I have had my DSLR for a little over half a year and had only used it outside of automatic mode a few times. Manually controlling aperture, shutter speed and ISO seemed so daunting that I rarely tried it. I had a strong desire to learn more and when I saw the name of this class, I jumped at the chance. Mr. Dunkley has a straight forward and efficient presentation style. There were 100 people or so in the class holding 20-30 different camera models. He managed to give personal attention to all people and make sure every question for every camera was answered and yet, it never felt like there was a pause in the class as he was doing so. . . Very efficient. Add in a bit of humor and knowledge built from years of experience and the 3 hour class seemed to only last half that time. In the end, I learned more about my camera in those three hours than I had in the previous 7 months. In addition to the camera settings, which he explains very well, he gave great advice on which lenses a beginner should and should not use. In the week since I have taken this class, I have taken about 50 pictures that make me say "wow that is a great picture" when in the previous half year, I may have had the same reaction a dozen times. Of course, that was when I just "got lucky" when I was in automatic mode, which I will never use again.

We got a new camera and had a trip planned and wanted to take some quality pictures. I was skeptical, thinking that it would feel like a boring class with a dry lecturer. Well, nothing could be further from the truth. Okello was fun and engaging, he provided practical examples and appropriate metaphors. He had a very tight presentation that had a natural flow. He demystified and clarified many photography concepts and camera functions. I feel that he did a great job at making photography approachable and accessible. great course, great experience.

In the retail part you can buy a small to medium selection of film/digital cameras and supplies, but it's not the place to go for rack after rack of all the latest brands and models. They do have current offerings from a selection of digital brands for which they are dealers, but it's not huge. For film photographers like myself, again, they have a decent selection of film in various formats, but it's not as extensive as you'll find in larger stores. I try to buy my film from them when I can, because their pricing is the same as I can get anywhere and I want to support the small businesses that film photography absolutely depends on. The biggest threat to film photography's survival is the giant online retailers. Beyond the somewhat limited modern digital camera/lens selection, Pro Camera is one of the very few places you can buy expertly serviced film-era equipment or get your own properly serviced. I see on some of the other reviews people are complaining about pricing; well, in this area, you truly do get what you pay for. If you want a cheap film camera, go ahead and eBay it, but if you want a camera that will work properly and perform to factory specification for any length of time, the equipment at Pro Camera is a very smart investment. All the film cameras on their shelves in-store are expertly serviced, tested with very specialized instruments, and film-tested. In most film camera stores, little has been done other than a wipe-down and wind-and-click testing. Rarely does any store do professional testing with dedicated instrumentation; film-testing is pretty much unheard-of. Pro Camera is exceptional in this regard. By the way, the selection on their website is much smaller than in-store. I don't know why; I think it would be smart of them to offer all their gear for online purchase, but that's just me. The team behind the scenes at Pro Camera are world-class at servicing film cameras; it is rapidly becoming harder to find anyone even somewhat competent at this, and that makes it all the more extraordinary that they are playing a long-game and actually investing in expanding the number of technicians they have. I do camera repair myself and, as most camera repair technicians have done, I have sent my own equipment to a variety of others for repair. There's literally no one better than Pro Camera. And this brings me to my next point, the wait to get a camera serviced can be very long. That is a testament to how highly regarded Pro Camera's repair service is, among those who know the industry. So be prepared to pay what it's worth, and wait for it to take the time it's going to take, but getting it done right is worth it.

Chuck's is a used camera store over in Hampton near the Air & Space Museum and has been on my radar for quite a while. I haven't been able to get over to that side of the creek for one reason or another however yesterday I said to myself, "To heck with it, I'm going". Even though it was pouring rain traffic wasn't bad at all and I made it there in about 30-40 minutes from Great Bridge. Parking was easy. There's some limited street parking in the front of the building that Chuck's is located in and behind it is a free public parking garage. Upon walking into the place you'll notice it's jammed full of gear. Chuck's space is tiny however he's using every single bit of it to full optimization. There are two rooms. The front room is mostly used for modern gear which includes mirrorless, DSLRs, some classic range finder cameras, etc. The back room which is also called Chuck's Camera Museum contains older generations of equipment such as first-generation autofocus SLRs, older SLRs, and previous generations of gear dating back to Brownie Box cameras. There's a lot to take in. So much so that I came here to find a single lens and spent over an hour just looking at everything. There's an amazing amount of gear here. Chuck was on the phone with a customer when I arrived so I just started looking at the front displays while I waited for him. There's a huge assortment of modern Canon, Nikon, and Sony kits in the front room. The display cases are full, and even the tops of the cases are loaded with cameras. You can pick up anything on top of the case for personal evaluation, and test the camera, the lens, and the whole works. Once Chuck finished his call I inquired about the lens I wanted, a Minolta 28mm f2.8 for their MD mount series, and he brought me to the back room, which I didn't even realize was there. There were a couple of other customers already back there and Chuck pointed out the case that contained the series of Minolta equipment I was looking for. If you think the front room is impressive wait until you see the back room. It truly is a museum, and also a kind of thrift store, but just for cameras. Also, the back room is a tad bit easier to navigate than the front area. I spent most of my visit there checking out the museum room. It's just a treasure chest of gear for a camera enthusiast. Prices vary however deals can be discovered here. In short order, I found the 28mm Minolta ROKKOR lens I was looking for, and then I started looking at the vintage Canon equipment. I should NOT have started looking at the vintage Canon equipment and honestly, it took a supreme effort on my part to not purchase a vintage Canon SLR camera I found back there. I may still go back and get it one day soon. Eventually, I made my way up front and purchased the lens I selected and Chuck even gave me $10 off the price. I didn't ask or haggle, he just did it. After the purchase, he asked if I needed a bag and I said "Yes" as it was raining. He couldn't find one, so I picked up a leather lens pouch, put the lens in there, handed it to me, and said "Thank you". All in all, fantastic visit. Chuck was super friendly and knowledgeable about the product. He's also pretty jovial. I found the prices fair for what I was looking for. The selection is incredible. You have to see it to believe it. Easy five stars.
