I've been coming to this location versus the Valpo store or the Petco in Portage because they have several aisles dedicated to cat food/items versus the entire store being dog oriented and cats given a few shelves out of obligation like at those other places. They tend to always have the food brands I need in stock. I would also like to make a shout out to Anna, who is often working the register when I am visiting. I have seen her with a line ten people long, seen customers being incredibly rude to her and yet she always maintains he composure and is always smiling through it all. Not an easy task with how people can be, and she should be recognized for always making my experience at the store pleasant. This is the Petsmart grooming on US 30 in Merrillville Indiana. I took my dogs to go get them groomed when the groomer by the name of Ashley, and the manager, Natalie, neither one of them did a good job on my dogs. I ended up taking my dogs to get them groomed last month not realizing that when I took them home there was still feces stuck to the fur of my dog. I was wondering why, it only took Ashley two hours to do my dog. His anal glands were not expressed, they didn't do their nails or anything. Then the prices went up -because of the weekend they will charge you an extra five dollars. Which will bring the total close to $130 for two small dogs. The manager claims that my dog was being aggressive. when in reality my dog has never had a problem with a groomer. These people do not take care of dogs they're over priced and there's no accountability. DONT GO THERE!!! read more

I have a border collie and lab mix, Grace, who we take here regularly to get groomed. Yesterday we had an appointment scheduled with Tiffney at 12:30. We get her cut short everywhere and leave her tail and ears fluffy. She told me that it would be about 2 hours and she would be done. (Not very friendly and unwelcoming). We arrive back at the store at 3:00 to see if she's done (being that it's been 2.5 hours and still no call). We open the doors to grooming and she proceeds to glare at us and not say a word. I politely just ask the status of Grace and she says it'll be another 20-30 mins. We leave the store and come back at 3:45 (it has been almost 3.5 hours at this point). We enter grooming and they tell us to go pay for it at the front registers and they would get her ready. This was also inconvenient because I would have liked to see the job they did so I can tip. So we pay and proceed back to grooming and they bring Grace out. They hadn't even touched her ears so we asked if she could trim them up a little bit. Tiffney looked up and rolled her eyes at us as the other lady dragged Grace back there. She then proceeds to sloppily just cut almost ALL of the hair off of her ears while aggressively grabbing her snout and treating her very poorly. We decided to just walk out after this being that it was just getting worse. She looks AWFUL! Her whole body is blotchy, they did not blend her tail head or ears, and it looks like she has side burns. Gracie came home from this appointment dying for water, and completely stressed out. I don't know what went on behind closed doors, but for her to treat my dog the way she did IN FRONT of me, I can't even imagine how she was treated when I wasn't there. We will NEVER be back here. read more

so basically Petsmart in merrillville just basically told me my cat can starve Simba is on a prescription food because he has urinary crystals. Yes, when purchasing the food you need to provide a prescription which I totally understand. Petsmart has Simbas script on file through their Vet, Banfield. I guess Banfield closed, so I couldn't get his script but I have a picture of his script. I showed him the photo which clearly has Simbas name, AGE, What he's prescribed, when it expires. I hate to say this because the corporation spends so much trying to convince us it really cares about animals. I was shopping on their website and noticed how many 'treats' and foods they carry for pets containing sugars (fructose,glucose etc are all sugar). There is an epidemic of expensive to treat diabetes, overweight and tooth decay in pets these days and animals should never have sugars. If you see anything described as soft chew it's because there are sugars in it making it soft. I have to assume that Petsmart just doesn't give a darn about your pets health or your pocketbook because they don't have to sell these dangerous edibles except they apparently care more about money than the phoney baloney story of caring about animals. And if you ever buy these sugar laden pet foods because your pet likes them (he has been hooked on them like drugs) wait till you see a thousand dollar bill for teeth care. read more

I made a appoint last weekend to get my husky groomed, the day of I get a call the person called off and they need to reschedule. So I do that. I have a appointment made for today. I get a call at 9:30 a hour before I'm suppose to have my dog there. They need to cancel again due to the fact she groomer needs to go to the emergency room. She has signs of Covid. Understandable also. But I'm sure you weren't feeling well yesterday Dana. So why did you risk scheduling my dog for a appointment after he's already had 1 cancellation? As a first time customer this is absolutely ludicrous. I'm not sure if Petco set standards to how many pets they have to groom a week , or if she was feeling sick and still going to work the following day and risk spreading something to my dog and possibly me. I have taken our dogs here for years. Unfortunately the last trip wasn't the greatest. It's already hit our miss with the groomers, but the last one left me aghast. The dog's hind end was cut to her skin, she was also nicked in the neck, the tail (even after "fixing") was too long. The head was not trimmed and looks terrible, and the legs ( after being "fixed") look silly. When I picked her up and asked if they could fix her, I was told that my dog didn't behave. (Although the report card said she was an angel and they couldn't wait to see her again and to be sure to ask for the same groomer.. which is it?) This is the first time in her history of being cut there that this was reported to us. Ironically, this was also the first time she was butchered. When I brought our dog home, my husband asked if they used a dull razor on her because of the razor marks in her fur and the uneven hair. He said the hair was probably being pulled out. I would also like to say that even if I'm not thrilled with the cut, I have never asked for it to be fixed. I just thank them and move on. This cut was really just that bad. I feel horrible for this dog. We can't even fix it. It's cold. She's shaking and doesn't want to go outside and we have to wait 5 weeks for it to grow out to even consider fixing it. My advice is to be very careful in bringing your pet to this particular store. Otherwise, you will waste $73 + $10 tip (why did I tip?). So disappointed. (I did post pics) read more

I would say the groomer wasn't very friendly. When we dropped them off, she didn't say anything to us. She just came and got "the white dog". I'm not 100% sure if her name was Michelle. I brought my labradoodle and sheepadoodle in to get full grooms. They looked good when I picked them up but realized they had MANY cuts on them once I got home. My sheepadoodle was groomed by Jayce. He looks very good but He has razor burns and cuts around his anus and legs. I actually had to take him to the vet to make sure there wasn't an infection near his rectum area. He's been licking it at non stop. Come to find out, he has a huge scratch on the inside of his tail and a cut on his actual anus. I had to spend more money to get a cone and medication to apply. My labradoodle Izzy had her ears plucked/cleaned during her groom but has scratches all over on the inside. She's been shaking her head constantly and and rubbing her ears against her bed. She also has a cut on her left front paw that has to be bandaged. I understand that dogs aren't always easy to groom but this is inexcusable. I've brought my labradoodle here before and had no issues but this time has made me realize, I never want to bring my babies back for grooming. read more

About the ball pythons While they looked in good health, theres a couple problems I had.. 1) Containment I wanna say it was a 10inch by 10inch wall enclosure The baby inside could probably line up against 3 to 3 1/2 sides of the walls. Immediately you can probably guess why thats an issue- Its WAY too small Especially for 2) They're supposed to be housed alone There were 2 ball pythons in the SAME time enclosure DESPITE there being a second, EMPTY, enclosure they could have put the second one in. 3) Containment 2.0 Due to how small the enclosure is, there is no room for the heat balance a ball python needs Due to the heatlamp so close to the snakes, it could risk overheating or maybe even burning Im fairly certain. The half log hide was 2, 3 inches away from being in contact with the lamp One snake was in the hide, the other on top. Which mind you AGAIN; YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO HOUSE 2 BALL PYTHONS IN THE SAME ENCLOSURE!! And another thing due to the size problem Ball pythons need a temperature gradient One warm side, one cool side. With how it was set up it was constantly just heating and heating the snakes. Im very disappointed honestly. I get w Covid, stuffs not going great, but thats no excuse for poorly housing animals, especially a reptile like a ball python. read more

I used to bring my dog here every 4-5 weeks for a "sanitary trim". He's in a wheelchair and keeping his fur short helps keep him clean and dry. But the last time I brought him in the staff said they wouldn't treat him due to a new policy stating that they won't touch dogs that can't stand on their own. He walked in on his own with the chair, but of course he can't stand without it! He's otherwise healthy, happy, and had never been a problem at grooming sessions (I could understand if he got banned for biting etc). They called a manager over who said they were asking us to leave "for the well being of the dog". Sir, if you were concerned about his well being you would authorize the sanitary trim he needs to stay clean and dry. We won't be back to this store. read more

My family adopted a 13 weeks old chocolate lab that we named Harley Davidson. We enrolled Harley in the Pet Smart puppy school; but, the first week was postponed by the trainer, Harvey, due to inclement weather. So, our first training class was when our puppy was 14 weeks old. Harley is truly a puppy: excited by everything, loving and playful. And, teething. Harvey seemed frustrated by Harley from the beginning. In fact, he commented, in front of the class, that we should have enrolled Harley earlier. Both my husband and I said - simultaneously - that "we just got him". We tried the class for three weeks and things just got worse. Finally, in the third week, Harvey used some kind of dog repellant (pepper spray) on Harley, which, we found out, was against Pet Smart policy. We reported the issue and were advised that Harvey was very popular. Nothing was done. Pet Smart said that the cameras in the store don't really work so they couldn't confirm what actions were taken. "So sorry." They refunded our money and have been sending us copious amounts of coupons for our trouble. Did I mention that my family is black and the other families in the program were white. This store has an awful training program and Harvey the trainer is horrible. He has no patience and uses harmful tactics - Pet Smart will say they don't condone the bad practices but will not do anything to prevent them either. You're risking your dog's mental health enrolling in a Pet Smart training program. read more

Took my beautiful Pomeranian there yesterday to be groomed by a blonde girl named brittani with a nose piercing, told her I wanted my dog trimmed and went to pick her up and this girl completely shaved my dogs entire body!!!!! I love this store! It is my second home now that we rescued a puppy from their adoption group. The entire staff is extremely knowledgeable and friendly and I can get my puppy food, nails grinded, and even visit the vet on the same trip. What makes this place 5 stars, though, is their dog trainers! Both trainers Laurie and Andrea are very professional, knowledgeable, and always go above and beyond in class and even to find products I need. I was struggling with all kinds of puppy issues (haven't had a puppy in years) and their support and expertise has taken a huge weight off my shoulders.
