I've been here twice to get my hair cut and was definitely satisfied both times. I'm from the states but go to London quite often and the past two times I've been (in May & January), I went to Pimps & Pinups and thoroughly enjoyed my experience. First of all, it's easy to find, and about a 8-10 minute walk from the tube. It's in East London, which is a great place to go anyway, and is very close to the Spitalfields Market. Inside, the decor is pretty simple- black walls with a neon "Pimps and Pinups" sign, and all the stylist's stations illuminated by flourescant lights. While you wait, you are offered a complimentary drink (or two, or three)- ranging from wine to beer to tea or coffee. I've had both the tea and the red wine, and was pleased with both! I had both Mel the first time, and a lovely red headed girl the second time but I unfortunately can't remember her name. Anyway, both were great! They both listened to exactly what I wanted and followed suit. They were easy to talk to and made the experience relaxing and fun. They play great music inside as well, and the wait for a stylist is very short (or perhaps feels that way with all the wine I was drinking, ha!) read more

The space that hosts this salon is fabulous, from the mirrors to the chairs. The vibe is completely relaxed and you can tell that the people that work here have a true passion for their job. I NEVER spend money on haircuts, I consider it something of a cardinal sin. I own my own set of clippers so every few weeks or so I just shave my head and thats it. A few years ago, however, I decided to grow my hair and owning quite thick locks, they soon started to balloon outwards and curl rather than falling gracefullyabout my shoulders. I looked like a man with a particularly fluffy dog clinging to his scalp - not a good look. Determined that I should not shave off my hair after so much pain and heartache I decided to have it done properly and so on the advice of a friend I booked an appointment with Pimps and Pinups. Having never ventured into a hair salon before I was pretty apprehensive about what I might find but was pleasantly surpirised to find that I was immediately offered a glass of wine or a coffee when I arrived. It was only one in the afternoon but I opted for the wine which turned out to be tasteless trash but hey, it was free. I can't remember the name of the guy who cut my hair now but I do remember him being incredibly friendly if slightly annoying. We chatted for some time about this and that but after he mentioned America's Next Top Model the conversation kinda died off. However, he did do an amazing job on my bonnet. I never knew my hair could look that good or feel that soft - the beast had been tamed and forced into a tuxedo. My only real gripe was the price. Thirty friggin' quid for a haircut? I almost didn't want to write a review cause I don't want a place embarrassingly called "Pimps and Pinups" on my list of reviews. But I feel like people should know about this place. First, the good- the place looks fine, clean, good selection of magazines. The staff is really friendly, they offer you beverages and take your coat. The atmosphere is pleasant enough. But that's not really what you come to a hair salon for. I've been spending the last year and a half in London, and have gone to this salon maybe 6 times. Twice I had the same stylist, but the other times I had different ones each time. I get my roots touched up with bleach, which should be a really simple procedure. But it's been wildly overprocessed twice, leaving breakage and weird bands of yellow and white. Another time they left the toner on too long and it turned a weird color. There are wildly differing levels of skills between the various stylists- some are incredibly slow applying bleach, leading to the overprocessing and a 2 hour procedure. Others don't know how to mix the bleach and ask the shop assistants for help. After speaking to the stylists that worked on my hair, it became clear that there was a pattern- a lot of them were australian, living in London temporarily and working at the salon for the time they were there. They were young and didn't seem to have much experience, and didn't view the job as a long-term situation. Usually after seeing someone one time, I would find they no longer worked there when I went back. There wasn't much concern amongst individual stylists about building up clientele, even though the salon support staff was clearly focused on customer happiness. A couple of them told me the owner is australian, maybe he's just helping a lot of friends while they're in town? who knows. But I really wouldn't recommend trusting your hair to people who are inexperienced and have no investment in whether you return. read more

I never actually got my hair cut here but my flat mate always goes. A few weeks ago I had a hangover from the devil himself and she was heading out the house to get a snip. I thought I'd tag along, and we could grab some greasy delights to sort my head out after. The thought of facing the tourists of Spitalfields filled me with fear so I plonked my bottom on their comfy leather sofa and curled up to die. I've finally done it. I'm through with the Groupons and the Living Social deals - that I think in the end have really done a number on my hair - I've decided to just settle on a salon and stick to it - so may as well be the one that first captured my heart in London - Pimps and Pinups. Getting my hair done is a full morning event - Highlights, wash, cut - I may get there for a 10AM appointment but I'm not leaving until 12:30 - so it better be relaxing. I love the coffee cups, everyone is super attentive, and you really get a quality style and finish. Also - I'm not great at deciding on a haircut - and I like to get suggestions from people who can look at my face, my style and help me decide - and I've always gotten this at Pimps and Pinups. I hate my indecisiveness but I appreciate the suggestions. On the same token - my trendier friends go here with an idea of what they want and always come out looking great. Double win. read more

I am by no means a pinup. But I came to Pimps and Pinups anyway. A while ago, I would have complained that £40 for a haircut is a bit pricey, but after having too many fast and furious cuts at a lower price and too few cuts, in general, because of 'nice' salons in London charging upwards to £100 for a snip, I finally decided it was time to visit Pimps and Pinups. I got booked in for a cut on the day of my enquiry (alongside my sister, whom I booked in for a simultaneous cut. It REALLY surprised me that Pimps and Pinups was able to accommodate this request) with Lee. When I arrived, I was taken by the sleek and understated chic of the salon's décor. The staff was friendly if also hipstery. My wash was all right. Functional. Lee looked at the picture I brought in for inspiration and got to work. He made some small talk at first, but I'm pretty sure he understood that I was just as content to sit in silence as I was to make inane small talk. I'm just one of those people, I guess. My hair turned out great. Lee took his time (one hour) cutting it, which I really appreciate. As a woman with short hair, one runs the danger of getting a quick and hasty chop and sent on her way, unnecessarily robbed of her coffers. I definitely thought I got my money's worth. But, um, the music playing in that place had no business being as loud as it was. Minus one star. read more

The place is easy to find and looks like your standard "too cool for school" place from the outside. Going in they are friendly enough, and pleasant to talk to. The decor is cool and fairly uncluttered, but I was perturbed by the huge number of light bulbs there were - all around every mirror and all switched on constantly - making the environmental footprint of this place *massive*. Standard range of magazines in the reception area, again of the "we're uber cool" variety, and a bunch of friendly (and some REALLY good looking!) staff hanging around. Not too long to wait, and professional and courteous about seeing me. While others talk of hospitality and being given a drink (all my fellow customers had beers in their hands) I wasn't offered one at all. The shampoo was nice, chat friendly and functional, while the resulting haircut was good enough. After the cut I was given what I presume was supposed to be a hot towel to clean off the stray hairs, but it was actually ice cold; very poor attention to detail. Nothing to shout about, really. If you're used to paying £40 or so for your haircut in London this will be on your level for something OK, but if you're used to a lower price point this isn't a place worth trading-up for. When I was younger, I always wanted to try out different hairstyles but somehow never had the guts to just do it or I did it and it turned out just wrong. I tried henna, not on the whole head but just two broad streaks around my face. It looked bad. As soon as I tied up my hair I looked like a reverse skunk: blond hair and in the middle of the head dark-red streaks. Let's just call it bad. I decided to never try out weird stuff again. That was age 13. When I was 19 I decided "hey let's go from blonde to brunette" but as it often goes with DIY-dye it didn't quite turn out the way I had planned. My hair turned green instead of brown. "Washing" my hair with ketchup (for the red pigments that my hair had refuse to absorb) helped a bit, but that was definitely a low moment. That was the last time I experimented. Well a decade later I apparently did not get any wiser, just older, I wanted to try out something again. Since dip dying seems to be the fashionable thing to do and London is way more advanced in that kind of more daring fashion than Berlin I figured I should get this done while I am here. The colour? Pink! Pimps and Pinups has so many good reviews that I made an appointment with them. Unfortunately I forgot the name of the lovely lady fixing my hair, but I am sure that most of the people there are great. She understood immediately what I wanted to do and also took great care of my split ends, cutting not too much but just the right amount to make the hair look healthy again. The dip dye in bright pink turned out fantastic and I am so glad that a professional did it. The haircut feels great and I felt very comfortable and relaxed at Pimps and Pinups. The tea they offered me was also tasty :) Never again I will do stuff to my hair by myself. Never again green, never again skunk-style! read more

Now, I am not a big fan of the hairdressers. They never do what I ask and I always leave feeling disappointed and resentful. I walked into Pumps & Pinups to be greeted by a lovely Australian guy asking if I wanted coffee, tea, water, wine or beer. Although tempted by a glass of wine I sensibly opted for water. The interior has been painted black with huge mirrors and table across one wall and the washing station behind. The music is very lively and it is a fun buzzing environment with people generally talking making it a very relaxed atmosphere. Low comfy couches are in the widow where customers waiting, or in foils are relaxing and reading a good selection of magazines. What I especially like about Pimps and Pinups was that my hairdresser Shannele washed my hair which I think is brilliant. Most hairdressers have people specifically designated to washing hair and they usually do not want to be there and make it obvious. Shannele was such a fun full of life hairdresser, chatting about anything and everything. I asked to have split ends removed and my hair thinned out and that is exactly what I got! It was even dried curly just how I have it. Definitely recommend this place - they also do hair-ups for parties and functions etc. Not a pretentious Shoreditch vibe which you might expect of the area. read more

Pimps and Pinups is so damn cool - it's actually the reason I moved to Shoreditch. I can remember the day vividly - I had only been in London for a matter of days when a friend and I went to check out Shoreditch. Walking from Liverpool Street Station, we passed Pimps and Pinups and I immediately decided Shoreditch was the hood for me. It's been a year now and I haven't looked back. With the coolest-of-cool staff, complimentary beer and wine and the option to sit on the couch and flick through mags while drinking bubbly while your colour develops instead of stuck on the chair (Ladies, I'm sure you're hearing me there) is all on offer here. Now, I've always been happy with the results here, but I must add that a male friend went to get his hair cut a few weeks back and was really disappointed with the cut - he informed me he felt like a sheep as the hairdresser spent very little time on his cut. So yes, perhaps at time the staff are slightly more interested in their own hair than that of their clients, but it's still super cool and super fun. I am a fan! I have been to so many hairdressers over the years for cuts, colours, holiday chit chat, free booze, hair products, a change & a really satisfying head massage! I can probably count on my hands the good ones that were able to provide all of the above. Have to say: This place is up there with the good ones! Really nice decor - has a fifties glam vibe to the place. Staff are all quite young, funky & friendly. The place also seems to have a high number of Aussie hairdressers there (or maybe they have all been on shift when I have been there). I guess that may come from it being started up by Aussies. They also have a Salon in New York. The prices are not too extortionate - especially as it's London & trendy Spitalfields. So all in all, a big thumbs up from me! Me like & recommend!! read more

Nobody tells you that when moving cities, in my case countries, that you'll lose among the most precious services providers in your address book; the hairdresser. I have now lived in London for over 2 years and gotten some real shady haircuts for some good money. But, today everything changed. I did some research online and found Pimps & Pinups. My hair was too long for my comfort and I wanted a new look for myself. So, I said a hail mary and went to see Georgia today. I have to say I'm now a believer! Georgia was attentive to what, little, I had to say about the sad stylings of hair I had gone going on and of what I expected out of it, which was different, easy to take care of, a fresher look and something that could put life back in to my hair. She took her time, an hour to be precise, cutting, blow-drying, flat-ironing and then trimming my hair again 'cause she wanted to get it just right. I used to have long hair and was contemplating to cut it short for a long time but never had a courage to do so. One morning I googled this place, read the reviews and booked myself straight away. The guy at the reception and booked me in for the same evening. Right, now I know I don't have thick hair, but I love the colour and a little bit of waviness, but absolutely hate when the first thing a hairdresser would tell me is: 'Well...honey there isn't much to play with here...' I think it's just a sign of a complete unprofessional. Instead the hairdresser came up with two suggestions to introduce volume - layer a bit more or when I said I might like to have it short and showed a picture he said it's my choice (most of hairdressers' reply to 'Volume' was 'Cut short', I was surprised by non-pushiness!). And so I said - cut it short (bob-style), I also showed him a picture (Jennifer Aniston, in late season of Friends) - what I like and what I don't want to like (some girl in a magazine). He made it just the way I want it, not exact copy of Aniston, but which suits my face structure, my hair - everything! I must tell you, never in my life I left a hairdresser salon happy. It's always been either the blowdry but more often the cut itself (cut more than you ask for!) but this one I left so happy and stayed so until 8 weeks when my hair grew longer and I had to come back...but my hairdresser revived it again and I'm happy everyday - waking up in the morning and not bothered about blowdry, curling irons - it's simply looks amazing everyday...Will come back in 5 weeks! :) The salon might seem pretentious 'uber-cool' but all staff is nice and helpful, just make sure you don't sit close to the door when you're waiting, because it can get quite cold! The price of £40 I consider as reasonable - Toni n Guy and those boutique salons all over London would charge you more for a 'junior stylist' £45! read more

I've been coming to P&P for about two years now. I was initially terrified that it would be populated by ubercool, standoff-ish stylists who wouldn't listen to what you wanted and would send you out with a "directional" haircut. As it turns out, this was completely wrong. P&P is in trendy Shoredtich and the decor definitely reflects that, but the stylists are all incredibly down-to-earth and friendly. The clientele aren't all East London hipsters either. The salon says that all stylists are trained to the same standard (hence the flat styling fee), having tried a couple, I'm inclined to agree - the ones I've gone to have all been uniformly excellent. They won't push you into getting a certain cut, they're as chatty or as quiet as you'd like them to be, and they listen to what you want. The prices (£40 for women's haircut and blowdry) are actually pretty reasonable given that it's an upmarket London salon. All in all, highly recommended. If you're looking to get a short haircut, ask for Cameron - great Australian bloke who does fab cuts. read more

Serious kudos go to this hairdressers for achieving the triple whammy of speed, accuracy and charm. I didn't get off to a good start by being late for my appointment (which was at the end of the day), but when I called the receptionist she said they could fit me in if I got there in the next 10 minutes.....so a 10 minute sprint later and I showed up slightly frazzled and sweaty. I was pleased when no comment was passed on my terrible time-keeping and my stylist still greeted me with a smile and offers of some booze to take the edge of. Whats more, I wasn't sure what to do with my out-of-shape crop so I left myself in her capable and creative hands. A mere half an hour later I had a bob that actually suited the shape of my (admittedly, tiny) head and three weeks later it's still holding up - the sign of a truly quality cut. After almost two years in London, I think I've finally found my go-to hairstylist - a real diamond in the rough. read more

After rave reviews from my best friend I went along and was sorely disappointed. My colourist changed the concept half-way though without properly explaining what was happening, which resulted in a terrible result which was exactly what I had said I didn't want. On top of this, while waiting for the colour to develop I was placed on a hard wooden chair by the front door - beside an industrial-sized fan, no less. They kindly mended the colour with apologies however my visit was extended by over an hour as they were fully booked and had to repair mine at the same time as colouring the next client. My hairdresser seemed bored and spent more time looking at the other stylists/clients than he did at my hair. However, on a positive note, the Kevin Murphy products I bought were very good. read more

Pimps and pinups in one of those hairdressers that is the epitome of cool, it oozes charm from the retro chic décor to the beautiful stylists. The interior is painted black, large, well lit mirrors line the walls, and a huge fluorescent sign of the salons logo dominates the back wall. As you ease into one of the Barber shop chairs someone offers you a beer or a glass of wine before you relax with a head massage. The haircuts aren't bad either. I've been going to the same girl for over a year now and won't change, unless of course she moves back to Melbourne! I always feel confident getting a cut from someone so effortlessly stylish, if she looks so good then she must know what looks good on me too! In any case, I usually come out looking (& feeling) better than when I went in which has got to be a plus. At £40 for a cut & blow dry its not the cheapest place for a haircut but if you're after a more edgy look or just simply a good cut, I think it's worth it. read more

Pimps and Pinups offers a chilled out haircut experience with a number of interesting and professional young hairdressers. Greeted and offered a drink upon arrival, I was given a glass of wine while my coat was hung for me. Now my entire childhood my mother constantly told me never to get bangs. or fringe. or whatever you want to call it. So what did I do at age 20? I got bangs, of course. Since that day (as I've moved around quite a bit in the last year) I've been constantly on the lookout for hairdressers who understand the difference between cutting normal bangs, and cutting mine (which have a mind of their own and like to be treated a certain way). When I called P&P I requested to see a hairdresser who knew how to do razor cuts, which give a different look than normal haircuts with scissors. I had my hair cut with Ross, and he did a great job and was very pleasant to chat with. All in all, worth the 42 quid. tldr: shoutout to Ross for being a pro at cutting hair with a razor. read more

I have never left a hairdressers and not left feeling the urge to scream and cry because of the inability of the stylist to either listen to what i ask for or to be able to cut the style that i want. I don't have crazy, mad hair cuts so i'm never asking for a great deal. This all changed after my first experience at pimps and pinups. The whole experience was really enjoyable-from the offer of a beer to the gorgeous head massge/hair washing experience to the guy who cut my hair. It has a cool retro-chic atmosphere and the prices are the same as what you would find in any other hairdressers in London these days so why not have an extra special experience and get a free beer or glass of wine in with the deal rather than go to one of the chains that cut whatever hairstyle they fancy doing regardless of what the customer wants! read more

When I went to P&P the guy at the front who looks like Moby asks me if he can watch my bag for me while I get my haircut and so I leave it with him. Dean cuts my hair and does a good job. Two days later I realize I lost my bag. I was so relived to know I left it with P&P and I hadn't just lost it on the street. So I go back and ask Moby for it and he tells me someone must have taken it - I was clearly upset. I said, "No apology?" "Just, someone must have taken it???" He STILL never even said he was sorry for losing it - never showed any interest at all. Frustrated, I said - "You can't simply apologize even to keep a customer?" and he just grinned at me. Pimps and Pinups is a favourite amongst my chums and I. What I really like about this salon as opposed to others is that they charge the same amount regardless of which member of staff you have. Coolness at its best, the interior is styled almost like a glamorous backstage dressing room with lit mirrors and black walls. Very funky indeed. A refreshing change from the standard offer of tea or coffee, the staff here offer complimentary wine or beer which could be used as a tool to get you tipsy and thus opt for a wild and wacky new do. Having said that, the salon is uber trendy but the stylists actually listen to what you want and whilst loving any opportunity to get their creative scissors out, they are more than happy to give you a nice, normal cut. I'm always happy when I go here and my friend went last week and stepped out with a gorgeous 50's style bob that suited her perfectly. Like every other salon in a trendy part of London, it is rather expensive but the whole experience is worth it. read more

Pimps and Pinups is one of the ultimate East London hairdressers. It has these cool barber chairs, a laid back atmosphere and offers drinks like wine or beer. I personally opted for a tea when I was there since it was still morning time, but I am definitely planning to go for a stronger option next time I come here. The staff is very friendly and attentive to what you ask for. As for the cut, it wasn't perfect but close enough, but then again I have rather difficult hair. I was unfortunately born with long curly locks of untameable hair which I usually wear straight for comfort and ease, so all things considered, the girl who cut my hair did pretty well. It is a little pricey, but it's a lovely hairdresser for the young and cool things of London. read more

I went here with my wife because she saw some reviews on yelp and thought it would be ok to go with her. I was wrong. I should let you know first off that the people were really nice and the place was very clean. My critic is strictly on the stylist and the execution. I should have realized that this was not the place for me when I saw men with foil in their hair sitting around but figured there were plenty of "men" here getting their hair cut so I figured it'd be fine. I told the man that I didn't want clippers and zip...clippers up my head and then he did a very poor job fading my hair. I was annoyed and went down the street to Jack the Clipper to get a shave and didn't realize how bad it was until I got there and had them fix it up a bit. My opinion is if you want a proper cut go down the street and head to one of London's many barber shops and stay away from this place. After 6 months of wine-colored sombre, I decided it was time to change into something less warm (to match the London grey?). My goal was to get a black to medium ash brown / grey / purple fade. Obviously, this is not going to be easy! + I had a brief consultation with my hairdresser, Alice, when I booked the appointment in person. She suggested that we'll need two sessions in order to lift my hair, which is totally understandable. I noticed P&P uses all Davines products, which is a hug plus because they are free of ammonia, sulfate silicone, and paraben. + Alice was really quite sweet and made sure I was good with any drinks or bored. She worked swiftly and to my non-trained eyes, professionally. I was happy with my haircut & the colour results. At the end, she suggested I can forgo the second bleaching in order to protect the health of my hair and just go for a semi-permanent dye in the 2nd session. If not, I need to wait at least 4 weeks for another lift. - During the entire process, Alice really didnt ask any questions or tell me more about what she was doing. I showed her pictures of what some of the colours I desired and where I would like the fade to begin. She simply agreed. First, she did not suggest I should attempt to wash out my red colour more before the appointment, and she also did not attempt to do it professionally. She just began bleaching, then later telling me that the red always have a hard time coming off, even with bleaching. - While the bottom portion of my hair turned out well. She bleached my hair at a higher point than I indicated. So now it looks like I have some blonde highlight streaks on black, which is a look I do not need. I can only hope my hair grows our faster. - While she was brushing my hair, Alice lost the barbell of my piercing, total bummer. - Even though she was considerate of my hair in achieving my desired colour, she did not give ANY after care suggestions (using silver/purple shampoo, conditioner, masks). Maybe she will next time?? - Another small complaint I have are the hair washing stations. I have never been to a salon without reclining chair or leg rest. So it was quite uncomfortable sitting there, trying to get your head back enough into the sink, but also stay on the chair without twisting my back too much. Overall it took 3 and half hours for full-head bleach, toning, and cut (my hair was to the back dimples area), totaling £174. I think the price is reasonable because I really do have a lot of hair and you dont have to tip in the UK (I hope?). I will definitely be back here and update. read more

Admitted I'm a hair snob. For the last ten years I have had my hair cut at this really great hairdresser in Copenhagen (Shunt at Istedgade if you are in Copenhagen and in need of a haircut) and it is giving me great anxiety to get my hair cut somewhere else. My theory is only to get a hair cut from hairdressers with nice hair themselves. See, I am a snob! So I been looking for a new funky hairdresser in London. I went to Pimps & Pinups and paid 40 pound's. Which probably is expensive here but similar price to Copenhagen. The salon is very funky. It is kind of 1950ies rockabilly arty style. But the salon was really warm and really noisy. There is constantly hairdryers going on and really loud music. Oh, I must be getting old. My hairdresser (Katie) was very nice and gave me a really nice hair cut. So I will recommend the salon for the smartness and for a good haircut. If you on the other hand like to relax when you get your hair done and have a chat you should find somewhere else. Despite the heat and the loud music I might be back for another cut. AVOID AVOID AVOID Why is it so difficult to cut a head of hair!? I just spent £35 for a lawnmower treatment. I now look like Bert from Sesame Street. It all happened so quickly. After saying she would "keep it long" and then that she would "just use the clippers a bit for the sides, and then scissors", she shaved a crop circle round my head, leaving a wisp of hair on top. Not exactly what I had in mind. I did, however, get a Bud and a nice chat out of it---so, not a total loss. i walked into a few places and explained what i wanted: i was a dark red and wanted to go a shade or two lighter, getting a more natural looking colour. several places i went into said ''oh thats colour correction... so youre looking at £250 and more.'' um. ive never paid that much for hair let alone most other things. Pimps and Pinups is just by my work, so when i went there i was really hoping they would be a bit more reasonable. a sweet, stylish woman talked to me about what I was looking for, quoted £130 and booked me in a few days later. everyone was really nice, and the dye job came out exactally how i wanted. the second time around, i told her ''ok i want to go blonde - not quite yet, but in the near future.'' she said that was fine and suggested they start slowly and put some high lights in. when it was done, i wasnt really sure if i liked it, i thought it might be a little too fake looking, and they said that was totally fine, and booked me in to touch it up and make it how i saw it in my head. throughout the experience, they were super helpful and very reasonablly priced. read more

I went in with long hair and came out with a mullet. They cut way too much off and I ended up in tears; this is a massive thing for me since I literally NEVER cry. They refused a refund and offered me...ANOTHER HAIRCUT. (As if I want anymore off!) Great. Worst hair cutting experience I've ever had. Nice people and they CAN cut hair just make sure you emphasise ..and emphasise again how much you want cut off. I have been left with hair that is nothing like I asked and makes me feel terrible looking at it. It is going to take months and months to get as long as I want it :( read more

I have been going to this hairdressers for 10 years. Over the past year, the majority of the hairdressers left and have been replaced by proper amateurs. The salon has also raised their prices twice in the past 6 months or so. I was so upset with the last hair cut as the stylist completely ignored what I asked for. This place is shocking now, definitely save your money and keep your hair!!! read more

I went here for the first time on Thursday and had my hair cut by Joel. He was really friendly and seemed very knowledgeable about hair. He could tell that my hair had a natural wave, even though I'd straightened it and saw right away that the previous cut I had was slightly uneven. I think this shows that he pays attention and he seemed to genuinely care about the quality of the cut, as he was very attentive to detail. I came here to fix a really bad cut, and he did just that! I asked for an edgy cut and showed him a picture. He told me his opinion on the cut and how it would work with me personally, and changed it up a bit to suit me. He still made sure it was edgy and different, and I have now gone from hating my hair and being very upset, to being confident again :) And everybody is now complimenting the new hair. Overall, he listened to me, gave me personalised advice and was not pushy or intimidating. If you're looking for a drastic change, or a drastic cut, I would recommend Joel. The Salon also had quite a nice atmosphere. Smaller than I expected, and the music is a little loud. Only slight complaint is that the chairs are too far back! I have bad eyesight and do not wear contacts -- I wear glasses. And when I took them off, I found it hard to see my hair in the mirror haha. Will be going back in 6 or so weeks :) read more

I got half head highlights and a cut done by Alice. She really spruced up my natural blonde to a lighter shade while keeping it still looking natural. Cut was also excellent and speedy. Nice, funky interior. read more

I visited Pimps and Pinups last week and was horrified by the standard of service and the ineptitude of the hairdresser (Paul) and the colourist (whose name escapes me) My appointment was for five p.m. and, apparently the stylist had "popped out for lunch". The colourist wanted to colour my hair before the stylist had had a look at it, but I refused. Twenty - five minutes later, he returned and we had a chat. I then had my hair coloured and over to him for a cut. He really looked as though he didn't know what he was doing and I knew he was struggling by the way he was drying my hair (he can't dry wavy hair. Is he really a stylist?) All Paul had to do was go round and tidy up an existing style, but my fringe looks as though a toddler hacked it with manicure scissors. The colour is so dull and patchy. Their receptionist saw the horror on my face and didn't charge me (because of the colour). I rang up a few days later (to speak to the salon manager about the state of my hair), but was put through to Paul, who accused me of just walking out of the salon without paying, which wasn't the truth. When I told him about the state of my hair, he said "If you don't like it you don't have to come back". It wasn't a case of not liking a style ... This was a botch job. I can honestly say that this was the worst hair experience I've ever had in London. read more

I went here because of the great reviews I'd seen here. First things first, there are some things that are great. The guy at reception is a doll, he was really friendly and helpful. Also this place looks great, the decor is fabulous, really great presentation. All the stylists looked like hair models. The music gabe the place a fun vibe. On to the bad. The lady I had did not know how to cut my hair. I went in with very long hair and wanted it cut short into a low maintenance style. I told her exactly what I'd wanted: Something above the shoulder with some layers as my hair is naturally quite thick and wavy. She gave me a blunt cut that ended halfway between my shoulder and elbow. When she asked if it was okay, I said I wanted it shorter and I'd like layers put in. She seemed a little annoyed that I'd asked- plus she misheard me endless times because the music was so loud I could barely communicate with her. In the end I gave up, paid my money and left. My main problem is a serious tidal wave of style over substance. It's all very well looking funky and cool but I didn't leave with the cut I requested. They seemed more keen on asking me if I wanted a beer than asking me if I was happy with my hair. Having been to a professional hairdresser before, I expect them to understand a low maintenance style works WITH your hair. The haircut I got was impossible to maintain without endless blow drying, straightening and products. She gave me the cut she wanted to give rather than what worked or what I asked for, in fact more or less the opposite of what I asked for. I walked out into the humid London air, within half an hour it looked like I had a box on my head. Really disappointed. I'm going to get this corrected at a different place later this week, until then I'm keeping my hair tied back. read more

Unimpressed and won't be going back. Had my haircut there this week but when I got home and put my hair up I realised they'd left a pretty big chunk of my fringe uncut so it was longer than all the rest. Had to go back to get it sorted a few days later and again (like my first visit) had to wait 10-15 minutes beyond the appointment time. I'm still not impressed with the result. Yes the salon looks nice, yes everyone smiles sweetly, but if you value a good cut over a pretty salon, I'd go elsewhere. I won't be going back. read more

Yes, the place looks really cool and great effort has been made to fit within the Spitafield's arty-farty vibe. The lighting is dime (thanks, seriously) and a beer is included in the price. It has to be said also that that staff seemed to me incredibly approachable and unpretentious which is a rare virtue for the industry. .. However, I wasn't very pleased with the whole experience. Firstly, accept that beer, you are going to need it; the place either lacks air con or the constant use of hairdryers makes it really really hot and nearly unbearable. I was sweating, my hairdresser was sweating and my beer was warm within minutes. Secondly, and my main issue, my hairdresser seemed unable to style/conceive any hair style beyond the 50s and 60s which I find exceptional given the market's trend for senseless asymetric haircuts. Whereas I find this appealing to some extent, I specifically indicated that I iron my hair 'poker flat' as it is thick and incredibly rebellious and the hairdresser noted that my hair type was prone to gain incredible amounts of volume when blow dried only. She did not thin my hair out, not did they use an iron to finish my hair. I left the place sweating, itching and looking like a 60s' comedy housewife. This place is a prime example of style over substance and I could never recommend it to anyone. read more

Don't be afraid of the overly hip vibe. You'll still be accepted if you're not wearing some crazy vintage getup and aren't tatted up the hoo-ha. I had a great haircut here. Brought my photos, talked a bit, got it done. I'd definitely go back. read more
