I went in for a curly haircut. The owner Alex was my stylist. My hair turned out fine but, the overall experience was subpar. During the appointment, all I heard was stuff about her life, her husband (who she didn't talk to for 4 days), her kids, and anything under the sun that revolved around her. I just couldn't get a word in! I felt like I was her therapist instead of being able to decompress while getting my hair done. The setting inside was nice, the building had a nice feeling but, I did not like how she talked to her staff. You could see that there was a HUGE power dynamic and that mixed with her self-absorption did not sit well with me. Overall, the quality of work was fine at best. For the work done on my hair, I don't think the experience was worth it. She just rubbed me the wrong way. I hope you can do better. read more

I always LOVE spending time with Alex. She keeps up with the latest trends and techniques. I let her decide the cut, color, and style for my hair and have never been disappointed. I'm on the 50+ side of life, but she keeps me looking young and in style. I love that it's an eco friendly salon. That means there are no harsh chemical smells from any of the products she uses on my hair, or from any treatments the other Stylists are giving to their clients. The salon is always kept clean and orderly and they follow all recommended cleaning guidelines and limited number of people in the salon at one time during this crazy pandemic. Alex (the owner) rocks! I have somewhat curly hair that can lean toward frizzy or just-messy-not-curly if not cut right. Since getting my hair done by Alex, I routinely get compliments on my hairstyle. I never used to be able to wear it curly in the winter because of the lack of humidity, but now I can, even after sleeping on it or wearing a hat! Also, recently, I decided to phase out my color which had the potential to be extremely awkward because my hair is really dark, my whites are really white and all concentrated at the top center of my head. But she did this clever blending thing (like foils, but in reverse, I think) that eased me out of color without an obvious I-stopped-coloring-my-hair-two-months-ago line. She loves to educate her clients, so I've learned a lot about how to get the most out of my curls and about the mechanics of hair color. I am also quite chemically sensitive, and not only does Alex really understand this, she finds all sorts of ways to help with it whenever possible. She has never made me feel uncomfortable for needing special accommodations for this like other salons have. Also, the salon only uses products that are environmentally friendly, which means healthier for our bodies as well. Besides all that, I just plain like her! She's a good egg, authentic as a person, and you get the sense she genuinely cares about you. She has always been very fair in her business practices and I see how she trains her team. Although I've never had my hair done by any of them, I feel confident that you'd get great service by any of them because of the tone she sets in her salon. She takes a lot of pride in her business. Lastly, the salon itself has a fun and funky vibe. You are greeted in a friendly way and offered a drink the moment you walk in. Alex's super mellow pooch might give you a sweet welcome as well. I am new to NH and made an appointment online for a haircut at Pin Up after seeing some pictures on Instagram. I had not had my hair cut in at least six months. I like to have my hair cut with layers and angles of different lengths. In the past, I have had many haircuts without properly blended layers that have come out looking choppy and uneven. The experience I had with Nicole today was amazing! Nicole took the time to listen to me and look at photos of hair styles. Nicole did a excellent job creating layers and angles in my hair. I had a horrible experience years ago when someone chopped off all my curly hair into the ugliest Carol Brady mushroom top. Since then I've trimmed my own hair because I couldn't trust someone. A friend recommended this salon to me and so I finally decided to give it a try. The owner is highly trained in cutting curly hair and has trained her employees how to do so. Carissa was my hairstylist. She stayed patient through my scared bantering and took her time cutting my hair until exactly how I wanted it. I can now say I would definitely go back again. Heard so many great things about this place from people I knew and I even saw Shaunie's balayages done on instagram! They looked awesome so I was super excited to get my own balayage done here, especially before I went on vacation! So, I showed Shaunie a picture of the dirty blonde ashy balayage I wanted, and she said I would have to come in a few times to get that color I wanted. OK i guess I thought? She showed me the "worst case scenario/darkest" color it would turn out to be by the end of my session, which was like a dark blonde color? I was totally okay with that. But, after an hr and a half, my hair had legit only STRANDS of a chesnut brown in it that you could BARELY see unless you directly put at those strands. It was not even a balayage. You couldnt even tell the difference. I was so sad :( She said "Yeah, it came out much darker than I thought it was going to turn out. Now that I know how your hair works, Ill use a lighter color to dye it. Make an apt to do that for next time." Me-Ok, how much would that be next time? Shaunie-Maybe $120-$150. Ok, I thought. That meant she wasnt going to charge me for today since there was literally no change in my hair color and it was not even the "worst case scenario darkest color" she showed me. But nope, I was wrong. She charged me $100!! $100 for a few strands(not a balayage) of chesnut brown in my hair. I was shocked and so sad because that was my $ i saved up(broke college student probs). Anyways, thank the lord for this angel named Elena at haute coiffure in Boston for being a real homie and laughing in my face at my hair when I told her my hair was supposed to be a balayage, and for fixing my "horrible messy strands"(Elenas words, not mine), and giving me the ashy blonde I wanted in ONE SESSION!!!! ONE SESSION PPL!!!!! I LEFT THAT SALON IN 3 HOURS WITH ASHY BLONDE HAIR GOD BLESS THAT WOMAN. Now, dont get me wrong. Shaunie seems like a good hairdresser. She was nice.We were cool and had ok conversation. She gave me a decent layered haircut. And ive seen the balayages shes done on others and they look great. BUT, if you got ASIAN hair or THICKKKKK hair for that matter, DONT DO IT!! DONT GO!! I mean..you could go if you wanted to walk out of this hair salon 2 hrs later with the same hair color and $100 poorer. Ive never had such a bad experience with a salon in my life. I Made a yelp just to warn my thick haired homies not to go because they'll have ZERO idea what to do with all that hair. But they wont admit it and they wont be shy to charge you $$ for "all the work they put in(even if that work was horrible and that was their fault). Hopefully you guys stop charging people $$ when you guys are the ones that messed up because that is just not right. Anyways, still sending good vibes your way Pin Up Hair Salon. It can be difficult to find a great stylist in this area for a modern cut with just the right amount of edge. I found Heather thanks to a personal recommendation, and she is fantastic. From the cut which took me back to short hair, to the first color change in several years, she has been consistently creative and amazing -- always listening to what I want and then bringing her professional opinion to bear on the final result. Plus, she is a very cool person to spend an hour talking to. Reasonably priced, easy parking, great funky space in a converted mill in downtown Dover. Can't recommend highly enough! read more
