I've tried their mussels - delicious, the plaice - scrummy, and the Moroccan tagine dish - super flavoursome. Another of the menu highlights is the fillet steak which comes out on a hot plate so you can finish it off exactly the way you like it and choose your own seasoning too. In the summer it's lovely to sit out in the garden and during weekends the bar area quite often has live music too. The only downside is that the service definitely slides with very large parties as they have a habit of serving smaller tables first. I popped back for lunch on another occasion and had the jerk chicken salad. It took a while to arrive (they were pretty busy) but when it did it was delicious and only cost about a fiver. A much better meal than you could get from most other local restaurants at the price. So if you're in Hastings any time soon, check out Porters.

Either that or you can eat it on its own which no one has ever done in the history of hummous! My friend ordered a celery dish, which also came in a tasting size at £12 a portion. It's a place for chatting, for speculating, for catching up with old friends. The music is from a stack of CDs behind the bar and was an excellent mix of pop and soul last night. I've only ever been to the bar, but with its cask lined walls and comfy armchairs it makes for a really cosy place to relax and explore the vineyard's excellent selection of wines. Moreover, if you visit on a sunny day you also have the option of sitting outside on their adjoining terrace, which has stunning views of the Kentish countryside. It may not be the cheapest place for a drink, but I've found Chapel Down's wine to be consistently good and it's definitely well worth a visit. Of course, if you can't find a nice, sober person to drive you there and back and you don't feel like hiking, there is a shop downstairs which sells all of their wines to take away. It also does tastings and sells a range of deli products which are perfect for a snack or a spur-of-the-moment picnic in the countryside.
