There is an easy pathway that offers stunning views of the Rogue River and four overlook points for capturing great photos. Find the Rogue Gorge Day-Use Area and parking lot on the west side of OR 62, just north of Union Creek Resort. It is a quick, easy stop, well worth your time.

First, this was kind of an add on stop after grabbing a bite to eat just around the corner. First thing we did was explore the path. I should add that the path is relatively flat and easy to navigate for anyone that has a hard time with hikes. This is a paved path and is pretty flat from one end to the other. There are a few spots you can go down steps for a closer vantage point, but the most steps you will encounter is about 10 at any one point. Great shots of the Rogue can be captured all along the pathway as you walk to the upper point of the viewing area. Just guessing, but round trip I'd say that the total walk distance is approx. 1/2 mile. Now to go into details as to why only three stars. I can't go without saying, the bathrooms here are absolutely disgusting. My gf turned and walked away after the initial door opening/smell that escaped when the door was opened. For this reason alone I had to deduct 1 - 2 stars. If you are just here for the views and don't use the restroom facilities then I'd highly recommend. Really cool all in all minus the bathroom experience.

This is one of those little places every local should experience- and if you're just passing…read morethrough it's right off the I-5- it's a little walk that would be good for stretching your legs- letting your dog out etc- and it's really interesting to see the train tunnel through the mountain up close- I love all the old buildings they are covered with graffiti but that somehow makes them look even more awesome against the forest backdrop- they are really amazing to check out- great short hiking trail with an interesting ending and lots of historical significance- just beautiful- a must see and a great experience *sidenote- rumored to be haunted because as the site of the last "great" train robbery in the west- 4 were killed- it was also rumored that the dynamite the robbers used to open the safe also burnt up the cash so started their curse

In A Nutshell: -It's…read morenot too often you can actually walk down to a dam & watch real fish inside the water like an aquarium. -You can do that at Winchester Dam and Fish Ladder, which is a National Historic Landmark in our great country the USA. -You can easily find parking in the small lot, then walk down the concrete/mental stairs towards the dam. -There are plenty of places to take some really nice photos of the entire dam & Umpqua River. -As you walk down the steps towards the fish count area, you will be able to see real fish struggling against the strong currents through glass. -You can see all sorts of fish if you wait a little. Overall, this is a nice place to take your family.

The visitor center relocated to the original site of the Tulelake Segregation Center at 44340 Hwy…read more139 in the town of Newell. Initially we went to the old address at the fairgrounds 7 miles away in Tulelake. But once we figured it out we went to the new visitor center. The ranger said it's been two years since they relocated. All the original barracks comprised of the Japanese internment camp are gone with the exception of the concrete jailhouse. The ranger said the barracks were sold and repurposed by the townsfolk of Newell. Still it's a somber reminder of the social injustice to the Japanese American people. While we were there we saw a ranger led tour which includes a tour of the jail. I had attempted to book a tour but couldn't figure out the logistics. My bad. You can get a National Park stamp for your passbook here. Otherwise you can get the stamp at Lava Beds National Monument.

Crossing the Oregon-California border was one of those simple moments that made our road trip even…read moremore memorable. The last town you pass through is Ashland, then you climb up to the summit, and as you start coming back down boom there's the Oregon/California border sign. There's a nice, spacious parking area where it's easy to pull over. We popped the trunk on the car, toasted a couple of bagels with cream cheese, brewed a fresh pot of coffee, and shot a fun little video together. It turned into one of those unexpected moments that ended up being a highlight of the trip. If you're traveling up or down the West Coast, I definitely recommend stopping here. It's a great place to stretch your legs, grab a photo with the state sign, and make a memory. Five stars!

Driving south from Oregon into California on I-5, I think I heard my wallet cry as I crossed the…read moreborder. Yes, fuel is more expensive in the Golden State than it is in the Beaver State. So fill up if you can before you cross over. There is not a good place to stop here. It looked too dangerous to me. There is an Agricultural Checkpoint in Hornbrook. This lovely arched bridge carries Depot Street across the Rogue River. It was built in 2006 and has…read moretwo spans with the largest being 306 feet. It replaces the original steel-truss bridge that had been here since 1950. One interesting fact is that the new bridge was built alongside the old one and when the old structure was demolished, this one was moved sideways into place at the same location It has one lane in each direction with a center lane and a pedestrian/bike lane. There is no toll to cross the bridge and on the side opposite from the Interstate highway next to Highway 99, there is a park with a boat launch and some benches. Toketee Falls is just an okay looking waterfall. Granted I have become a little spoiled witnessing…read moreall the beautiful waterfalls located throughout Oregon. But...Toketee Falls isn't exactly accessible for visitors. You can see it by casually walking half a mile through an old growth forest to a viewpoint lookout deck from high above. And then if you're using your phone for pictures and recordings, you must zoom in to get good closeups. Toketee Falls is a double decker waterfall. The top tier falls measures 40 feet high and the lower falls is 80 feet in length. From the observation lookout, the upper falls are barely visible. And when at the vista point, maybe you need 5 - 10 minutes in total to observe the falls before returning back on the pathway to the trailhead and parking lot. But, not to fret...in this area of Southwest Oregon, there are more things to see and do. The north entrance to Crater Lake is just 29 miles away. 3 miles down the road is a much more fulfilling waterfall experience...and that's Watson Falls. At Watson Falls, you take another short path (half a mile too) to reach the base and within steps of a jaw dropping 293 foot waterfall. Views at Watson Falls are unprecedented, in a good way, lol. They sure beat anything that Toketee Falls offers. Also, just down the road (4 miles from here at Toketee Falls) is Umpqua Hot Springs. Unfortunately in early September 2024, recent wildfires in the area had closed down the entrance to Umpqua Hot Springs, which was a letdown. Extra notes about Toketee Falls... - Right next to the parking lot is a 12 foot pipeline tube that's part of the Toketee Hydroelectric Project. I'm not exactly sure if that then means Toketee Falls is a natural wonder or partly manmade? - According to the trailhead sign, to reach the overlook platform, you must climb 97 steps up and 125 steps down along the way. They rate the trail as "more difficult", but I highly disagree with this. It's easy for everyone of all ages. - There is a bench to sit down on at the lookout deck but it's sort of pointless because the fence protecting visitors is chest high which forces you to stand while seeing Toketee Falls. It's tough to get pictures of yourself at the viewpoint since the falls are far away in the distance. I was even taking a selfie which is always a last resort option for me. Finally, Toketee Falls is a quick visit. I was hoping for better, especially coming from stunning Watson Falls down the road. But, in the context of the sights and surroundings in this part of Southwestern Oregon, it doesn't take much effort to reach the Toketee Falls viewpoint and you can pair it with Crater Lake, Umpqua Hot Springs and Watson Falls making for quality explorations in the grand scheme of it all.

The hike to the fall was not bad until the end where boardwalk & staircase took over and led to an amazing overlook of the falls where you felt you were just suspended in the air. Fairly crowded but an amazing fall to see, plenty of parking and a neat historical wooden water pipe to check out at the parking lot. Very glad I made time to check this out!
