On this issue of his offering a $1500 concierge service, consider it money well spent to not only have a Dr. "on-call" but act as an advocate too. He TRULY cares about his patients. I came to him for hormone replacement therapy. He is a prudent doctor. Before he gave me the hormones, he had me do an extensive blood panel and do all screening procedures to ensure that I do not have ANY signs of cancer. and that my body is eligible for hormone replacement. In hormone replacement, it is all about OPTIMAL levels. Many of my levels were in the "normal" range but "normal" can be VERY broad and not display underlining issues that can profoundly affect a patient. My husband recommended Dr. Franklin to me years ago and I've seen him off and on for over a decade. He would be my primary doctor if his practice wasn't so far away from my home. On occasion, I do still drive between 4 and 5 hours to visit his office though. There are lots of reasons why: 1. He's the only MD I know that uses both traditional western medicine and holistic medicine in his practice. He's always up to date on the latest treatments. I don't have to search the internet and show up at his office with articles from medical journals. I know he's read them. 2. He's the most compassionate doctor I've ever met. He really listens & cares. I've gone in with lists of questions and he will patiently answer every one. I never feel rushed when I visit his office. He takes all the time necessary to help. Somehow he still manages to stay on schedule. 3. He is a brilliant diagnostician. I've had complex health issues over the years and he's always been able to get to the root of the problem. He cares about the whole person, too; it's about more than just the symptoms you're experiencing on a particular visit. 4. He'll work with you to create a plan not just to help you get over a current illness, but also to keep you well. He's a partner in your healthcare. He doesn't just tell you what to do. He actually talks to you about your options and discusses the pros and cons of each. 5. He makes himself available. When I woke up with the flu one Christmas morning, all it took was a phone call to get the help I needed. I can't say enough good things about Dr. Franklin. When I met him, I was in severe chronic pain due to a car accident & had been diagnosed with several autoimmune conditions. I was on more than a dozen prescription drugs, including strong pain medications, and spent most of my time in bed. Now, all of my blood tests are normal and I'm in better health than I was 15 years ago. I only take two prescription drugs now and neither of them daily. I still have limitations and setbacks, but I'm active and healthy again. Now I manage my pain with exercise, healthy eating, physical therapy, massage, meditation and visits to the chiropractor. Smarmy and handsy and overly friendly (adjectives I just read in another review) are exactly the right words. On top of that was extremely pushy with his concierge VIP subscription (with a promise for the patient to be seen within 15 min of the appointment time!), otherwise sometimes made you wait for 2+ hours, to push his concierge MD service, no doubt. Greedy and untrustworthy. P.S. Dr. Franklin posted a response to my review in which he said he's been trying to call me and I shouldn't be trying to resolve my health matters in a public forum. Even remotely, he has no clue of personal boundaries. This is a tough review to write. I hope it will be received in the nature it is intended (constructive criticism) and not baseless bashing. I did like the PA who I saw at this practice. I felt they were good about recommending appropriate testing when I had specific concerns. What I felt was lacking was preventative care. I've been going to this practice since about 2015, and only once did I feel that I received a somewhat thorough examination. Every other time it was simply a few tests to check on specific concerns. Maybe my heart would be listened to, but that's about as far as an actual physical exam would go. I can't recall what I would consider a thorough annual exam in years. To me that includes listening to the heart and lungs, palpitating the lymph nodes, looking in ears and throat...you know, the stuff that we all expect to happen at a preventative wellness exam. Once I was told that I needed to go in for my annual visit to get a prescription renewed. No big deal, that's to be expected. But what surprised me was that I was not actually examined at that visit. I was simply asked "any changes to your health?" To which I replied "not that I'm aware of." And that answer seemed good enough. The prescription was written and I was sent on my way. No real exam given. Isn't the point of preventative medicine to catch changes that the patient may be unaware of? Asking me if I'm aware of changes isn't enough. Another time I asked the medical assistant if I was due for a woman's wellness exam. She said I had one at the end of 2015, that type of exam is due every 3 years and that I wasn't due yet. Well it was the end of 2018 when I asked that question....3 years since my last, so yes I was due. I also found out recently that it is recommended that women have a pelvic exam annually. Why wasn't I told that when I asked the assistant? Why were they seeing me to renew a prescription but not recommending a pelvic exam? Again, I like the staff and the PA. Every one was friendly and put me at ease. But I don't feel that the care was as complete as it should have been, especially when it came to routine preventative wellness, which should have just been a given. read more

Every time I head up to Monterey I go here for IV therapy. Not only is it reasonably priced, but the IV's themselves are of great quality (No GMOs)! The service is always superb, with my regular nurse Caroline taking extra time to keep me company as to distract me from the process (I'm a bit squeamish when it comes to needles). The chairs are super comfortable and Dr. Franklin also pops in occasionally to say hello and check up on me. It's always been a wonderful experience, and having a consistently great IV therapy option has made me feel much better in the long-term. Dr Franklin is as good as it gets. I realized I was missing medication for international travel on the day I was supposed to depart. They got me in for an appointment within 2 hours of my call. Any time I've called for an emergency appointment, I've always been seen the same day. As I just learned, the office keeps 5 appointments open every day for last minute/emergency appointments. Dr. Franklin has been my primary care doctor for nearly 20 years when he started on Cass St., moved to his larger practice in Ryan Ranch and now back on Cass St. with a much smaller office with himself and a physician assistant. The only reason my rating is not 5 star is the Ryan Ranch stint was simply too chaotic, seeing too many patients, etc., but that issue is long gone. The current office setting is more personalized and the office staff is very helpful. If you really need to get in on short notice, they typically can find a way to make it happen. Over 20 years, I've had my issues with knee surgeries, the flu, bumps and bruises that require x-rays or MRIs and Dr. Franklin has been a steady force in guiding me along the way to the best solution. As you might expect after all this time, he understands my background issues and can rapidly diagnose any new items with suggestions and actions. I've read other comments and welcome any Dr. to wear jeans or eat lunch or snack while I visit, I could care less, its all about correctly figuring out what is the best course of action. He accesses the current illness or pain, and provides options, starting with the least invasive that has the best chance to remedy the issue and then works with you if that does not readily solve the problem. Each person is different, thus it might take some iterations. Since Dr. Franklin has been in the area for more than 20 years, he uniquely knows dozens of specialists whom he can recommend for specific treatments or assessments. This knowledge is vital in moving to the next step in resolving whatever medical issue you might be experiencing. I personally appreciate his approach of not using a sledgehammer to immediately tackle an issue, if another more gentle solution could work just as well. Why expose your body to overkill when it may not be required? He genuinely cares about my well being and answers all my questions. read more

Took my kids too, they did a full check, listened and supported. Did not try to prescribe anything we don't need and totally gave us the best service we have had in decades. Buyer beware. If you are hoping to have Dr. Franklin as your Primary Care doc it will cost you $1500 on top of your Co pay if you have insurance. No idea what his fees are without. If you don't want to pay that ridiculous amount for that then you can just see the PA for the regular Co-pay. They are very nice but I question the depth of their knowledge. The solution to my concerns was a diet plan printed off the internet. I was expecting some blood tests, a follow up appointment recommendation but no just the print out and a let us know if you need anything. I needed a medical evaluation so a definite miss here. No wonder it was so easy to get an appointment. I think I'll just stay with my other doctor. read more

I went to then "Dr. Tel Franklin" years ago in his beautiful Ryan Ranch office. I really appreciated his open-mindedness to first consider and promote non-Western medicine approaches like diet, activity, supplements, meditation, etc. first before the typical knee-jerk reaction of Rx writing. I was thrilled with this and continued to see him but fairly rapidly (maybe a couple appts max) I was passed off to the newest practitioner in the office because he was too busy. Then after seeing her for a 3-4 appts it happens again. It was ridiculous. It seemed I was just a number, clearly one of too many and it was clear business was booming but to the patients detriment. How do you develop and maintain a relationship with your patients if they are given a new Dr. at nearly each appt? This was very disappointing. I moved on to a different Dr. Franklin, Peter, whom I loved and referred many people to over the years. His office was a bit worn but although bustling you could always get in if urgent and if not the wait was reasonable. He was a small town-like Dr. who had pictures of his dogs everywhere, remembered your personal details (with a little correcting) and medical past. Dr. Peter Franklin would take the time to make chit chat, overly (but impressively so) explain every single line item of your blood panels. What each meant, where you ranked, what that ranking meant, what you needed to do to change it (if necessary), etc. Unfortunately, after going to him for over 10 years he succumbed to the "Concierge" trend. Sigh. Moving on reluctantly. I moved to the peninsula over 20 years ago from L.A. and learned in my first day here that I was no longer anonymous. What you do, how you act and what you say is not private and it will come back to bite you in the ass. I think this lesson was either not learned by Dr. Terry Franklin or disregarded entirely. Shortly after going to Dr. Peter Franklin I saw that Tel moved from the Ryan Ranch practice, got married (see - small town) and he didn't seem to be anywhere around. Perhaps he moved out of the area. Fast-forward to a couple years ago, I am at an appt in 1011 Cass and I see that Dr. Tel Franklin was back (post divorce - again, small town) and moved down the hall from where my appt was but is now going by Dr. Terry Franklin. O.K. nice. Looks like a small but impressively clean and elegant office, hopefully just himself and no fledgling doctors to pass patients off on. I haven't gone back to him so I cannot speak to how he now practices if that has deviated at all nor can I speak to the caliber of his staff. I hope he has continued with suggesting diet, and alternative options rather than Big Pharma. What I wanted to convey was a point more about my recent experience of his presumed character. While visiting one of my subsequent appts in the same building as Dr. Terry Franklin's new practice I left my appt to go back to work only to discover that Dr. Terry Franklin's car was intentionally parked behind me blocking my car in as if to make a point. I cannot attest it was the Dr. himself or one of his staff who did so but it was clearly his car. This act was petty, juvenile, unprofessional (considering he has a practice and a personalized car) and borderline hostile. At that time the parking was not assigned by name, or signs so there was no way to know if they were assigned at all. I believe the spots had numbers but no obvious indication as to what number went with which office, if at all. Anyway, I had to go to his office and ask the front desk person to move his car. She quickly responded jumping up and saying "I'll grab his keys". The fact that her response was not one of disbelief and didn't ask any questions led me to think that perhaps this is not the first occurrence. Whereas, I would have possibly considered him as a physician again, I won't now. I understand being in a hurry. I understand frustration when someone parks in your spot (if that was what I did), possibly this is something occurring on an ongoing basis, I also understand that level of elevated angst but if you have a professional practice and your car is clearly personalized to identify you, yet you choose to maliciously block someone in, there's clearly a "I don't give a shit" and "My time is more important that yours" attitude in that tactless, unprofessional behavior. I often read reviews before putting my own, it's my own thing I like to do. Can I just say, I am shocked. It's like we have been to two different offices. I managed medical offices for 15 years, so I come at this with a experiential working knowledge, and high expectation I might add, of what to expect from a provider, their service, clinical care, and overall support from a medical team. Dr. Franklin, Janessa, PA-C and their team have met and exceeded my high expectations from a medical office. I've been seeing them for about a year following two catastrophic medical events....an artery blockage and a mini stroke. Every time I have been in, be it for the biggest part of that storm, to a med refill, to a broken toe, I felt the clinical treatment was sound, thought out, and followed through on. I felt my overall health was a factor, not just the pinpoint of what I was enduring at the moment. I appreciate their service, and highly recommend this office. I hope my experience was a fluke or something and that people are genuinely getting good care like the ratings suggest.Years back I went to him with what ended up being a diagnosis of Eczema. His first comment to my rash "wow, this looks like something I've only seen in aids patients" ... Took a swab test. What was his diagnosis? A staph infection. Went through a useless course of Cipro. Have you taken this antibiotic before? I had a horrible reaction, damaged my gut flora (years later now my digestion is still messed up from it) that stuff is no joke. Go back to the office for a follow-up totally expecting that this is the day my freaked out 21 year old self was going to be told I was an aids patient--greeted me with "remind me, what are you here for"? (Didn't bother to read my chart). The course of antibiotics obviously didn't work, was told to my extreme relief that I don't have aids, I think he referred me to a dermatologist. Also, it should be known that while I was waiting in the waiting room for this last appointment a child--girl about 8, is walking out and I over hear her talking with her mom... she too was diagnosed with Staph. It's probably not a completely uncommon illness, but that's a pretty big coincidence if you ask me. When I tell the dermatologist what had happened he looked pretty dumbfounded. Is there any skin diagnosis more basic then eczema? I was 21, I am 36 now. This is basically my go to doctor horror story that I share and often when I share this many people have actually gone to this guy. Half have horror stories of their own, the other half think he is great ‍ I do have to say that his transition in different "side specialties" he offers in his office kind of weirds me out. Back in the day when I had gone to him I think he was advertising everywhere that he also specialized in doing some kind of Botox treatment? I feel like maybe he should learn to identify eczema first and see how that goes? Now I see him advertising acupuncture, naturopathic, and holistic... as additional specializations all interestingly enough treatments that really would cause him no backlash if they weren't done properly or didn't work... The hardest part about writing this review is that he seemed like a really nice guy. I'm certain he is. But people who go to doctors are in such a vulnerable position, especially when they don't know what they have. Had I gone to the dermatologist immediately, that would have been the price of one doctor visit and some extra special prescription cortisone cream. Instead it ended up being multiple visits, useless antibiotics that ended up hurting me, blood tests, psychological stress over thinking I had aids, and I still ended up needing to make the dermatologist appointment and pay for that damn cortisone cream. Does he have any clue what kind of a financial hardship going to he doctor is for many 21 year olds? Does he truly not know Eczema when he sees it? Or are all of these "extra services" supporting evidence that I was 21, dumb, and he saw that and got as much money out of the situation as he possibly could. Suppose I'll never know. I do hope people are receiving good care and that my experience was a weird blip. read more

After seeing Dr Franklin, I feel hopeful. No more medical doors closed on me with no alternatives. I was falling through the cracks

I was referred to Dr. Franklin by a friend of mine. I moved to the area recently and needed to get some things checked out. I called the office and the lady at the front desk was able to quickly set up an appointment for me for four days after I called. Great! Unfortunately, the morning of my appointment I got a call from the office saying my appointment had to be canceled and when would I like to reschedule. I was irritated but rescheduled anyways for two days later as I needed to be seen ASAP. Boy, am I glad I went through with the appointment! The woman at the front desk was very nice when I arrived and quickly got my paperwork settled in. After completing the paperwork and getting my insurance worked out, I waited less than 5 minutes before they called me back. The nurse that did the initial examination was fantastic! Very sweet and attentive. She made me feel like my concerns were legitimate, unlike many other places I've been to that don't believe young women when they say they're having a problem. She took my blood pressure, weighed me, and asked me a few questions about my general health, then told me the doctor would see me in a moment. Indeed he did! Just a few moments later I was invited into another room where Dr. Franklin introduced himself and his assistant. He started off by asking me why I was here and a little bit about my medical history. He listened to what I had to say, made accurate diagnoses, and got me started on ADHD medication I'd been trying (and failing!) to get on for years! I came in with three different issues (Emotional Support Animal recommendation, ADHD medication, and some odd stomach sensitivity issue) so it was great that he was able to resolve all three in one appointment. He wrote up a recommendation to get blood work done and set up another appointment to see me in a month. At the end of the appointment, the lady at the front desk printed out my lab work recommendation and told me exactly the best place to go to get it done, and also helped me check out. I only had to pay $20 out-of-pocket, which is my insurance copay. I was there less than an hour total-what an amazing experience. The only complaint I could possibly have is that the office is a little bit hard to find, as it is down a little pathway and around the corner. I look forward to more great care from Dr. Franklin and his team! Side note: What are all these bad reviews with criticisms such as being "overly friendly"? Don't you want your doctor to be friendly? 1 star is way too generous! I have not been to a doctor in a while, and have quite a few things to check off my list. I was hoping for and scheduled a wellness exam. Front desk staff was dismissive, at best. Dr. Franklin did not introduce himself to me. His assistant, name unknown also due to no introduction, did not care to tell me my blood pressure. I was not asked what medications I am taking, my medical or surgical or family history. Instead of asking me why I was there and letting me be part of my healthcare, I was grilled about my risk factors for heart disease, my weight and basically told that I needed to join their weight loss program because I clearly don't know what I am doing. It should be known that I just lost 40 pounds on my own, yet instead of credit or recognition for this, it was implied that I lost lean muscle. That's incorrect, as I have been doing HIIT training and lifting weights intensely. I am stronger now than 40 pounds ago, that is for sure, not to mention the benefit of 40 pounds lost and exercise to my CARDIOVASCULAR endurance and health! I was not given the opportunity to ask questions, of which I had many. Appointment started at 1, and I was walking to my car at 1:14. He put his stethoscope to my heart for about 7 seconds. That was our only contact. I was so upset upon leaving I wanted to cry or scream, but was in a stunned state of shock. I want my time and my money back. Horrible visit. This is how western medicine gets a bad reputation. I will NEVER GO BACK. Back to the drawing board to try to find a physician who actually cares to listen and has some bedside manner. read more
