Last March I went in for a Maine State Inspection and was told I needed my steering rack replaced and a rear enforcement bumper. He was quoting $2,500+ for the steering rack and $553+ for the bumper reinforcement. I took my car to three other reputable shops in the Portland area. I was quoted $337 for the bumper reinforcement with OEM part, and the repair man even told my father and I that we could replace it ourselves because my father was able to remove the bumper cover himself. The other shops I went to told me I only needed my inner tie rod replaced including a wheel alignment. I got this repair done for $220 dollars and my car drives great. It is a 2013 Honda CRV with 70,000 miles that has never had issues on the road. The one difference between going to Carter's and going to the other repair shops is that I went ALONE (without my father) to Carter's a as young woman. I remember when I dropped my keys off at Carter's and the man at the desk called me "sweety." Unprofessional and patronizing. Carters is deceitful, greedy, and untrustworthy. If I could give 1 star I would. Carters has declined drastically over the years. I've brought several vehicles in over the years and each time more shady than the last. Brought our vehicle in recently, where they attempted to charge us for an estimate we didn't request or agree to, was quoted an astronomical number for repairs we did not want. When called out and asked to speak to the mechanic was told no and hung up on by John. Predatory experience for women, completely different experience between my fiance going in and me calling after they were flat out pushing her towards repairs she didn't want and lying about her vehicle. Terrible service, way over priced, these people know nothing about cars. As a college student, they charged me $600 for an oxygen sensor and insisted that there was nothing else wrong with it. 20 minutes after I took it off the lot, the check engine light came back on and the car went back to the way it was before I gave it to them. They insisted that I let them monitor the sensor, but I wasn't about to be charged another $400 for that crap, so now my car is just chilling as is. read more

I guess I expected a little more... I recently bought a used 2010 Nissan Murano which I knew on purchase needed front end suspension work -- alignment, tires, and struts (due to a "knock" which transferred to the steering wheel) and whatever else? Money is not an issue. We (Carters and I) agreed to all of the above, and HERE'S the deal. Car drives much better, steering tracks nice BUT the knock is still there.... I dropped $1900.00 and change for the struts and tires.... I'm just ASSUMING that while the front end is dissected, the TECH might have taken a look at the other components (control arms, tie rods, etc.) and maybe have given them a shake or two (or just GENERAL knowledge) to see if there was any other components that might be in need of replacing? The fact that I go over a small bump in the road at 5MPH, or at 65mph and feel a transfer to the steering wheel bugs the **** out of me! Here's an analogy. I've been a luthier for 30+ years. When someone brings me an instrument to repair for a specific problem, I ALWAYS check for other problems that might be affecting the instrument. Sometimes I will find another issue which I share with the customer while I've got the "patient" on the bench and dissected. I wish this had been the case with Carter's. I don't blame the folks at the top, but since the Murano is still knocking around in the front end, I feel as though the work was not as good as they are perhaps capable of. Could not believe the level of service ! Move in 2019 to the area and am sooo thankful to have found this company. Every person I have spoken to and dealt with have been respectful, honest and very knowledgeable. Being female and having work done on my vehicle have always felt like I was being taken advantage of because of my ignorance when it comes to vehicle repairs and maintenance. I DID NOT feel that way this time...I truly trust everything that was required to be done NEEDED to be done and will definitely will be a lifetime customer. Sons vehicle was not starting at college. Called Carters and we towed the vehicle there. The starter was replaced within a day after confirming the problem. Son picked it up after paying over the phone. Reasonable price, polite, fast and saved my son unneeded stress during finals week. A week after Carter's service my car to ensure it was winter ready a tire center informed me today that a routine oil check by their facility found that no oil showed on the dip stick. When I called Carter's to voice my concern that the oil hadn't been checked during the pre-winter servicing the owner, Doug, became very defensive and hung up on me. He has a total lack of customer service skills. Because of his attitude I'm left wondering if other things were omitted in the service his technician provided. Great local business with great service! I got sick of wasting time and money at VIP and Sullivan Tire, so I took a chance on Carters a few years ago. They've never let me down. They have their busy days, but they manage to get me in, especially if it's an emergency. The staff if friendly and they tell me if pricey work is necessary or can be put off a little while. I went to Carter's to get my brake lines fixed since they were leaking. They called me up and said that they found a few other things wrong which I did appreciate. They told me that I need a new exhaust system, which wasn't true. I only needed a new tailpipe, since a hole a rusted into it after the muffler. Whole muffler system would have been somewhere between $400-$600, while bending a new tailpipe cost about $150. I picked up my jeep and had to return it the next day, the new brake lines they put in were leaking. I was not pleased with the service or the price. If everything had worked when i drove away and if they had offered to do just the tailpipe versus the whole exhaust system then this review would have been better. read more

I needed some brake work, a sticker, general checkup on my vehicle. Called to see about making an appointment, and was told to bring it on in right now (which I foolishly assumed meant they weren't busy). Left my vehicle there at 11: 15am and was told I'd be called once they'd looked. Went across the street to Sebago to wait. 2 hours later, I finally went back over and was given a list of problems, including 2 warning lights that weren't on when I brought it in. I explained that the lights weren't on to my knowledge, asked for the keys, went to my vehicle and the lights STILL weren't on. Then I was told that they needed to do diagnostic work to figure out a leak and that they'd work up the estimate, "between other stuff" and let me know. I waited until 2:30pm, then finally went back and said I needed my vehicle and was charged $65 with NO ESTIMATE and NO REPAIRS DONE!!!! I will not return. WHO CHARGES FOR AN ESTIMATE WITHOUT EVEN DOING THE DIAGNOSTICS?!?!? read more

Bought new tires at over $750 last year for my wifes SUV. Had Carter's do the alignmnent Within a couple days of putting them on. A few months later my wife complains about the truck pulling and making a noise. I have a different shop look at it thinking it was brakes, he calls me and says all but one of the bolts on the front end are loose. One nut he took off with his fingers, so I'd say never tioghtened from the alignment and tire wear was more than should be. I take it to Carters and they do another alignment for free. I should have put up more of a stink because the damage was done on the tires after a few months of driving the truck with the front end floating around. Fast forward 4 months and 4700 miles. I go to rotate the tires and the insides of both front tires are bald, one about ready to show cords, alignment cannot be right. I go to carter's and he talks about pot holes and Maine roads. I dont buy it. Says it couls be out of alignment from hitting something. It you hit something and mess up alignment something is bent or broke and the steering wheel should be crooked. He said he could align it again and I told him to not bother, i'll take it somewhere else. Now I ruined a set of tires in 14,000 miles in less than a year from THIER poor alignments. This is the second time I've had a problem. A few years ago I got an inspection sticker there and the next day a tie rod fell off my truck at 45 mph. Thank god I did not have my kids in the truck. I'm done with these guys. We pay alot for service and we expect it done right as our loved ones safety is on the line. Never again. Roger Charest read more
