The first thing you notice when you enter the store is that everything is hodge-podged together- the "shelves" are the type of shelves you put in your basement or shed to store boxes- definitely not what you'd use for a store display. That being said, it's new and I'm sure it's expensive to open a new store, so whatever- looks aren't everything. They have a decent amount of items in the store for the size. Good quality sketch pads and pens. My major issue is the attitude of the owner. The owner of the store took every opportunity to speak poorly of the newly closed art supply store that was next door. The owner worked there for many years and opened this current store after the other store closed. When I walked in the first time, the owner was in the midst of a conversation with a customer about how "crazy" the former store owner was, etc etc. That customer left and I was the only one in the store. Since I live in the neighborhood I asked her questions about her new store- I didn't know she had any ties to the former art store in the same shopping complex, so I got to hear how awful this other owner was, how she wanted to overcharge her for everything, etc. I came in again last week to grab a sketch pad and it was the same story- I could hardly believe it. All this effort and breath wasted to put down a business that doesn't even exist anymore. I was so off-put by it, that I didn't even buy the sketchpad. As a business owner in Frederick myself, I think it's pretty easy to assume that we should all play by rule #1: do not speak ill of others when representing your business. Period. I don't know the history between the two women, but that doesn't matter to me- it's just bad business to speak poorly of others. She could have taken the opportunity to explain how she was going to do things differently, what she will carry and her hopes for the store, etc etc- instead she decided to take the low road and insult a company that is out of business and of no threat to her store. While there aren't too many places in town to purchase artist supplies from an independent dealer, I won't be shopping here again.

I can even understand that it was forgotten entirely, although that brings up questions about the professionalism, organization, and accountability of the business. What I can't abide is that when they became aware of the mistake, they were unaccountable and dismissive. Instead of "we were busy, we'll call in a day or two when it's done", I much rather prefer and respect, "we made a mistake, sorry. We will correct that mistake asap." Keep that in mind 1hr away. When I got my phone back it worked fine for about a week and the phone screen would just not turn on, it would be extremely glitchy. So I had to make the hour drive back 4 different times to this place because he could never get it fixed. A total of 8hrs was spent on driving back and forth because of the damn issues. Only thing I will say ye did give me a discount on the last replacement. I just can't believe it took 4 times for a screen replacement. Owner is a super friendly guy, but idk how far his expertise goes in repairing phones.

I will say our artist was sweet and helpful, she offered suggestions on how to obtain the desired colors but she didn't walk us step by step on how it all works. That lipstick quickly became my favorite, so when I lost it I had to replace it! I stopped back in this past Saturday and they were able to pull up my old recipe and re-create it on the spot! Since I was there, I decided to get some help with my foundation issues. At the age of 41 I have just begun to wear foundation, and the goop I bought at CVS just didn't match my face. I walked out with a "Magic Wand" that really does cover my dark under eye spots without making me look wrinkly, custom foundation with SPF, some kind of fairy dust that makes my face look pore-less, and my two lipsticks. I also walked out with a ton of tips and tricks that taught me how to use some of the cosmetics I already invested in. All the products are natural, and the stylist explained what each was made of, how to apply, and why it was good for my face. (Their products follow form and function). That night I got carded (woo hoo!). The next day I went to a fancy schmancy restaurant in DC and the hostess told me my eyes "popped." Prices are in line with what you would pay at a department store makeup counter, but Smooch Studio products are CUSTOM and CLEAN! Plus its locally owned and such a fun place to visit.

Not sure of who this individual was or what to expect I was pleasantly surprised when we had our phone call where he had introduced himself, his credentials, and provided me detailed information of how his teaching works. I was really impressed by his transparency, genuine nature, and his passion for drums. Our first lesson was free with no commitment at all to future lessons. Miles was patient, amiable, and attentive during our lesson. This had impressed me so much that it had made me feel comfortable enough to commit for a month and the rest has been history. If you have a desire to play the drums and are not sure where to start taking a lesson from Miles is the best way to go!
