I found this cool spot while…read morelooking for upcoming music events in the city and had never heard about the Pearlstein Gallery. When I saw it was free, I knew I had to come. I came via public trans - super easy to get to. It's right off the 34th st MFL stop. My friend and I were greeted by two Drexel students working the front desk who were super friendly and asked if we had visited there before. When we said no, they asked how we found out about it and proceeded to tell us more about the Gallery and previous exhibits they've had. Since it's Drexel-affiliated, some previous exhibits had to do with Drexel history, which isn't something I'd be super into, but I'm definitely excited to see what they will show here in the future. As a huge music fan, seeing photographs of some of my favorites (Queen, Elton John, etc.) were super cool. Especially when you think about the fact that technology back then isn't what it is now. I loved that they played a video about Bob Gruen, interviewing him and some of the musicians featured in his photos about his work. They are having an event with the author this week and I am really considering coming back. My favorite part was the bedroom replica with the walls covered in posters, photos, and clippings. Check this exhibit our before it leaves in May! Update - came back for the interview event with Bob himself. Kudos to the Gallery for pulling off this great event and book signing. It really brought his art to life!

We ran over to check it out and it turns out Joe Jack Talcum was doing a small acoustic set in front of 20 people. It's these type of cool events that you only find In West Philly! A-Space has a lot of great things always going on inside it, and it's all community oriented. walk outside on any given night and you might find free books waiting for people to take home (I scored a copy of the 2000 Guiness book of World Records and a biography on Steve Earle!). They usually have all kinds of diverse art hanging on the walls, and potluck meals every Wednesday (the majority of the food being veggies too). aside from the rare show you'll also usually come across film screening, poetry reading, special dinners, craft fairs, and so much more. everything about this space is community oriented, and it can usually use the donations in order to help keep it going. so Most events are usually $5-10 and really worth it.

Dr. Thomas Evans of Philadelphia was one of the world's foremost dentists and the dentist to Emperor Napoleon III and his wife Empress Eugenie. In fact it was his carriage that rescued Empress Eugenie after the revolt following France's devastating defeat in the Franco-Prussian War and whisked her away from the Paris mobs. (That carriage has finally been brought back to Philadelphia from France and is on view at the Penn Dental School.) This exhibition is a must for anyone interested in the arts and history of the Second Empire. Hey and while you're at the Ross, take the opportunity to visit the next door Furness Fine Arts Library. This is one of North America's most beautiful libraries!

Such a gem right off the Spring Garden stop, I attended a fantastic mixed poetry reading and open mic night back in October. They have two levels and there's bathrooms at the back and a couple of different ways to set up seats. The stage itself is the perfect size for a DJ setup or smaller show. I look forward to the next time I get to go back and support this eclectic spot - an obvious haven for artists and the entire scene here in Philly. Love what it used to be, and especially love what it is now!…read more If you've attended a Mad Decent Block Party prior to the one that happened at the Piazza this year then you might be well aware of the mausoleum that used to be Diplo's temple of sound. And when he moved on the expand the Mad Decent name to other parts of the US he sold it to a group who aimed to create an incredible DIY forum for art and music. The end result delivers quite well on both fronts. It makes for a good all ages shows. And Since it used to be the studio of an exceptional DJ/Producer who knew more than a thing or two about sound (http://youtu.be/N5_vYkYPP08) it goes without saying that it might get loud. So earplugs may be recommended least you find yourself saying Its All Gone Pete Tong (http://youtu.be/g5K6pIez5P4). When PhilaMOCA isn't showcasing some incredible music its open for some pretty eclectic art viewings. And it works with plenty of collectives that are well versed in combining the 2 scenarios. Their prices are a bit higher than you'd expect online or at a chain bookstore, but I find that very justifiable as all of their profits go towards running the shop and other social justice missions. The volunteers at the store were great as well and were happy to answer questions or direct us to where certain books were.

They also have books on queer studies, feminist literature, Muslim education... the list goes on and on. Do you understand what anarchy is? At any rate I seriously doubt the black and brown employees who have or do currently work or volunteer at Wooden Shoe would appreciate being called racist, so why don't you, you know, fuck off and shop somewhere else? That being said. Wooden Shoe is an exceptional resource for books on any number of topics. They tend to skew toward literature on social justice issues that run the gamut, so you're not going to find the latest pop culture biography or new fiction. Books are full price, so expect to pay $35 for a new hardcover, but they also have a ton of $1-5 second hand books, plus a really cool section of free and cheap zines and small print publications. I've been shopping here for it seems like a decade, and as a queer, gender non-conforming biracial person, the idea that they are racist is comical bordering on fully ignorant.

There have been plans for an office/mixed use tower in the parking lot that faces this mural but for now, we have the opportunity to take it in entirely. Wow, there's some detail here and a story.
