Got a last minute reservation for Friday night and we were warmly welcomed when we arrived. The vibe is comfortable and not pretentious. 94% of the menu items were sourced from NC that night. My fiancé and I thoroughly enjoyed PinPoint. They had outside seating set up, and we were able to get a table immediately. We interacted with several staff members throughout our dinner-all of which were extremely personable. The drinks were amazing (one and done!). The Hanger Steak stole the show though. I was super tired from my flight from San Diego. I say reviews for another place but when I went there the line was over an hour long. I stumbled into PinPoint. I wasn't expecting the experience I was about to get. I assumed it would be they typically tourists place, looks nice but has cheaply prepared food for the masses. I was wrong! Second time I've been there. This time for a Fathers Day meal with my son. I questioned the choice but my wife made the res. This place is as pretentious and mediocre as it is grotesquely overpriced...NYC pricing and substandard food. The steak tartare for $22 tasted like it was put on the plate straight out of the raw meat package. Virtually no seasoning, should have had a quail egg or something like capers etc but had nothing . The full 3 oz was laughable. The local grouper had a 5 oz overcooked and dry filet for $38 and the octopus was one mealy tentacle that did not taste good and had bad texture for $32. That being said, the waiter was attentive and pleasant. Took a long time to get the entrees even thought the chef told the waiter 4 minutes when he noticed how long we had been waiting. It actually was almost 15 minutes later. They waiter comped our first round of drinks, in fact, he was a cut above the establishment. read more

Went here with girlfriends - first lets say this is the place no man ever wants to dine, and if they do they'll constantly be asking "where's the meat" or "that's what I get for $28" This is a small portion, all About the decorative plate fair - with a lot of flavor but not a lot to go around. My husband and I kicked off our wedding anniversary weekend with dinner at PinPoint. It is located in a gorgeous old building downtown. Our drink orders were taken, and we were brought the most delicious, airy bread with balsamic vinegar. I ordered the vegetable plate and was completely mesmerized by the culmination of flavors. The offerings vary with what is available and in season. Fried okra, black rice from Anson Mills, and smoked eggplant were some of the tastes presented. My husband ordered a seafood pasta dish. He was a bit disappointed with his food because the seafood and sauce was skimpy compared to the amount of pasta that he received. Stopped into Pinpoint the other day at 9:52 pm, (Google said they closed at 10:30) and after we sat down and ordered our drinks and appetizers, the owner informed us that the kitchen closes at 10 and that they usually liked to get the last orders in around then. I hate going into places late right before they close, and after we were informed about the kitchen we asked about the time they closed - still assuming it was 10:30 and were told it was indeed 10. We felt bad, and very quickly finished our appetizers and left. I am writing this review because our appetizers were awesome (especially the squash soup) the staff was awesome, our bartender was awesome - and everything was awesome. I know it is a thankless job back in the kitchen, I know its a thankless job cleaning up the bar after all the customers have left, and it would have been far, far easier just for the staff to say they were closed than invite us in and ask us what we wanted to drink or if we wanted to start with any appetizers. But they didn't, they easily could have but they didn't- and this is why Pinpoint gets 5 stars. read more

We had oysters on the half shell, softshell crabs, hogfish and catfish at our table and ALL were superb. Desert was really nice too. My partner and I each had a fabulous dinner last night. I had a foamy rutabaga soup together with ribs that were brined,smoked and baked The other dinner consisted of a pear salad w a blue cheese dressing followed a very tasty catfish placed on top of very creamy grits We shared a couple of tasty cabs that were complex but at the same time did not over power the dishes We finished the meal with a licorice flavored tawny port and a marvelous carrot ginger trifle This restaurant gets more innovative and better as it matures read more

It's my restaurant in Wilmington and I'm quite a stickler on consistency at restaurants. Everything is a hit (especially the fried chicken dish and oysters). They are super attentive to gluten and dairy allergies when my friends and family came to visit, we've gone over 6 times at this point and will always be a favorite! read more

I had noted on the reservation that we were coming in for an anniversary dinner, and they brought us out a few flutes of champagne. The dozen oysters on the half-shell were nicely presented, if fairly small, but tasted good and were well prepared. 4.5 stars so far. My wife had the grouper which, very sadly, was badly overcooked. It looked like it was a nice piece of fish, but it didn't have a chance. The sauce on the plate was tasty, and the cauliflower well-cooked. The plate was monochromatic. My New York strip was badly overcooked as well. I ordered rare to try to get medium-rare, and ended up with medium and medium-well portions. The potatoes and carrots seemed to have been holding a very long time, even though the restaurant was uncrowded. Oddly, they were unevenly cooked as well, with the potatoes being punished particularly badly. There was a spoonful of caramelized onion mixture on top that had gone over into a jelly texture. Poor execution was the theme with my dish as well, with the only non-brown item being a tiny sprig of a fresh herb that looked lost. PinPoint is definitely not a fancy place, but it's comfortable, there are no TVs, and it's not too loud early in the evening, which works for us. Our server was excellent, and when the check came back incorrectly drawn up, it was fixed quickly and without a fuss. Although the restaurant is open seven days a week, my wife noted that going on a Monday is usually a mistake. This time it was, and it was a very expensive mistake. read more

This review is for brunch. Dinner prices seem a little pricey, but based on the service and food quality at brunch, this place is 5-star! I felt like our $50 bill was very reasonable for two alcoholic beverages, an appetizer, and 2 entrees. The butterbean hummus is one of the best things my husband and I have ever eaten. We can't wait to try to replicate it at home. My French toast was light and fluffy and crispy on the edges, and I would have thought to combine almond and citrus, but it was delicious. My husband thought his Croque Madam could have used a little more Mornay sauce, and the ham portion was small, but still declared it one of the best brunches we've ever had. Overall, it was a hit, and the service was great and unobtrusive. We will definitely plan to try the dinner menu when we return to Wilmington. read more

Stumbled onto this restaurant while walking on Market Street. I was greeted with a smile and warmth. I sat at the bar as the restaurant was busy. The bartender was very attentive and made sure I was enjoying myself. For dinner, I had the most wonderful Hogfish. It was moist, flavored well and paired with vegetables that just complemented it that much more! Kudos to the chef!! This restaurant has been on my list of new places to prowl so when I saw the yelp promotion of a $50 gift certificate for $25 dollars I figured we would give it a try. We arrived on Friday night at about eight with no reservations. Big mistake! I wrongly assumed that because it was new they would not be very busy. No joke it was a mad house! Pinpoint is located where Delux was back in the day. Since then the building has changed hands multiple times. The bar is long and the dining room is open with both booth and table seating. All the art inside is for sale and it is out of this world. The hostess told us it would be about a thirty minute wait for a party of two so we put our names on the list. While we were waiting I noticed an empty two top by the door and asked if we could sit there. The hostess said she wasn't sure and then left to find the manager I presume who said they did not seat that table because of space but that there was two open spots at the bar. I am always fine with eating at the bar but I do wish the stools had backs. Anyway we sat down and were immediately acknowledge by the bartender who welcomed us and said he was busy but would be with us shorty. About five minutes later the gentleman who sat us returned with water and took our drink/food order. The bartender followed up again trying to take our drink order which I repeated and let him know that someone else had already put them in and magically they appeared. Despite the business being very busy our appetizer of tuna tataki came out promptly. It was delicious! The cut and color of the tuna was beautiful. The flavor/texture pairing of grapefruit, soy and popcorn was a palate pleaser. For dinner we ordered the porcini crusted flat iron which was brought out about five minutes after our appetizer. In my opinion our meal was coursed out perfectly. The entree we ordered was the most expensive on the menu but well worth it. The steak was tender and cooked exactly to my preference. My wife said this was the best meal she had in Wilmington! Our bill was only $45 after we finished dinner and drinks so we were forced to order dessert to get our bill over $50 and leave a tip via credit card. Since we were full we got the Key lime pie to go which they packed with ice... strange but greatly appreciated. We had no problem using the gift certificate and the meal was incredible. As we were leaving the bartender took a minute to thank us for our patience and understanding that they were busy. Great support staff here! I think the bartender was supposed to take care of us but he was too busy so I am not really sure who our waitress was regardless we enjoyed the meal and were well taken care of. Brunch experience: We got up on an early Saturday. They open up at 10:30am and we came in right at that time. We were able to get seated immediately and were met with kind people from start to finish. The restaurant is open with beautiful wood floors and an inviting long bar. We were seating in the front of the restaurant and it's a nice space to have a nice conversation and it was relaxing. They brought a small slice of coffee cake. It was delicious and a nice snack while waiting for our main meal. I had the eggs Benedict on a potato latkes with trout and a side salad. I ordered bacon and got trout but, it was amazing! No complaints here. My husband had the omelet with summer squash, peppers, cheese and a side of hash and a salad. He had coffee and I had a mimosa. Everything was high quality ingredients and very fresh. It was the right amount of food to satisfy our hunger and not over plump us to the point of being uncomfortable. I look forward to trying this restaurant more. I am actually bummed we waited so long. Monday they have 1/2 off their oyster menu and they suggested making reservations by ringing them directly. We can't wait to go back next. This restaurant is relaxing, comfortable and everyone was very inviting and personable. That I really appreciated and the food was delicious. These two things will keep us coming back for more. These two things are what make a restaurant stand out above the rest. Thank you for a perfect Saturday brunch! Dinner experience: We came in on a Monday night for their half off Oysters. I can't say enough about how awesome this place is. I like the menu is diverse and fresh. The beef tar-tar is my favorite! I had a bib lettuce salad with a dill pickle dressing that was heaven with bacon. My husband had a leaf wrapped Grouper. We tried the oysters cooked three ways and the unique flavors did not disappoint. I couldn't resist from ordering dessert. I had the key lime pie with blackberry. It was heaven. I love the food is not heavy. We got to eat so many different flavors and left completely satisfied and not hungry or completely stuffed you can't walk afterwards. Best restaurant in Wilmington for us at this time. We have had great experiences both times. I love this place is comfortable and relaxing. This place was great. Some really well executed dishes. I liked the butter bean hummus. We tried the pickles as an app and not everyone liked it. They pickle a lot of different things, including strawberries. Catfish was great as well as the Sheepshead fish dishes. Brownie dessert finished it off. Service was spot on and knowledgeable. We had a very enjoyable dinner here on a Saturday night. It's in a reclaimed storefront that's narrow and long with very high ceilings about a block and a half from the river. The space has a pretty big bar to the left, a couple of tables right in the front windows so you can feel like you're on display, then some hightops and regular tables along the right wall. Our server was very chipper and efficient and a pleasure to deal with. She recommended a refreshing cucumber cocktail that Mom loved. Their cocktail menu is tiny (three selections), but of course they have a full bar and can mix lots of other things. The wine list appeared to be quite reasonably priced and had plenty of options. Everyone enjoyed their food, which included a great bleu cheese board with apricot jam and sorghum-roasted pecans; a seafood spaghetti with clams, mussels, shrimp, and soft-shell crab; a special of shiso-wrapped mahi on a potato-leek hash, and blue crab fritters with fried okra. No complaints, except to nitpick that the breading on the okra tended to break off completely when cut. Dessert is a smaller affair like the cocktail menu, but the house-made ice creams and sorbets (including amaretto apricot) were delicious. The chef/owner came out to the table during dinner to discuss the meal, which is a nice touch and personalizes the place. The only drawback was the noise when the restaurant became full. There are no soft surfaces to absorb sound, so it became oppressively loud. But still, the food is good and creative enough that I would highly recommend it; you just may want to try a weeknight or earlier in the evening (they have a $25 three-course prix fixe now that's offered 5-6:15). read more

Pinpoint, located in historic/downtown Wilmington, NC, was my pick for a small dinner as the chef was a James Beard Semi-finalist this year for the South East. As I wasn't very hungry, the staff/kitchen (and Bartender Olivia) worked with me to allow me to still sample a couple of dishes! My favorite was the octopus and pickled shrimp wrap- these are a must get. I also enjoyed the NC butterbean hummus with its little green tomato bites. Sadly, I did not love the ricotta dish as it was too sweet and missed the balance I would have liked. Overall, I would definitely go back and try more dishes.... but Definitely the wraps again! read more

My first visit to Wilmington started with a great dinner at PinPoint. A simple, but warm restaurant in downtown Wilmington, with lovely local artwork throughout. We had a large group which led to lots of tasting of many great items. We started with house made pickles and beets and oysters for the table. All were a hit. For dinner a friend and I split two great fish dishes: the crusted cornmeal catfish with buttermilk potatoes and brussel sprouts, and the tilefish special with mashed potatoes. Both were wonderful, quite different preparations, so it was ideal to sample both. For dessert, we tried three of the ice creams: dandelion, honey and grapefruit. Really solid and beautifully prepared. We also had the carrot cake and the peanut crunch dessert. I think the peanut dessert and dandelion ice cream were my faves. Lots of beautiful dishes with lovely flavors, and great texture variations. A great spot, I highly recommend! read more

My husband took me here for our anniversary dinner. I had the catfish with grits and Brussels Sprouts. He had the pork shoulder. We had the butter bean appetizer. It was so light and flavorful. The first thing we noticed is that the food was not over salted as many of the local restaurants we've been eating at have been. They don't need to do that here bc they are using great ingredients and herbs and the flavors are there. The desserts were delicious as well. Meyer Tart and Brownie Sundae with Dandelion ice cream. My husband and I came here for an early anniversary date and we were very impressed! The service was top notch, food was unique and delicious, and the atmosphere was both relaxed and romantic. Our server, Matthew, was very helpful with all our questions and made excellent recommendations. We tried raw oysters (Duke) for the first time (1/2 off on Mondays) and the bar has been set very high now. Soo good! For dinner we got the Hanger Steak and the Snapper entrees which we're both incredible. The presentation was beautiful and the portions were the perfect size. We'll be back next time we're in town!
