You've heard the saying, "One person's trash is another person's treasure." After refreshing and restyling my living and dining rooms, I found some less-loved items that someone else might enjoy. Knowing I planned another visit to the King of Prussia area, I brought my no longer loved items to the Neighborhood League Shops, a nonprofit in Wayne since 1912. This is my first time consigning. I learned that each drop-off is limited to 15 items, and no books are accepted. The ladies in the shop were very friendly. They explained the consignment process and accepted my two boxes containing less than 15 items. When shopping for preloved items, the quality and value of these older, well-made products are second to none. The Neighborhood League Shops offers an excellent selection of reasonably priced cut glass, crystal, sterling silver, etc.

The main floor has lots of cut glass and fine china pieces, jewelry and some art. A few lamps. Not a large space. Laid out well and clean. I headed to their basement, which had more everyday "home decor" items, some linens, small electrics, etc. I saw many lovely things, though nothing interesting enough to purchase. We then headed over to the Alley Door, which is around the corner. Despite it being almost noon in weekday, and a sign stating they open at 10, the store was dark and locked. Huh? We walk back to where we were and ask about this. They know nothing, they said, just that the cash box had not been collected. That's it. I imagine these stores are run by volunteers, and it's a good cause. I'm not sure I would make a special trip to shop there. When I'm in the area, I'd go again.

Frazer Antiques is more of a cooperative and it is a sleeper because more people should know about it and don't. You walk into their doors and it is floor to ceiling filled nooks and crannies. If you are furnishing your shore house (as I am) or going for the cottage/shabby chic look, this is the place in the 'burbs. The prices at Vintage home are so reasonable. They (the three ladies that own it) buy quality "vintage" stuff - not necessarily antiques, but think stuff from the '40s-'60s, and paint them white. I bought an incredible oversized carved mirror and it was only $200, a good sized antique french style linen press for $400, and a pair of french style bedside tables for $300. All are solid wood and very good quality pieces. For the price, it's not even worth hunting and hunting for decent quality furniture at yard sales, etc and then painting it yourself. These ladies have done all the work for you. Their prices are so low that they don't negotiate - and the stuff flies out of the store. They won't hold anything over the weekend since there is such turnover of their inventory, so if you see something you want, buy it. Have your measurements in hand because if you go home to measure someone else will scoop it up (as I did with the linen press. ;-) ) If you are looking for something in particular, you can give your name and they'll do the hunting for you. They don't take Amex and are closed on Mondays. I'll be back Tuesday for round 3....

Eric Wells is an enterprising young man with Down's Syndrome who decided to open a store where people with different mental abilities can sell their artwork & crafts, along with unique gift items. Eric also sells informational and children's books about including individuals with special needs into our lives. They are located in the Rosemont Farmer's Market, with plenty of free parking. Open Thursday - Sunday. I am seriously excited about this business and am really looking forward to my next visit!
