They didn't have what I was looking for - roast beef club - so they did their best to approximate it, and here's the kicker: this was $11. Look at the pictures. These days you can't open your front door and take a deep breath without it costing you more than $11. Look at the size of this sandwich! I don't know how they do it, but this place is absolutely recommended. Talk about bang for your buck, and GOOD! Please go and enjoy. read more

Pete's has been serving up the neighborhood for a very long time. We used to go at lunch in HS and get dollar subs. They were good sized sandwiches geared to us broke kids. It was a blessing at the time. My go to was and still is, cajun turkey, yellow American, lettuce, tomato, mayo on a round Portuguese roll. They also make incredible pepperoni bread, potato salad, chicken cutlets and a bunch of other goodies. I saw they had brownies, donuts, and crumb cake last time I was in. read more

First I want to say should be a 3 1/2 but can't do that You know I am a very tuff reviewer so 3 1/2 is a good score The place is small but very warm and staff is super friendly I got the chicken cutlet with fresh mozzarella and roasted red peppers with a balsamic glaze The sandwich was delicious very big portions and I got the small The only 2 negative things and I am being picky they cut cheese and meats in the same slicer no big deal but the little things Second and not really an issue but the sandwich was to big between all the layers a little hard to eat But let me finish by saying I will definitely be back the service and food was outstanding read more

Someone should educate the workers that are slicing the cold cuts that they're supposed to pull back the plastic on the meat before they start slicing it. I just had to manually remove the plastic from a pound of meat after nearly choking on it. That's not right, this is a choking hazard. Thank God it happened to me and not a child. I liked this neighborhood deli before this event. Now they will lose a good customer. Hopefully management will learn from this. Come on, this is basic stuff. An adult should know better. Please do better. Even worse, I'm pulling a hair out of my freshly made meatball now. It's not mine because I'm bald. I'm done with this place. Two strikes and you're out with me. When I'm paying top dollar for my food, it better not have any issues with it. read more

Went here for my birthday 9 days again hear they have great meatballs and the rumors are true the meatballs were amazing with the sauce and grated cheese it made my day. The staff were all very pleasant and informative nice older group it appears they have a loyal following I was shocked at how good it was I also tried the meatloaf also amazing . Definitely will be back for some other items ty for a wonderful experience All. Not a dime in spot more of to go but well worth the small line usually 6-8 at a time are in there but I see why . Good stuff read more

Pete's has been a Top Notch deli since the 80's. Let me tell you in 2021 it hasn't changed a bit. They make things the right way. The way most places do not know how to do these days. Pete's Broccoli rabe is outstanding. Never bitter. You can tell soak and it is cooked slow. THE ONLY WAY IT SHOULD BE DONE! They still bake their own breads. Their fresh Mozzarella is the best in the area. It compares to Hoboken's Fiore's. Which I have to say is very hard to compete with. FYI - Pete's only takes cash like Fiore's. Try Pete's deli. Owner is alway yelling at staff Staff very unhappy you can tell by the expressions on their face no one is ever smiling always break stairs On today's visit to order food found Pete making derogatory comments about staff When I made the staff that they kept taking other costumes before me. I got a look ! When I made them I was unable to stay that I couldn't do this today I started to walk out and don't come back . This tell me one thing he does not want to be there anymore and I will him and I will never return to give me any of my business or my family or friends will not go there. I am mad at myself for living in Nutley for 5 years and not hearing about this gem. It's tucked away on a residential street, and I've never seethed advertised before, but yelp happily led me to them. The place is tiny and busy with cases of deli meats, and Italian specialties such as ravioli, manicotti, etc that I assume they make on premises. Behind the counter they have fresh baked bread. Think old school Italian deli. My sandwich was delish! This place is a throwback to a better era when quality mattered and I wish them success for many more years. A place like this puts attention into a meal that a quick check or these gas station deli's can never replicate. read more

4.5 's?!?! This place deserves a MILLION!!! As soon as you walk in the door the smell of the place just SCREAMS "git ready---you're in for BEYOND good food!!!!" The owner Joe {NOT Pete:)}and his Assistant Manager JoAnn are the PHENEMONAL chefs and EVERYTHING is BEYOND epic!!! They are always cooking up eggplant for their justifiably famous parmigiana and along with that- their homemade meatballs, (red) gravy, pasta fagiole and broccoli rabe FLY out the door!! From my recent first taste of Joe's perfectly cooked thick dough pizza featuring his gorgeous gravy and fresh mutz (just $2.25 for a NICE sized square) I KNEW I'd never order from ANYWHERE else again (sorry Ralph among others---dems da brakes). Thanks to their LOVELY and talented counter staff working their magic on the fresh bread and TOP quality meats/cheeses, the sandwiches are PERFECTLY stunning as well. Joe runs a special on "student sandwiches" that start at $2.25- no school ID required.....PLENTY of smart adults in the know get them as well!! (shout out here to my pal Christine for that tip!! ;). Nutley is QUITE the Italian town and it's residents KNOW what's good. BEST advice is to order ahead....WELL worth the wait, but it's a great strategy -as the line is at times to the curb outside. This is not the fanciest deli you will ever walk into, and that's a good thing...i'm not sure why people need to be impressed each and every time they walk into a new place. Maybe it's more about the event than it is about the food..? And yes, as one review mentioned, it's cash only. I'm not sure why you need a debit card to pay for a sandwich, but if you do, sorry...not here. The best eggplant parm you'll ever have? got it. Fresh grilled chicken, chicken cutlet and broccoli rabe? you bet. The most tender and delicious meatballs that you could never make? you better believe it And those are only a few of the many homemade items you'll find at Pete's...all of which are fresh and delicious. So this place is on the main floor of a house. I've only known about this deli from a friend who got me the most incredible eggplant parm sandwich over the summer. I was in the area for lunch and thought, let me find this place. Inside there are 3 woman working the counter. Very old school so make sure you have cash. I ordered my sandwich, eggplant parm with hot peppers on a long roll. I had to run to the atm and when I arrived back, my sandwich was ready. I got it with a bag of chips, $9.00. It is the most delicious eggplant parm ive ever tasted. Not soggy at all. Eggplant to bread ratio is just perfect. I will definitely be back read more

Another case of Nutley locals being easily impressed with low quality food. I asked for an eggplant parm sandwhich and watched the girl heat it up in the microwave, whatever maybe it will be good. Only after shes done and I go to pay, I'm told they dont accept cards..... I scan the entire place for a sign saying "cash only" and there is none. The only sign i see is a large portrait of Donald Trump hiding in the back room. Was so hungry and craving a good sandwich, my friends go to petes deli so I was like ...why not? Ordered a sandwich, and it was excellent. Ordered a small container of potato salad and it was decent. The quart of "chicken" soup I got was awful. Wasn't even any chicken, mostly carrots and onions and celery and the broth was just soooo absolutely bland, it cost me $8...definitely a waste of $8 for bland tasteless soup. Oh, and when I went to pay, I take out my card and the lady told me it's cash only....I look around everywhere and see nothing saying "cash only". ....I know you probably have locals but there are new people that come in and don't know about it, put a sign up!!! Had to go all the way to the bank and back just for the bland soup. Kinda bummed read more

Absolutely the best deli in all of Nutley. I have been going to Pete's deli for well over 25 years. The cold cuts are fresh, the bread is delicious, Joanne who makes a lot of their food is an expert Italian cook - her eggplant parmagiana is to die for. The store is clean, the Pizza and stuffed breads amazing. Nutley is a small town - if you live here, this should be where you get your deli products! read more

I work in Nutley and a local introduced me to Pete's as the " GO TO" for the BEST deli sandwiches. WOW were they right. Ever since my first experience, I am hooked. I go in at LEAST once a week. Not only are the sandwiches out of this world, so is the eggplant parm, homemade soup and the homemade Anisette Cookies - ARE THEY GREAT OR WHAT!! What I love about this place are the PEOPLE that work there. they are sweet and they really get to know you. They always have a smile and are warm and welcoming. The breads they make the sandwiches on are fresh and just the right soft to crunch ratio. I could probably live off the bread!! The house made oven roasted turkey is just out of this world. so fresh, tender and puts any Thanksgiving turkey I have ever had to shame(Sorry Grandma) and last but not least - these people know how to nail the perfect sandwich. they also have a "junior" sized sandwich which is about 3 inches long and is perfect for a little lunch. I live off them. Pete's is worth the detour off of exit 150 off the GSP if you aren't in the area. Love it! read more

Pete's Deli is the last of a dying breed: a family owned deli where everything you taste is homemade. Hoagies (yeah, I call 'em hoagies) are great (a turkey, prov, L&T, oil & vinegar, fried long hots was orgasmic), their bread is amazing, they have anything you need for an antipast platter, but hidden gems are items like their eggplant parm, manicotti, ravioli, roast beef and pizza--all homemade. Bring cash, be prepared to take your food to go and leave your delicate sensibility at home--Pete's isn't really known for their patience or kindness, unless you're a regular then you're greeted with a smiling face. It actually pains me to write this review because I wanna keep Pete's all to myself. Yeah, this place sucks, stay away. read more

I was excited by the buzz around this place but when we got there the 3 people working weren't rude, but they seemed bothered that we were there. I figured it was worth it if the subs were great, but the rolls were too hard. Lots of delis in Nutely. I will find another one for my tailgate subs. read more

Eggplant Parm sandwiches have always been a comfort food for me so when I saw the raves here for the Eggplant Parm at Pete's Deli I knew I had to try them. Well. thank you fellow Yelpers! A very generous sandwich piled high with delicious eggplant and topped with a big thick slice of fresh mozzarella (you wouldn't believe how many delis cheap out and put sliced store bought mozz- Wrong!) This is a real deli, very small but clean with a couple of refrigerated cases and one frozen. The staff behind the counter couldn't have been nicer. A note, my sandwiches were waiting me for but were not hot. They did offer to warm it up but I knew I would have to heat them up for dinner anyway so I passed. But if you are ordering ahead and you want the sandwich hot make sure yiu let them know. Great find! read more

I have lived in nutley twenty years and have passed this deli numerous times but did not stop because it looked small. l stopped in today and boy I didn't know what I was missing all these years. ordered a sandwich and it was the best Italian sub I have ever had and I can eat. My man and I, still quite new to Nutley, tried this place having only read the one other Yelp review from Andrea D. Well, she was right! This place is great. And other folks must know that, because there's been a line every time we've been there. Thankfully, it moves at a good pace. I'm a vegetarian, and usually have an impossible time getting a decent deli sandwich. When I ask for swiss with lettuce and tomato, I want the same size sandwich as the guy who asked for turkey! Most places give me two thick dry slices of cheese, and I've got a measly little bit of nothing good to eat. Not so Pete's. They know EXACTLY how to make a thin-cut, stacked-high, cheese-piled-all-wavy hero! And they get the mayo and mustard just right. Ditto their meat sandwiches, which my man is happy to order. He says "it's a generous sandwich!" I second Andrea D.'s comment on their bread. I asked today, and they get it from Aromi Di Napoli bakery in Nutley. It's just wonderful. Some of the best bread I've had since I moved out of NYC and into North Jersey. We've had their potato salad, and it was great. The other salads looks tasty, though we haven't tried them. They also have pasta for sale in freezers-- I believe they make it themselves. We haven't tried that yet either, but we will. Lastly, the folks there just seem like nice folks. We gave them a big smile, and they returned it. We told them their bread and sandwiches were great, and they thanked us. That's the kind of pleasant and kind atmosphere I like, and I'm happy to keep giving them my business. (And eating their food!) read more

I get 3 meals out of it and i buy it when my friends come over and there's never scraps for my dogs. I've tried the meatball parm and it's pretty good. Meatballs are very iffy and you take a chance ordering them anywhere as few places make them good. I'll keep trying new things and check back. My only complaint is the woman at the counter acts like you're bothering her if you order. Otherwise this place is great.

Specifically their #1 Italian. And I'm happy to report: they're still the best around. (And it tasted even better after a recent not-so-good visit to a Jersey Mike's in my hometown.) Besides their incredible subs you'll find the usuals (chips, soda, ice cream) and a few random items (aspirin, Chapstick). Cool crew behind the counter. Good pricing for such a quality product.
