Rick really cared that we have a great experience while in Ketchikan. The Honda Odyssey van was spacious enough for the four of us. Rick had pairs of binoculars and waters for us. He took us to a place to see black bears catching and feasting on salmon. We saw Bald Eagles and just missed seeing an orca. While on Creek Street, a black bear emerged from under a building to eat blueberries and huckleberries. We ate a few too after the bear moved on. Rick took us to a totem pole park and gave a great tour and history of totem poles. We took many tours while in Alaska and this was by far the most enjoyable one. You can't beat having a private tour with a guide who is proud of his town and wants you to have a great experience.

The entire trip was three hours. It was educational, funny, enjoyable with lots of interesting information: the history of the boat, the area; the ability to hold different types of crabs and other sea life, eat some fresh crab, all provided by the exceptional crew of the.Alutian Ballad. We saw a ton of eagles by Annette Island, and were given plenty of photo opportunities throughout the trip. Really cannot say enough positive things about the trip, and the entire crew, specifically, David, the big D, and Captain Ron. Also, the nicest restrooms I have ever been in on a boat, other than a cruise ship lol I would definitely go back on this trip again in a heartbeat. Thank you to the entire crew.

They each had a lifetime of experience fishing for crab in Alaskan and had a tremendous amount of knowledge to pass on to us. They were both extremely kind and made the experience truly one to remember. We traveled to Ketchikan on the Disney Wonder. This tour is perfect for adults and families alike. Although we chose this tour because of the connection to the TV show "The Deadliest Catch", I do not think knowledge of that show is necessary at all to enjoy the experience. His boat was docked RIGHT at the cruise dock and he met us there as we debarked from our Holland America ship. What service! Compared to the other ridiculously expensive excursions in Alaska, this was a great deal b/c we only had SIX people on our private charter and for about as much money as we would have spent to go on a cheesy "tour a crab fishing boat" excursion! The process was new to me, trolling for salmon, so rather than stand with a pole in your hand the whole time, all the poles are hooked up and trolling. We drew numbers as we headed out of port, and when the pole jerks up, if it's your turn you grab ahold and start reeling! Captain Don was enthusiastic and his excitement made me feel like we were definitely going to catch some salmon today, and catch we did!!! On the way back, you stop at the processing center to have you salmon cut up, smoked, etc and shipped back home. As he said, "I hate fishing!!! .... I like CATCHING!" haha. I caught three salmon during our 4 hour trip (which Captain Don actually ended a little bit too, how awesome!) and my husband caught two. A mix of pinks and silvers salmon were caught by our group of 6. Captain Don was very personable, told funny jokes because he feels it's good luck. You can tell he's good, b/c two of the people on our charter had fished with him multiple times, every single time they came back to Ketchikan! Repeat business says something! The boat itself, well, it's a fishing vessel. It's not fancy. The interior cabin is a bit musty so I preferred to stay out on deck. Captain Don offered snacks and cold beverages. There is a "head" below deck on the boat, but it is teeny tiny ! We saw a bald eagle, but unfortunately no whales. He took us by some totem poles on the ride back to port. Just an excellent day!!!! Be sure to dress in layers WARM b/c towards the end of the 4 hour trip, the winds kicked up and a storm was brewing and it got quite quite chilly!

During our Alaska trip , we had our Ketchikan excursion to this Lodge…read more U board a speed boat at the pier & then out, beautiful scenery they even feed the bald eagles pretty cool to watch. When we got to shore they tell u a bit about the history & location u walk around a bit , also head into the Tongass rain forest for a short hike very cool the Forrest! Nature is truly on display here, aside from the bald eagles, there were a few Deer's walking around. After the hike then it's feeding time & we were served an Alaskan boil all part of our excursion, this was a lot .. plenty of seafood , it was very good! They offer beverages & even a sweet treat at the end of the meal, good cookie. This lodge is beautiful , nicely kept, the staff was very nice & friendly , we had a gorgeous day the day of our excursion which we came to find out are not common so happy we got the beautiful day because it gave us some excellent pictures & a lifetime of memories this was a great day definitely worth the visit.

My husband and I booked this tour thru our cruise ship…read more We took a bus ride from our ship to a little dock where we boarded a boat. Before we went on the boat, our tour guide Dalen threw some fish into the ocean and we got to see maybe 5 or 6 bald eagles fly out of the nearby forest and scoop up the fish. So cool! These birds know what's going on. Then Dalen took sailed us to a nearby island where we were able to view an eagle's nest from the boat. And he threw some more fish into the water and the eagles came down to eat again. Then we were off again were we passed some secret stuff (I won't say it here but it was quite interesting). Dalen was great at teaching us about the different types of salmon, information about bald eagles, and facts about what we were seeing along the way. He had a lot of pun-ny jokes that every dad would love. The boat ride itself was very smooth even though the boat was moving very fast. The windows are also open during the ride so you get a lot of fresh air. We finally got to the lodge and saw some deer just lazing around in the front. We had a short tour thru the nearby forest in back of the lodge. The whole path in the forest is made out of sturdy wooden planks with only a slight incline. We got to see some really tall trees and at the end saw a really huge red cedar? Tree named Chester. It was fairly cool that day and there were no mosquitos. We ended our tour with a crab boil feast at their outside tables with a great view of the ocean. You sit at these round tables where they dump all of the goodies of steamed crab, mussels, sausage, corn, onions, potatoes, shrimp, and garlic cloves in the center of the paper-covered table. Each person has their own tongs to grab what they want and you just leave the scraps on the table. Everybody has their own crab cracker too. They go over how to crack and open a crab leg to everyone. They also give you melted butter to dip your food in and lemon juice and cajun seasoning on the side. They also come around with a basket of buttered toasted bread and it was heaven to spread a soft garlic clove all over the top and eat it. They had some bread leftover so of course I ate some more. While we ate, Dalen played a trivia game so if you listened really good to his tour, you'll know all the answers. My husband won a cute pen and some fake snow. They also had lemonade, bottled water, tea and hot chocolate to drink. At the end of the feast we had the most amazing soft, gooey cookies from the oven. Be fast, I was lucky enough to get the last cookie. You can wash your hands in their outside sinks and use their tidy and clean bathrooms. They also have a tiny cozy gift shop if you want a souvenir and a world map where you can pin where you are from. The only thing that was kind of awkward was that we had to eat at a table with 6 other strangers. Thankfully, we were all friendly and polite but I had to watch myself from growling over the last crab leg and our table pretty much cleared all of the food. I also wish there was more crab to go around; I think that's why I was able to eat so much delicious bread. The outside sinks also ran out of soap so I just washed my hands in the bathroom sink instead. It was a nice ride back and I kept thinking that my dad and bro would love to go fishing here. I would come back for the cookies!
