This review is not about the church itself and its service, but the outreach program they…read moreorchestrated to solicit volunteers to serve on MLK Jr Day. I'm always looking for more opportunities to volunteer, so I decided to sign up with volunteerhou.org, which is a website that connects you to different non profits and causes that need volunteers. Looking to spend my MLK Day serving others in rememberance of Dr. King, I noticed an opportunity in the afternoon with this church called Bayou City Backpacks. I read up on their mission and cause and thought it would be a great idea to go. Sign up was simple--all I had to do was be on time. Location was pretty easy to find and there was plenty of parking for volunteers. I did arrive a few minutes after 3, but they were just getting started with the event, welcoming volunteers, explaining the setup, and modeling how to complete the bags for disbursment to the schools they service. Setup was really organized and was well thought out, giving the smaller kids a less taller assembly line to create bags and also cards and crafts for everyone to make notes to place in the bags. Melissa Peter, who is the Program Director for the organization stated that they ask the kids what they like to see in the bags. Many kids say they like the notes (you know your heart strings just got tugged a little), so they had templates, paper, markers, etc for volunteers to make notes for the bags. This a great idea because kids do get restless of doing monotonous actions. Having the arts and crafts really allows everyone of all ages to participate--especially the little ones. Because there were so many volunteers, we finished the 1300 bags they distribute each Friday early. We even started on the Presidents day weekend bags as well until we ran out of product. Volunteer time was probably a solid hour versus two as stated on the website. Everyone was so friendly and willing to help for a great cause. They even have Volunteer opportunitues each Friday from 8-11 distributing bags and creating new ones for the following week. One of the parishoners also mentioned that she volunteers on Sundays creating bags. They even have a community event on every Third Thursday in the evening for one hour creating bags for kids who might go hungry if it wasnt for the vision and generosity of this organization. If you live in the area and would like to know more about how to partner up with this church and give back financially or physically, check out the website https://holyspirithouston.org/bcb/ I will definetly be volunteering again with Bayou City Backpacks in the future.
