Let me tell you, I have been to so many mechanics over the course of my life as a used car owner, and I leave disappointed and ripped off 99% of the time. This business was different from beginning to end. The owner is a great guy and makes you feel comfortable and heard. Really awesome customer service, very upfront, and very fair pricing. I really appreciated the quick turnaround time, and the honest opinion on what was going on with my car. My partner and I had a flat tire when we pulled into Portland for vacation. We had a hard time getting an appointment within 4 hours at other places, so we walked to a coffee shop to camp out and saw this place across the street. They were able to fit us in within the hour and gave us recommendations on what to do until then. Turns out there was nothing visibly wrong with the tire, no holes or anything, so they couldn't do anything on the spot. They didn't charge for the inspection and filling up the tire. We very much appreciated their help and are glad to know we can wait until we get back to deal with the tire instead of worry all weekend. Merlin motors has always treated me right. After years of taking my car to another shop (one on Riverside, beware) I finally feel my vehicles are being properly cared for. Some repairs that had been 'done' elsewhere were corrected by the Merlin crew, and my cars have been running fine since. When buying a new car, I talked with the guys about the options first, and they helped me feel much more comfortable with my decision, even if I wasn't buying from them! I almost hate to do this, but these guys saved my skin a few years back, and now I travel from OWLS HEAD, Maine - 2 hours north whenever my BMW needs anything of significance done. They charge 1/2 or even less what others do, are honest as the day is long, and are just great. My car had broken down on the freeway and as I hysterically googled where to have my car repaired, a friend told me about Merlin Motors. I can't say enough good things about Merlin Motors! The owner, Natik, has always been so accommodating with me. He has great customer service and knows how to please his customers. I trust him because he has not let me down when fixing my car. When I first brought my car there my fuel pump had gone and I had no choice the car was dead. I thought it was pretty expensive so I double checked by calling Volkswagen in seeing how much a fuel pump cost. Natic actually charged me less than they did. I was won over from then on. Just left Merlin Motors and it was the fastest and most affordable car experience I've had, and I've been to many places. I walked in without setting up an appointment and they said it would take about 30 min to change my headlight bulb. It only took 15 minutes, maybe less, and was SO affordable. I was thrilled to find this place. While in Portland on vacation I popped in to inquire about a used car I saw listed on their website. I spoke to Maria, who was incredibly upfront, and honest about everything and even included some of her own recommendations after hearing what I was looking for. Ultimately these guys are straightforward about what you're getting. I was not able to buy a car from them as the one I was interested in was in-process of being sold, but I wish I had. I live a couple blocks away from Merlin Motors and when I still had my Volkswagen Passat (which constantly gave me problems - do not buy a car in Lewiston, people and you may already know that) I took my car to Natik every couple of months, when it gave me trouble. Not once did he charge me for bringing it by to get looked at, when he could not find the problem / or there wasn't an apparent problem with the car. I had my oil changed there many times and it always ended up being cheaper than the big guys (Meineke, and others), as they never tried to up-sell me anything with an oil change, like many others are trained to do at chain locations. Natik opens at 8am and closes at 7pm and my working schedule is 10-6 so if I ever need to drop off my car I typically take it in at 8am and either pick it up after work or have my boyfriend pick it up in the middle of the day, as they almost never keep a car for more than a day. If he needs to order a part for you and keep your car longer, Natik or the woman in his office will let you know. They might not tell everyone this, but I just know from small talk with them, they really prefer not to keep a car for more than a day, since their car lot is so small and they need the extra space for cars that are actually for sale. This is especially true in the winter, due to the snow. I've never had an issue with them calling me back to tell me what the problem is or if my car is ready for pick up. Also, almost every time I had work done on my car by Natik ( maybe 3-4 times ) the final cost was at least 10-15% lower than what he quoted originally. I'm not sure if this is the case for everyone, obviously everyone's car and experience is different, but he definitely charges a fair price and offers speedy service. If he can't find anything wrong with your car - he will not charge you for looking at it. This was amazing because my '02 Passat really had some trouble before I just traded it in, in Dec. 2013. My boyfriend takes both his Jeep and Jetta sedan to Natik on the regular and we've never had any trouble with them - only good service and competitive prices. My girlfriend's parents got me a gift certificate to detail my car through Merlin Motors. Merlin Motors subcontracted that out through Portland's best car wash or something like that. The man who was supposed to detail my car was not big on details and after a number of miscommunications, he offered to refund me the gift certificate, fine. I tried contacting him a couple times to do this and eventually spoke to the people at Merlin Motors. Once I got ahold of them, everything went much smoother. They were very professional, assured me I'd get my money back, and promised to write me a check themselves if the subcontractor didn't send me the check. A few days later I got a check from Merlin Motors for the full amount of the car wash. While dealing with the subcontractor who they were previously working with was a headache, the people at Merlin Motors were great and as soon as they got wind of what was going on worked quickly to make it right. Terrible. Van returned with numerous small dents all over the body. Inexperienced and bull-headed: Attempted to fix a problem only to make it much worse and rendered the van dangerous to drive. Would not respond to queries so took the van to another shop where the lads chuckled and said the guy there is untrustworthy and known for doing poor-quality work. If only I had known ffs! read more
