So here's the thing: people go to Peters' Drive-In for the milkshakes. The thick dairy-based milkshakes with so many delicious flavour combinations. The burgers are so-so (though my most recent visit here told me that the burger was better than I had remembered it being), the fries are fresh but almost always soggy, and the onion rings are surprisingly decent. But it's the milkshakes that really make visiting Peter's Drive-In worthwhile. We came here most recently and ate on the patio which was lovely on a nice summer's day. My toddler and I shared a maple walnut shake (I requested an extra cup for the toddler which worked amazingly well). The toddler loved the ketchup and fries though admittedly I was underwhelmed as expected by the fries. But it was nice eating outdoors on a standard picnic table and it was a delicious milkshake. I especially loved chewing on the walnut bits. From a pandemic perspective, it's great that there are separate entrance and exit doors, and the outdoor patio is pretty huge. So I've lined up 3 times since this place has opened. First time it was an afternoon of a weekday (going home after an appointment) and after a half hour, I hadn't even gained a spot. Gave up and went else where for s milkshake. Thought it was because of the entrance access backing things up way past two lights and decided to wait until the Calgary Trail entrance opened. Second time I went, Calgary Trail entrance was now the only one open. It was again the afternoon of a weekday but line up was only in parking lot. It took less than a half hour to get through. Happy customer reaching the food destination and got that tasty milkshake that I wanted. Third time, I seriously thought about ditching the line about 5 times. A couple of those times being right in the parking lot line. From pulling up on Friday evening and starting in the line on Calgary Trail (past the road that curves into it from the turn around area of Gateway Blvd), I waited to order past 45 min and had my food and tasty milkshake in my hands after the hour mark. That's intense! Now the food. Burgers here are ok. If you order a regular cheese burger, it's like having two patties. Both times, I found this location puts a bit too much ketchup and mustard on the burger as when I unwrapped the burgers, the bun and wrapper were covered (thus no burger photo or you would have only seen ketchup). Still a good tasting beef burger (meat wise) and I like that I don't feel gross after eating it. Just VERY full. Onion rings are seriously road trip snack worthy (and why I had originally fallen in love with Peter's drive-in back in Calgary many years ago). They don't fall apart as soon as you touch them but the batter isn't crazy thick either. Truly an enjoyable onion ring. Now the milkshakes. If you're like me, summer means milkshakes for the road, to enjoy on a summer night or heck just because you need cheering up. I'm not a gulp it down kind of milkshake person. I want to enjoy it over time. Extra awesome point here, you can choose up to three flavours. At the other locations, it's so thick that I can enjoy it over an hour driving. Again, that's why I've gone out of my way to Peter's in Calgary and made Red Deer my main pit stop now. I have to say with the two experiences of reaching my food destination, the second was more of what I expected to receive for their milkshake consistency. I'm hoping the other week was because they were training people and maybe that's why the consistency was off. As that first milkshake I was done by Sherwood Park. That's not normal to finish their milkshakes in less than 20 min. It was still good and I loved my flavour choice (one can't go wrong with banana-blackberry) but it left me wondering how such a small chain could be so different. I decided I wanted to give this location a second chance before writing my review. My milkshake yesterday was seriously the one I was expecting! I selected blackberry-raspberry combo and not only had it for my drive but for the whole length of time I sat out in the park freezing while watching the birds on the lake and picnicking with my very late supper. Yes you read that right. I drank a milkshake outside in crazy cold Alberta wind. I'm that kind of crazy Canadian. As it was close to closing time when I was driving away, I noticed the security guard had moved from his position by the building door to the front entrance of the parking lot. I can assume in the over half hour wait in the parking lot line that he had timed vehicle progress and realized he better stand out there to cut the line off. I appreciated the fact that he waved to me when things were clear to merge out to Calgary Trail (as unfortunately exit is going through the line up and you can't see other lanes when there's trucks back to back). The parking lot itself is kept clean (probably due to the fact no one was going inside so no chance of any littering). Staff at the windows super friendly. Order booth was again hard to hear, this time because the two orders were taken at the same time (there's two rows when you reach the order area) and the other time due to construction work. So I think in time they'll get better at dialling into the surrounding noise. Overall, I would return here. However if I see the line up is past the parking lot, I will confine on. Gas might still be cheaper than it was last summer but I can get milkshakes else where that are also decent in less time other locations. read more

Well I got in the first day and only waited about 25 mins. I hear some have waited 2 hours! That's crazy. I really like the burger and the milkshakes. Not the best of all time but really nice and homemade style. The milkshakes have tons of flavours too. Don't wait 2 hours for this though...Jacks in spruce grove is still top I think! I also liked the onion rings. Not much of a sides guys but they were really crispy! Liked them better than some that are quite soggy. read more

We went today to see what the fuss was about and waited about 40 minutes. At the drive-in, we got free Peters' air fresheners which added a nice touch! Staff was friendly, patient, and prompt. I didn't feel rushed ordering at all. The shining stars were the fries and milkshakes. The portions are quite generous, a small fries is equivalent to 1.5 of what you get in the Costco food court and the family size reminded me of a KFC bucket. There are tons of flavours to choose from for milkshakes and we ordered the peach and banana ones. The thing about the milkshakes here that separate it from the others is that they taste like the actual fruit! I was surprised that the banana milkshake didn't have that artificial banana candy flavour and in fact, tasted like a real banana. The burger was average, however. It reminded me of Harvey's so if you like their burgers, you'll probably like the burgers at Peters' too. The patties are quite thin, but I really like the Peters' sauce that's on the burgers. Would I say it's worth waiting for 2 hours? No, but it looks like the lines are getting shorter anyway so you don't have to worry about that! Mmmm yum yum yum, please if you all reading this are ever at a location where they have peters, do try it out. They have so many flavors to chose from. I tried the raspberry and banana, omg so delicious, we ordered from drive thru, thankfully there was no line because i hear the lines get very long. The staffs are friendly. At first it felt like i am picking something from a pharmacy because the people serving are wearing scrubs and i think i noticed shutters like pharmacy so that was very interesting for me. But regardless the uniform its a perfect Go to meal to take for a picnic. The fries are awesome and onion rings but the most most amazing was the Milkshake for sure. read more

It's finally here! Peters' Drive-In, a Calgary institution, has arrived in Edmonton!!! During its soft-launch it experienced over 100 vehicles lined up at a time. The restaurant design and layout are similar to the Red Deer location and the menu mirrors that of the original: burgers, shakes and fries. I would say the food here is on par with Calgary's quality which is far better than Red Deer's. Edmonton lucked out. Over the years, I've learned to keep my milkshake flavours simple. The flavour can get overwhelming quickly. If you already like Peters' food and drinks, then you'll like this location. If you don't, you won't. read more

The hamburger meet is pretty low quality and it's drenched in a red sauce. No lettuce or tomato on it. The onion rings are just plain battered and greasy. And $5.75 for a milkshake? Just nutty. I used to live in Calgary, so I was pretty sure what to expect and this Peter's was much as I remember. The burger was fine but they put too much ketchup on. I had onion rings on stead of fries. They are decent and they give you a lot. But the highlight of any Peter's run it the milkshake. It was thick and tasty. They have a large selection of flavors and a rotating flavor of the month. This was my first time at a Peter's Drive In... I got the hot dog- it was alright but nothing to write home about. It looked split and cooked on a flat top- I was expecting a grilled hot dog. I got mustard and onions- my favourite hot dog combo. I'll have to ask for extra extra mustard next time as it was non existent. The onions were a nice size and were fresh. Due to circumstances and LOCATION I have not been to Peters' for about a years or so. Use to go at least once every two weeks before retiring. So yesterday we decided to go to Peters'. Order 3 milk shakes, family fries and 3 double cheeseburgers. The fries and shakes were as good as we remember them being, however, the same could not be said for the hamburgers. What happened to the original Gus Peters' sauce? That sauce made the hamburgers great. Now, the sauce on our burgers yesterday tasted very bad like some kind of poor BBQ sauce. I don't usually do reviews on drive in chains because I consider them to be ubiquitous. They're places that you eat when you are in a hurry. But I just picked up my car and Peters' is basically next door to the car dealership plus it's not really a chain with only 3 locations so why not give it a try? I had eaten at Peters' original location in Calgary. That was so long ago I think that I still wore size 31 jeans. Enough reminiscing, I drove up and wasn't even sure if they were open. No cars anywhere, no people, nothing. The first drive through entrance was blocked but the second one was open so I entered. The menu was short enough to make decisions easier but I just wanted the basic burger with cheese. I know, everyone raves about the milkshakes but I'm not that hungry and the servicing on my car was over $1k so I'm happy with the basic burger and cheese. I live around 10 minutes drive away so when I got home the bun was still nice and not soggy wet. The burger was quite good actually. Not good as in compares to a fine foody café locally made burger, but it didn't cost $15 either. In fact it only cost $5.70. It did have two meat paddies despite the fact that I ordered the basic burger which should have only one paddy. Maybe they made a mistake. Either way it was good and better than any muti-national chain's burger. I certainly wouldn't wait a couple of hours like some people were doing when Peters' first opened last year but I didn't have to wait. Would I come back? Yes. But only if I really wanted drive in food. Once this COVID-19 situation is over I hope to return to owner operated local sit down cafés. If you are driving through and want a good burger at a good price point and a very handy location, I recommend Peters'. I don't recommend waiting for two hours in a silly first month line-up but obviously Edmonton is past that now. Four stars for Peters'. read more

Finally made it to Peter's Drive In on Calgary Trail after the hype settled down and I finally had time to go. It goes without saying that everyone knows Peter's Drive In in Calgary. It has been a landmark there since 1964 when Gus Pieters opened it at its original location on 16 Ave. They opened a Red Deer location in 2015 , and an Edmonton location in 2020. Want to know how good their milkshakes are? Well in 2014, on a single day they sold over 4 thousand of them. McDonald's does not even come close to these milkshakes ( if you like artificial ingredients ). What makes these milkshakes so good is they use real fruit , no artificial flavors or fillers. Pure milk, ice cream and plenty of flavors .You can choose any 3 combination flavors . Thats about 4500 different combinations . And boy are they a really thick milkshake too! Now for the burgers.. although the patties are pretty thin, they are delicious. It is nothing fancy. What makes it really good is the house sauce they use. It stands out. Single, double, triple patty. Cheese? No cheese. Each burger is on a plain bun with sauce , onions, mustard, relish . If you want lettuce, tomato, pickles, fried onions ( Instead of raw ), you have to ask - no extra charges but why saturate the burger with all those toppings. The burger is kinda put together quite sloppy but boy are they good. They do have veggie burgers as well. My shake and burger came out to about $13 without french fries. Sadly they do not have combo prices. All individual. As for their covid measures they have in place, you can not enter the restaurant at all. It is blocked off . An employee is standing there ready to take your order. When I was there yesterday , the employee there told me to stay outside while they complete another order. Guess you're not allowed to stand in the front door area if someone else is standing there. When I asked to see a menu, he said I had to wait outside. Holy shit.. good thing it was not minus 40 outside. Guess they want you to go through the drive thru inhaling car exhaust. He stated that these were AHS rules ( nice try ) . Sorry but no, everywhere else I can stand with others as long as we all wear masks. Anyway I left without buying anything, deciding to go back another time. This time the employee showed me a menu ( which was actually taped to the podium at the front door. Easy enough and was friendly and polite . Would I go back for their burgers and shakes... um yeah. Oh one final note.. those are not nurse uniforms they are wearing. The color blue on their restaurants and uniforms are Royal Dutch blue color. read more

Ordered a single with cheese and just mustard. They forgot the cheese so I had to come back and they offered cheese on the side which I refused for a cold burger. Had to wait over 10 minutes then was charged 84 cents for cheese which I wouldn't have minded if they forgot the Peter's sauce. Despite making a new burger the burger was cold and gross. Thought that I would try this new Hamburger Drive-In yesterday. Seeing that the drive-thru lineups were 12 to 15 vehicles deep plus rather confusing dual lanes, I had second thoughts about the wait.... should have listened to my "inner voice". I really don't know what the hype is about this place. I ordered a single Cheeseburger with onion rings and a bottle of water. First off, the prices seemed to be a bit high, but what really got me was the food. I had to search through the Hamburger bun to find the patty. It was almost non-existent, let alone tasteless. Way too much bun for the burger. The onion rings were almost as bad... I think that they are the pre-battered frozen ones that get thrown into the deep fryer. Went here 2 nights in a row to ensure consistency. I had the piñacolada milkshake and i loved it! It had the perfect texture, bits of pineapples, and thick but still fluid. We also ordered fries and beware, they serve it in huge portions. So the small size is good enough for 2 people. We didnt try the burger though. Reviews about it isnt great. They dont serve anything fancy or unique about it, its just a regular burger. Thin patty. Overall, my rating is solely based on the milkshake! read more

I would have given 4 stars but I was missing one of my burgers from my order and didn't notice till I got home which was very disappointing considering how long I was in the line up. I ordered 3 single cheese burgers tasted ok the bun was kinda hard (missing my sons burger so we had to cut one of ours in half); one order of onion rings and the box was only half full not the usual amount from Peters from Calgary or Red Deer; 3 milkshakes root beer, banana and pina colada...these we're delicious. Worst milkshake I've ever had. I ordered the bestselling chocolate and it tasted like milk with cheap chocolate syrup (and there was lots of syrup at the very bottom.) Mine also wasn't thick like everyone claims they are - must have been sitting on the counter for awhile. There was one spot that tasted cold and thick. The rest was room temp. If you think this milkshake is good, I feel sad for you. A Harvey's or McDonald's shake is a million times better. I will never go to Peters' again. Sadly I m having a case of regret for spending a hour+ waiting to have my order taken . The location they chose is certainly Golden. But for us mortals to wait 85 minutes to get up to the window to pay - the reward of Peter's food has to be much better than most other driving. I made my order usual for myself double cheeseburger, onion rings, milk shake. The burger was not all that warm -the hold temp needs to be raised 20 Degrees. The patties were more like round flat disks , chewy. Milk shake was large and not too bad. Onion rings came and were satisfactory. All this food was just under $18.00. I can think of other places that money would give me a better lunch or dinner. Once called the "best" in the country -Peter's has ground to make up. I don't know what the hype is all about. Burger was blah. No flavor, too much sauce. Ordered a plain cheese dog, got dog with sauce so they screwed that up. Fry's were cold. They were too thin and limp. Milkshake was too thick to drink. Sucked on the straw & it collapsed trying to draw up the milkshake. I would not recommend waiting in line for food here. So today I decided to go check out Peter's Drive In and see what all the fuss was about, major car line ups, so I'm thinking hey this place must really make a pretty great burger and shake. Well I wish I could say the place blew me away but...... this was not the case at all, So I ordered two doubles with cheese, mustard, Peters special sauce, onions, and also pickles, and fried onions. An order of onion rings, gravy, and a Strawberry shake. The bill was $26.99. So let's start with the positive, the onion rings were pretty darn tasty, to be sure, so much so I managed to have eaten all of them before I had even made it home. Once home I was all ready to chow on what I had hoped would be equally as satisfying burgers, but that's where things went south! The burgers were at best luke warm, no cheese on either of them no raw or fried onions on either of them, pickles on only one, and barely any mustard and an excessive amount of what I take to be Peter special sauce which was sort of tasteless really nondescript in flavor, and just made the overall bun nothing but mushy and soggy and very displeasing to eat. A total bust to be sure! Worse than McDonald's if that's possible. I tried tasting the gravy because they had not consumed any of it it was extremely mediocre and cold. But the biggest bummer of the whole thing, was the milkshake, I was expecting a really dynamite milkshake with pieces of strawberry real fruit like they said and there was not one strawberry to be had in the entire shake a total letdown Dairy Queen by far makes a way better milkshake than this ever will be. So like I said love to say it was a great experience, but to tell you the truth I thought it really sucked, a total disappointment. read more

Wow.. in the past I have been in long line of traffic with people going into this place in both Edmonton & Calgary...so I stayed at the hotel next door in Edmonton and decided to walk over and try it. Is this place a hype or? I think a hype... damn. The fries are overall average and overpriced.. the cheeseburger was like a dairy queen and I wonder just how fresh it is - it's like Schneider's you can buy at Sobeys. Milk shake - nothing special. I really dont know what the madness of this place is... there is nothing for me to go back. Charge me $15 for a good burger I will go...but good grief. I'm giving two stars because I'm trying to be kind. First of all the chocolate shake my wife had wasnt very good. The other flavors are better but found the chocolate one was almost bitter. Very weird. I prefer my burgers a little more well done. The fries are huge. The poutine tho was not good the gravy needs major work.At this point I would not return. The meal was not cheap. I decided to try out the new location in Edmonton and was very disappointed. I ordered a simple cheese burger and it was horrible! I was hungry but I could not finish it. It was very tasteless and soggy and gross. As I write this, my stomach does not feel well and I pretty much have an iron stomach. Stopped in for lunch. The burger was....meh. Not terrible, but nothing to write home about. The fries are pretty close to McDonalds fries. We ordered 2 single cheese burgers, small fries, and small drinks. I got a single cheese burger. They gave my wife a double. The protion of fries was huge...like 3 times what youd get with a large fries at McDonalds. The place is relatively clean. Its kind of sterile as far as atmosphere. We both agreed a 2 out of 5. Food was nothing special. Hot dog and fries to go. Enormous amount of fries, but hot dog was soggy and not really worth the price for the combo. Line ups were long when they first opened up - cars lined up all the way down Calgary Trail on one side and Gate Blvd on the other side. These days there are no line-ups.
