    Best dog ever... 2004-2017
    Kimmie R.

*sigh* I met my dog there in 2004, and my cat there in 2009, and I am very grateful that I adopted them from a no kill shelter providing more room for a dog in need. Unfortunately, the most amazing dog I've ever had passed away after a long healthy life of 13 1/2 years. My whole soul hurts, but I'm glad we met. I will never forget the day I strolled into the humane society being completely unaware of what I was getting into but being committed to having a pet. If you are completely committed to the mission of raising and caring for a pet throughout their life please consider the humane society of Munster.

    Adoption is where it's at!

We adopted our second kitty from the Humane Society in Munster in October 2010. Let me be perfectly frank with you; that crazy cat lady? That could be me. I feed a number of "outdoor loveys" (much to the chagrin of our neighbors) and have a permanent soft spot in my heart for adopting special needs animals. My other kitty, a super chatty Oriental Short Hair, was adopted from a breeder and in need of a friend to...well..."talk" to. ;) I was hugely impressed with the Munster Humane Society. The facility was super clean and the staff caring and knowledgeable. This Humane Society is home to a number of cats--not just kittens--and often offers discounts for adopting an older kitty or sibling set. In any case, we walked around for awhile and met the kitties before eventually coming upon a kitty who completely stole our hearts. Paperwork filled out, short interview conducted, and we anxiously awaited the news as to whether or not we would be accepted as future adoptive parents. A week later we received the call and raced to liberate our newest kitty compatriot. The Humane Society of Munster is an excellent organization where all animal residents (there are a number of guinea pigs, hamsters, ferrets, etc available for adoption if that is your thing) are treated with love and compassion. If you are ever in the situation to adopt, you should make your way to the Humane Society of Munster.

Am I home? Yes, you are at your forever home!

Looking for a pit mix. They got it. They are over packed with animals that need a forever home. They really do CARE for their animals. One of the dogs did find a forever home with us!

Robin (He was about 2 weeks old when we adopted him)

    Schererville Animal Control & Shelter

Background check, application…read moreprocessed, only $60.00 they both were microchip, vaccinated, spayed and neutered, ventinary check up to deem the health. The past 3 months have been fun. Midnight, is female, sits on the top of the living room chair watching out the window. Friendly, lovable, meows for me to pet her; such a stress reliever. Leo, the male, is shy. He will spend most of his time downstairs. The cats are quiet, clean, low-maintenance for the life I live. The animal control personal were very professional. The animals were shown care. I appreciated the genuine attitude the building and staff showed. If interested in a pet give a sheltered animal a chance because animals adopted from shelters typically cost less than ones purchased or even acquired for free--once you add in the cost of vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery, microchip, dewormer, and other "tide bits" included in your adoption fee, you'll probably be surprised what a bargain it is to have chosen an adopted pet. Most shelters and rescue groups conduct thorough behavioral analyses of each pet to get a better ideal that they will be the right piece for your family. Schererville Animal Control did this and told me if anything happens to please bring the pets back. I can not recommend to adopt a shelter animal anymore than buying from a pet store etc. Most pets end up homeless through no fault of their own--"moving" and "landlord issues" are the top reasons people give for relinquishing their pets, please check out your local shelter. It was definitely 100% worth it for my children and I.

Angela scheduled his vet/surgery appointment and we got him over there right after the weekend. Especially around customer service, the amount of time it takes to adopt a pet and if the pet was still adoptable once we got through the process. Well, we DIDN'T have ANY of the bad experiences others reported. The customer service upon entry from START to FINISH was OUTSTANDING. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the front desk with excellent customer service. The 'cat' coordinator who took us to the cat section was VERY knowledgeable about the cats and spent an incredible amount of time with us. We didn't feel rushed at all. P.A.W.S followed through with everything they said they would do. The whole process from seeing our little Whisper to picking her up and taking her to her new home was six days (and that's because two of the days we weren't available). The process went very smoothly. They answered our questions in person and returned our phone calls and emails timely. They are very concerned about their pets and the homes their animals are placed in. We feel really honored to house one of the pets from their facility. Thank you P.A.W.S for everything you do for animals!

We were also told there was no guarantee the dog would still be there. We followed up and called every day and got no information. We were also lied to by the people handling the application. This is the WORST animal hospital I have ever been to!!…read moreFirst of all, roughly 4 1/2 years ago, I had a cat that was seen by them. They charged me over $700 for bloodwork & told me that my cat was diabetic. I got a 2nd opinion from a vet who specialized in cats. This vet took ONE LOOK at my cat & said, "Your cat has cancer." I was FLOORED! The bloodwork (that was a hell of a lot cheaper than $700!) confirmed it. Ever since then, I NEVER went back to Munster Animal for vet visits. Fast-forward to this week, I need to board my cats, & the usual places I board either stopped boarding or are booked. So, I call Muster to ask if they board & they say yes, but the vet needs to see your cats for a wellness check prior. I figured that's fine, both cats have recently seen their regular vet...they are fine. I do a walk-in & I'm already annoyed with them from the start! The girl is having an EXTREMELY hard time checking in 2 cats at the same time. They seem VERY disorganized. The vet came in like a wrecking ball--trying to scruff my cats, catastrophizing every little thing about my cats, insisting on multiple bloodwork & x-rays, giving them all kinds of shots that I had to ask, "What are you giving my cats??", jabbing his thumb in my cats' hipbone to "demonstrate" there might be something wrong...only for the x-ray to show nothing (obviously). And to add insult to injury, this "pre-board wellness check" came out to OVER ONE THOUSAND ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS!!! Due immediately! With 3% interest if paid with a card! WTF!?!? The next day, the vet called with the bloodwork, telling me that my cat has...you guessed it...DIABETES. AND that my cat is at risk of spontaneously bleeding out & MUST be seen back for treatment IMMEDIATELY! After that dramatic phone call, I immediately booked a vet appointment with my regular vet. They called Muster for the records, talked to the Munster vet, checked her out, and took additional bloodwork. Turns out my cat is fine. fat, but fine. On the day of boarding, I schlepped my cats to Munster to board for the weekend, only to (at the last second) ask me about this deadly bleed-out scenario the doctor conjured up. I explain that my vet was talking to their vet about it & I had my vet take the bloodwork because I feel more comfortable if my regular vet sees my cats about serious matters like this. They then began telling me how they can't board my cats because the doctor wanted to see the cat back due to the seriousness of the matter & he won't be back until Monday. I told them, just call my vet now & get the results & they argued with me that I "should have brought in the results myself." WOW! The male nurse (murse) started to cut me off, raise his voice, argue with me, & then storm off!! DOUBLE WOW!! I ended it by telling them (1) If this was a deal-breaker to board my cats, why didn't they call my vet for the results? (2) Why is the Munster vet adamant about a follow-up when I took my cat to her regular vet...does he not trust my vet? Or is this another CASH GRAB?!? (3) If you guys "care so much" about animals here, you'd understand my concerns regarding my LAST cat dying of cancer when your vet misdiagnosed him with DIABETES! And finally - being rude, dismissive, combative, condescending, and sarcastic to customers in a failed attempt to deflect from your own incompetence & ineptitude is not a good look for any of you or your "walk-ins welcome" hospital. I recommend the Hobart Animal Clinic as an alternative. Your pets might even live longer.

She sets expectations up front, which is a good thing too, and is very communicative (although she can't always be by her phone to respond quite asap, which I appreciate bc she's giving the dogs attention).
