Bulk Barn can be dangerous if you are hungry. I love going to the bulk barn and stocking up on some of my spices. I like the fact that you can regulate the quantity of them so if you are just wanting to try something you are able to do that as well. Now the Candy isle is great especially when you are going to the movies. I like variety so you can get some small bags and a bit of this and a bit of that and it will fit right into your pocket. YUM!

Up until recently, all my years in Halifax were spent car-free (not to be confused with CAREfree; I…read morehad many, many cares) and living on the Halifax side of the harbour. As such, there were many places in places as relatively downtown Dartmouth I'd never been to, let alone as far out as 2 Boys Smokehouse and Deli. Now that I'm living on the Dark Side and have a sweet set of 2016 wheels, I made the effort to hit up 2 Boys for a late lunch and for some of their carnivorous wonders when I was in the area one day. Despite it being mid-afternoon, there was a steady line at both the meat and sandwich counters. I was hitting both - grabbing a couple smoked pork chops, double-smoked bacon and some Black Forest ham at the former, and the mixed meat sub at the latter. You can choose from a large swath of options for breads, cheese, toppings and sauces, and I appreciate that there's no up-charge for things like smoked gouda. Twelve bucks for a big ol' sub, and that's that! I attacked my sub once I was back in the car, although I opted to only have half of it before heading home. I forgot to ask, and now can't readily find the answer online, but the meats in the mixed meat appeared to be salami, ham and donair. A true Nova Scotian sub! The smoked gouda held its own against the hearty meats, while a generous helping of lettuce, tomato, bell pepper, and red onion brought crunch and freshness. For a sauce, I went with their "sub sauce" which seems to be an herby vinaigrette, and its tanginess helped cut through all the big, rich flavours and add some zing. A step outside my car to brush the crumbs off myself and the seat, and I was on my way home. My next time back at 2 Boys found my wife and I looking for a quick lunch in the Cole Harbour area after having gone for a walk on the Salt Marsh Trail. Once again, despite the mid-afternoon time, there was a constant flow of people in and out of the store, but luckily the ticket system was getting put to use today, so in spite of the poorly-formed line, the individual numbers helped keep things moving along. This time around, I went for a ham sub, while my wife got the Montreal smoked meat sandwich. I continue to be a big fan of their toppings options, especially the inclusion of ostensibly more "premium" cheese like the smoked gouda with the regular items - without an extra surcharge. Staff guided us through the sandwich construction process deftly and with a smile, which can't be easy with the constant onslaught at 2 Boys. This time we sat down at one of the small, two-person tables along their storefront, to take in the sights, sounds and smells of Cole Harbour Road. There was a good amount of ham, with the layers of lightly sweet and salty meat generously topped with my chosen toppings of lettuce, onions, bell peppers, tomato and cucumber. The smoked gouda added some more umami oomph to the sandwich and having had my sandwich toasted brought out the flavour of both the meat and cheese more. My wife's sandwich went over well, as she's a big fan of Montreal smoked meat. I prefer it when it's been heated, like in the delis where it originated, but even at fridge temperature, the peppery bite of the smoky meat comes through well. The regular white bread was pushed to the edges of its structural integrity with the stack of meat, but it *just* managed to hold on. Whenever I'm in 2 Boys Smokehouse & Deli, I feel like a kid in a candy store, with so many great options - both the sandwiches, and the deli and grocery items. It's a diamond in the strip mall rough, and one that I'll be frequenting when I'm in the area.

Rotten centers in the sweet potatoes being a regular occurrence. Items I would normally buy there I had to shop elsewhere for as they werent fit to take home. They have expanded the ready made section and I often grabbed something for the drive home to snack on. I didnt care for everything I tried but would not return something simply because it wasnt to my liking. Last week I purchased some hot pepperoni for the drive home. Ive been eating pepperoni since I was a kid. I like hot. I do not like mild or honey garlic. I was disappointed as it turned out to be mild. I checked the label but it was marked hot. So this week when I went in I grabbed my items as well as a package of pepperoni around the same price. I brought my receipt and the pepperoni purchased earlier. I have never returned anything to Daves in my life and actually just wanted an exchange. After paying for my other items and waiting for a manager I was denied an exchange and told it wasnt their fault just because I did not find it hot enough. I have had to return things to Giant Tiger, Costco, Sobeys and superstore. I have always been treated well and never given a hassle. This is not the customer service I expected. I was embarrassed and made to feel like I didnt know what I was talking about and I was wasting busy peoples time. They have lost a customer in me and 3 family members as well.

Reservation is easy and there's still plenty of spots for Friday lunch with same day booking. The vibe here is relaxing and quiet with the restaurant entrance hidden inside a hotel. Service is good too. The chef has demonstrated quite solid cooking skil and my suggestion is to go with the fancier dish here where the chef clearly pays more attention to, compared to dishes like fish and chips. I tried a classic cocktail with gin as the base. It turned out to be very refreshing. For food, Caesar salad was delicious. Pan fried cod fillet was cooked perfectly, very tender and went well with the roots vegetables. It was my favorite dish here. Lobster pasta was also delicious. Fish and chips were average, definitely not comparable to some of the food truck places. Fries were dry and tasted bitter. Overall, this is a good restaurant with great food quality, good service and nice environment. I would consider revisiting if I'm in Halifax again.

We've had a trip planned to golf Cabot for the last few years. The texts and emails were flying delays, cancelled trips and in general , I never thought it would happen. Surprisingly, Halifax was a quick little flight from Toronto and am I ever glad we did it. First off, we talked about getting lobster on the side of the road at shacks etc, blah blah blah but as soon as we landed we headed to meet a friend who said we must try this lobster croissant sandwich at The Drift. OMG OMG OMG ! Could be one of the best sandwiches I've ever tasted but you know what was even better, the Chablis, no, the lobster pasta, no... It was the lobster fritters. They were insane ! The fritters are a bit like a conch if you've ever had that in the BVIs but they are battered so perfectly with a zesty hint of like that is so perfect, it's too hard to describe. Over the top crispy timbit deliciousness with lobster. The drift is a MAJOR win, it's along the water in Halifaxs best hotel the Muir and it's just perfect. Our trip was filled with Oysters and I have to say, each place had slightly different variations but I will NEVER say I had a better Oyster than in Halifax. If you hear me say it, just call me out because we had at least 4 Oysters each at around 6 places and they were all better than anywhere I've ever eaten in the world, almost to the point where I didn't need the sides (almost). I am so glad I visited Halifax, oh and by the way, the golf at Cabot was insane ! INSANE ! Was it better than Cabot St Lucia ? Nope, but I give Cabot St Lucia a 9.8 and I give Cabot Cape Breton a 9.6. STOP right there ! I had the crab shack , I had the crab shack and oh my gosh was it good. Just outside Cabot is the best little shack with the freshest little sandwiches on fluffy buns. Check it out right here- get the mainlander sandwich and the crab bretoner. The mainlander is warm lobster spiced up on the bun, heaven ! And the crab bretoner is chilled crab, mix up perfectly with aioli, green on and a few other things. If you're near Inverness you better stop there. Ok ok ok , I'm writing all of this as I go but on the Sunday we end up at the 5 fishermen. Order the lobster, the carbonara lobster , the chowder and Oysters at every single place you go in Halifax and thank me later. I wasn't expecting to love the food this much, wow ! If you're there on a Sunday, hit Durty Nellys. In my Opinion it's the best pub in the world- yep ! See ya next week :)

It came with soup (maybe 3/4 cup), there was a couple of scallops and a couple of shrimp but you had to hunt for the lobster. It was very cold in the restaurant. We took off our coats but quickly put them back on. I don't think the heat was on at all or on very low. The most disturbing thing was when they take the food up they sit it on the counter where people go to pay for their meal. Your food is sitting uncovered, getting cold and strangers are standing over it and breathing on it while paying their bill. Save your money for a restaurant where your hard earned dollar is appreciated. I will NEVER go there again.

However, now that my wife and I have moved back to the city and have motorized transportation, both a walk in Shubie and a meal at the new resident of the food stand, Bao Journey, were on my radar. Bao Journey started out as a stall slinging their wares at farmers markets in the city, but took the leap to a more permanent location when the spot at Shubie Park opened up. We arrived in the mid-afternoon on a sunny weekend day, and there was a steady stream of people coming and going with varying degrees of refreshment and sustenance. Of course, you can't be a food shack in a park in Canada without crowd pleaser like ice cream, cold drinks and fries, but beyond those basics is where their menu gets interesting. Of course, there's a few different versions of their namesake item, bao - BBQ pork, chicken, vegetable and egg custard. Other Asian options include zongzi (sticky rice dumplings), pan fried dumplings, fried shrimp or pork siu mai, chow mein, sesame balls, both spring and egg rolls, and several types of Taiwanese omelettes. We weren't looking a full meal, so we went with the pan-fried dumplings and a BBQ pork bao, as well as a lemonade. We got the lemonade and bao right away, but the dumplings were cooked to order, so they took about 15 minutes. The lemonade tasted homemade and hit the spot on a hot, summer day. Our bao was a textbook example of a great bao - pleasantly chewy dough, with a perfect ratio of dough to filling, and the filling itself had tender, toothsome chunks of cha siu and that signature sauce that's sweet, savoury and a little salty. The only downside was that we had only bought the one to share! The pan-fried dumplings took a little time, but they were worth it. They were round dumplings, pleated in a similar fashion to xiao long bao (soup dumplings), and although they were quite juicy, I wouldn't say they were at a soup dumpling level. The meat was tender and flavourful, and the dipping sauce had a noticeable layer of sweetness. A second visit to Bao Journey found my wife and I there in the fall, during the last few weeks of their season. The Taiwanese omelettes were 86'd for the remainder of the season, so we decided to try out their chow mein with minced pork, and since it was the right season, a mooncake! The cute mooncake was ready right away, while the noodles were cooked to order. It was made with a cute little animal-shaped mold, and of the three fillings that were available, I went with the egg custard. It was generously filled, and the smooth and rich egg custard was a nice little pre-entrée dessert. The noodles didn't take too long since they weren't as busy as they would have been on a summer day, and we eagerly dug in when they were ready. The noodles and veg had a little hit of wok hei to them, and a dark, soy-based sauce covered the noodles in savoury and salty goodness. The minced pork was on the side doing its own thing, so we scooped it onto the noodles as we went, and it was impressively tender without being overcooked like some meat-based sauces can be. Happily satiated, we continued through the park, taking in the fresh air and beautiful fall colours. I'm glad that Shubie Park is attracting food vendors that go beyond the lowest common food denominator, and I'm looking forward to many future hikes that will hopefully be fueled by Bao Journey.
