First appt evaluated and diagnosed. Second appt a few weeks later installed new compressor (which is a bear of a job - definitely not to be left in the hands of inexperienced technicians). This place was recommended by a neighbor. When I called 2 weeks ago, I was quoted an estimate of $500 less and Phil's was unable to honor that original quote. My appointment was meant to be for 2/9 and Phil's failed to contact me to let me that there would be a delay in repair. The most concerning part of all was the lack of COVID-19 protocols. Store owners were not wearing masks yesterday or today and did not require customers to wear masks either. I will not be back and do not recommend. read more

I can't say enough good things about Phil's Foreign Auto and Bruce. They have worked on 3 of my cars. A 2011 Jetta TDI wagon, a 1967 Alfa Romeo, and a 1956 tricky British sports car (that's all I'll say about that). He fixed the muffler on the Alfa and worked some magic that kept the Alfa sound, even though we couldn't find the exact muffler for the car. He fixed the carburetor on the aging British beast and helped me with a mysterious problem on my TDI. His prices are extraordinarily fair, he always tells me exactly what's going on with the cars, and he clearly cares about cars. I'm a customer for life. read more

I have tried to use Phil's Foreign Auto on several occasions, and I am done with Bruce (the owner) for good. I'm sure they do perfectly acceptable work, but Bruce is passive-aggressive and they have a heckuva time keeping to their ETAs for you having your car done - and I mean sometimes it's days. I am a perfectly reasonable guy about things like this, but customer service is apparently very low on this place's priority list. Do yourself a favor and patronize one of the several other local foreign car mechanics who actually want and appreciate your business. read more

Bruce has now helped me twice on two old vehicles. With each vehicle, the job was done right and there were no hidden costs - the final price was the same as the quote. Additionally, he went above and beyond when he helped me with a dead battery after the shop was closed. It seems clear that Bruce is an expert in his field, but I'm recommending him based on his honesty and helpfulness more than anything. I've visited many garages in the Portland area and I've felt cheated on more than one occasion. Phil is the nicest guy and happy to explain everything, and very patient. I know little to nothing about cars. He treated me with the upmost respect, and did everything he could to save me money. I was really hoping to be able to use Phils to service my BMW- its a great location for me and when I called to see if I could drop my car off, they said they'd look at it and get me an estimate the next day. More than a week later and still not even an estimate as promised. When I stopped in to get an update, I was told he was doing me a favor by squeezing me in. How about doing me a real favor and just saying up front you don't have time, thereby not wasting over a week of my time? Also, on 2 occasions I called in to check on the car and both times spent 10+ minutes on hold before someone could take my call. Sadly, I will not be using this conveniently located local business. I feel very comfortable taking my Volkswagen here. Repairs are always done in a timely fashion and the owner will take the time to talk and explain to you what is going on. They also set priority for repairs and will help you in an emergency (even if it is checking engine codes or removing pebbles stuck in your wheel that make horrendous squeaking noises!).
