It's the perfect spot for a quintessential Minnesota lake cabin experience, thoughtfully designed to bring large families and groups together while enjoying everything the lake has to offer. Every year, they continue to make small upgrades that improve the experience, which keeps us coming back. The beach area is fantastic - soft sand, no steep drop-offs, and tons of water toys for all ages. Our toddlers loved playing with the sand toys, our smaller kids couldn't get enough of the lily pad and water trampoline, and the teens had a blast paddle boarding and riding water bikes. Huge bonus: life jackets are available for kids as young as two! The cabins have that cozy, knotty pine charm and - since 2024 - each one now has its own strong WiFi. But what we love most is that there are no TVs, which means more family time, less screen time, and memories made together. Booking was super easy thanks to the resort's online availability search. Communication was excellent - I received updates via email and text - and online check-in made arrival day a breeze. Our cabin was even ready well before the 4 PM check-in time. But instead we were turned away at the gate because the ENTIRE park was closed for a concert. The attendant was none too polite about it either. "Oh, you can just come back tomorrow"... well, we can't. And probably neither can the cars behind us from Tennessee and Kansas. This is a big new event, and we had no notice about the closure. Really bundled this one. I have no interest in ever coming to this park.

First and foremost, I've heard from an overwhelming number of guests how much they enjoyed the grounds and the beauty of the area, so much that they didn't mind the 4hr drive from the cities. The natural beauty of the area is emphasized here: native species surround you whether you are at the pavilion area, the campgrounds up around the loop, or even the open area of the RV park. There are also pretty little "hidden" places all over. Our photographers were thrilled about all the places to take photos- rock chairs, opennings in the woods, flowers planted here and there, sweet antique-looking benches, etc. The best part of Black Lantern though is the owner, Annie. She is just incredible. She was so thoughtful throughout the process and she was pretty much a wedding planner. She didn't mind talking to me about how weddings are put together and gave me contact info for decently priced vendors in the area. That was especially helpful as I am from Minneapolis and was contacting all the expensive vendors- oops. Annie took time to understand our style and vibe so that she could best help me plan an event that we wanted. She offered so much of her time before we even met to answer questions. She also has the uncanny ability to pop in at the right time- every time I needed her, she was there. She helped problem-solve for those things you don't plan on and offered a helping hand whenever it was needed. She chops all the wood and builds things, including amazing heart-shaped fires. What a badass woman! There was only one thing that was a disappointment at first- but then ended up being a blessing in disguise- we couldn't have our guests camp at the "campsites." Darn MN regulations. There isn't running water close enough to the loop to allow for campfires. Instead, we had all our guests camp in the RV park. It worked out wonderfully. This also allowed us to use one of the campsites as our ceremony site. Best decision we made. It couldn't have been a more perfect location for us. I didn't want to get married indoors, or even standing on cement. The clearing in the woods was large enough for 100 chairs and standing room for the other 60 people. The forest provided a breathtaking backdrop. Even a year later, when wedding-talk comes up, other people still bring up what an amazing venue Black Lantern is.

It is within walking distance of restaurants and pubs, and there is a lovely public beach right across the street. Now, this is not a Holiday Inn or a Doubletree. If you are looking for a room that is modern and offers conveniences and luxury, this is not where you want to stay. BUT, if you are looking for a comfortable and quiet place to sleep that is within walking distance of fun places along a beautiful lake and you don't mind that it is outdated (in a charming sort of way), minimalistic, small, and basic, then this place would suit you quite well. And the prices are pretty decent (i.e., you get what you pay for). A few things: they leave you only one roll of toilet paper (maybe ask for an extra when you check in, I be prepared to ask for more), there is NO shampoo in the room, there is no alarm clock (most of us have cell phones or other devices that have alarms, though), no phone. All in all, we enjoyed our stay and would probably go back.
