Best of the best! We loved staying here -- what an absolute treat. We stayed in the Rosebud Cottage and it was exactly as described. We especially appreciated the detailed hiking info in a binder in our room, it helped us select some really awesome hikes more easily than just online info alone. Breakfast arrived in a picnic basket each morning at 8:45 and was delicious, and they even surprised us with some special treats. There are fluffy cats roaming the property and there is a back deck where you can gaze out at the cow pasture and mountains - very relaxing! We felt right at home in the very comfortably appointed cottage. Pricy, but worth it! This was within reasonable driving distance of the park, it's near the "central district" for hiking that's near the Skyland and Big Meadows Lodges, for reference - prepare to drive about 20 minutes to the entrance and then 10-20 more minutes for various popular hikes in the Skyland/ Big Meadows area. We didn't get to hike old Rag this trip due to rainy weather, but the Bearfence rock scramble was a great alternative once the weather cleared up, since I was wanted to do a rock scramble! Oh, one heads up, there are pretty limited options for eating out in the area and the yelp reviews are... very optimistic. Choose cautiously, maybe ask Wiley and Hank for advice. This is my most favorite B and B ever! Hank and Wiley have got the business down to a tee. They're such personable inn keepers. The inn is quant and the rooms are clean and well maintained. We stayed in the Walter Rogers room which is on the first floor. We had our own bathroom with a shower and bathrobes hanging on the back of the door. What a nice touch. Breakfast was fantastic. Fresh seasonal fruit, egg and sausage puff and freshly made sticky buns for the first morning. Spinach and sausage quiche, fresh seasonal fruit and homemade chocolate chip banana bread for our second. Fresh coffee and juice accompanied the meal. There's even a coffee tea and sweets bar available whenever you need a pick me up. Outstanding! We're looking on the website to book our next visit. Can't wait to return. read more

A home away from home. This little cottage that we stayed in was nice and relaxing. I was able to sit on the deck and watch the sunset, along with the cows and bulls that I saw. This was a cozy quaint place. This was the ultimate tiny house. A little kitchen, it didn't have a stove, but that's because breakfast was sat outside the cottage every morning in a picnic basket. The bed was comfortable I could see myself down there on a cold winter dat snuggling with my wife. The bathroom was nice with all it's features. Everything in this small space and it wasn't cramped. I enjoyed sitting in the chair with a drink in my hand, just relaxing without a care in the world. This is what dreams are made of. They also delivered sweets to us. Absolutely, without a doubt, the BEST B&B experience we've ever had. The breakfast was amazing, inn keepers were friendly and accommodating, and the surroundings were serene and relaxing. We stayed in the Mark Ruffner room. We enjoyed our visit so much, that on our way home, we booked another trip for April. :) Can't wait to see Hank and Wiley again in April. Where do I begin?? If there was a Bed and Breakfast magazine (who knows maybe there is) Hank and Wiley would be on the cover over and over. These men exemplifies southern hospitality. They were helpful in every aspect of our getaway. One of my husband's co-workers recommended this bed and breakfast and I wish we went sooner. Nonetheless he decided to take me for my 50th birthday (a few weeks early) so that it doesn't interfere with the rest of the family festivities. We rented a cottage and Hank brought breakfast out each morning in a Picnic Basket (how cute is that?). Anyhow, Wake up with a hearty appetite because it was delicious & they will make sure your belly is plenty full. We chose the horseback riding package and couldn't have been happier. Hank and Wiley had it all planned out for us, all we had to do was show up. They gave us all the tips on where to stop by in town. It was almost like having a personal tour guide in our pocket. Luray caverns were awesome as well. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and perhaps a jacket (if you're prone to be chilly). The cave temperature is lower than outside. Keep in mind...when you descend down those steps...the ascend will be the same. A truly wonderful experience. The setting is beautiful, the house is charming, and the rooms are cozy and comfortable. But the couple who run it make it amazing, with an attention to detail that is really astonishing. The breakfasts are just fantastic, but my wife and I are kind of picky, though we try not to be difficult. She's somewhat lactose intolerant though not bad, and I just don't like eggs, and I only drink decaf coffee. I had a cup of Keurig coffee the first morning, but didn't drink much because Keurig. I didn't say anything because I don't really need coffee- it's decaf after all. The next morning they brewed a pot of decaf just for me, and it was great. They made food with Lactaid for my wife, and just generally bent over backwards to make sure we enjoyed everything. (We loved everything, and I have pretty high standards.) That's the kind of attention to detail and effort that sets Hank and Wiley apart. But I don't want to distract from the fact that the food was just superb. Every bit of it. They also have us recommendations on where to go, what to see, how to get there... Truly, this was better than the best BnB we've been to, even in Napa California. As the threat of negative wind chills blanketed the airwaves, we ventured out to Luray from our urban haven. We had planned this weekend as a birthday and valentines getaway, and a little cold weather was not going to get in the way. We were greeted by warm hospitality and a wonderful toasty atmosphere. The Inn was decorated with an abundance of antiques, tastefully arranged with delicate lighting. Hank and Wiley took very good care of us and genuinely served our needs. Breakfast in the morning is served in the inn as one group seating as great opportunity to meet others staying there. The breakfast consisted of delicious cream cheese stuffed french toast with side of fruit. The second morning we had a savory sausage and egg quiche with a fresh apple crisp on the side. We enjoy bed and breakfast accommodations for the small scale attention and random opportunities for socialization. In the evening, we met and exchanged stories with fellow travelers in the cozy living room as we sipped hot tea and indulged on homemade mini cupcakes. We were treated to homemade red velvet cake for valentines day as we settled into our bedroom for the night. The accommodations were comfortable even with the 50 mph winds rushing past the old farmhouse. Although the fireplace/heater in the room was a bit weak, we enjoyed snuggling under the cozy quilts on the bed. We woke the second morning with beautiful sun shimmering off the snow and throughout the house, and sadly began our trip back to the city. Overall, we rate this place a very high "Excellent." It is easy to see why Piney Hill B&B gets all of the 5-star reviews. They have been in the business for 16 years and they know how to provide a relaxing and enjoyable experience for all. read more

My husband and I stayed here a couple weeks ago for our honeymoon. It is a fantastic place just outside of Luray. Far enough away for some peace and quiet, but close enough to town. Hank and Wiley are two amazing guys that keep the place and they made the stay absolutely wonderful. They were friendly, accommodating, and extremely hospitable. My girlfriend and I stayed at this bed and breakfast for a weekend visit to the countryside. It was as good as you can get! There are five total rooms: two outside in separate cottages, and three in the main house. The rooms are well priced, very clean, and with basic amenities like TV, separate bathroom, and free wi-fi. The B&B owners are very attentive and helpful. They sent us several emails to coordinate our breakfast food and drink and also to make sure of any food preferences or allergies. They also texted us to check our arrival times. The location is near many attractions. Luray Caverns and Luray, VA are nearby. Skyline drive and all the trails and overlooks at Shenandoah park are also less than 30 minutes away. The owners have us a guide map that listed all of those attractions, plus nearby restaurants, stores, vineyards, and other sites. We didn't need a GPS the weekend! Everything was close by and easy to get to. Of course, a B&B has to have good breakfast, and Piney Hill had the best. We had a special french toast with a fruit parfait the first morning, and a sausage-egg breakfast cake with toasted fruit bread the second morning. Amazing! It was just a perfect weekend for us, and we'll definitely come back soon! read more

Hank and Wiley are very welcoming. My fiance and I were impressed by their attention to detail from check-in to check-out. When we came in, they acquainted us with the area and local restaurants. We took two of their recommendations, and both were great. We stayed in the Emma room and it was very well appointed and remarkably clean. They provided us w/ hotel amenities and beyond (including wine glasses and an opener!). For those of you looking for a short romantic stay and can't afford a cabin, this room had the addition of an electric fireplace, and an in-room bathroom. We didn't use it, but they offered an amazing movie selection. The outdoor space is beautiful, and includes a large porch w/ seating and a great backyard. We did not bring a bathing suit, but we also saw that they had a hot tub. For your convenience, they provide snacks and candies in the dining area (and also some candies in the room). They also provided complimentary water and sodas. To top everything off, breakfast was delicious. They served us freshly made sticky buns, sausage quiche, and fresh fruit along w/ orange juice and coffee. The level of service is outstanding, and Hank and Wiley are two really awesome hosts. My wife and I stayed in a cottage at Piney Hill bed and breakfast back in May for our anniversary. This was the best B&B that we've ever stay in, and we've stayed in a few. Hank and Wiley did an outstanding job on making our stay warm and welcoming. The breakfast was amazing! Best I've ever eaten. There is plenty of hiking close by if that's your thing, or you can just hang out at the cottages. The views at the cottages are amazing, and everything is decorated with style. A Little Piece of Heaven That's exactly how we would characterize the Piney Hill B&B, a little piece of heaven tucked away in the hills near Luray, Virginia. My wife and I both said, we cannot remember a time in our lives and any of our travels when we were so pleased with a place that we have stayed. This is our idea of getting away from it all and to have some peace and quiet and serenity for a couple of days. There are not enough words in my vocabulary to tell everything about this place. You will just have to see for yourself. Believe me, it's everything that any advertisement you see for it says it is. From the time we pulled up in the driveway until the moment we left, we were just so overwhelmed with this place. We were met by Hank and Wiley, the proprietors of Piney Hill. These two guys make it just what it is, a wonderful place to stay. Your breakfast will look like it just came from the pages of Southern Living. We stayed in the Rosebud Cottage. From the back porch, there is a panoramic view of Massanutten Mountain. Just absolutely gorgeous. There's a screened in porch on the front where my wife and I sat in the evening enjoying our wine. A wonderful and enjoyable place to stay for a nice getaway. I noticed that there is one review that said it was terrible. All I can say is that I think they must have stayed at one of the local pig farms, because they could not have stayed here and write a terrible review. If there was a 6-star rating here here on Travel Advisor, I wouldn't hesitate to give it. read more

You won't find a better breakfast in the area - theirs is superb. The innkeepers are among the nicest and most caring folks you'll meet. The most perfect B & B I've been to ever; Hank and Wiley have ruined me for every one to come. We stayed in the cottage--a 500-ish square foot studio apartment like stand-alone building with a neat stove-like heater that has the ambiance of a constantly burning fire but that self-regulates the temperature and doesn't get smoky. The cottage backs up to fields complete with the occasional grazing cow and stunning views of the mountains. Even though it was cold outside, we went out on the back porch to take in the view with our morning coffee. Both the cottage and main house are gorgeously appointed--like something out of a magazine. Breakfast was incredible--different every day, delicious, homemade and with interesting twists and lots of variety. I'm more of a foodie and my SO is more of a "pot roast and potatoes" man yet we both were just blown away by our breakfast baskets. Which brings me to another nice feature of the cottage--they leave breakfast in a basket on the front porch so you can sleep in if you'd like and don't have to awkwardly fumble for a robe just to get your meal from someone waiting at the door. When we woke up, we opened the door and it was there waiting for us. If the hot dishes get cold, there is a microwave in the cottage kitchen to reheat if you need it. It's all those kinds of little details that sets this b&B apart. My SO mentioned to Hank that I had some food allergies--and they went out of their way to accommodate them. On one gorgeous full-moon night, we slipped into the hot tub and enjoyed the fresh country air. My SO also sprung for the couples massage--a surprise that Hank helped keep--and it was a top-quality experience. They had fantastic recommendations for lunch and dinner spots, helped my SO get a vase of my favorite flowers in the room, and were somehow warm and available yet we never really noticed they were around. We cannot wait to head back in the summer or fall to do some hiking and stop back to check out some of the little shops we discovered. read more

My boyfriend and I stayed with Hank and Wiley for the weekend to celebrate his birthday and our 1-year anniversary. It was the perfect romantic weekend. The house and scenery are beautiful, the house is quiet and even though there were two other couples there, we could easily be alone when we wanted. Breakfast both days was amazing and provided lots of energy for the activities ahead. We went kayaking down the Shenendoah for a beautiful 8-mile trek, and rested with a bottle of wine in the hot tub that evening. Best weekend in a long time. read more

We stayed for two nights in the Emma room for our first anniversary, and were extremely pleased with the place. PROS: Wiley and Hank's personalized, considerate care and careful attention to detail; the beautiful property and mountain views; modern shower with great shower pressure; historical house with charm; cleanliness; great couples massage option (we passed out for hours afterward); delicious, personalized breakfast; great advice on local activities. It feels like a warm and welcoming home, with hosts who take the extra effort to accommodate you to the very best of their abilities. CONS: It can take a little while to drive to certain attractions, but it's in the middle of the mountains and the place is worth it; at least one of the rooms in the house has a hallway bathroom (but ours was ensuite). My husband and I hands down would reccomend this B&B as the best of the best. They set the standard for service/location/food to the point where everywhere we go now is on the "piney hill rating" The food is fabulous, local ingredients and different everyday. The guys know where to go and what to do and will make sure you get the most out of every experience. Location and house are beautiful. They helped my husband plan his proposal here and he said they were very excited to help him make it special (they even gave us a card the next morning at another dliscious breakfast) the small barn with gifts is very cute, picked up an ornament to remember the weekend by. As far as things to do nearby, more for the adventurous type, we hiked and went horseback riding, not for those looking to do a lot of shopping/antiquing because you are in a rural area.
