He is one of the approved dive medicine doctors overseeing the professional and volunteer divers of the world famous Monterey Bay Aquarium. Does not listen or trust patient intuition. I asked for antibiotics for sinus headache, he blatantly replied 'No' and wrote several unnecessary referrals. I ended up in CHOMP ER who continued to ignore my simple request for antibiotics, charged hundreds of dollars for unnecessary treatment. Finally achieved antibiotics and relief through webmd. Clearly wish Dr Franklin would have listened and respected my self knowledge. My personal health and budget were negatively affected. read more

Dr. Franklin's office staff are pleasant. I only had a few office visits and found Dr. Franklin to always seemingly be rushed and very curt. He chastised me for canceling and rescheduling an appointment even though it was well within the 24 hour window to do so. He treated me as though he was doing me favor and he had better things to be doing with his time. Dr. Franklin has been in practice for a while and one must wonder why he is continually accepting new patients....I have found a new PCP and am now treated with respect. read more

He changed a lot. Became one of those maximum 5 minutes appointment per patient doctor. I told him that I was working with my alternative doctor as well and that I preferred this way. Next time i saw him he was very rude because i did not get "his" blood work done but sent him my alternative medicine, a very detailed one. He said: what is it?! I don't understand/know this. I have been taking the same prostate medication for several years. My PCP retired, and I went to Dr Franklin. Now I find that he won't refill my prescription unless I make an appointment. I feel like I'm being extorted to pay for an appointment just to be told to continue taking the same medication. He had no interest in receiving my medical records. I found his assistant Jennifer to be very mean and condescending. Seeking an attorney, very inhumane to hold up my medication. Avoid this doctor, find one who cares about you more than getting another $100 out of you. read more

Dr. Franklin and his team are extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and my two visits there so far have been very timely, kind, and as enjoyable as going to the doctor can be. Dr. Franklin is always friendly, encouraging and compassionate, his nurse is also friendly and his office manager is a total gem! She has helped me book all my blood work, get referrals placed and even rebooked referrals when I asked to see another specialist. I recently went in to see Dr. Franklin for a physical and ran out hysterically crying. I am 9 months postpartum and have had a hard time losing the baby weight after my 3rd child in 5 years. Dr. Franklin walked into his office and said "what the SH*T is going on with your weight." He apologized for cursing, but holy smokes was I floored. If he took a second to look at my bloodwork first, he would have seen my numbers were perfect and all in the healthy range. But instead, he focused on a number on the scale and shamed me for it. My first visit to Dr Franklin was last November as a new patient. I had been taking three medications for many years, and Dr Franklin would not refill one of the medications because he said there might be a cardiac side affect. The previous doctor who prescribed the medication to me was aware of this, and thought the benefit was worth the risk. He told me I would not be taking that medication as long as I was his patient because he did not want his license in jeopardy if something happened. I requested a referral to a specialist who could monitor this medication and was told "you make the appointment and I will give you the referral". Well, no one in this speciality would make an appointment without a referral. In the mean time, I had a total cardiac workup, EKG, stress test and echo cardiogram. All perfect, I passed with flying colors. I returned to Dr Franklin's office. Again he would not renew the medicine or give me a referral. This was my third visit to his office in a month. Approximately two weeks later, I was having symptoms of being off this medication, which, if untreated, could be life threatening. Again I called Dr Franklin's office requesting the prescription refill. Again he refused. I told him that if I did not get this medicine I would need to go to the emergency room. He told me to go to the emergency room, which I did. The emergency room prescribed the needed medicine and made the referral that I needed for ongoing medication monitoring. A few days later I was fine. This visit to the emergency room was TOTALLY avoidable if Dr Franklin had been a responsible and concerned physician, He was arrogant and took me off medicine he knew nothing about and made no provision for me to see someone who DID know about it. He told me I would not take that medicine as long as I was his patient. Well, I have seen another doctor now, and I am on the medicine, and I am not his patient any more. read more

I have been to 3 appointments and never actually met Dr. Franklin only met with his PA Jennifer. She was knowledgeable but dismissive and quick to write referrals rather than address my issues. I have moved to another primary care who seemed to look at me as a whole person. Primary Care physicians are hard to find but worth the search. read more

I had a stroke in early June 2021, and made an appointment in December 2022 so I could continue to receive the medication prescribed in the hospital. For some unknown reason, I was scheduled by his front desk staff to see his Physician Assistant without me being told of such. After talking to me for less than 5 minutes, she determined I could not be seen in the office and had to see an internist instead. Refusing to care for a new patient? Were you more interested in your Christmas plans?? Really??? When I asked, she wouldn't even prescribe some blood pressure medication to tide me over until I could see another M.D. Very uncaring needless to say. How come if she was correct, I found another MD that I first saw in January 2023, who was also a general practitioner and who has prescribed everything I was formerly prescribed, provided a pneumonia vaccine since I am now almost 66 years of age, and recently put me on additional medication to lower my A1C level? If you believe this is a coincidence, then I also scheduled to see Dr. Franklin in 2010, but instead to my surprise ended up being seen also by his PA at the time. This person answered a personal call that lasted over 5 minutes since he answered a cell phone call during my appointment. Next I saw Dr. Franklin himself, who gave me some paperwork to get blood drawn without even discussing what it is for. Needless to say I declined scheduling the blood testing since the testing on the paperwork had nothing to do with the symptoms I was seeing him for per some personal online research. Totally an unprofessional place that I wouldn't recommend being seen by my worst enemy. Avoid! read more

Been coming here for four years now and I absolutely adore this place. Nikki is LITERALLY the best. She is beyond easy to talk to, very attentive, calls back but also will have your back if you need help with ANYTHING. Dr. Franklin is just as awesome and easy to talk to. My poor mother came home CRYING from this absolutely horrible experience. I'm shocked and disgusted. I never write doctor reviews, but this is NOT OK. I would urge you to not go here. Please read until the end. My mom recently started seeing one of the PA-Cs (Jennifer) and had such a horrible experience. My mom lost her father a few weeks ago, so Jennifer upped her anti-depression medication dose. My mom went back to ask to check her knee (it has been in pain and making weird noises) and for a mammogram. My mom wasn't even able to ask about those things, because as soon as she told Jennifer that she wanted to go back her previous dose of medication because of depression, Jennifer was being very rude and insensitive. She made sarcastic remarks about anti-depressants not possibly being a cause for depression and told my mom to up the dose even more. Everyone, including my mom, had realized that she was much more depressed after the dose was upped. Jennifer asked my mom what her symptoms are, so my mom said depression and before she could continue, Jennifer scoffed and said "that's not a symptom." My mom then understood and said that she was feeling very fatigued, gaining weight, etc. So Jennifer scoffed again and asked, "Are you depressed because you're gaining weight?!" And my mom said "No, I'm depressed so I am gaining weight, which is a symptom." Then she interrupted her by saying "I don't care about you gaining weight." I can't believe that actually happened. Mind you, my mom also has high blood pressure, so she has to do exercise and eat balanced meals, which has been so hard from the depression. She also told my mom that it was probably because her father died. This isn't about the dosage or any of that. It's about how Jennifer handled the situation very poorly. I cannot believe how horribly she was treating my mom. Her whole tone was so insensitive, rude, and outright unacceptable. How much more unprofessional can you get? My mother came home crying and telling me how she didn't even get to talk about her knee or the mammogram because she was so shocked at how she was being treated. She was not properly listened to. She will definitely be switching primary care physicians. read more

Update: Dr. Franklin's staff contacted me with my now over 4-year-old medical bill, demanding payment. I informed them that the statute of limitations in California is four years for medical bills. The bill receptionist said over the phone that I am still liable, and they would be sending the bill to collections. They never sent the bill to collections. Healthcare providers in the state of California legally cannot collect medical debt that is over four years old, no matter how much one's receptionist may lie. read more

Through a heart attach, knee issues, foot issues etc. I feel comfortable taking to him about anything that ails me. His staff is very friendly always greet you with a smile. So I really used to like Dr. Franklin. He was on time and very helpful and it felt like he was "there" for me whenever I needed him. I thought thats what a family doctor was supposed to do. However, one morning about 3 weeks ago, I woke up and I literally COULD NOT HEAR out of my right ear. Slightly shocking and worrisome. I went to the gym because my hearing came back, but shortly after getting there, I couldn't hear again. Logically, I called my DOCTOR to tell them I needed to come in and have Dr. Franklin find out what the hell was going on. "We only have an opening at 3:45" stated the receptionist. "I don't think you understand. I cannot hear. It's 8:30 am. I don't know about you, but this feels like a pretty pressing matter...considering I literally woke up and lost hearing in my right ear." I replied. "Yeah. We can't see you until 3:45. Would you like that appointment?" Click (and a certain curse word under my breath). I just thought if a patient called with something that odd and disturbing, maybe the doc could squeeze that patient in to try and figure things out. These guys are friggin on top of stuff. Nikki at the front desk smashes it when it comes to multi-tasking and getting back to people and being friendly. Everybody is super quick and synergetic. I've never had to wait more than five minutes in the waiting room or in the exam room. They don't hassle you with paperwork every time you come in. And they use a free patient data system. Which shows forward thinking and it shifts extra cost away from the customer. Every other place I've been to is just terrible. Rude fat ass staff with neck tattoos, mountains of paper work, old ass doctors that want to talk your ear off about this or that... Not here! read more

I have never had such a negative experience with a doctor in my life, and I tried going to him several times. My insurance was a pain to change and I spent a year fighting an ongoing UTI, so I visited him probably 6 times at least. There were moments at first when I thought he was just a little quirky, but over time I realized he is just a real asshole. He is very patronizing and condescending, and I left his office really frustrated and upset every time. His assistants are all nice though. I know I'm not alone in this frustration because I heard another woman get so upset in the room over she started yelling and stormed out. Then I heard Dr. Franklin and his receptionist Nikki making fun of the woman and Nikki saying she won't answer when she calls. I could not believe how unprofessional the whole thing was. One time I had dark moles on my back removed and he made comments when I had my shirt off to not worry and that I was "cute"... I don't know if he meant cute in general or cute to worry but whatever it was.. It was not appropriate and made me feel super weird. Then he removed the moles very painfully. I've had another doctor do it much better with almost no pain, but this guy didn't give the local anesthesia enough time and he was also just very crude and harsh with the knife. I know because I watched and he seemed extremely careless and in a rush. He is brash, impatient and can honestly be mean. I'm assuming anyone who had said he's good has had him as a family doctor their whole life or something. He's definitely been around for a long time and maybe long ago he did care about people. It is very clear at this point that he does not care. Maybe he is tired and worn out from his career (it seems that way) so if you're reading this Dr. Franklin: PLEASE RETIRE. Dr. Franklin has had an immeasurable impact on my family and me, providing care for regular check-ups and potentially life-threatening ailments (and everything in between). He is smart, punctual and a consummate professional who treats the whole patient, not just a condition or a complaint. But that probably doesn't adequately describe his care. I'm one of those girls who only goes to a girls doc. I haven't been to a primary care physician in over 10 years. But I finally had to get a normal physical and some paperwork done so I headed over to Dr. Franklin's. So, I have actually never seen or met Dr. Franklin. I've been to his office half a dozen times and have only seen his PA, Larry Rose. But I couldn't be happier... They take Tricare, they always schedule me immediately and they always listen to my issues. Larry is actually proactive about my health - he's referred me for several screenings and to a physical therapist to just check on something that I have ignored for years. I actually feel like, for the first time in a decade, I have a family doctor. Now, the other thing I have to comment on is the office staff. Nikki is super friendly and incredibly helpful. I hate going to doctor offices and dealing with grouchy temperamental staff. Not here. And they have a patient advocate, Aslin (sp?). She is terrific! At first, I thought - great. Another level of admin. I don't have time for this... but not only has she maneuvered through Tricare for me, she knows which doctors in the area takes Tricare AND helps schedule my initial appointment with them! I definitely recommend this office if you're new in town and looking to find a new primary physician. read more

I decided that I needed a family practice physician, instead of always going to Doctor's on Duty and never getting the answers I needed while paying a crap load of money. So, thanks to Yelp reviews, I decided to try Dr. Franklin. Dr. Franklin and his staff have been accommodating and polite at all times. He is extremely informative and isn't rude, nor judgemental (ahem Dr. Brown at Doctors on Duty on Lighthouse). Anyway, when it comes to cost, he isn't very expensive. I used to have Anthem Blue Cross (but now I have much better health insurance) and I'm always billed correctly. They ask for my co-pay upfront and I ask for a receipt. It's really that simple. The only con: it's actually kind of hard to become his patient. When I made my initial appointment with him last year, the front desk told me it would be a month to see him for the preliminary appointment. read more

My husband and I really trusted Dr. Franklin. When my brain trauma journey began, I was at CHOMP, but he never came, I saw him some 3-4 months after my rehab and when I really NEEDED his help with 2 days of medication (opioids which he prescribed) he lied to me saying he never agreed to do that. When my wife and I moved to Monterey years ago, we were hoping to find a good family doctor. Just through blind luck, we found Dr. Peter Franklin and we could not have been happier with the service we have received from him and his wonderful staff. Dr. Franklin is one of a dying breed of doctors who get to know you and treat you as a friend not just a patient. Dr. Franklin ALWAYS is courteous, and considerate to us and we trust his medical judgement. We have always been able to get in on short notice on emergencies. His office is easy to get to in the center of Monterey and his staff are magnificent. Nikki at the front desk, handles the phone, signing in, appointments, follow-ups and many other duties with good humor and aplomb. Lynn with her bubbly cheerful personality makes referrals easy and quick. Lupe, the office nurse, is cheerful and always smiling even when she is drawing a blood sample or doing some other necessary but unpleasant task. We have never had a problem with billing. We suspect that they deal with all the problems with insurance without bothering us with the details. The only problem is that Dr. Franklin has a very busy and large practice. You might have to go on a waiting list for your first visit. All in all, this doctor and his staff make you feel welcome, treat you well and give you very best medical care that they can provide. read more

Last year I had horrible neck pain. I went through my favorite chiropractor, massage, and a wretched Dr. in San Luis who told me it was carpal tunnel. By then, 6 1/2 months had passed and the numbness going down my arm was constant .I was nowhere to finding an answer and felt helpless to find relief. Finally, I had the opportunity to find a new doctor in Monterey. Nikki the receptionist was wonderful, and made every effort to get me in within a day. Dr. Franklin listened, really Listened to me, touched my neck and had me tilt and bend to show range of motion. He immediately set me up for a referral for an MRI, and followed up with a physical therapist. His wife handles referrals and was very compassionate and helpful in keeping me in the loop to make sure my insurance would cover every referral. Theresa is also a very competent Doctor there, who I have seen as well. This is a great practice that gives back the dignity to their patients and brings back the good name to compassionate and competent Physicians. read more

Love Nikki at the front desk (she's the coolest!!!) and the other nurses. Not a huge fan of Peter though. He seems very friendly, but once he starts talking to you, he has this brash, patronizing way that he talks to you. Almost like he's talking to you as if you were one of his bros, where anything goes, and not with a gentle bedside manner you'd hope to have from a doctor. I imagine guys would really enjoy visits with him and think he's cool, but he gives me anxiety and makes me uncomfortable sharing things with him. Anyone else get this vibe? Great Doctor! I've been with Dr. Franklin for years and found both him and his office to be very easy to work with. Nikki in scheduling is absolutely outstanding and has done a great job getting me scheduled for appointments and with getting me set up with specialists including approvals from my insurance. I've been able to maintain my annual physical through teleconference with lab-work done through CHOMP with minimal inconvenience even through our current COVID pandemic. I get a quick call back if I don't get through on my first phone call if I need scheduling or answer to a question. read more
