In San Diego county we have an embarrassment of orthopedic riches. Many top notch surgeons and top notch facilities to choose from. I met with three and chose Hanson. Dr. Hanson stands out in that environment. Many great surgeons are prima donnas. Not Dr. Hanson. He's very personable. I had both hips replaced as well as my left knee, over an 8 month period. All three went exceptionally well. According to two different physical therapists, these three joint replacement were each at the very high end of surgical quality and outstanding recovery. Having coped with a damaged knee for 25 years, I always knew the day would come to have it replaced, so that I could not just continue, but up my game, as a roadie cyclist. I'm going to write a short book here, because it seems to be the only way to communicate how much I appreciate Dr. Hanson, and why. Over the years, I had met with nearly a dozen orthopaedists, gotten relief from various injections, looked at all manner of edge-therapies, had three conservative surgeries on the knee, lived with the outcomes, and eventually was advised to go ahead and get the replacement. Along the way, I observed the bedside manner of all of these doctors, noting that joint-replacement specialists, like many specialists, are, perhaps because of their training and lofty intellect, not as interested in patient communication as are most GP's. Some of them, I think, interact best with patients who are... unconscious. After doing a good deal of asking around, I was lucky to be referred to Dr. Peter Hanson at Grossmont Orthopaedic. His credentials were unbeatable, and his ratings on Yelp and elsewhere were remarkable. So, I timed my appointment with him to also satisfy my desire for a second opinion. My experience with Dr. Hanson at that appointment was so excellent that, although he truly intended only to offer a second opinion, I was nearly ready to ask him to perform the procedure himself. For a leading medical specialist, Dr. Hanson is astonishingly low-key and patient. Very approachable yes, but it's more than that. He's more like my trusted old friend taking care of me. Anyway, after yet another rushed, slightly contentious session with my other (busy, up-and-coming rockstar) specialist, I had had enough and scheduled my surgery instead with Dr. Hanson in January. On surgery day, he was a comfort both before and after the procedure. Now in my 6th week of recovery, I am delighted that I chose Dr. Hanson to perform my surgery. Although the recovery requires substantial effort, physical therapy, and some pain tolerance, my knee gets better each day. In closing, if you are lucky enough to get Peter Hanson as your joint replacement surgeon, you are in exceptionally fine hands. I cannot recommend him to you highly enough. read more

Significant office problems for this physician. Poor quality of care and communication abysmal. Seems like a "mill". Shuffled off to a physician assistant with several years of training and one who makes errors, rather than the doctor. Unprofessional conduct. They do not want questions nor will they consider individual needs. Would not recommend to anyone. Something is terribly wrong here. read more

I'll start out by saying that Dr. Hanson is an angel sent from Heaven! He did my hip replacement right after Thanksgiving 2018. I now have no pain, I have full range of motion, & I'm deliriously happy! He will do my other hip soon. Then Watch out World, I'm Back! In addition to his excellent surgical skills, I appreciate his friendly, open style & he makes me feel like he personally cares. This may sound odd but I had gone to a different orthopedic surgeon before & felt like I was on a conveyor belt as part of a long boring line of old people with messed-up joints. This review is for orthopedic surgeon Dr. Peter Hanson and his support staff at Grossmont Orthopaedic Medical Group in La Mesa. I have had hip issues for many years, with degeneration in both hips although my right hip was the worst. I had put off having the inevitable total hip replacement for a decade or more, trying conservative treatment, and even looking into alternative treatments such as stem cell therapy. After the third doctor or physical therapist I trusted suggested I see Dr. Hanson, I finally booked the appointment. I am so glad that I did! Dr. Hanson is friendly, competent and experienced. From our first visit it was clear that a total hip replacement was what I needed. I did my research beforehand, and found that the kind of surgery Dr. Hanson uses for total hip replacement - the Direct Anterior Approach (DAA) - has less complications and quicker recovery with fewer limitations than the other common surgical methods (posterior, and lateral). Dr. Hanson; his support staff at Grossmont Orthopaedic Medical Group; and the staff and surgical team at Sharp Grossmont hospital were amazing! The standard protocol during my first hip surgery in November 2019 was to have post-surgery patients transferred from the surgical center to the adjacent hospital overnight in the unlikely event of complications. I was discharged the day after surgery to recover at home. About 9 weeks after my right hip surgery, my physical therapy progress was being limited by my left (un-operated) hip. With my right hip now good again, it was clear my left hip would need surgery next. I scheduled an April 2020 date for surgery for my left hip. Unfortunately, prior to my surgery, COVID-19 appeared on the scene, and all "elective" surgeries were canceled. (Yes, this was considered "elective.") Even though I had since moved to Washington state I was so pleased with the results from my first hip replacement with Dr. Hanson that I chose to return to San Diego for six weeks to have my left hip done with the same team as before. I was able to re-schedule my left hip replacement with Dr. Hanson for end of August 2020. Since I had already been through one such surgery, I knew what to expect, although there were new COVID-related procedures, screenings and precautions. The biggest change was that instead of transferring me to the hospital post-surgery, they kept me longer in the recovery area, and sent me home late that evening! Yes, outpatient hip replacement surgery! My recovery for my left hip surgery was more rapid than my first surgery, and I was able to return to my home in Washington 4-weeks after surgery. I am ecstatic to realize I can not only walk up and down stairs without pain but that my effort is so "normal" that I do not even have to think about it! I have no pain, or limitations and I take no medications or even OTC pain medications. This is the first time in decades that I have not needed daily OTC pain medications. I am so grateful to Dr. Hanson; his support staff at Grossmont Orthopaedic Medical Group; and the staff and surgical team at Sharp Grossmont hospital. It's not fun going to an orthopedist. However I've done my best to find the best. I've had two hip replacements that took about three days to recover. I remember taking a class at Grossmont Hospital. Cannot believe I would have to go through all of that BS. After the three hour class was concluded that asked how many people were in seeing Dr. Hanson myself and one other lady raise their hands. The head of the class then said all of these requirements Do not apply to Dr. Hanson. His Technique is different. This meant I do not have any of the restrictions as the others in the class. He explained everything to me and showed me a model,of a total versus a partial knee replacement. Before choosing Dr. Hanson as my surgeon, I had gone to about seven or eight surgeons. Although these doctors were considered top in their field, no one could compare with Dr. Hanson. Not only is he an extremely skilled top doctor, but he is also a caring and compassionate person. Both factors are equally important to me. Everyone at his office, from start to finish, Was a reflection of Dr. Hanson himself. From his PA's, Patrick and Kalie, nurse Ken and Millie, Dr. Hansen's scheduler, they were all very caring and concerned about my well-being. Within about 4 to 5 hours after surgery, I was able to put full weight on my replaced hip. I never needed a painkiller passed a couple Tylenols. I am headed in for my second hip to be done in a few weeks and never did I think that I would actually be excited for surgery. A good friend of mine who is an orthopedic surgeon referred me to Dr. Hanson for a total hip replacement after I consulted with other fine surgeons in the community and I am so glad he did. Dr. Hanson and his staff are friendly and professional. Simply great I may add. The staff at Grossmont Hospital was outstanding in their care and follow up post-surgery. The online rehabilitation program is well done and quite fun to progress with. What is really fun is to walk pain free and I can hardly wait to surf and ski again. Heck, 3.5 weeks after surgery I was walking 3-4 miles with no problem. Dr. Hanson, in my opinion, is the premier surgeon in San Diego for the anterior approach total hip replacement. Dr Hanson is as good as it gets. Over a period of time he has replaced both my knees and I never had one minute of pain from either. Upon entering rehab they knew right away Dr Hanson did the surgery because they said whenever a patient comes in from Dr. Hanson there are no complaints of pain. I went to Dr Peter Hanson for my knee issue. He came and spoke with me for a very short time, he didn't even look at my knee. My knee was looked at by staff who didn't even introduced themselves. They treated my like I was not there. They suggested Supartz knee injection. Different staff gave me injection every time I went there. During injection, they did not even talk to me and explain procedure. I had a total of three injections. After my second injection, the nurse told me, next time she withdraw fluid from my knee before giving me injection, but he didn't. The injection did not work at all. After first injection, I started to have flu like symptoms which became worse after second injection and I was really sick after third injection. I looked online for the side effects of Supartz Injection and I noticed flu like symptoms is in the list. I was scheduled to receive 5 injections. But after the third injection, I called the office and told the nurse "I think I have allergic reaction to Supartz". She was very mean to me and told me to go to emergency. After that, they never called me for follow up. Now, I went to another Dr and they told me, for Supartz to work, they need to first withdraw fluid from my knee, otherwise it does not work. My knee was swollen when I went to Dr. Peter Hanson's office, but they did not withdraw fluid before injection. I think Dr. Hanson just looking for his profit and not the patient's health. He and his staff do not care. I am very unsatisfied with them. read more

AT 65 I needed a total hip replacement. Did my research and found Dr. Hanson in La Mesa that does the Anterior Approach. After my first visit I knew he was the right doctor. He confirmed my research - the Anterior method was much more precise for setting the angle of the socket - If this angle is off the hip will fail in a short time. I have a 5" incision and the xray shows a precision job. He is a fantastic doctor, great sense of humor and very personable. Grossmont hospital was excellent as well. read more
