HORRIBLE SERVICE! After reviewing their website, I called to inquire. They would not provide any info or answer any questions but requested I email them. Their email back did not answer all my questions. Their email created more questions and their pricing on the emailed quote was different than what was advertised on their website. I called to follow up and they without receiving my questions told me that the website was not up to date and that I would need to eat any cost difference. (A large difference in cost) In the middle of a question, they hung up on me. I emailed the owner and requested a call back. She never called me but immediately sent me an email that she would not serve us for our memorial. Their contracts are very shady too. BEWARE!!! read more

I'm very disappointed with how this catering company handled our agreement. We had mutually confirmed June 27th as my event date, and were in the process of finalizing the menu. I even sent a follow-up email asking for clarification on the options. At no point was I told that another client was inquiring about the same date, nor was I given a chance to secure it with a deposit. Without any notice, they gave the date to someone else. This was not a case of me being unresponsive--we had a clear understanding that the date was mine while we finalized details. The lack of communication and professional courtesy was unacceptable. I would caution others to be very clear and get everything in writing early when dealing with this company. read more

I hired Philyaws to cater my mom's memorial. I live in another state and it was a little difficult finding someone local to the area but Philyaws was recommended to me by someone local that I know. The communication was great. I was a little surprised that they didn't take credit cards though. I had to send a physical paper copy of the signed agreement and checks thru the mail. But that all worked out. I ordered food for 100 people and they showed up and set it up and it was ready to go when we needed it. The food was very good. There was only one problem - the food was cold. I emailed the owner following the event, to let her know as a courtesy that the food had been cold and it was her response that is causing me to remove two stars from this review. I simply thought as a business owner that she would like to know that the food had been served cold but she questioned how long it had been sitting on my plate before I ate it. Common sense tells you if a plate sits, it gets cold. In this case, multiple people including myself had the experience of making a plate, sitting down to eat it and it was already cold. I wasn't looking for a refund or anything like that. Just giving feedback which I would not have posted publicly if I had simply had an apology or even an acknowledgement that this is not how they generally like to do business. read more

I had Philyaw's at the Light of Liberty celebration at Day Island Park in Springfield. I was super excited to try the food just on scent alone. The food truck has automated flippy screens which display a menu, then a picture of the food, then back to a menu, which is a cool concept, but got frustrating when I was trying to decide what to eat. There wasn't a line, so I felt comfortable taking my time. I could definitely smell the BBQ ribs and I thought I could smell the sweet, fried hush puppies. I decided on a $9 tri-tip sandwich. At $9, I was *expecting* a 6" or more hoagie filled to the brim with thin-sliced, juicy tri-tip beef. What I *got* was a maybe 4" round with about 4-5, 1/8" thick slices of overdone beef. There was a bit of gristle and fat in my sandwich, I assume it was not trimmed before slicing. The beef was chewy and flavorless. I'm 7 months pregnant- I can taste SMELLS from 20 feet away, but I couldn't taste the beef. The bun was fluffy and fantastic, but to be honest there was far more bun than beef. I felt cheated. My husband got the pulled pork sandwich meal for $13, I believe. It came with cole slaw and hush puppies. His was, again, on the yummy 4" round bun, but was piled with pulled pork. The pork itself wasn't particularly juicy or flavorful, but it wasn't dry. The pork tasted (yes, I snitched some!) slow-roasted. It was add-your-own-sauce, which is cool, we could get just the right amount of sauce. Unfortunately the sauce was runny as hell and just a hint of tangy- I myself prefer a thick honey-bbq. The hush puppies were good. Very heavy dough, of course fried. I appreciated the inclusion of honey packets. I've had hush puppies that tasted light, almost like doughnuts. These were very thick, stick-to-your-ribs hush puppies. The cole slaw was definitely different and unexpected. It looked like green and purple cabbage shredded with carrot and dill pickles in a thin dressing. There was just a hint of pepper and sweetness. I loathe dill pickles, but I was impressed with a new and different way to do cole slaw. This is someone else's cole slaw holy grail. Great concept, beautiful cart, I've seen them at a number of events, but I won't be coming back. read more

They came to my school for a college fair the last 3 days and I ordered the Tri-tip sandwich. It cost $9 but they charged me an extra $0.50 because I had to use a card. Then guess what? Here I received a very flavorless "sandwich" that consisted of the following: -Two buns (obviously) that were neither warmed up or toasted, no kinds of sauces or flavorings added to them -*Two* very thin slices of meat that was only barely lukewarm at best. Tasteless and almost half of that was just fat. That was it. No coleslaw even! Waste of my time, as soon as I got the sandwich, I was like, "Wait, that's it? What the hell is this? I want my money back." They wouldn't give me my money back. They said, hey you ordered a tri-tip sandwich, that is what you get. I almost wanted to bust a cap up in that foodcart. Don't order anything from them, their prices for the rest of the menu items were just as ridiculous and don't deserve to get much from them either. If I ever run into them again, I seriously may just go all Dragon Ball Z style on their asses. Ugh I'm so mad. read more

Dino Philyaw is as good of a cook as he was a runningback, and Dino was one heck of a tailback for the Ducks! I attended an event at Autzen Stadium before a Duck game that Philyaw catered, and I don't think I've had a better burger. Maybe I was starving, but I've never scarfed a big burger in under a minute flat before that day, but I knocked that thing back quick like I was in an eating contest. Quality ingredients, Dino could cook for me anytime. Philyaw's BBQ sauce is authentic southern style brought to the northwest. Stumbled on to Philyaw's by accident one night on the internet. Heard the name but couldn't place it. Then after spending the day separating trash at Eugene Celebration I went for a bite and stumbled onto Philyaws again. This time I could see some BBQ going down. Ordered a half rack of ribs and some hush puppies at the counter helps suggestion. He had two types of sauce. I chose the spicier of the two. Ribs were nice. Had a super tasty rub on. Meat was tender. I'm a super fan of Papa's Soul ribs here in Eugene. These were right there if not even a little better. Highly recommend. Fair price. Hush puppies or whatever those little balls were I liked, not enough. Twice as many needed or 2-3 larger balls. read more

They're set up at the street fair on the UofO campus today through Friday. Pulled pork/tri tip sandwiches for $6/$7. They offered "dinner" of the same for $11/$12. Most bbq places that's a reasonable amount of meat....not so with Philyaws. At *most* 2 oz of meat, on a bun, with a side of nasty looking slaw (who puts pickles/relish in coleslaw?) and 4 corn balls. Took the food back & tried to get our money back but he refused. He did offer to put more meat on the sandwich, but if he's not going to offer a reasonable amount of food the first chance, he'll never get another. 2 very big thumbs downs. $23! pissed away on zero food. read more

we contacted philyaws to cater our camp wedding this past summer. dino was fairly good at responding, though communication via email, which works best for me, was a little more of a struggle than phone conversations. we drove all the way down to eugene (5+ hours) for a tasting. the food we were served was clearly microwaved leftovers. he acknowledged that it wasn't the best representation of their offerings. he explained that they were really busy that day and assured us the food would be better on the day of camp. it was pretty disconcerting. on the day of, we had them drop off the food rather than serve it as it was a really casual affair. we ordered enough food for 100 people. we had 85 guests and a really hefty number of them were vegan or vegetarian. before the end of the line reached the table, the meat was gone. we were completely surprised as all of the discussion mentioned their service boxes up leftovers after providing a second helping. there wasn't anything to box up. luckily we had supplemented the catered food with a handful of salads and snacks we made. after the event, i contacted dino about the lack of food. he mentioned that after the drop off they found an additional tray of meat in the car. they apologized profusely and provided a partial refund of our money. it was a nice gesture for an unfortunate mistake that left a lot of people hungry. as for the food, it's pretty good. we chose our menu options to get more bang for our buck- mac and cheese versus a green salad, for instance. and we felt it was a decent showing (minus the shortage of food). dino went out of his way to make a mustard based bbq sauce special for my husband, who loves his carolina style bbq. that was a really nice touch that probably kept this out of a 2 star range. read more

Im not a BBQ expert, I just wanted something that tasted bomb and was going to satisfy the salivating mouths of 160 dance floor ready guests. We had the ribs, chicken, and tri-tip which I ate in about 17 seconds flat, because, I was the groom and we dont have time for eating.... BUT... Since the big day I've had at least a dozen guests come up and tell us that the food was awesome. If you want some killer grub for your wedding, then dino is your guy! Literally the best ever. Dino and Angela were the most accommodating to me, my family, and my guests. People who've had whole pig before and hated it, now have a better opinion of it (to the point of saying "best pig I've ever had") thanks to Dino and his epic talent behind the grill. It also helps that he's super friendly! My wedding was during the Oregon Country Fair, and they arrived ahead of time in anticipation of traffic! It was my first time at the Eugene Celebration in many years. As a "foodie" I love to view all my options before making a final choice. When I saw the eye-catching and clean surroundings of Philyaw's Cookout I knew I found my place. Most BBQ shops in the Northwest are not that good so I was very critical prior to my first bite. Once I dug into the mouth watering ribs I knew I made a great choice. The BBQ sauce, which was homemade, was delicious! I also had a sampling of the brisket which might have been one of the better briskets I've had in a long time. The food was simply fantastic. However, it was not just the food that made my encounter with Philyaw's Cookout enjoyable, it was the entire staff. Come to find out it truly is a family affair. The owner's wife and son worked hard to make sure I had everything i needed. The entire Philyaw crew gave me exceptional food and service. I have had Philyaws BBQ several times and have had a chance to compare to other places around Eugene and around Oregon. To date I have not found a place that could compare to the BBQ down south. Dino pours his soul into the food he put on his Pitts. He hands picks ingredients the makes your taste buds explode with Joy. His ribs are to die for, his tri tips you can eat with your fingers, brisket is fork tender and the pull pork with pieces of the chopped skin is just priceless . If someone wants down south BBQ style cooking, look no more. Hired Philyaw's for my son's wedding reception. We interviewed 4 different BBQ catering businesses here in the Eugene area, and settled on Philyaw's. The initial decision was mostly based on the professional presentation and how organized they were with the proposal. As a BBQ aficionado myself, I was a bit convinced the food would be similar so I was going for the service and organization. I was wrong about the food part, more on that in a minute. The presentation I was given was very detailed, organized, and I was assured that everything would go as planned. My theory was that I needed the company that would not be late, bring what they said, and not need to be managed so we could enjoy the wedding. It went even better than that! The crew showed up ahead of schedule, were set up and ready to serve about 20 minutes before dinner time, and were very friendly and professional. It was crazy organized. Once done, they cleaned up and left, you couldn't even tell they were ever there. Now the food part: We went to our food tasting, and everything we chose was very delicious, and the portion sizes were man sizes, which in my opinion is how BBQ should be. Dino made a couple suggestions to our menu, and we trusted his opinion which was smart. The wedding dinner went off without a hitch. The food was delicious, portions were great, and everyone really really enjoyed themselves. We got so many compliments! Now, Philyaws was a couple bucks more than the other guys, but way worth it. Our first (but will not be the last) experience with Philyaws was at the Oregon State Fair. My husband and I wanted to try several different bbq vendors, so we decided to split the tri-tip plate. They made the hush puppies while we waited, so they had the perfect crust with tender insides. They were delish! My husband is not a coleslaw fan, but was quickly converted by their fresh, crunchy version - no mayonaisey-glop here. The tri-tip was so tender and delicious that after walking around the fair for another hour, I headed back to order the exact same thing again, this time - not sharing with the husband! They remembered exactly what I had ordered and it was just as amazing the second time around. As another reviewer said, their sauces are delicious. I think the greatest thing about them is that they are willing to please anyone and everyone with different tastes alike. I had Philyaw's BBQ at the UO outdoor annual marketplace on 13th ave. today and last year. It's the best BBQ in town. If you get a chance make sure to try the BBQ beef brisket sandwich, you will know what I mean. I going to try his Tri-tip sandwich next time I get the chance. It's all good food at a good price too. The flavor is really a knockout and can contest with any other BBQ shack in Eugene or Springfield. I'm an old guy so I've had my share of cookout, barbecue, you name it, around town. Most places are just OK, some less so. I've had Phiyaws' food at any number of events including Oregon Jamboree, Eugene Celebration and area winerys. What stands out to me is the amazing rich flavor and tenderness Philyaw pulls out of his product, expecially the beef tri-tip. He manages to invoke a perfect walk-around rareness out of a fully cooked item, something I've never been able to do at home. And his flair for spicing is top-notch, both his own dry spices and a bottled barbecue sauce he now sells locally. Portions are generous (especially for food stand/catering cuisine) and the sides are excellent. BTW you gotta try the mac 'n cheese his wife makes -- way above the ordinary. I don't know what cheeses are in there but they are superb. If I were getting married again LOL I'd call on Philyaw to feed the crowd. read more
