I am a tad confused why a public park in a small town would need or want reviews, but I'll hop on…read morethat wagon. Fair disclosure: We live within walking distance of this park, so our review is probably biased. The place is just plain cool. Large structures with almost any type of climbing, sliding, or running doodad you can think of. The build is solid, and it is incredibly well maintained. The surrounding ball fields are just as nice. Fenced in to keep the local canines from stealing your balls, and ample parking for large events like Rugby or Soccer tournaments. This is also where the town has their annual Fireman's Festival put on by the local fire department. The festival has been struggling the last years but they just recently took the time to revise the company providing the rides, and brought back the Fireworks so it is a ton better (a trend we hope they continue). The only thing lacking is access to public bathrooms. Unless there is an event going on, they are locked. I am sure it's for safety reasons, but it sucks if you have a need to lose some weight pretty quickly.... If you are in from out of town visiting family and have younger kids, this place is definitely worth taking a short jaunt to. If you don't live in or aren't visiting CG, I wouldn't say it's worth a dedicated drive unless you are attending an event.

Elvehjem Park is best recognized by the reservable shelter that is built into the side of a hill…read more Long and low, it's kind of weird looking but it does the trick. Bonus points for having an attached restroom. I enjoyed a visit here when the weather was warm and the air moves through the shelter to keep it from getting too stuffy. With the wide open spaces of the field my pasty body appreciated the shade.

But, for beginners, it's much more friendly, as there's less trees to hit, and the holes are generally just easier. For sledding, there's a couple large hills that are great to go down on, but they're a bit torn up, and could use some patching. There's other amenities as well, like a playground, and baseball field. It's overall a decent park!

It's far enough from Cottage Grove Rd to be quiet. I'd call it a quaint park. Unfortunately, there aren't many big trees around to provide shade. The playground set is completely exposed to the sun, as are the benches. Any children and parents visiting this park may find themselves rather uncomfortable on a hot day. I didn't see any water fountains either, which wouldn't help matters. There is a full basketball court, but it doesn't appear to be lined. It also lacks shade so there may be better options unless you're just up for some quick practice. Like most public parks in Madison, no dogs allowed.

We mostly explored the prairie and pond that abut the apartment complex, so I was surprised to find later that there is a playground as well as basketball and tennis courts. The fact that I couldn't see it from one end should give you an idea of the park's size. Definitely a nice amenity to the neighborhood!

North Star Park is a neighborhood park. Don't expect anything fancy - it's mainly just a large,…read moregrassy area in the middle of a subdivision. There is a basketball court and some playground equipment, but the main attraction is just a nice, open area to hang out in. My boyfriend and I ended up there on graduation weekend when we wanted to enjoy some time in the sun but didn't want to brave the Terrace or other over-populated venues. The park was almost totally dead - there was one family by the playground but that's it. It offered a nice and relaxing afternoon where we could play some music and not feel like we were disturbing anyone. Things keeping the park from getting over three stars are that there are no bathroom facilities (so many parks lack them, which is awkward if you're there for any length of time) and it's very exposed - both in that there's no shade and that you're surrounded by houses. I can't knock North Star for what it is, but we'll probably keep an eye out for some more foliage-heavy spots in the future.
