I ask a lot of questions because I still consider myself new, and they give me perfect recommendations every time. I needed some frozen anchovies for my upcoming fishing trip. I called the two Oakland bait shops that are still open (Joe's Tackle Box is permanently closed. I actually went there to check it out. Hopefully, yelp will update that soon). They both had frozen anchovies, but the man at Phu Quy let me know their bag of anchovies was six dollars, which was two dollars cheaper than the other place. I also needed some tackle, so I headed over. The selection of tackle there was good, and the prices were very good. I shouldn't have been surprised since the anchovies were well-priced. As I went to the counter to get the anchovies, I asked the guy behind it if I should get one or two bags. When I let him know that I was going to cut up the anchovies into pieces and not use them whole, he actually said that one bag should work rather than trying to upsell me two. I thought that was pretty cool. I decided to get the second bag anyway. As they say, better to have too much than too little. I asked, and he said his name was Victor. He was really friendly and informative. Even though I was going for Delta catfish, I decided to ask him about largemouth bass for the future. He told me some spots and fishing techniques to use there. I'm glad I found another great local baith shop and a local guide (Victor) to supply and support my fishing needs. read more

Really disappointing. I send my wife and sons to grab 2 dozen Minnows for us to go fishing in the morning. They grab them around 2:30pm this afternoon they go straight home and put them in the bait bucket with the air pump to keep them alive for the trip. I get home at 5pm from work and all but 10 are alive. I used to come to this place back when it was Mikes and never had this problem before. Hopefully you see this and find a way to rectify this for us. read more

I'm not as avid a fisherman as I used to be, but if I were going to buy tackle and bait, this would be the place. Located in Oakland, California, this is the only place I know that has such a selection of live and frozen bait. I come here for the earthworms, and they are always super fresh. The guy provides friendly service with a smile. There's a wide selection of gear, including plastics, tackle, weights, and rods--you name it. Anyone living in the Oakland area should definitely go to this place. Keep places like this open; we need them. Keep the lines tight! read more

I love this place the open early and the service is amazing anytime I ask a question I get an answer. If I want I need to catch Bass then he know what bait I need. They have a large selection of bait and tackle that I need for my day or night, Fishing. I definitely recommend this place. They have been around for a while and now I understand why. read more

Small great bait shop. My worms and minnows are always alive and thriving. Good selection of sport fishing inventory as well as crabbing supplies are always available. Some items are limited. If what you need is not available, the owner has no problem getting things stocked back in a timely manner if mentioned. The place is convenient and good for the weekly fishers who stop by often such as myself. Opening is usually at 7am weekdays and 6am weekends. Closing is after 6 mostly. Plenty of street parking. The shop excepts: cash, card, Apple Pay and credit. FYI, fishing advice is always a topic of subject here, to which the owner is always eagerly willing to share. I like that a lot. read more

My husband and I have recently got back into fishing so we decided to come here for bait. We have been trying to catch our own bait down on the docks but unfortunately our casting net skills just are not quite there yet! So this bait shop really came in handy! The worker that morning sorry I didn't get his name was able to quickly help my husband decide what we should get. He was knowledgeable about the products and what type of fish we would catch with each bait. We needed up choosing anchovies and in the end we didn't catch anything lol well nothing to write home about. We will definitely be back for more bait in our future conquests of fishing! read more

Vic is the man! Super friendly dude is knowledgeable. Has a good variety of everything for most Bay Area fisherman. His prices are pretty decent compared to local bait shops I have been in the past like in the delta and up north. A few times he's let me slide with like free small stuff. This place should have much more reviews because the owner is really cool. The store has EVERYTHING you need to go fishing. Fish from shore or on boat, he has it all! I pick up some weights and hooks to take my son fishing for a few hours. He gave us some of his left over worms for free. Other places would surely charged me. Been coming here since the beginning. Came in and got 3 containers of nightcrawlers at $3 each. My wife always winds up saying I should just save my money and just buy fish.... obviously not the point. Shop is bright and clean (for a bait shop) well stocked. The bait lasted quite a while with no quality issues. Will be back. read more

Phu Quy is my one of my go-to spots for fishing bait and tackle in the Bay Area. It's a small shop, but it's got basically nearly everything you need to catch if you're fishing in the Bay. I've bought everything from bait thread to a hoop landing net to weights and hooks to pile worms here. The prices are super reasonable (often cheaper than other places I've seen) and the owner provides a friendly atmosphere -- never any pressure to buy anything and the quality of the live bait is great. One of the few things that this store might not have is live anchovies--but that's true as far as I know for all of the bait and tackle shops in the East Bay; you must go into SF to get live anchovies. They do have minnows and different types of shrimp (grass/mud/ghost) here, but usually I resort to just the frozen anchovies instead if I'm needing anchovy bait. I'll continue to come here for my fishing needs! read more

Victor's shop is essentially the heart of Oakland's fishing community. It's a source of pride for me when I can swing by to check in, pick up some bait, and find a specialty item like wire, crimps, or K-hooks when I need them (he keeps it well stocked). Hook selection is fantastic. Bait is always fresh and lively. Victor's a really friendly guy, happy to share info on any topic (just ask!), and very supportive of fishing programs we offer through the parks. It's great to see him and the rest of the crew do such important work. It's hard to run a place like this (when does he get to fish?!), and I hope he can keep it up for a long time. Small inventory. Very very relevant to what locals need for local land based and small boat fishing. Don't expect any more. Best thing in East Bay. The best bait shop in east bay for sure. Basically all you would need for bait and tackle. Love the fact that they have grass shrimp, pile worm and blood worms. Jumbo blood is a must. This place is my new go to place for my fishing needs they pretty much have everything u need for fishing around the bay.. I've had 3 high end rods repaired here with no issue at all.. They told me they don't do the repairs but they out source the repairs.. At great price and 1week wait time....nice work, prices fair.. Good quality baits live or frozen.. And not like Castro valleys bait shop where they flat out steal your gear that needs "repair".. These guys are honest... The owner I believe the same guy I always see dosnt really talk much unless spoken to but he's cool.... Highly recommend this place! read more

I don't want to give this place 5's I really want to say 4 because it might make some think its bs. But this store has saved me each time another bait store has failed me. What I mean is that late invite to fishing with who ever you go with. Every last minute fishing experience I had and called this store they either had it or its coming in 30 mins. By the time I've showed up I ask for live bait or whatever I came in for they say " Oh you just called?" Yup I did and I walk out at that last minute when everyone said there out they had it. Phu Quy is my go-to spot for live bait! They have a ton of selections for live bait and frozen bait. They also have a liquor store next door if you want to grab some ice! Phu Quy also carries different tackle and fishing gear so this is the place to go. I like to go here whenever I'm finishing in the delta or in Crockett! The guy at the counter is friendly and helpful. If I'm ever looking for pointers or advice, he's pretty knowledgeable. I definitely recommend this place to get your live bait! They quickly changed out his reel and gave him pointers on where to fish. Here's where the story gets better: That afternoon my grandson tried to cast and his line became a complete tangle. We went back to West Marine and were helped once again by Thai. He proceeded to very patiently untangle and restring the line. Her speaker system sounds brand new and you can hear her very clearly when she gives us instructions. I cannot say enough about Melynda and her crew! Every single one of us had such a perfect day! On the boat were new anglers! We all limited out on stripers, and we caught a lot of halibut! I can't wait to go on her boat again! And her dog nova was a bonus, the kids loved her! Bravo Captain Melynda!

I'd no idea of how much there's to learn! I highly recommend this class! If you're a novice, by the end of the class you'll be much more experienced. I went hiking at the Reinhardt Regional Redwood Park for the first time and loved it!…read more Plenty of street parking at the Redwood Bowl lot and we had no issues with vehicle break ins, luckily, although there were a few warning signs up to remind you to put your valuables away. There are bathrooms by the Redwood Bowl but we couldn't find any helpful maps so just used our phones to navigate. The trail we ended up taking was around 4 miles and took 2 hours. Most of it was shaded and among redwood trees so I really enjoyed that this could work as an afternoon hike. It's a moderate difficulty level with some steep areas. There's also a popular picnic area with grills and an archery range. You could even walk to the nearby swimming pool or visit the Chabot. We only did one half of the hiking loop so will be back to check out the other side.

What the what?? 0_o So, that's on me, kids. My bad. Onto the review... A giant ±1,833-acre redwood forest nestled in the Oakland Hills, this park was a former logging site back in the 1800s. Fortunately, there has been a nice resurgence of redwoods to replace those that were cut down. It ain't old-growth, but we'll take what we can these days. The Good: * Free at certain times of year and at certain entrances (more below) * Mountain biking on certain trails (check map and trail signage) * Horseback riding on certain trails (check map and trail signage) * Camping available (check website for info and reservations) * Reservable and non-reservable picnic tables (check map & website) * Restrooms available in parking lots, as well as at some campsites * Nearly forty miles of trails with something for everyone * If you're looking for a moderate ±4.5-mile loop, go to the Skyline entrance and take the Serpentine Prairie Trail to Dunn Trail to Golden Spike Trail, then back to Dunn Trail The Meh: * $5/vehicle entrance fee on weekends and major holidays between April and October, only at the Redwood Gate entrance * Most of the trails are pretty decent, but some are in rough shape due to water damage The Ugly: * One of the few parks I've seen with "off-leash" sections for dogs--which is fine, except you know there's a good majority of dog owners who think they can control their dogs but really can't. We saw a panicked guy chasing his dog down a trail at one point, and who knows when--if ever--he caught up to it. ¯_(ツ)_/¯ Conclusion: Great park with tons of trails and lots to see and do.

Front desk staff was friendly and I was able to sign up for a 10 visit pass for $51, otherwise it's $6 a visit. I figured this will hopefully keep me consistent for the beginning of the year. The facility itself could use an upgrade but overall it is wat you would expect from an older building. The entrance into the pool is through the locker area which has lockers, changing area with benches, showers, and bathrooms. The pool looks fairly clean on the surface and we'll maintained. There are lanes divided into slow, fast, and medium speeds for circle swimming. Much of the demographics is 50+ during the time I went and they were all spaced out fairly evenly. The pool is actually open earlier for swim club members ($55/month) which is nice for early birds and the crowd seems younger at that time. I was told it's open to the public to sign up for that as well. The water itself was a good temperature. The pool goes from 3 ft to 9 ft. The bottom of the pool was clean on the 3 feet side, but had debris on the floor in the 9ft side. Folks would swim for about 30 minutes - 1 hour and more folks would flow into the lanes. Everyone is respectful and the regulars would chat with one another at the walls. There are kickboards and other supplies you can borrow from in a shed if you'd like. There is a lifeguard on duty. I asked her for the time, but she didn't know it, which I thought was odd because I could hear her talking on the phone or talking aloud. I asked another swimmer for the time and he said there's a clock right behind me, which I didn't see, and I'm surprised the lifeguard couldn't just tell me there was a clock to check. Apart from that, I enjoyed my one hour swim and got a reality check on how out of shape I am. I'll definitely come back to continue swimming and work my way up to the fast lane. The view was awesome and the sun was shining just like Bob Marley said. There were people, young and old playing in the sand, lots of bike riders, and of course, those dog walkers. The Teen put the phone down and ventured out and some sand, touching and driftwood drifting.. Definitely, we will be back when it gets warmer with hopes of finding front row parking again!

I'm really happy with Victor and his bait shop. The bait is always in good shape and in stock. Nice looking filter system for the shrimp. He always shows you that the bait is good. If you know the bait shop in San Jose(no names). The lady looked into the container of bloodworms, gave them to me, I paid and left. The worms were dead. Argh.
