He said the job would take 5 hours and he would have to break the wall in my dining room to run the line which would cost $1350 plus an initial $175 consultation fee and said 1/2 the funds were due upfront so I paid him $700. Upon consultation, he noted there was an electrical box already sitting 2ft from the outlet and said if I can run a line from this box to the outlet I will only charge $175 consultation fee since there's not much work involved. He returned with a worker and was able to connect to the box next to the outlet, it took him a little over an hour to TRACE the line from the basement to the box, without have to break walls and run a hard line from the basement. He then charged me $905 and ended up requesting an I became upset. This is not what he promise. I asked him for a breakdown of what he's charging for, he said he charges for a minimum of 2.5 hours plus he needed an extra man (which he also charged for) for the job so the work was shared and both of them had to be paid and he's charging for materials?!?? There were no materials involved except that he relaxed the sockets. I did not pay him the extra $205 because to run a simple electrical line from a nearby box to an outlet does not cost $700! DO NOT pay the contractors any monies upfront. If they are legit and have a business, they should have the funds to cover the job and collect after the work is finished.

I contacted Tri Starr Electric, because I wanted a second opinion on my non-functional outdoor lamp post. Neil picked up the phone and spent 10 minutes listening to my problem and what the first electrician found out and proposed. Any contractor able to take a phone call for 10 minutes is incredible in and of itself. Neil asked some good questions and didn't want me to pay for a service call unnecessarily. While Neil confirmed some of the first electrician's findings, there were additional matters that the first electrician did not address. I decided that it was worth paying them the service charge to have them thoroughly examine the situation. This was because the proposed solution from the first electrician was almost $1500 after tax, and I wasn't sure I wanted to spend that much to deal with the lamp post. (low voltage with transformer installed outside in an external outlet) Brad and Juan came over to examine the situation. They wore shoe covers to enter the house and not get the floor unnecessarily dirty! They did similar examinations as the first electrician, testing line voltages and finding where the wires went. However, unlike the first electrician, Brad offered multiple solutions at different budget levels. Brad focused on the root problem of "how much outdoor lighting do you want?" instead of "how to fix this lamp post." Lastly, if we hired them to perform one of their solutions, Tri Starr was willing to discount the price of the solution by the cost of the service call, which I think is fair and appreciated. Brad submitted three proposals a full day later, all of which matched what he told us when he was on-site. The three proposals came in at different price ranges: an affordable solution that abandons the lamp post for a different lighting source, a modest low-voltage wireless switch solution, and the priciest line voltage solution. The price point of the line voltage solution was basically the same as the first electrician's low voltage solution, so Tri Starr offered a better solution for the same price. We chose the low voltage solution. Brad texted me when he was arriving and arrived in the expected time window. Once here, he reviewed the work with me before starting. He suggested 3 options on where to place the transformer box and wiring with pros and cons to each. As before, he wore shoe covers for indoor work. For outdoor work, he carefully dug up the ground to lay the wire and minimized disturbing the soil. It took him about 5 hours to do the work, which was according to plan. After the work was done, he cleaned up the work site and provided a final review of the work including operation of the switches and the transformer box. In conclusion, this business is very well run, offers great solutions for all budgets, and is meticulous with their work. I will definitely hire them for future electrical work.

Not pleasant news. Then I decided to give a call to Tri Starr. Neil picked up and he didn't listen as much as I had wanted him to, and he quickly indicated that the handyman is probably wrong. I was a bit skeptical to be honest, but I gave it a go. Joey showed up on the same day as the call and he was actually really pleasant to talk to and resolved my problem relatively quickly. I didn't have to do a rewire so that was a relief. and in the end, Neil was right. They were prompt, knowledgeable and generally friendly. Give them a call

The issue is they made the mistake and left it. It's a great place for mice to nest... I had to do a sad diy patch up job (I'm a social worker I know nothing about patching up a wall!) they should have own up to it and fixed it. There was no time to call them back since the dishwasher was being installed today. The story of how long it would take changed.... It ended up being a 20 min job instead of 3 hours originally quoted. The price was steep about 300 more than what I researched online. It was our decision to proceed with the quoted price. My dishwasher is installed so I'm not sorry. It just left a nasty taste in my mouth; knowing if you don't watch people like a hawk they'll leave stuff like square holes in your walls! They never admitted it and just left it. I would raise hell if it wasn't for the fact we plan to renovate the whole kitchen in a few years... and my sad diy is good enough since nobody will ever see it since it's on the side of the dishwasher.
