I particularly enjoyed reading about the first discovery of gold near Idaho Springs and what lead to the Gold rush. I also enjoyed seeing how mining techniques evolved over a short period to reveal and extract even more and more precious minerals. I learned about florescent rocks. On the top level are the hall of fame members who made significant contributions to mining, like John Wesley Powell, US Army officer, Grand Canyon explorer, professor and of course geologist; and Ed Schieffelin, who discovered silver and founded the town of Tombstone, Az, which at the turn of the last century was the largest town west of the Mississippi River.

The views out the train windows are spectacular as your train winds around the mountain and you get to see a waterfall and the river rushing by! There is free parking that it can get crowded so get there at least 30 minutes early maybe more and buy your ticket ahead of time as they sometimes sell out day of.

We got off to a bumpy start here as there was a mechanical issue the day prior that canceled our initial reservation. Thankfully, they were able to move some stuff around and make it work for us on our second day in town so we could enjoy the snow ride, which was high on our list as a bunch of Southern California girls who never see the snow. We arrived all bundled up but the blankets in the sleigh were much appreciated as well. After our sleigh ride, they offered to give us a tour of the mine as well, which was an unexpected but nice gesture.

We had the best time and spent over two hours checking everything out. It is the coolest place for all ages. If you like the Wild West then you are really going to enjoy this. So many buildings and artifacts to check out. Such a great way to learn the history of Leadville. The associates were very friendly. There was even an associate that walked around outside in case you had any questions. There are scavenger sheets for the kids. There's even a video that you can watch in one of the buildings. Make sure to climb around on the caboose and train engine. Are you tired but haven't got to see everything yet? Your ticket allows you to leave and come back during the same day. Such an affordable price for such a fun adventure. If we are ever in the area again we will definitely be back. Keep up the great job!!
