I have eaten at many marina restaurants and this is certainly one of my top picks. I had the Fresh Catfish sandwich with coleslaw and fries and everything was hot, fresh and delicious. Plus there were two entire filets on the sandwich. The breading was perfectly done and the fish was light and flaky. My grown kids had already raved about the fries and they did not disappoint. This was the perfect closing meal for our houseboat weekend. Waitstaff was fun and witty and super friendly even though we walked in close to closing time. The sunset from the table was breathtaking. If I lived closer, I would make this my regular haunt. I wish they were open for breakfast, but you have to wait until lunchtime. Another plus was just outside the restaurant is a small turtle/fish/duck habitat where you can feed the lake creatures. Even though it is probably geared towards small children, I found myself entranced watching the turtles and even put a few quarters in the food dispenser- so worth a quarter! read more

Very unique place to go. Restaurant is literally floating on water in Dale Hollow lake. Great views out the window. My husband loves the catfish diner. I really enjoyed the steak wrap. Ordered carry out at a very busy time on the lake...6pm on a Thursday, and the service along with the food was excellent. Probably the best place to eat at in the area but its very busy in the evenings and even more so on weekends. I opted for the Smokey Mountain BBQ nachos, it was a plethora of food, enough for two, very delicious, piled high with smoked pulled pork, queso, shredded cheese and pico. Only thing i wish it had with it would have been jalepeños. We also had the catfish dinner on our order and again, it was enough for 2 people to eat, but some of the best catfish i've had in a long time. 5 stars, well done Pier 42! Keep in mind Pier 42 is a seasonal restaurant, others reported it was "permanently closed" prior to our arrival at the marina, and much to my surprise, there were well over 70+ people dining inside and out as i walked up. read more

This is our 4th year coming to Sunset Marina for either lunch or dinner. Always good food, good proportions and awesome service. Always friendly and always there to help. We helped ourselves to a special of 11.00 pitcher of beer while waiting for the fabulous chicken nachos and the kids had their lunch that comes with a frisbee. We shared the taco salad, not one to say it wasnt great , but it was big enough to share and everything was fresh. After a day on the water, salad sometimes is a good thing. Why do I keep going back? I must be intoxicated by the beauty and serenity of Dale Hollow and Sunset Marina. Horrible experience every time we go. This time it was just for the ice cream cone I promised my daughter. We asked for a two scoop ice cream cone. They charged us $5.00 for 2 SPOONFULS of ice cream. I said I would have never ordered this if I knew that is what I would get. The response was, "Sorry, but I don't make the rules or the price." I will not allow the beauty of my surroundings fool me any longer. I will never patronize Pier 42 again. If I can figure out how to be a good Yelper and post a photo, I will. read more

We visited pier 42 over this last Memorial Day weekend. This was our 4th time visiting Dale Hollow. One of our favorite things to do is to make our way over to Sunset Marina and eat at the restaurant formerly called "Sunset Marina Restaurant". This year there are new owners and disappointment. In my opinion they do have big shoes to fill since the prior owners had a great menu (bouy nachos, big country breakfast and more). The new fare is mostly BBQ pulled pork, baked beans, mac and cheese etc. And they no longer serve breakfast. :( Our first visit to pier 42 was at lunch. Not many people were there. The menu felt rather limited but we excited to give something new a try. Two of us ordered salads to find out they didn't have any lettuce at the time. Then we all ordered a version of the pulled pork. It was ok, not very warm. I asked for it to be delivered without a bun, it still came with a bun. The smoked potato salad was very strange. Definitely smoked, but it wasn't pleasant. The baked beans were ok. The 3 BBQ sauce options were "house" specialities and I honestly couldn't find one that I liked but made due. Needless to say were were disappointed. The waitress was nice but seemed very inexperienced and kept dropping things. We felt everyone deserves as second chance. Two days later we visited for dinner. The place was PACKED. You would think this would be a good thing. But it turns out it was full of disgruntled guests that were waiting way too long for food. They were out of items like buns. We went ahead and ordered some food. Assuming it would be a long wait because of the crowd, we ordered some appetizer nachos. Can't go wrong, right? WRONG. The chips were stale/chewy and the cheese was cold. Gross. Our meals came 1 hr and 15 minutes later. My chicken fingers were nothing special. You could have picked them up from the grocery freezer section. My mac and cheese decently tasting but nothing kraft couldn't make. Backed beans were also ok. The staff looked overloaded and stressed. Our second visit was even more of a disappointment then our first. We even had friends that were considering buying a house boat and keeping it at sunset because they loved the whole experience. Now that the restaurant has gone massively downhill, they have reconsidered getting the houseboat altogether. I just got off the phone with those same friends and they are currently at Dale Hollow today. They plan on giving Pier 42 a 3rd and final try tonight and I'm curious to see if anything has changed in about a month. **Also, go over to Sunset Marina Restaurant yelp page (the former name). There is also a review over there about Pier 42. It almost echoed my experience. We will be back down on Labor Day. Let's see what happens. If you go, be ready to wait and have low expectations. read more

I absolutely love Sunset Marina, and try to visit at least once a year. I had not been to the restaurant since it changed, so this past weekend I gave it a try. My experience was very similar to what Karen B. wrote last year. Ordered the nachos and they came out cold. They "made a fresh order" that I believe was the same plate which had been put in the microwave for a few minutes. Pork was barely warm and dried out. This is my favorite place to eat on Dale Hollow Lake.Started with smoke wings serves with choice of 3 different sauces. Delicious. We live at Starpoint and have missed Tommie's catfish. Perfectly cooked and the breading is just right. The smoked potato salad and cornbread pancakes are delicious. Green beans with whole clove of garlic and butter sauce. We were in the area for a funeral. We decided to check out Sunset Marina. We ate here 3 times during our stay. I had the pulled pork and it was very good. 2nd time I had a cheeseburger and fries. The cheeseburger was fresh and juicy. The fries were the shoestring type which I dont care for. The last night we were there I had a chicken cheese quesadilla and I have to say it was very good. My family and I have eaten at this restaurant several times over the years. We usually visit the lake about twice a summer. I don't know if management has changed or if they have different cooks or what. This place is awesome. We had a group of 14 people and not one complaint. The kickin chicken sandwich may be one of the best sandwiches I have ever eaten! You combine that with beer on tap and the fact that there is an ice cream bar for the kids!! I am giving this place 3 stars because of execution not food. We ate breakfast here before going on the lake. We were the ONLY table in the restaurant at the time. I ordered a waffle with fried potatoes and my husband ordered a sausage egg and cheese on a croissant. It took over 30 minutes to get our food and only received it after asking about the status of our order. The server brought it to the table and my waffle was ice cold. I assume it had been ready for at least 15 minutes. My husband said his was warm. At lunch we decided to call the restaurant and order food to go and eat it on the boat. My husband ordered a cheeseburger with fries and I ordered a grilled cheese with fries. When I got to the dock I went to pick up our food. It was $25 with no drinks and I noticed they had forgotten our fries. So after trying to get the attention of the cashier who was totally ignoring me the hostess finally went to get our fries. Of course we had to wait for them to be cooked so I enjoyed a cold grilled cheese with hot fries. The 2 meals costed us over $50 and neither were worth it and both were cold. Unfortunately if you are at the marina this place is your only option so brace yourself for expensive cold incomplete orders. You would be better off getting snacks from the store read more

As I sit here in on a cold November day wishing it was summer time and I could go back to one of my favorite places in the world, DHL, I decided to revisit my Yelp review of Pier 42 and once I did I realized that I might have been under the influence when I wrote it! This place doesn't deserve a 2 star rating, shoot they barely deserve a 1 star. We have been coming to the lake at Sunset for 22 years and over that time we have tried Pier 42 several times and it is always bad!!! The view is Great and so is the atmosphere but the food is just plain terrible. I read some of the good reviews and I notice that most always say "best place on the lake" and I think that is what they mean. Since there is not many options ON the lake this is their choice. BEWARE. Under new management and I recommend to stay away until they get their act together or someone else takes over. A very simple dinner of pulled pork and chicken fingers for three took roughly 2 1/2 hours to receive after ordering. We sat and watched four different parties sit down and get up and leave from the same table without ever being waited on. As a matter of fact only one table outside actually received their food and paid and left while we were there. The best thing about the dinner was the French fries and even they were cold. The pulled pork was very bland and the chicken fingers were very plain and not as good as Tyson frozen chicken fingers you can buy at any grocery store. The original order was for a fried chicken sandwich but I was later told that there were no buns so it might be better to order the chicken fingers. Same for my drink order. No sweet tea on a Sunday evening at 6:00pm. WOW!! Can't you make more?? We were very patient and our waitress did the best she could but none of these issues were hers to take responsibility for. Se was very apologetic and even offered complimentary dessert for our wait, but none of us wanted to wait another hour or two to get it.. Our group has made a point to visit this restaurant several times each lake season over the past 6-8 years and we have always had wonderful experiences there until now. I hope they get back to the type of food and service that made them so popular. We holed up here for a thunderstorm on a Sea Doo tour of Dale Hollow earlier this summer for lunch. No beer before 12n on Sunday, but when we ordered lunch the waitress took the bar order too and at 12:02 a big cold pint of Yuengling draft hit the table. Service was prompt and friendly, and food was very good. Only knock: Portions seemed small for the price. You're paying a "water tax" for seasonal service on the water at this restaurant, but still all in all a decent deal. read more

Absolutely DELICIOUS! We visited Dale Hollow for a girls weekend and happened to stop into Pier 42. The service was AMAZING! They have SO many delicious options on the menu. We went to Pier 42 twice last summer while visiting the area and loved it. The casual atmosphere is comfortable whether you are coming in off the lake or going out for dinner. My first visit to Pier 42 with friends who'd eaten before...same experience as others (with different experiences). Waited and waited (very few patrons) food came piecemeal (we wanted to eat together outside) cold, with no implements or condiments, some food cold but at the time it sat it would have to be. We had to ask several times for our drinks and had to go get them ourselves sitting on counter. Food was nothing special as stated tho ok mostly. Beans like from a can of pork n beans. Clerk had to go somewhere for change or something and was gone forever while food sat on the counter. When we complained were told someone didn't show up for work. We saw only few people working. I can't imagine if they'd been busy. We pretty much had to wait on ourselves and asking for something didn't mean we'd get it or if we did in any kind of timely manner. There should be enough staff is someone doesn't show up it doesn't go down in flames. But I don't think that was the problem. Maybe they won't hire enough to do. Most of the food just wasn't up to par at all and the service sucks! would not recommend to anyone. Guess we'll take a grill and do burgers next time! read more

When you take out the reviews by the co-owner's/investor's you will find that Pier 42 is not even close to being equal to the previous restaurant at Sunset Marina. The menu is now seriously lacking compared to that offered by previous management. IMO, it is just another me-too bar-b-que, that happens to have a great location, with a menu that lacks imagination and has limited hours. Even if you like the TV, the bar-b-que and the menu are still seriously lacking compared to other fantastic bar-b-que places around Dale Hollow Lake! Having previously visited the 'old' Sunset Marina restaurant, almost weekly, we have now moved our business to the 'T' House on Willow Grove Highway (HWY 294) and the restaurant at Dale Hollow Lake State Park in KY west of Albany, KY. IMO, better food with a more diverse menu! The KY state park also offers a full service marina. read more

Had dinner on a not too busy Thursday night. Table for 3, were greeted and seated promptly. Our server took our drink orders. They and appetizers were served right away and everything was hot. and tasty Our sandwiches were good, nice portions. Sides dishes are imaginative. My only issue is with prices ($7.95 for a little bucket of fried pickles?) But you are at a resort and also paying for the nice ambiance. I'm a local and would go more often if it was a little less expensive but my out of town guests enjoyed the experience very much. They only serve beer but allow you to bring a bottle of wine and the $5 corkage fee is very reasonable. Its definitely worth a stop especially if you get hungry when you're on the lake. There are too few full service restaurants on Dale Hollow any more. read more
