It's on a lovely tract of land on the edge of a national forest, so fresh air is abundant. The staff is not power hungry, but laid back like Troy, the sleepy town in which the prison is located. Finding an agreeable Sargent to assist with a bunk switch is usually no problem, and shakedowns are relatively rare and painless.The yard plenty of benches and shady areas to kick back and relax, along with full basketball and paved volleyball courts. The inmate population is relatively small, so canteen lines were usually a breeze, and chow call is not the ordeal one can find elsewhere. Perhaps the finest feature of SCI is the visitation area, which is across the parking lot in a tree covered grass area that felt much more like a park than prison. Spacious enough to get a stealth handy is one scores a spot in the right area, with no one the wise, especially if the more lax guard shift (they both are, pretty much) is on duty. The interior is kept in good repair, and I'm happy to report each inmate has his own plastic chair, which can be stationed at the foot of one's bunk for convenience when not in use in a day room. Six foot high lockers double as partitions between bunks, which I found helpful for privacy and blocking the wind from the industrial strength fans posted on the walls. Even cells in the hole aren't too bad, as they feature sizable windows from which one can gaze and out recall what partial freedom felt like. These windows can also be opened or closed with the help of willing passersby. TV rooms were abundant, featuring 32" flat screens and plenty of viewing options, including two different football games at the same time on weekends. On the flip side, the radio sucked, both the station options and indoor reception. Give the above raves, one might wonder why only three stars instead of five. North Carolina summers with no air conditioning, that's why. Unless a nigga is lucky enough to sleep in the Mod, it's hotter than a brick oven most of the time. Also, the toilets are jail-style, i.e. seat and bowl all-in-one. In other words, my low hanging scrotum edged the top of the water line, and no inmate deserves this, regardless of his crime. Another problem is no hot and cold knobs for the showers -- merely the push button, one temp fits all. While the water wasn't set to scalding by any means, it still sucked. The remote setting of SCI, while pleasant for air quality, proved to be a double edged sword. Work release options sucked, and community volunteers were few and far between. Basically, unless one was lucky enough to have a good AA sponsor there weren't many guys getting a change of scenery while wearing civvies. * While I give SCI a hearty three stars, if you're taking about the Mod experience, it's an easy 4+. The only people that's nice is the receptionist and the lady in the mail room. The rest of em you might as be nice to a rat as opposed to be nice to them. They got custody levels mixed. Which is a no no it's a close custody camp. Used to be for women recently changed it to male. Again avoid this place if you can help it.

As I walked by snagging some pictures I saw an inviting sign so decided to walk in. Free to the public and did the self-guided tour. It was such a nice detour and so glad I did. The old Library inside, rotunda, and old Senate chambers were especially cool to see. I tried imagine of what it was like in those halls in the mid-1800's. Our son started Camden Military Academy this past school year as a Junior and will be returning…read morethis year as a Senior. CMA has changed his life and I do not say that lightly. His academics have risen dramatically I believe due to the small class sizes, very available teachers who really care and will offer individualized attention and advice that is specific to your son, tutorial sessions, study hall, and endless opportunities to succeed in academics. My son's Christian faith has become his own. He takes it seriously and talks to other cadets and encourages them to take their faith seriously and attend religious opportunities both on and off campus. He has succeeded tremendously in leadership due to seeking out opportunities and taking advantage of opportunities presented to him. He loves the camaraderie and "brotherhood" that he has found at CMA. I am so grateful for the TAC officers that have acted as "local parents" offering mental and emotional support, guidance, and mentoring. My son has turned into a man who has direction, focus and a future. He is a different person than he was when he walked through the doors and my husband and I are so proud of him. And he is so proud of himself.

Our learning and behavioral health team all recommended one school as the only solution he could change his entire life and it was at Camden Military Academy. They were right! I mean, they're not meant for tourism or public visits but if…read moreyou are family/friends coming to see your soldiers and/or attend a graduation of some sort, or maybe you're a solider transferring to Bragg and want to see what it's like maybe this will help. It's Huge! Fort Bragg is one of the five largest military bases in the US. It's basically it's own town and if you are a soldier coming here for a long term station you may want to think about shipping your vehicle over or you're going to have to make friends real quick to ride to formations and such with as they are often a good long walk away from barracks. For family/friends visiting, I'd suggest staying at a hotel on base such the IHG hotels as they are just as nice as most the ones in the town of Fayetteville, in a lot safer location, and close as you can get to your soldier. The barracks here are standard military barracks, cement floors, fans that look like they'll fly off the ceiling but definitely work to cool you down, simple kitchens, pretty gross bathrooms, a window view of the building next to you, etc. There are definitely different levels of quality depending on rank and if you get lucky enough to move up to newer rooms. Being next to a PX, gym, or dining facility is a perk as well and pretty common for many. There's really not much to do on base for visitors. You will have to either Uber/Lyft (Lyft is cheaper generally) onto base or if you are driving yourself, go to the visitors center to get a pass of some sort which is at the front gate. You can bowl on base with your soldier, shop at the px or the mall behind the IHG moon hotel, and get some work done at Starbucks (one of the few places you don't need a military ID to spend money at). Other than that, I'd recommend going to "downtown Fayetteville" and having lunch at The Fried Turkey Sandwich Shop, getting a cupcake at The Sweet Palette, seeing a movie at AMC 14, and visiting the Airborne and Special Operations Museum - all off base. Make sure to check the hours of the museum as they are a little funky. Overall it's a pretty standard military base. I've met some incredible soldiers that work/train there and heard some pretty terrible things about the civilians that run the cafeterias, which disappoints me. The hours for these military cafeterias are ridiculous as well, closing multiple weekends at a time and choosing random hours to shut down during the week. Personally, if I could change anything about this base, it'd be the cafeteria staff's attitude/respect for the soldiers and their open hours, as the soldiers are required to pay hundreds for a monthly meal card and can't even fulfill that with the amount of times they close up. That's just not cool, looking forward to change.

They were courteous, kind and patient. The biggest issue is the large amount of traffic coming into the office & parking. However, today I suffered none of that. Office was quiet with few people & one little girl maybe 3 years old was speaking to everyone who walked in. Just so precious & quite possibly the only person today that some would have been kind to them. I'm thankful. I'll add it's clean inside and the parking lot is also clean and maintained.
