I used to love shopping at this store. Beautiful produce section and great products. Unfortunately, the quality of the products, selection, and the store in general have declined. Recently I purchased a cake for Thanksgiving only to find that is was sold to me past its expiration date. The store customer service associate did allow me to swap it for a fresh cake, but I wasted time making a second trip to the store. Also, the taste and quality of the cake (the fresh cake), produced by Chicago Sweet Connections Bakery, was truly awful. I can't imagine anyone buying a second cake produced by this wholesale bakery. Pete's used to carry scrumptious cookies and cakes. Maybe Pete's has new ownership or management. Disappointing. read more

Sure about Pete's market. But I happen to go to the one that's on avenue O and 118th street. That is my store it is so clean so plentiful has everything I need one stop shopping. I do not need to go anyplace else this is my to go store. I got to take two buses to get there but it's worth it. They make the best salads in the world and the desserts and the people are so patient they smile. I bought some salad and it's spilled the woman help me wipe it up and everything and they got me another one I give this five stars with no problems. read more

The management is not friendly and I have seen them embarrass front line employees in front of customers. Their produce does not have a long shelf life. You have to consume what you purchase within a few days or it will quickly rot. If you factor in the spoilage amount, their pricing does not seem so cheap. Even if you buy a small amount. If it is not consumed quickly then you will lose some to spoilage. This is not the case when you shop at other nearby grocery stores whose produce seems to last longer. But, to their credit, they do have a very good deli with friendly attendants. I have had friends get sick from the raw and cooked purchased chicken here. I once desperately, I was too tired to cook dinner, purchased a rotisserie chicken here and it was tough and dry. How long did it sit in the warmer?? Another time, I purchased the cooked Greek style lamb and accompanying lemony potatoes with olive oil and it was delicious. Once again hot food attendants are friendly. They advertise imported Italian coffee at their cafe portion in the store, yet I know what they served me was not typical high quality Italian coffee? I am a coffee snob, and the coffee sold here is not of high quality at all. The cakes sold here are decorated beautifully, yet their appearance does not live up to the taste test. Looks great but tastes mediocre. My advice is, stop here only if you absolutely need to. Otherwise, your money is better spent at other nearby grocery stores like Strack and Van Tills. I refuse to support businesses with lousy working culture for front line employees, like Walmart. read more

Great selection... The bakery goods, especially the cookies are in my top 3‼ The hot guacamole is great! They need to keep it in stock. The Hot Bar is pretty good for a buffet, it seems like they really care about what they put out there, but a little too pricey IMO. The aisles are also too narrow. The one thing I can say about Pete's Fresh Market though is that I can pretty much find everything I want in one place but you're going to pay a premium for that availability. They do have some sales on some great items sometimes though. The last time I was in there I was directed to go to the customer service desk for faster service and I know the guy meant well but it turned out to be slower and way more inconvenient than waiting in the line I was already in... because the person behind me left the store, while I was still waiting for my cashier to scan all my items. Still a great store all around. Highly recommend this location. Hopefully one day they'll expand like the one in Matteson, IL. read more

This review is for the premade food. I recently stopped and was looking at the Pokè bowls. The gentleman behind the counter saw me and saw me put it down...I explained I couldn't have it because it had too much rice and I'm a diabetic. I was told by Diane R that she they weren't bagging orders because of COVID. She refused to bag my 60$ order when right next to us another employee was bagging orders. This place is far, far better than any Dominick's or Jewel... They have a huge produce section with a lot of inexpensive, good produce. Their meat department is huge, with a lot of variety that you don't find elsewhere. Their deli is great--the same brands of meat are 1/2 the price of what they might be at Jewel/Dominick's. Their prices are generally better than other grocery stores, too. The store is bright and clean (nearly brand new, opened in 2006 or so). The only complaint I have is their sales are purposely tricky... Like they might have 2% milk on sale for $1.99 but skim and whole are $3.99... Or Diet Coke is on sale but regular coke (or one of those weird Coke flavors) are not on sale... read more

I looooooooove Petes. I was first introduced to Petes while tagging along to AJWright and Dollar Tree which are in the shopping center as Petes. Since my first trip I've been hooked. I take two buses to go here.It is defitnely worth it. When you first walk in you will be amazed by the produce. I know I am. Everything is fresh and organized. They often have a mixture of fruit cups- canaloupe, watermelon, kiwi, strawberry,etc. They have a lot of hispanic products. The prices are great. My must haves from there are the fruit, they have beef/chicken fajitas already seasoned, chicken breasts and buffalo wings seasoned, guacamole( love guac), almond milk, and their cupcakes. The lines are never long when I go there. I'm usually in and out. The staff are friendly and willing to help out. They also have hot meals you can get as well. And they are close at ten pm every day.! read more

OK, this is a good place. Just like many of the other "Petes", it seems to have everything you need. Actually this one in Hegwisch took a CLOSED Dominick's and transformed it into a very Upscale Food Store, but with a Mexican Tilt. Meat Section is Great, Deli section is OK, Takeout section (Don't go there Hungry) is fantastic. Everything seems to be well stocked and neat. A big Highlight has to be their Bakery Section. You got to check out their "Atomic" and Tres Leche Cakes. Mexican Sweet Bread alongside American Favorites are plentiful and taste's great. One other thing, Pete's is one of the few places you can find "Hienies" Hot Sauce, by the Gallon. (Checkout my review about Hienies Shrimp House.) This place doesn't really put any of the Mom and Pop Stores out of Business, but really just raises the Standard of how a Food Store Should be. Big Day tomorrow, Grand Opening for another Pete's Store on Sibley Blvd in Calumet City. Expecting big Crowds tomorrow. See ya there. read more

This is my favorite grocery store ever. 1) Their prices on meat and veggies are easily 1/3 to 1/2 cheaper than any comparable grocery store with no sacrifice on quality or longevity (I'm looking at you Stanley's!) 2) The people who work there are super friendly! 3) They make awesome homemade salsa, chickens and marinated beef among other options that are great for cheap and easy dinners or lunches. I don't really shop here for most packaged goods, since they aren't that cheap overall but I can usually get the fixins' for 5 nights of dinner plus snacks for less than $50 eating something home cooked and swanky each night! read more

Pete's saved my daughter's graduation party! I don't live in Chicago anymore. But most of my huge family still lives on the South Side. My daughter just graduated college, and we had the party planned for last Saturday. Long story short......my phone died while at the Cubs game on Friday. Woke up downtown on Saturday to a message that the place I had planned to cater from couldn't do it (nice....but that's for another review). I called Pete's. Becky in Customer Service couldn't have been more accommodating. This place is incredible - I really wish we had a Pete's in So Cal! Picked up all the food (even had fresh baked rolls right out of the oven). I had a lot of family asking where I catered from. I told them the story (and found out the place I was originally going to cater from has gone DOWNHILL in quality - so everything happens for a reason). All I can say is the food was INCREDIBLE. Mostaccioli with marinara sauce, sausage and peppers, Italian sliced beef, broasted chicken - amazing! I'm fairly certain Pete's has won my family's catering needs. At least I hope so!! Their prices are a little higher for other stuff BUT their prices in the fresh meat/fish and produce prices are great. Their prepared food is also FANTASTIC along with their salad and soup bar......AWESOME!!! Their liquor department carries EVERYTHING.....and it's so awesome they finally got a liquor department, that was all that was missing before. I live in Whiting and have Strack and Wal-Mart as my options to shop - they are much closer than Pete's is yet Pete's is where I go because they blow the other places away. YAY PETE'S!! read more

As someone who likes to get a good value for their money, Pete's definitely fits the bill. With a Jewel-Osco, Strack and Van Til (local chain), and Super Walmart nearby, one does have choices on where to shop, but Pete's can definitely save you money. They do have an extensive produce, meat, and bakery section as others have referenced and their prices are decent. You do have to watch their sale prices, especially when the produce is super cheap as sometimes its at or over the peak of ripeness and may go bad on you faster then you expect. Their prepared food area is also very good (and a wide variety) as I like to buy their tamales or their rotisserie chicken every once in awhile. All in all, its not bad. In addition, they also have a number of imported/ethnic items...if one is in the mood for imported beets or pickles from Poland, Kinder from Germany, or even Burek from Croatia/Serbia, chances are you will find it at this location. Also you can watch the sales on their packaged items as sometimes they have great deals on those items too. read more

I've never been in a cleaner more organized grocery store. Wow.

This place has changed for the worse in the last few months. When Pete's first opened, it was a godsend. Fresh produce, lots of choices in the Deli and with prepared foods, not usually found on the East Side of Chicago. Then I started to notice that their selection in the Deli became very limited. The wide variety of items, including some from Boars Head, became just a few brands. The salads and other Deli items showed their lack of turning, often looking like they had been there more than a few days. In the bakery, they would leave the muffins and strudels on the shelves for over a week, not restocking them with new items till the old ones sold, or became so stale as to be unsalable. Most bakeries replace their goods on a daily basis, and sell their older goods as day old. Not here. They need to start changing out their baked goods. I do not know why this change for the worse has occurred at this Pete's. I just wish they would get back to what may them so good. Until then, I shop carefully at this place, and have started buying my deli and baked goods elsewhere. If they don't wise up, they will loose a lot of their loyal customers. read more

Produce is cheap which is great, but spoil quickly. Management is okay. They treat the cashiers like they are robots. I seen them talking which is cool. Why would you want to work in an environment where you can't talk to your coworkers to pass up time when you're not dealing with anyone. But one of the managers said "No talking. It's unprofessional." And told them to look ahead or clean their register. I get it's a job but jeeeez let them socialize. No one is ever in the liquor section and my wife and I always get stuck with someone who can't ring up the liquor. And it's not their fault so I understand. Also the night shift needs someone to help bag for them. Some people don't like to bag their own food and it slows down the line making the cashier ring up the food and also bag the groceries. I witness it happening once and the cashier was told to work faster cause the line was getting long. Mind you, only 2 registers were open and no one was helping the cashier bag. Please hire someone to bag. It would definitely make everything efficient and more fast paced! Thank you! read more
