Tasty sweet pies that are quality and well priced, not to mention good for you- as far as a pie can be I guess. Good cookies too.

I am updating my review of Pie Junkie after Nancy, the owner, reached out to me after I wrote about my disappointment after trying their Mahogany locations sweet tarts. She arranged for me to try two more tarts at the Crowfoot outlet closer to my home. They were excellent. The crust was crunchy, not hard & the filling perfectly smooth. I'll drop into that store in the future when I want something special for the family or friends. Thanks again to Nancy for making things right. read more

We bought two tarts at the Mahogany Pie Junkie outlet yesterday. Both came wrapped in a thin wooden ring which we assumed was to protect what we expected to be light & crumbly pastry. On removing the ring we were presented with a thick rock hard crust of cooked dough, very hard to chip at. As for the fillings, my key lime custard was grainy, not smooth while my friend's rhubarb filling was dry with no sauce. After reading the good reviews, this was a real disappointment. Knowing there are places like Linas & Paris which always serve wonderful pastries, it will be our last visit to any of the other Pie Junkies. read more

The Pie Hole is an adorable shop located in an assuming strip in Spruce Cliff. Featuring both sweet and savoury pies, the Pie Hole sells a variety of pies homemade every day with fresh ingredients including seasonal fruit and real butter. I was intrigued by the sour cherry pie which came with a beautiful lattice crust and dusting of sugar crystals. The filling was, in fact, sour, being a nice deviation from the grocery store-standard pie filling. The crust has flaky and held together well. My one criticism rests in the price. At $15+tax for a roughly 8 inch pie, the price is higher than comparable shops in the city. read more

I stopped in this little pie shop while in the area. It's in a little strip mall and across the street from the Greek church nearby. Lots of delicious pies both Sweet & Savory . They also have sausage rolls and a delicious coconut brownie type square. I ate them before I could think about taking a pix of my items eaten! Very tasty... I've wanted to try pie junkie for a long time. But every time I'm in the area it's a Monday and they're closed. Finally I was in the area on a Thursday! Lucky me. After the owner had helped a a couple of regulars I was the last one left in the store. I told her that I had never been in before and she gave me the grand tour. She told me what each and every pie was, both savory and sweet. She also told me a little bit about custom ordering and that they can do gluten-free. Good to know as my dad is Celiac. I loaded up. I grabbed a couple of savory options for dinner that night. One Australian and one Shepherds. Then a couple of mini key lime (wife's favourite) and apple for me. All were delicious. The pies are delicious but we had a very rough time with a custom pie. The issue was around communication - some missed meetings and lack of clarity were some things that caused stress, which was tough in the planning process of the biggest event of our lives. Again, this is a review mostly about the process. The product itself was pretty and tasty. And if you are walking in for something you'll be happy. The savoury pies are especially good. But I cannot recommend getting a custom pie made here based on my experience. read more

We came from the 'burbs and to make the trip worth it, we bought a few pies (Aussie pie, lamb pie, chicken pot pie, salted caramel apple pie, pecan pie) and a salted caramel cookie. Everything came to $55. Yes it's expensive but we knew that going in. You are getting gourmet quality fillings with every pie you get, savoury or sweet. It's perfectly buttery with a light, flaky crust. If God made pie, this is what it would taste like. Glad to find something like this in Calgary! read more

Wonderful spot. Absolutely delicious pies of all sorts. A great place when you need a quick inexpensive, great quality meal, but not much time. My personal favorite is the Brie and chutney, but you truly can't go wrong. Prices are fair when you consider the quality of ingredients and work that goes into them. Oh man where do I begin..... On the positive side the woman that helped me was wonderful! It was my first time in the bakery and she took me around and told me all about the different pastries they have, and she did it with such enthusiasm that I couldn't wait to try everything! However..... On the negative side, this place is just wayyyyy over priced for what you get. I went there twice, once to buy tha savoury pies, the second time to try the sweet pies! Both times I was tremendously disappointed ! Their crust is their only saving grace and only on the savoury pies, which were just an acquired taste I would say . Their chicken pot pie was not good at all , I scooped out the filling and just ate the crust! The sausage roll which was not fully enveloped in crust was small and the price made want to cry. Their sweet pies which are extremely small, the crust was hard, not flaky and buttery, just not tasty at all. With the size of their pies I would be embarrassed if I had to serve a slice to a guest, it would be too small ! Maybe for a small child! I really wanted to love this place since I am such a huge pie fan, but alas not my cup of tea! I understand its all organic and in house made, even their sausage for the sausage rolls , but still the price was atrocious for what you get! read more

I LOVE this place. I am not good at baking pie crust and I miss the lard based crusts from the UK, so was super happy to find this place. I tried their pies at last year's Avenue Magazine best food event and was so happy to hear there was a shop near my home. It has a very small seating area, but I generally only by to take home. Love their savory pies and their sweet, especially the individual ones. I have tried almost all of the savory ones and have no complaints about any of them. My husband loved his apple pie and I really loved the key lime pie. Its pretty expensive, but worth the money for a treat. Hope they never change their crust recipe. read more

Spotted The Pie Hole stand at the Downtown Farmer's Market. After tasting the apple pie and sour cherry pie, I was sold! I bought an apple hand pie and a sour cherry hand pie for $5/each. Oh my! The pastry is ever so buttery and every bite was delicious. The sour cherry is their signature dessert pie. I understand why! They also had big pies for $15/pie. So expensive. 2 small pies (4" diameter), 2 small sausage rolls, $30. That's just greed, the mark up on these is ridiculous. We walked in, said hi, was ignored. No prices on display, asked what an Aussie Beef pie was, got an unemotional, vague description that in no way explained why it was an Aussie Beef pie. The sausage rolls were good, but I've had good ones waaaayyy cheaper than that. So, it's tasty, but I would never go back, not at those unmarked prices. read more

We were hit with the aroma of butter as soon as we walked in the door. Felt like home or walking into grandma's :) We shared a four cheese and onion hand pie and a steak and mushroom pie. The dough was flaky and melt in your mouth and a nice contrast with the the gooey cheese and onion mixture. The steak and mushroom pie had a good amount of filling in it, though I would have liked a bit more gravy/sauce with meat more evenly distributed in the mixture. I would still order again though- looking forward to trying the Aussie pie on our next trip. Pie hole bakery is located in a strip mall by the Shagannapi golf course. Family business with great service. Simple but fresh decor. A true "hole in the wall" discovery we will be sure to visit again. read more

I have not yet had the pleasure of visiting the shop itself, but every so often these wonderful ladies bring an assortment of sweet and savoury pies to the Foothills Medical Centre! The amazing staff make not only incredible pies but are also very generous! The pastry is made with real butter and even once pies are reheated from frozen, they are incredibly flaky and just the perfect texture. The fruit fillings are absolutely delicious and have just the right amount of sweetness. Not overly sweet and the tartness in the sour cherry or the apple with salted caramel hand pies are nicely balanced with the sprinkled sugar on top. The steak and mushroom pie is fabulous for a quick lunch, with incredible flavour and generous pieces of steak in the filling! I've been keeping a couple of hand-sized pies in my freezer to tie me over until the next time I can buy some more! read more

I had never had a pie crust made with butter. Perhaps I set my expectations too high. Although the butter flavour is there, the texture is lack lustre. Rather than a flakey crust it is kind of hard and crunchy. The fillings are tasty, although I did find a small pit in my sour cherry pie. For the size of pie, the price is a bit high. If the product was exceptional it might be worth it but it just wasn't. I purchased 4 different types of pie, so a good sampling, but none that I would go back for. read more

Such a disappointment! We bought a peach and apricot pie - it looked delicious, but that was all. The pie crust was thick, gummy and hard - no flakiness or flavour and unpleasant to eat. And, it was very small with minimal filling. At this exorbitant price I thought we were getting something very special - because the location was awesome and the people were great and really promoted how good their pies were... but sadly, they were wrong. Pies are a big deal in our family and having a great crust is crucial - if I'd made this pastry I'd have thrown it out and started again! My family would have been mortified to be served this! So much hype and promise... and so much potential - am hoping they reconsider their current sweet pie pastry and correct what's wrong with it, because I'd like to see them succeed! But for now... With such great reviews and me being near buy today I thought I would stop in. Only a few flavours left at 11:30 on a Saturday and the key lime sold out so I bought a lemon. I thought I was getting meringue but turned out it was lemon cream. It was just okay flavour nothing to get excited about, but the crust was awful! Rock hard, nothing light a flakey about it. The Pie Hole is not close to me and it certainly isn't something I would go out of my way to buy. $15 for a 6" pie and I have to be honest to say I had better for 1/3 the price at Safeway. read more

A great new family-owned bakery in our little community of Spruce Cliff and Wildwood. I personally like the savoury pies, the potatoe pies and the steak pies being my favourites. The pork pie was a little to "formed" and could use something to make it softer. The other sweet pies are very good as well, especially the saskatoon berry. Go there and then follow up with an espresso at Little Mondays Coffee a couple of stores down! read more

Although I like the taste of the pies they bake here, like others, I find the prices are too high to indulge very often. My favorite is the hand held sour cherry pie at $5. - a once in a while treat. I tried the tomato tart the last time I was there but at $8. for a 3inch round single serving pie I'm not likely to be buying it again. I guess if you are a single person and don't mind spending a few dollars on your food this place would fit the bill but I can't imagine feeding a family with items from here as they are just too pricey. read more

Was very disappointed. Went in today for a raspberry chocolate brownie and an almond caramel square to bring home as a treat. Got home and opened the box to find a lemon blueberry square, broken into two pieces, with very little flavour except for the very burned crust, and an almond caramel square so hard it couldn't be bitten into or even cut into with a fork. So not only was half of my order wrong, what was there was inedible. Don't think I will be going back which is unfortunate as it looked like The Pie Hole had potential. read more
