Presently, with additional support of David Zwirner, one of my favorite galleries in NYC, "Lisa Yuskavage: Wilderness" and "Rose Wylie: where i am and was" exhibits captured my attention. The main building is set up like a small town consisting of salon, drug store, dental office and more. Filled with authentic items. Then you walk outside to the outdoor town. Homes from many different years, school house, hotel, sheriffs office and many more. The kids will love it! So many items I'm sure they have never seen before. Such a wonderful educational experience. They do offer tours but not on the day we were there. The kind lady in the office said please come back to her if we had any questions. This is a must visit!

Unbelievably authentic 19th and early 20th century, wild west museum located in Montrose, Colorado…read more This museum is reconstructed as a full historical village Comprising not only actual building structures of multiple Hotels, Saloons, residences, General Store, Medical, Dental, Pharmacy, Blacksmiths, Sheriff's office/Jail, and livery among 26+ structures in total. Additionally, one will not be dissapointed as each building interior is fully furnished with thousands of time period artifacts, furniture, fixtures and supplies. I was amazed to view actual US currency as well as guns and rifles each worth in the thousands. This Colorado Museum is maintained by a non-profit entity, has a reasonable admission fee and is ranked as a top 10 State museum must see. Accordingly, when visiting the Black Mountain of the Gunnison National Park South Entrance make this an enjoyable and interesting stop afterwards.

The museum was 50 degrees inside and they do have community jackets that can be borrowed during your tour. There is also a gift shop where you buy your tour passes.

Being antiquarian print collectors and art lovers, we spent much time browsing and chatting with Lucille. What a history there with her parents and Salvadore Dali, another artist that we collect! We could have spent hours chatting with Lucille. We purchased an Audubon edition print and of course, who could resist a gorgeous Salvadore Dali print to add to our collection. If you are ever in Gunnison, go out of your way to visit the gallery! With over 200,000 pieces to choose from, if you don't find something, I would be shocked!! Gunnison is very lucky to have this vault of world history in their little town! :)

They have also restored other buildings in town and continue to strive to maintain the ghost city for future generations. Please help them by visiting the museum (if it's open when you are in town) and by donating to their important and wonderful cause. I enjoyed viewing this majestic building from the exterior. It once used to house the courthouse in Buena Vista. Also the wooden mammoth sculpture exhibit in their front lawn is a reminder of the excavation and archeological site found nearby.

Our greeter/docent, Jane was a walking encyclopedia of fun facts and interesting stories about Aspen. It was easy to visualize Aspen's growth and how it evolved from humble beginnings as a poor mining town to the Aspen we all know as the place that only the very rich can afford to ski and play and live.
