My fiance grew up riding his bike to Pete's for a sandwich in the summer, so he's been a fan for years. I later moved to Nutley and after hearing much about it finally got to give it a try- we got sandwiches to go and ate them on the train on the way to a Yankees game along with our beers in a bag :) Cajun turkey for us both, on fresh baked Portuguese rolls (that in and of themselves are simply perfection), with provolone - we differ on the peppers... roasted red for me and hot peppers for him. Bought large chicken soup to go yesterday only to find there is no chicken in the soup just pastIna, carrots, & celery. I called Anndee asked why there is. I got an Italian Sub with everything (why not? it's a very Italian place). 3/4" pile of ham, 1/4" salami and 3 or 4 slices high of provolone. I was a bit bummed to see they didn't throw in peppers or olives. Italian rolls have a bit of crunch, but are a little on the tougher side for my tastes. Service is a bit sluggish, but friendly. Pete's deli, some words that immediately come to mind - delicious, consistent, authentic. I have been visiting this deli since we started to walk to middle school back in 1996. back when the student sandwiches were just a buck and a quarter for a meat, a cheese, and lettuce & tomato on a tasty roll. We have pictures of us as wee preteens sharing sodas, pepperoni breads, and tarralles on the side of the building. Today its 19 years later (OMG) and I'm still visiting and ordering student sandwiches, ($2.50 now- but theyre the perfect size for a quick snack!) picking up pepperoni bread (or sausage or eggplant or chicken parm), tasting homemade pizza and cold cuts (whatever roast was made at xmas was cut down for me on the slicer and was so fragrant with rosemary and peppercorns - aye!!), or ordering hot sausage meatballs, coleslaw, or fresh mozz salad for a party. You cant beat Pete's. My only concern is as they move into the future, with close to 0 advertisement, how will they maintain the old school feel, prices, and flavors when faced with modern challenges? I grew up in Nutley and have lived in Manhattan for 3 years, but there is no Italian food that comes close to Pete's Deli. The bread, deli meats, cheeses, side salads, pasta dishes, and eggplant parmigiana are all spectacular: fresh, distinctive, and finding the right balance between tasty without being excessively unhealthy, you won't be disappointed with anything here. I have used Yelp for years but never signed up to write reviews....until now. Pete's Deli forced me to create this account. I recently moved to Nutley. Spent a year finding a good deli. Now I did. Words cannot describe it. From reading some of the reviews, I think others have captured it well. Old-world charm. A little sluggish but always friendly. (Actually, the "sluggish" review is really the "slower pace of life" that actually is a nice treat in today's hustle and bustle world) Don't expect fancy place (but who cares? you aren't eating the decor). Secluded and tucked away (thankfully!) but the food is absolutely autthentic. Getting fresh mozzarella after Church on Sunday with the crunchy long columbus rolls is the perfect Sunday breakfast and my new-found Sunday ritual. I lived across the Street on the corner of Race with my husband in the 1980's for 1 yr. and Joe always had the freshest Italian Coldcuts and it was a blessing to have them located right across the street. They are such nice people. It is great to see they keep it in the family and are still in business. Joanne, the beautiful, understated master chef will transport you back to your grandmother's kitchen if you are Italian and If you are not, you will finally "get it" about the superiority of simply made high quality Italian dishes. In my humble opinion, her egg plant parm and potato salad are the only store-bought (albeit crafted with love in this deli's little kitchen) are the only potato salad and egg plant that are worthy of purchasing. The bread is fresh and chewy, I am picky about my cold cuts and they use quality deli cuts that you can taste. This is the go-to place for Nutleyites who greet the speedy, adept, staff by name, because they've been coming here for ages. They know all about this little corner of heaven. Today I went to prepare for tonight's Tony Awards, and got my usual: sliced mortadella, sweet sopressatta, sliced mozarella, mac salad, potato salad, crusty Italian bread. I've been here twice and enjoyed it immensely both times. As most others here have said, it's a throwback italian deli located on a random road. I have only gotten sandwiches here but it's real simple- there's no menu (or I havent seen one), i just tell them what I would like on my sandwich, pick what bread i want it on, and bam! A delicious italian hero just for me just the way I want it! Things seem to move quick here--know what you want. The sandwiches I get are usually something involving sopresatta, capicolla, prosciutto, extra sharp provolone, and such. I can't comment on anything else, but I liked what I got. The only thing I had there was the eggplant parm. because someone recommended it, and it was very good--very thin layers piled high. Went back another time for it and it was sold out. The worker told me I have to come in early because it goes fast, but don't know how early. I don't buy lunch at 10 a.m. Nothing else appealed to me so I left.
