I first met Ben Brown 7 years ago through my work and was impressed with the level of professionalism and respect with which he conducted himself. At the time I wasn't looking for a place to train (even though I can't deny a life long obsession with martial arts). A year or so after that I enrolled my daughter and I in a school based solely on what I would consider an immature concept of "styles." I had the good fortune of running into Ben again a few years later, during an inter school event and was again impressed by him and the skills that his students brought to the table. As the school I trained at went out of business I found myself with no place to train and in a bit of a depression as I saw a second training facility of mine become unavailable for personal conviction reasons. After taking over two years off I ran into some of Ben's students. These were some of the same people I had met over four years previously and they were still enthusiastic members of Phas 3! That's when my wife decided I needed to go talk to Ben (I think she was getting a little tired of my obsessing about martial arts). I started my training at Phas 3 in November of 2012 and can say that I feel like I have found the perfect school. My only regret is that I didn't take Ben up on his offer years before to come down and check out his school. If I had, my ground game would be light years ahead of where it is now, and I think it is safe to say my martial arts experience would have been a much more positive one. My 12 year old daughter, my 9 year old son and I are now all insanely happy to be a part of Phas 3. As an adult I feel challenged and supported by not only Sensei Ben but also by his outstanding staff. The two instructors I have the most experience with, Sensei and Kurt have an awesome way of really making me want to learn more and at the same time I feel valued as a student. As a parent, I am blown away by the kids program. Teacher Josh has a real gift with the kids and it is always great to see what Teachers Alex, Christie, and Jeremy have in store for my kids. Phas3 has been one of the best decisions I have made. My biggest regret is not joining sooner. As the other reviews go, hands down one of the most welcoming places to be as the room is full of respectful teachers and students. I walked in with no experience, never knew how to throw a proper punch or kick. Being completely new I was timid initially but thru the entire process I found more confidence due to the attentive instructors and environment that Sensei Brown has created from his top fighters all the way down to the beginners. If you plan to compete in Muay Thai the techniques taught and fighters at Phas3 are top notch. If you plan to learn how to properly defend yourself Phas3 will show you how to correctly do so and it is not a sugar coated scenario against a stagnant punching bag. If you are looking to get into shape or try something new, you will not be disappointed. Now to talk about Sensei Ben Brown. Sensei Ben is a phenomenal teacher and surrounded himself with the best people for the job. He created his gym environment, as you can read in the other reviews there is no ego, his gym is full of respect and discipline. One of the biggest things I respect about him is he does not care who you are or where you come from, what youre capable of, or what kind of shape youre in. He will welcome you into the Phas3 family with open arms and help you work towards your goals. His story speaks for itself and is why he is such an amazing teacher and leader on and off the mats. Thru training at Phas3 ive noticed no matter youre skill level or experience Sensei Brown and the other instructors will show every person the same amount of attention no matter how many people are in the room they work harder to make sure everyone is being safe, exercising correct technique and explaining the reasons for their technique and teachings backing them with experience and real knowledge. Not only will you continually progress and get better but they care about every individual in the room and enforce their knowledge to make you better. OK - this is probably going to sound like a paid announcement, but I swear it isn't. I am just so grateful for what I have found at North Bay Martial Arts that I want to share.... I started attending NBMA back in March of 2010, just trying to lose a few pounds. But what I got was so much more! Not only did I lose those stubborn pounds (and then some), but my body started to tighten up and I now have definition and muscle tone like I've never had before. I am 32 and my body is as good, if not better, as when I was a teenager. I'm back in a size 4/6 and loving it! The physical change is great, and exceeded my expectations, but I never expected the confidence boost that I got - or the friendships I have made. NBMA has a family feeling that is really hard to find. I was hooked after just one class. The workout was amazing and everyone was so nice and supportive I couldn't believe it. Not only is the staff kind and helpful, but everyone attending the classes is, too. It reminds me of the unique feeling you get from being part of a team. And let me tell you, there's nothing like taking out your frustrations on a punching bag! NBMA has something for everyone: whether you're male or female, young or "mature", in great shape or just starting out. I first called NBMA November of 2007. I spoke with a cheerful English girl, who was so encouraging and upbeat about me trying out the Cardio Kickboxing class. I had real doubts about my ability. I hadn't worked out in years, I had two kids and really let myself go. I hung up the phone and thought to myself...I don't think I can do this, but this English girl on the phone thinks I can....... So I let a month pass, and finally, discussed with myself after my annual Christmas pig -out I showed up December 27th. The cheerful English girl was there, and she actually remembered me. I was pleasantly surprised. I also met the owner Sensi Ben Brown. He was also very courteous and asked about my experience. I was upfront about my lack of anything over the past couple of years, but he was encouraging me to try and just hang in there. So I tried and I tried....I was out of shape, discouraged, uncoordinated, slow, and just plain out of shape. For some reason at the end of my pathetic show Ben and Christine ( Cheerful English girl) were quite pleased with me. So I showed up again and again. This school is unlike any other I have been too. It is hard to put it in words the experience that one can have at this school but I have never been into a school and had all the students and workers come and introduce themselves to me. It is an extremely friendly school with no ego, however they work hard and fight hard. There are kids classes in the afternoon at 315 and 4pm. They have a great After school kids program too that my nephew goes to, they pick the kids up from school in the "Sensei Express" take them to the school where they are given snack, homework help and a martial arts class! The adults program starts at 5 every day and the last class ends at 8. They have classes for all levels from absolute beginners to seasoned fighters and opportunities for them all to train together in a safe but challenging environment! The recently added some women only kick-boxing classes that a friend of mine is taken and is really enjoying. Also the kick logic classes (cardio kickboxing) a class designed to prepare their fighters is the best workout I have ever had in my life...and extremely addicting!! Basically this school rocks, I have never felt so at home and had a good a work out as I have at North Bay Martial Arts, I have been there for 4 months now and am loving every second- bring on the next 4 years! So many great things to say about this place I really don't know where to start. First thing is that when you are there you always feel welcomed and like your part of the family. Everybody there is very nice and friendly. Ben Brown is a great Sensei and a truly amazing person. And the training is awesome! This place offers just about everything you look for when it comes to training martial arts, it really has something for everybody. Whether you want to be an elite fighter and compete, just train martial arts and have fun, or get in great shape this place has it all. They have Muay Thai kickboxing classes, no-gi grappling, and a fitness class. I have been training here for about 2 years and I love it. I do the kickboxing and grappling classes. Another thing I really like about this place is the old school tradition martial arts vibe, the bowing before and after class is a really important part of the training. I feel like it relaxes your mind and really puts you in a great mood. Every time I leave I feel a million times better than when I walked in. What an amazing organization. If you're looking for a highly organized, clean, friendly environment to train and learn the art of Muay Thai and learn ways to overcome life's challenges then look no further. My 9 year old son has been going here for months and absolutely loves it! He has had some insecurities that he was struggling with and ever since he started going to PHAS3 those insecurities have diminished and his self confidence has skyrocketed. This self confidence has helped him in school and sports. He just had a record setting soccer season with 36 goals and made the @Players Choice" game where he scored the 2 winning goals! I'm in my mid 40's. I've been in martial arts for about half my life. I now have 2 young kids that I wanted to get into martial arts of some kind. I wanted them to learn for the discipline,confidence and respect it teaches. Also for the self defense, but that is lower on the list. I also wanted to get back into something after about a 15 year break myself. We heard about this Muay Tai place and went to check it out. Right away we felt at home and at ease. Both my young kids (4 and 7) who usually are shy, liked coach Brown right away. After a quick introductory class, we loved it. The kids are thriving, and I'm getting back into it slowly too, my wife even goes when she can. All the instructors I have had and all the students of all ages are awesome. Phas3 is legit. I have been training combat sports since childhood and have been in gyms throughout the Bay Area my whole life. The second I walked into Phas3 I knew it was the right gym. Almost every week, I learn a new tool or technique from not only the amazing coaches, but through watching the talented fighters that train here. Drills are practical and applicable and are explained in a way that both the advanced and beginner students can easily grasp and apply. But, it's the culture that really sets Phas3 apart. Everyone is always extremely friendly and here to get better together. That sentiment is felt in every session and holds incredible value. Classes are super accessible and the schedule is accommodating to busy schedules. I found NBMA after reading an article in the Bohemian. Their Sensei Ben stated that everyone deserves a chance to be at the table, so to speak. So, since I am an older, overweight woman I thought I would take a chance and see if there was a place for me at their table. My first time there I was overwhelmed with support, friendliness and a sense of inclusiveness. My second time there I again was overwhelmed with support, friendliness and inclusiveness. You can see where this is going...I have been going now for 6 weeks and I absolutely love it. The teachers adapt exercises for me when I can't get down on the floor, my kickboxing mates are patient with me and the encouragement I hear is incredibly uplifting. My family has been involved with this dojo for 7 years and absolutely love it! This place is more than a martial arts facility, it's truely an extended family. My daughter has been taking classes from Sensei Brown and his skillful staff since she was 5 years old and I began taking fit classes last year and can't get enough of it. Two children and five years later North Bay Martial Arts has changed my body, mind and, spirit. I was looking to get back into shape after my first child. I began taking the Kick Logic class with some other moms. My weekly attendance soon became twice a week and even three times when possible. I felt myself gain strength, energy and qucikly dropped the baby weight replaced by lean muscle. The variety of weekly classes offer something for everyone, from those looking to train in MMA style fighting to a mom who wants a rewarding workout in a friendly environment. I've been training at PHAS3 since June 2024, and honestly, I'm addicted. The instructors are friendly and skilled--I always leave class satisfied with the quality of training I received. Muay Thai not only is a great way to get in shape, but can also teach a lot about discipline and focus--its a form of therapy that allows me to release my fire while also controlling it. The community here is amazing; everyone motivates each other, making it feel like a family. They offer classes throughout the week, morning and evening, which makes it convenient for a busy schedule. Since I've been here, they have offered jiu-jitsu, yoga, and special guest training sessions. Not a bad gym to be training at. Highly recommend it. Wish I had discovered it way sooner. read more

This place is awesome. I had no prior martial arts experience when I started coming to Phas3 so I was quite nervous on what to expect. But the environment in this gym is extremely welcoming, with coaches and fellow students being very helpful and encouraging. I was almost too nervous to get out of my car my first day of class, but now I try to come to as many classes as possible. Coach Ben, Riley, and the rest of the instructors really know their stuff, making it much easier to learn drills, proper gym etiquette, and Muay Thai in general. Phas3 has a great atmosphere, making you leave exhausted and ecstatic at the same time. This has to be one of the best schools in Northern California. That's a bold statement, but I truly believe that. Sensei Ben Brown and his talented staff offer a wide range of styles from kickboxing, grappling and realistic street defense to intense cardio kick boxing workouts. My particular area of interest is kick boxing. I have found their kickboxing techniques to be powerful and straight forward. I don't feel like I'm getting bogged down with overly complicated moves that ultimately prove to be less effective. My conditioning and overall strength have substantially improved. At 49, I feel like I'm in the best shape of my life. Also, I must say that fellow students are friendly and supportive. They are a truly nice group of people. read more

My son has been attending phase 3 for a little over 2 years and my son has completely gained more confidence and has been more respectful. He started before the age of five and he is now 6 years old each time he continues to evolve. Coach Ben and his entire staff are just truly amazing. There isn't a day that my son does not want to attend phase 3. My other son who is almost 5 has shown a lot of interest and can't wait to join. My son continues to use the skills that he learns at Phase3 everywhere he goes. Signed up about a month ago I've never regretted attending a single class. Since day one I can say its everything I could've imagined and more.
