Little did she know that there are deaf potters (even a deaf blind one!) that have managed to use the wheel without any issues. It was disappointing to see that she was inflexible in learning more about how to work together to communicate effectively and safely. Her correspondence was very rude! Everyone at the shop was super nice, they have a bar area that you can get food/drinks at for all the waiting people wait at to fill out forms and before the tattoo. They are EXTREMELY hygienic, Chu spent like 10 minutes wiping down and sanitizing her equipment and area before tattooing me and everyone (staff and guests) was required to wear masks. Glad they were being as safe as possible especially with COVID and monkeypox going around. The shop itself is super cool. Huge windows and it really has a nice open and modern concept to it. Great view of the city and very relaxing to get tattooed there. The tattoo turned out great for me! Was super fast, only lasted about 1-1.5 hours and Chu was super talkative and talked to me the whole time. She was very good about aftercare directions too and even didn't give me the second skin wrap since it itched for me on a previous tattoo. That definitely has helped as this tattoo is significantly less itchy that my previous one. Definitely would come back to get another tattoo from her. Bonus: I am vegan and they use vegan products and a vegan process! Super cool and that helped put my mind at ease about that stuff. This shop is amazing and absolutely worth your time!

This art/performance/event space is in the heart of Jamaica, Queens. Meaning, you're right next to…read morethe train, the market, and the local culture. Street vendors, loud music, so many bright colors and intriguing sounds. The space inside is quiet. The staff are super nice and helpful. I went for JCON, which was a free sci-fi/horror/fantasy convention. It wasn't anything fancy, but there were a lot of independent artists there and I got to meet a lot of interesting people! Some people even wore homemade costumes. There were several pieces of really cool art displayed in the center's small exhibition spaces. JCAL puts on many events throughout the year, from jazz concerts to children's festivals, as well as other music events, arts/crafts/jewelry making workshops. They have rotating art exhibits. They also have art classes and educational programs. A true community space, made for members of the community, in a lively enclave of Queens.

The Queens Museum was a delightful surprise! We were just going to visit to kill time between…read morelanding at LaGuardia (another delightful surprise!) and our check in time in Midtown Manhattan, but it ended up being a highlight of our trip. The Queens Museum is in the same park that the World's Fair was held in both 1939 and 1964. The park is fantastic and it's fun to take photos in front of the Unisphere. The entry fee for the museum is optional but I paid the suggested $8 per head and thought it was worth it - the museum does not have a lot of exhibits but what is there is super interesting! The main attraction is the giant Panorama of the City of New York. It's a continually updated map of the city with buildings and even tiny scale model airplanes taking off and landing. The lights in the room brighten and dim to simulate day and night, and during nighttime, the lights in the buildings come on. Only Far Rockaway was left off the map due to space considerations. I am a map geek, so this was heaven for me! They also have a room with memorabilia from both World's Fairs, and map of the 1964 World's Fair that is similar to, but smaller than, the Panorama. There is a great exhibition on Tiffany glass lamps. Not only was the display of lamps absolutely gorgeous, the information about the history of the glassworks in Queens (a factoid I was not aware of!) and the process for making the glass was fascinating. Less interesting to me, but fascinating to Larry, was the relief map of the NYC water supply system. The Queens Museum is absolutely a great stop if you are in the area!
