That sunset view from the free train ride :)
    Ren N.

Why can't all airports be this cool? Ridiculously easy and free sky tram! It's like riding the tram to Disney World, except you're going to the airport with all your luggages! The view on the way to terminal 4 and 3 is spectacular, great for intagramming the planes and the runways The place is organized, clean, escalators and elevators up and down for your heavy needs. The bathrooms are superb! Blown away by how good they keep it running. Not at all busy, most people probably don't even know about this Sky train (including the friends who live in Phoenix) More people should use public transport it really can help the environment =)

There is no feeling like getting to your hotel from the airport without a taxi or rental car. Easy transfer to light rail and within one block to 3 major hotels. Every airport should be set up like this.

Such an easy way to pick up travelers on busy airport days! Right off exit 2. Convenient on and off to 202.

Honestly, I had no ultimate destination and strictly wanted to sightsee. Having no idea what to expect, I chose the day pass at $4 and got on at this stop. Yes, they will check your ticket. Mine was scanned three times while I went to and from Phoenix. One girl gave an expired pass to the ticket gentleman (sorry I don't know his correct title) and all he said was "your ticket isn't valid, make sure you get a valid ticket". Well, that was nice. In the train in the trip into Phoenix, the windows were covered with some sort of dotted barrier, so we couldn't really see out. In the cart back into Tempe, we could see out with no problem, even when it started getting dark. I guess we lucked out. We met this super cool dude that showed us his video collection of train characters that he's encountered, including the window licker. Footage of a guy literally making out with his reflection. You can't make this stuff up. When we got to the end of the route the announcement indicated that it was time to exit, but we were in for the long haul and stayed on. So, don't pay attention to that announcement if you're site seeing too.

It's fun when you get on a train with lots of local fans that are excited for a big game. But as with most transportation systems, you get some characters that like to jump on for a free ride. I've definitely have had some interesting people watching moments over the years. Valley Metro Rail has 38 stops/'stations between Gilbert and Phoenix. I usually park at the Apache and 101 location because there is a large park-and-ride parking lot there. The light rail does have a stop at the airport that connects with Sky Harbor's Sky Train. But it sucks that you can't leave your car at a park-and-ride overnight. Because the light rail runs along the street and not above ground, many cars have run into trains over the years. As of 2023, Valley Metro charges $2 for one ride and $4 for an all-day pass. Security does occasional check for tickets. Valley Metro Rail has several extensions being planned and currently under construction to reach other parts of the Valley.

You can not beat the light rail especially for a D-Backs game. If you are going to a baseball game it dumps you off right at the stadium. I also take it for the Symphony, First Fridays, and any event I have in Phx. No expensive parking garage fees needed. It is an experience. Free entertainment and people watching for sure. If you are seeing a concert at the old America West Arena, AKA, the stadium that changes it's name too frequently for Mary to remember what it is today, the Light Rail will be free with your paid ticket. ( or at least it is as of the writing of this review. So if you are reading this much after 2018 please double check on that because they used to do the baseball stadium and then they stopped) I am patiently awaiting the Light Rail to continue to Westgate and the Cardinal's Stadium. ( I do know the name of that one today it is State Farm arena-hahahaha) I work there part time and employees have a huge Rigaramo with parking and just getting to and from work. The Light Rail would be a blessing in and out of the stadium, increase work turnover rates, and of course be great for fans too. It now takes over an hour to get out of there.

The light rail no longer took us to the regular venues we have visited but dumped us off .8 miles from Chase Field. We were then supposed to cross an intersection twice and wait for another train. We waited in the heat until we just decided to walk to Chase Field. By the time we arrived, we were hot, thirsty, and miserable, and a train never passed by us, so one never came. Finding the train to return home was equally a huge pain! So we hadn't used the light rail again until yesterday to get to Chase Field on the 4th of July. We thought Valley Metro might have fixed this transportation catastrophe. They did not. In fact, it was worse! Valley Metro claims we could "enjoy the 8-minute walk" to Chase Field. Once again, no second train came, so we walked .8 miles in the blazing heat for 20 minutes (I checked my GPS to get an accurate distance and time)!! When trying to return home, we had to walk back to Central and had no idea which train would take us back. Valley Metro has ruined what originally was a good transportation option to downtown, but no longer. If anyone is elderly, has a disability, health issues, or trouble walking, avoid this mess! If you drive, take an Uber or a taxi, or even ride a horse, you will be happier if you need to go to an event downtown. Valley Metro should be ashamed of what they have done to what used to be good transportation.
