I love Pete's hard to find unique and import items. If you're looking for respite from the never-ending monotony that is shopping at the regular grocery stores, I definitely recommend it here. When you walk into the store, the first thing you notice is all the British imported food and snack items.. Reminds me a lot of my childhood and I usually buy something for nostalgia sake. Right beyond that is beverage display case with all sorts of drinks you'd rarely see elsewhere. I especially enjoy their local and import ginger beer selection, as well as Ribena. Beyond that the store is a mixture of exotic cheeses, excellent produce, a deli, health food aisles and the British butchery. This butchery is especially known for its Nova Scotia lamb, which is the best I've bought anywhere around here. The beef steaks are a close second. Needless to say, due to the nature of the products sold here, the prices are exorbitant.. I keep Pete's as a treat to go buy a few luxury food items if I haven't entirely blown my food budget for the month. If my budget hasn't been blown yet, it's sure to be so once I'm done at the Frootique. While many of the items are quite unique, there are many food items that are..items which can be purchased at your regular grocery store for half the price (ie. many of the dairy products). I also think the space the store occupies is much too small... you constantly feel like you're in a traffic jam trying to navigate the narrowly jam packed aisles, and always a hair breadth away from knocking things over.. the store is so cramped, I picture knocking something over as having a domino effect.. dropped a bag of chips?...there goes the whole aisle. The check out staff are fast, friendly and on the ball with keeping registers open. I don't necessarily see this as good customer service, though... since the store is so cramped, if long lines were to form then customers in line to pay would take up half the retail space (I've seen this happen here more than once). I definitely recommend this place, though, even if just to window shop. You might discover something new on every visit. read more

It's interesting to me how different the selection is at Sunny Side Mall compared to the one downtown on Dresden. Don't get me wrong, both have glorious selections of fresh meat, seafood, produce, baked goods, and cheeses...and everything else. But the Bedford shop caters more to suburban foodies while the one downtown focuses on ...well the downtown crowd. While I normally visit the downtown shop, here's where I come when I run out of my favorite Kozlik's mustard (best on earth) from Toronto, among other things. The cafe/deli area is very different as well and I love the different kiosks - in the mood for soup - at least six tasty choices in cute cauldrons? In the mood for pasta or pizza - ditto delicious, ditto many options. read more

I spend many Sunday's visiting good ole' Pete's Frootique! It is one of my favourite things to do on a Sunday! We usually head out in the early afternoon and get a sandwich from the deli. I absolutely love them!! They have HUGE with a lot of great tasting meat and veggies loaded on them. I love their home made tasting bread! After that, we head over to the shake bar and get a fruit smoothie. We enjoy going to Pete's for our produce for a few reason's. Number 1, it's ALWAYS fresh and number 2, there is always different fruits and veggies to choose from. You get to try different produce from what is your typical grocers produce. Pete's also sells a good variety of ethnic spices and foods. read more

WOW I sure miss the real Pete I must say what a disappointment! I have been shopping at Pete's for almost 15 years during the summer months. I ordered a whole beef tenderloin four days in advance to be ready for 10 AM needless to say at 10:30 it wasn't ready! The attitude that the young man gave me at the counter was ridiculous he basically said I didn't take the order, it's not my fault it's not ready. I guess they don't check the orders that they have to get ready for the day and leave the customer hanging around to wait for it to be done. He then proceeded to get the beef tenderloin and prepare it and say oh it'll be ready in 10 minutes nice and fresh for you. As I'm standing at the counter with my arms folded watching him prepare my beef tenderloin I'm listening to him and his colleague complain about picky customers The Lady at the meat department was very professional apologized for not having my order ready and gave me $2 off a LB. Half an hour later and $140 for my tenderloin I was off to the cashier . As I went to the cash there were three people in one line up the other cashier was empty with her back towards the cash register,I inquired are you open? her response " well I wouldn't be standing here if It wasn't " .........Really? I think a better response would've been yes I am. The produce is the same stuff you can get at any supermarket, not like it use to be. The Quality and selection of meat at Pete's is terrible for the price you pay. The beef tenderloin was ok but I could have got the same thing anywhere else for less. The imported British foods are great. There's NOTHING SPECIAL about Pete's anymore! read more

This particular Pete's location is the original Pete's and thus occupies a pretty huge area within the Sunnyside Mall. Tons of options at this Pete's! I once popped over to the Bedford location when I needed chestnuts for stuffing. Initially I wasn't able to find them anywhere and when a Pete's grocery employee spied me he happily jaunted out back to check for more. He was able to rouse a massive bag of chestnuts, and pretty much save the day in the process! Great juice bar, sushi bar and deli! read more

Oh Emm Gee. If I could I would live in Pete's. Pete's is a lot like Costco. You go in determined to buy only the one or two things on your list, but leave with a dozen other goodies you just couldn't pass up. Every section of this store is done well: produce, cheese, meats, desserts ... it's impossible to not visit every section and at least be tempted to load your basket. Their deli has too many awesome foods to mention here. Pete's is our go-to place for anything fresh; no other grocery comes close. At first glance it may appear expensive, until you actually compare prices with other stores; you may find, as I did, that many items are actually cheaper than the big chains. Extensive selection, brands not carried in other stores, friendly and knowledgeable staff, reasonable prices ... it's all you could ask for in a supermarket. read more

I went into Pete's Frootique thinking it was just a little fruit and vegetable market. I was surprised to find it to be a full grocery store with items from Europe among other things I've never heard of and/or seen before. I went in only for a bag of apples and maybe a few veggies so I really wasn't prepared for grocery shopping. I'll have to return again prepared next time. read more

Foodies paradise. I can spend hours perusing the shelves in this fabulous store, finding tasty gems from around the world. This time, I was thrilled to find Walkerswood Jamaican Jerk Seasoning - something I had only seen in Jamaica. It's the best jerk seasoning for jerk pork/chicken/etc. In addition to groceries, you can fill your belly at their sandwich/soup/salad counter. You select the meat/cheese/veggies/condiments and bread, and they'll hook you up. I especially love the wide selection of salad items. Just point to what you want, they will up their mixing bowl and tossing up with your favorite dressing. All ingredients are high quality, fresh and delicious. I wish we had Pete's in NC! read more

The original Pete's is the bomb-diggity-yeah-yeah-yeah. The place has a jaunty Euro atmosphere, perfect for sporting a sweet little tam and starting every sentence with "darling." I love the layout of the Bedford Pete's. It's more of a market style situation, with separate little shops offering different delicacies and tasty dishes. Their smoothies and salads, are of course, wonderful. But you can also get fantastic sweeties as well as fancy cheeses and olives. I think I just like this location so much because it's the original, the paradigm, the One. I remember going here as a kid and thinking it sure was something special. I also recall the Sunday shopping debates when Pete luckily won and was able to stay open seven days a week. This diverse shop is worth the trek from Hali, especially if you have an auto. And plus, you can swing by Pete's inspired wine shop for some international vinos when you're done picking up your groceries! read more

Today I woke up with a hankering for a really good sandwich so it was off to Pete's! You have to love a grocery store where can grab good cheese, fresh guacamole, Galaxy bars, Walker's crisps AND a fresh made to order awesome ham sandwich. The half sandwich is more than enough for me. The ham was carved right there in front of me. Today I chose multigrain bread and mayo with smoked gouda lettuce, tomato and sprouts. Meh I find most of their stuff to be significantly overpriced. They have upped the price on their salads significantly while at the same time making them much smaller. The only thing Petes is really good for is produce. Pete's wants to give the impression that they are a caring local business when in fact they are only worried about the bottom line. Also with the closing of the Wolfville store it begs the question of whether the company may be in trouble financially and whether this could be the reason for all the price increases and decreases in quality. read more

All the UK goods you could want (except Bovril which you can't import from the UK due to BSE) along with other international foods (great for getting everything to do a curry). I enjoy this location far more than I do the downtown Pete's. Being the flagship store, there's a much more european market feel to the layout. Instead of having counters flanking the dry goods (which is how the downtown store is laid out), Pete's in Bedford has scattered the different "markets" throughout the store, ensuring that you get the maximum exposure to the specials of the day. Pete's is always known for the quality of the produce and the availability of out-of-the-ordinary fresh foods and meats. The cheese stand is amazing and one of the best places in the city to find unique cheeses. The Best of Britain section brings together a collection of imported teas and specialty UK goods for those among us who miss the Old Country. No visit to Pete's in Bedford would be complete without ducking into Cristall and Luckett - the specialty wine shop set up as a complement to the full store. Always love the unexpected at Pete's. I am a big fan of the Italian Sausage Patties which are good when you dont want to break down sausage for a recipe. Also, do love the butchers there who are generally very knowledgable. I do find that the people at the Bedford Deli location are not really that organized and always seem to be struggling with codes and the like. Always very friendly however, a def plus. read more

I'm still swooning over their cheese selection. The cheese. Oh the cheese! That Dutchman's Gouda! Welsh Collier! Cheddar and swiss and bleu! I was in heaven. Even without the giant cheese selection, I walked out of there happy to have poked my head in (and with $25's worth of cheese). It's a bright and colourful shop that has so many new delights at every turn. Yes, of course, you'll find plenty of fresh produce and a spectacular deli section, but there's also a good selection of grocery products. Most exciting, however, is their imported section, which has a varity of candies, canned goods, sauces, and even sodas (cherry Coke FTW!) at reasonable prices for imports. All in all, it's a wonderful place, and might be my new reason for making the trek out to the Sunnyside mall. read more

I come from a smaller town and didn't expect to have such a selection here in Bedford but I always walk away with my arms full of fresh veggies and herbs and of course protein! There's a LOT to love about Pete's because there's a lot there. And you can find things there that you can't find anywhere else. The variety of bread (including bread from bakeries all around and even Montreal real bagels!) alone is amazing. And the cheeses are even better. They have lots of imported foods and great condiments, and preserves, as well as unique imported foods. If you're a foodie, you HAVE to go to Pete's, you'll love it, and like me, it might be hard to get out of there without spending much more than you intended. The whole experience and the presentation is great too - it's an upscale market style like you find more in larger cities in the States. It's very crowded with food so moving around even is a challenge but a fun one. But.... while that's all very, very good, and I love the food selection. But there is a bit of a down side. There's something very factory-like in a place that tries to be very old-Europe styled. The staff are not always very friendly and seem bored. I wish the service was up to the level of the products. But it's not. Still, go for the food... just don't expect the staff to carry the experience. Too bad. :( read more

He has the tonic water I love which I cannot find many places and that is FeverTree. He also has a selection of teas, coffees, and craft colas and higher quality chocolate. Not all his bagged teas are good (theres PG tips and Typhoo) and low British brands but he has a lot of high end loose estate teas (green, black) etc which are good aswell. I really like the Bedford Location as its cozy although its not in my area. Both locations are good. He is far above Costco in selection of specialty foods. I also like the fact that he has very tasty mustard (Colemans)! and Dijons. The only thing I can say is that he may be more expensive if you can find the same things in other stores you may get them for less, although other businesses rarely keep up with the quality merchandise that he does. If you go to Pete's Frootique in Bedford, do yourself a favour and pick up the sweet potato gnocchi and a container of pesto. This is one of my favourite meals ever, ever, ever, and it's ready in probably 10 minutes and is as easy to prepare as Kraft Dinner. It's worth the drive to Bedford and the Sunnyside Mall parking lot dramaz just for that gnocchi. Their produce section is always wonderful, and the staff are very knowledgeable and friendly. Very crowded. Incredibly over priced. Great produce. Most of their grocery can be found elsewhere for much cheaper. For example, bulk barn sells most, if not all of their "best of Britain" department. And most of their other expensive groceries can be found in the organic sections of superstore or sobey's. So many people think that Pete's is so incredibly unique, but really, all they're good for is produce. It's fresh and there's always a wide variety. Other than that, all Pete's is good for is brainwashing and emptying your wallet. read more

I love Rowntree's Fruit Pastilles, but I haven't had them since I was a kid, and I just thought they stopped making them or something. So I was happy to find a bag of them on the candy shelf in the British grocery section. And they also come in the familiar rolls. One of my favourite places to shop, especially when the mall isn't too busy. With a wide variety of produce, fresh meats, and more speciality choices than I can find in my local large grocery store shopping at Pete's means I will go home with everything on my grocery list. During busy times it can be hard to maneuver a shopping cart through the parking lot, I don't hold this against Pete's, it is just the reality of shopping there. read more

My days can be quite busy, so instead of eating trashy take-out food at home, I pick up the pre-prepared chicken, pork and beef dishes at the butcher, freeze them and then pop them in the oven for an inexpensive, gourmet dinner! read more

I have always popped into Pete's when I can, or when I think about it. But over the past few weeks I have grown a new appreciation for this wonderful establishment. I was par taking in a group "Cleanse" for 21 days in Febr. This cleanse consisted of only Fruits and Veggies. So...as you can imagine I was buying alot of those nutritious goodies. What really impressed me was on one of my main grocery visits to re-stock produce there had been a snow storm the night before. The grocery stores would have been bare shelved the following morning from all the worry warts who thought the storm was going to be the end of the world as we knew it. So I didn't even bother trying there. I went right to Pete's as soon as they had opened that Sunday and was over joyed to see ALL their produce was freshly re-stocked.. Peppers, greens, tomatoes, mushrooms etc...all loaded up in an abundance. I was a happy girl as I was expected everything to be picked over. A few other nice things Pete's offers.... -The lovely piano playing that we as shoppers get to enjoy. Such a nice touch. -A huge selection of LOCAL deli, meats from the butcher, bakery goods, cheeses! -one of the newest perks..THE FREQUENT BUYER CARD! I shop quite regularly at Petes. It's normally a little pricier than most of the other stores around but the selection makes it worthwhile. Until today. I dropped in to pick up a few items that I wanted, one of which was a nice Fennel bulb as an after dinner snack. I read 3.99 on the sign and thought, oh well, it's Nova Scotia. You can buy this stuff in Montreal for a dollar a bulb anytime. Imagine my surprise when I was going through the checkout and it rang up at $9,10. I queried the cashier and she confirmed that yes, the 3.99 was by the pound and if I wanted it that that was the price.. I paid for it and left, but rest assured that never again will I bother to darken the door of your store. read more
