What a total disappointment. I stop here to see what the place is about and to see if I can sample or even get a glass of wine. First of all the place is smaller 1000 sq Ft but in the front not much room to move around, but I'm a large guy and use to that. I walk in and start to look around. This woman giving a speech to maybe 5 people said sir you need to step outside and wait your turn and someone will be with you. She was so smart about it. I said I'm on the opposite side of the room, she said no can't do that. Terrible customer service. Lost any type of business you'd get from me. read more

Nice little wine shop in the middle of the Market District. We stopped in for a quick purchase. I walked around for a couple of minutes and was approached by Mike. I told him I was looking for an Aussie Sauv Blanc. I meant to say New Zealand. Well, he said he had a Great NZ Sauv Blanc walked me over to the Seresin Sauvignon Blanc. I told him I needed another bottle similar- and he led me to the Lobo Hills Sauvignon Blanc. I took them both and were outta there in just a few minutes. It is a nice shop. They have a good selection of wines. The staff provides knowledgeable information and recommendations. Being what I consider a "Boutique" wine shop the selection is, of course limited and the prices are a little higher. But all in all a good place to go. read more

Kudos to the manager and staff here at Pike & Western! During my Seattle visit, I was able to check in here and pick some local wines. I specifically wanted local wines from Washington to bring back to California. Something that would compliment BBQ red meats and grilled white fish. I picked up six bottles recommended by the staff for my upcoming dinner parties. I didn't want to lug these bad boys home on the plane so I opted to have them shipped. Shipping was less than $20.00 so it was so worth the added cost. It took about two weeks for my delivery to arrive. They ensured that the wine would travel during safe temperature conditions (via UPS ground). Upon arrival, I opened up my purchases and immediately into my wine cellar. They have a supreme way of packing your bottles. I even kept the cardboard holders for the bottles. I haven't cracked them open yet but i'm excited to host my summer dinner parties. So I'll save the last remaining star for the wine tasting. I can't share the wines I bought at this time. Stay tuned. Make note that this place is pretty expensive because its in the tourist area of Pike's Place. So expect the dealers mark up. We stopped in since it was the first wine shop along the way to Pikes. I was curious to see what brands they carried and price ranges. I spoke with the employees, who provided excellent choices to what my wine preferences were. I ended up buying 2 bottles of wine, one of which was an amazing blend - rosso and brachetto for about $20. The night I arrived back to SD, I busted out the blend at dinner. IT WAS DELISH!!!!!!! [Out-of-Towner Review] The name isn't lying. They got you. Wine, the cheap stuff, the middle range stuff, and the expensive stuff. They've got the white, the red, the bubbly, and of course the trinkets. We weren't greeted when we walked in. We perused the store. Found the section we were looking for - local wines under $20, specifically a Cab Sav. I think I was a little irked by the fact that the owner/employee didn't even acknowledge us when we walked in -- we were the only other humans in the small shop. He only spoke to us when we found our bottle of wine and brought it up to him to purchase it. We made small talk and he was nice, but he'd already left his impression on me. I thought it was cool, albeit touristy, to stop in this store. We love wine, so it was a no brainer for us. But when walking from PPM, you could easily miss this spot at the end of the street. Lucky for us, we had been siting across from it at their outdoor seating and charging (outlets for the public to use) stations. It caught our eye, so we went. Pike and Western Wine Merchants have a great selection of wines. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. I'm a Fan of Ice Wines, one bottle caught my eye...not to many places carry Ice Wines from Canada. I purchased a bottle of "La Face Cachee de la Pomme - **Neige** Cidre De Glace --- Ice Cider. Its an apple ice wine that is produced in the depths of the Quebec winter..a mixture containing a blend of 5 kg of Mcintosh and Spartan apples. The Liquid is a Golden color & has a complex aroma of freshly picked and very ripe apples and achieves the perfect balance between tart/mellow. ----This Bottle will set you back about $35 Now I'm just waiting for a Special Moment to Open it... =D read more

Really top notch service here. I had just picked up some fresh sockeye salmon form one of the many fish locations on Pike place and with a couple of extra sides to prepare I was worn out. No way did I have the energy to look through the bottle selection they had here. This was the first stop at Pike Place anyway. But since the idea of cooking fish wasn't formed till after going around the place, I figured that buying the wine would come second to actually finding something to pair it with. No need to have the buggy lead the horse. Coming back in here I asked what they would suggest for a pairing of Sockeye Salmon as well as the sides of greens that I was going to grill up. Michael Teer was more than happy to jump on the case! He pointed me out a couple of the wines and my taste buds were in his hands. Really was beyond helpful. Asking me what kinds of wines I had in the past, which ones I liked. Which ones were not my favorite. I had explained that I was but a SoCal boy. So this new and strange mass amount of Washington wines were exciting to me. Though to be honest, I have had my fair share of WA wines. Just don't let him know that. Finally we nailed it. The perfect wine for the meal. At least so I entrusted him to lead me to it. Later on once the Salmon was grilled and the food was sitting plated and all, pouring out the chilled bottle really worked wonders with the meal! I'll never doubt you, MT. Never again. Awesome and helpful all around. You should take an adventure of just making an entire meal out of all the items you find at Pike Place. Top it off with a bottle from Pike and Western. read more

My experience here is a bit limited. My girlfriend and I were in Seattle for a week's vacay and Pike Place Market was on our to do list while we were there. Wandering from the farmer's market area we stumbled into Pike and Western Wine Merchants. I, personally, am not to big on wine. No me gusta. My girlfriend, however, is an enthusiast. So, of course, to make her happy, I fought and fought and pleaded to not go in. But after a short, one-sided battle, she won like she always did. We stopped inside and I stayed uninterested to wine as ever. But luckily for us, on Saturday's local wine vendors come in and let customers sample their wines; so we got to do a miniature little wine tasting. To be honest, the wine that the vendor had out wasn't too shabby. I actually enjoyed a good majority of what he had to offer. I liked that they give locals a chance to show off their goods. It really shows a bit of hometown comradery. read more

Maybe I'm a sucker, but on Friday afternoons between 3 and 6 you can walk into this place and sample wines for FREE and then buy something if you want to. The sucker parts comes in when I buy a lot of wine. Almost too much to carry back to the car without a follow up visit to a chiropractor. You can ask dumb questions about what you're drinking but you won't be made to feel dumb, and whatever is on the menu for the tastings is always good. read more

Wandered in here while strolling Pike Place. Its a small shop, but they have a large selection of wines. The staff was great, I explained what kind of wine I liked and the guy helped me pick out two new wines (Chianti and Rioja). He was very knowledgable and you could tell he had personally tasted each wine he talked about and he was honest about which wines were good, not so good, and great for the value. The prices range from very affordable ($10) to super expensive ($100+). He also took down the name of a dessert wine I've been looking for to see if he could find it somewhere. I would be notified by email if they did. I came back a couple days later to pick up a gift (wine saver) and another bottle of wine. Once again, staff was very helpful and I have a new wine to try out! It's helpful that they have written descriptions for many of the wines and I saw signs saying you could get 10% or so off when you ordered 6 bottles or a case, something I might take advantage of in the future. They also have free tastings on Fridays. Great service, knowledgable staff, large selection of wine from all around the world (Italy, France, Spain, Germany) as well as wine from the Northwest. This place was recommended by a nice fellow at Sweet Iron. I was having a small gathering at my hotel suite and needed some great wine without breaking the bank. Maureen spent some time with me, and I ended up buying five unique bottles (all different) for less than $60. My guests went nuts over all of them: Rioja, temperanillo mix, WA state wine that I loved. I love coming to Seattle, and I am a fan of Pike and Western for life. I wasn't in this place for very long, but boyfriend and I popped in to see the wares. They have an excellent selection of reds, whites, desserts, d everything in between. I bought a bottle of Yakima Valley Late Harvest Riesling 2007 (my absolute favorite! They only carry it at the Whole Foods market near where my boyfriend lives, and I can't find it anywhere else) and they also had the Ice Wine version in a smaller bottle, of course. Prices were slightly higher than in CA, but scarce things demand to be purchased! read more

I hadn't been back since but now I feel obliged to go back! Michael, the owner of the store took time out of his day to personally apologize to me over the phone. He explained his business philosphy to me and I felt assured that the incident I had was neither customary or acceptable to his standards. I found this place to be awesome. Helpful and knowledgeable. Normally I go into a place like this expecting to get ripped off. I did not have that experience here at all. It seems reasonably priced and super helpful. They should be able to hook you up with a good wine any style and any price range you want. I ended up with a 13 dollar Walla Walla and REALLY enjoyed it. He helped us with cheese options and sent us over to Beechers to get a cheese to go with it. At this same location for 40 years, Michael Teer has fostered the development of, and then eschewed due to overpricing, the local wine scene, and then moved on to the best of small producers from France and Italy. When we lived in Seattle, the weekly tastings were part of our schedule, and I'm pleased to see that those continue. I have been here both times I visited Seattle and have been pleased with my wine selection. I tried their recommendation "Dead Horse" (I think that's what it was called) and liked it quite a bit. I am glad that they feature local (Oregon = local?) wines from the Northwest. Being from California, I thought it was a waste of space to have California wines. Besides, I personally don't think California wines are all that exciting. I really think they should focus their store on local vintages, especially since they are in a tourist area and are probably frequented mostly by tourist types like me. They don't seem to carry any inexpensive (under ten bucks) wine, but I suppose this isn't supposed to be a place to get table wines. Most of their selection ranges from 15 to 45 bucks or so. In any event, it is a great store to duck out of the Pike Place Market summertime heat and cool off. The staff are friendly and seem willing to help out with good recommendations. They are kind, and helpful, especially when you are seeking a wine for your friend's wedding that will age well for them to open on their 10th anniversary. Wow !!! What an awesome shop. Jason is so knowledgeable and really makes you feel at home. His wine tasting notes are spot on. Wish all wine salesmen were as good as Jason, what an asset to his shop!! LOVE! Not to be missed, especially if you are doing your own sideways tour of Washington State wines while in Seattle - they ship so you can pick up your favorites to bring home. Found a couple of hard to find boutique wines that the producers are sold out of - like the kick ass KUNG FU GIRL Riesling (Why Kung Fu Girl? Because Riesling and Girls kick ass!) by K Vintners from Walla Walla and Domaine Pierre Noire, Viongier. I found the staff super friendly and knowledgeable but, I agree I think they should ditch the California wine all together! Im so enamored with the Pacific Northwest I may just have to open my own store! read more

As a local I have shopped here many times. No longer. Walked into the shop today and was greeted by one of the surliest people ever. She was no help when I asked if they had a particular wine that I had the opportunity to drink last week in Oregon. Instead of saying "gosh, I haven't heard of that wine. . ." her response was to go on about how it tasted when it was the complete opposite. Then, instead of assisting me or trying to suggest something comparable she basically ignored me and gave me an "eye roll." I ended up purchasing two bottles of wine only because I was in need of a gift. No thank you, no niceness. I am no longer shopping here again (Pete's Wine Shop in Bellevue) is much better and friendlier staff imo. read more

This shop has become one of my must stop places whenever I visit the city. They carry an excellent selection of wine and the staff (at least the ones I have encountered so far) are very friendly and knowledgeable. The store itself is well organized and has a sophisticated yet relaxed feel to it. I love going to the market first, picking up some delicious food (mmm, fresh oyster shooters and smoked salmon anyone?), a few snacks from different stalls, then head over to this wine shop and grab a few bottles to enjoy back at the hotel. I would let the staff know what type of food I have with me, my price range, and then ask them for pairing recommendations. I like to do both congruent and complementary pairings, and so far, the staff there have been pretty spot on. There is no pressure to buy and you can tell that the staff truly enjoy what they do! Yes, since it is a "boutique" wine shop, the prices are a bit higher compare to a local grocery store. At the same time, you are paying for high quality service and valuable information on wines. Totally worth it in my opinion. Towards the back of the shop, there is a sales section featuring a variety of wines at discounted prices. I love digging through this area and picking up something that I would not normally consider to try. read more

I don't know how they get so much wine into this place, but I do know that I love their wine. I interact frequently with the good folks at Pike & Western, and they haven't yet steered me wrong. Go in and ask them for a good bottle of wine and name a price point, they'll steer you in the right direction after a few questions about your preferences. Really limited options and expensive to boot. I was looking for a Montepulciano, or even a Barolo, and they had ONE kind of Montepulciano (not to my liking) and their Barolos beyond my price range. I will spend anywhere from $10 to $30 on a good bottle, but this place is more miss-than-hit. I was in the area and headed to a bbq later that day so I stopped in here randomly looking for some wine. super knowledgeable staff and was given great recommendations to bring to my bbq. Got 1 bottle of riesling and 1 bottle of cab - wish i remembered the names but both were delicious and all the guests loved them! i was on a $15-20 per bottle budget and i had no problem staying within that with my selections. also love that they sell and support local WA wines and proud to say that both bottles i purchased were local to the area :) read more

My husband and I were planning a trip to Seattle & cruise to Alaska and wanted to take our favorite wines on the cruise plus a bottle of Dom to celebrate our 25th Wedding Anniversary. I found Pikes & Western Wine on the Internet and sent them and a couple of other wine shops some email explaining what I need and the wines I was looking form. From the start Jason was wonderful. He was quick in responding to my message and getting me the information I needed. They gave me a great deal on 2 cases of wine and worked with me to have the wine couriered to the hotel we would be staying at before we left for the cruise. While visiting Seattle I had to pick up a couple of bottles for a particular host and talked to a gentleman/manger/owner? The host has a heavy palate so I was looking for unique finds in particular a priorat. Picked up a 2016 Pissares priorat which opened up beautifully after 45 minutes. I then wanted to find something off the cuff and forgot the name of an Italian varietal in resurgence called cesanase, which after describing the region of growth he pinpointed to the 2015 ciolli silene worked perfectly as a precourser to the priorat. Overall a great experience for someone like myself who used to work in the wine industry. Why 4 stars? The selection while thoughtful and selective was not deep in competitive wineries but that was probably due to square footage of the shop. Still a good selection of regional varietals except South African (which I understand as the terroir of South Africa can take some getting used to) I would give 4.5 but yelp doesn't allow 1/2 stars read more

You know what? I haven't stepped foot in this shop yet. But I called today to send a bottle of wine to a very sick friend of mine, and they bent over backwards to make it happen. They showed compassion, interest, helped the best they could, found the best products and options, and tried to save me as much money as they could. I haven't been there yet, but I will. I think any person that was really into wine would appreciate this shop. They had so many white european options, which is the wine I really like. It seemed to all be in a pretty decent price range. I got 3 nice bottles for $44. Right when I walked in the guys behind the counter jumped up to help me and were so knowledgeable about everything they had in the shop. read more

Not just great selection -- it is, oh it is -- but great people. I had tourists in town last week and one of them very cleverly left her wallet on the counter...and didn't notice for 45 minutes. By the time she noticed, the shop had already phoned the number in her wallet (home number) and were waiting for her when she got back. Of course, my tourists thought they ought to celebrate with a bottle of wine or two to ship back; the email that the shipment was on its way reached her before we got to the Mariners game later that afternoon.
