the United States Rubber Company in Connecticut as part of the merger of nine separate companies which was one of the biggest corporate consolidations at the time. They became a major supplier for General Motors as an OEM manufacturer. In 1985, Uniroyal merged its tire operations with B.F. Goodrich, forming the Uniroyal Goodrich Tire Company and they were later acquired by Michelin in 1990, ending its run as an independent company. And I can't remember ever having a Uniroyal on my many vehicles. The Uniroyal Giant Tire was built for the 1964 New York World's Fair as a Ferris wheel styled structure. Unfortunately her flight cancellation, prevented her arrival. The Henry Ford Museum was gracious to pivot and offer everyone FREE admission to the museum for our inconvenience. I thank my Yelp Bestie for an annual membership pass that she won for two people. I am truly grateful. This was a prime time to turn lemons into lemonade! We decided to check out the DaVinci special exhibition, shop the Museum Store and have lunch at the Plum Market Kitchen, too. The DaVinci exhibit was amazing. I had no idea of how many inventions Leonardo DaVinci made. I was only familiar with the Mona Lisa painting and the Safety Bridge. The Room of Mirrors was pretty cool. She was able to tell me much more than I even came in looking for! Donna at the front desk is also fantastic. She is helpful, understanding and a pleasure to talk to! I also should mention, over the years I've picked up a few candles from there and I've really enjoyed burning them as well. My favorite was the personalized one I got a few years ago after I had a card reading. I'll definitely be back to this gem soon!
