I was looking for veal. I seldom eat it but, while in France, why not partake? The first item I quickly grabbed was ris de veau. You know...on first glance, my brain said veal risotto. Yea, I speak french but...not that well, apparently. Unintentionally, I set myself up for my own french farce. Hahaha.
I bought lots of other great gems to eat. (See pics below) I felt like I was in my own five star dining restaurant when I devoured the fois gras hors d'oeuvres. Did I mention this is one of my favorite stores? It's all frozen food but they have the sidebar items like EVOO, vinegar, wine etc to prep your ris de veau meal.
But the ris de veau is sweetbreads aka thymus or pancreas gland. While that settled in, I was a tad consternated. I had already bought it. And I wasn't walking back in the cold rainy wind. It was also $20 (for the box in the pictures), about 250 g or 8 ounces). I considered giving it away to one of the employees at the vacation club. While I did want to try it, the time was not necessarily now. Also I didn't have flour as the directions (in French) dictated. But the adventuress in moi said to just tenaciously try it. Sweetbreads are supposed to be good for you??! So...I made it (without the flour). It has a strong, unique taste, like eating a soft fatty gonad....
