This place was absolutely terrible. I stopped and ordered two Pitas for the road and a fatoush salad. The flavor of the iceberg overpowered the small amount of tasteless chicken and lamb. The salad was equally terrible in a different way. It was drenched in dressing and had a pitiful amount of salad or maybe it dissolved in the dressing. Falafel is deep fried....not how this place makes it! Taking a falafel out of the freezer and putting in the microwave is not how the dish is served! Where is the crispy outside and soft middle? Not here...it's just a squishy flavorless ball of chickpeas. The spinach pie is awful as well...a doughy nightmare! Where is the phyllio dough? No feta inside either! Chef Ramsay would scream! Pita Gourmet is a gem in this small town! The location on Main Street makes it an easy spot to find. There is street parking. The staff is friendly and helpful and always explain the dishes. My favorites include the fattoush salad, hummus, gyro, spinach pie and chicken gyro. All the house specials are amazing and made fresh daily. Stopped here randomly while headed back from a road trip to visit my bae's fam in the good old US of A. I ordered the mixed veggie plate, which came with falafel, tahini, pickles, salad, hummus, baba ganoush, and side of pitas. The food was very tasty and fresh. The hummus was so creamy and tasty. We came in on a whim and it wasn't a bad choice. I had the Kufta wrap. It was flavorful, juicy and the ratio of filling, meat and pita was perfect. My wife had the Gyro wrap, also cooked well. We were the only customers there, so the ambience was a little strange. The staff lurked a little bit and it was quiet, but neither to the point that it made our visit bad. I get the feeling they may do more take out than eat in meals. I'd go back if asked or in the mood for a wrap. read more

When I lived in Cortland, I used to come here a lot. The tabouleh and hummous are awesome. The chicken curry special is also awesome if you get it for lunch. By the time dinner rolls around, I've gotten it and it's really dry and lacking. I think they make one batch and use that til it's gone. I used to usually get a chicken sandwich as my go-to. The complaints I'd have... With a broad, but simple menu of appetizers, platters, wraps, sides, and desserts, this family-run business churns out what might be the very best food in the City of Cortland. If you're ever coming through, make sure to stop and indulge. Even after leaving Cortland and moving to New York City, I haven't found a Lebanese restaurant more humble or a Middle Eastern restaurant that makes food half as good. The best way to dine here is with a big group of friends. Start off with a large mazza combo and make sure to get hummus, baba gannush, and tabouleh. If you desire, the falafels are good to swap out for one of those too. As an entree, any of the kebabs over rice are amazing, but the vegetarian platter with falafels is also a definite win. Make sure to fill up on the most amazing baklava you've ever had anywhere and take a cup of rice pudding home. The wraps (literally all of them are amazing), but are literally the best as in-the-go food for lunch. Follow the restaurant on Facebook or Instagram to keep up-to-date with what specials they have, as curry chicken Wednesday's and fish Friday's are super popular and the food is delicious (I know, not a surprise after what I just told you). I ordered a large Greek salad for take out. What I received was a very small pile of lettuce with next to nothing on it. Extremely disappointing. The gyros were very overpriced for mostly lettuce, 2 half slices of tomato, small amount of onions, 2 slices of gyro meat wrapped in a large pita you can get from the supermarket. The pita was very large and not even grilled so it was stiff and kept cracking. My first 2 bites were just pita. When I finally got the lettuce there was a hair in my pita. I could go no further. I am middle eastern and I am sorry that is not how you make lentil soup or falafel. Thus, my review may be a little bias and critical. I got the starter with the five choices; falafel hummus, baba ghanoush, salad, grape leaves. It was a huge appetizer and for a great price. I liked the baba ghanoush and the grape leaves the best! As I said above the falafel sucked. The service was not bad, however they served my chicken enter a little undercooked. The staff did their due diligence and corrected the issue though. The soup was amazing and best part of the meal! It's packed with flavor, fresh, and healthy. Although I give points for baked falafel, it just wasn't very good. It was a chunk of cardboard in my mouth, with no real taste. The baba ganoosh and hummus were good. The chicken kebab wrap was a bit dry and nothing special. If you get it, I recommend adding the baba ganoosh and hummus to the sandwich, the tahini sauce doesn't have enough flavor. Used to eat in fairly regularly and really enjoyed the food. Tonight I called in a take out order. 2 Kufta wraps, a falafel wrap, spinach pie, and 2 large greek salads. When I got home and unpacked the bags I found there was only 1 Kufta. I called and was told I was only charged for 1 and they didn't hear that I ordered 2. I opened the containers with the salad and was shocked. It was a styrofoam container filled with browning iceberg lettuce, 2 small pieces of tomato, about 10 pieces of onion (it looked like a slice of onion that someone had cut in half) maybe a tablespoon of Feta, and 4 ounces of dressing. Both salads were the same, and at $8 a piece, it was sad. Dinner for 3 totaled almost $40 but the only things that were edible were the Kufta, Falafel, and the Spinach pie - so only 2 people actually ate. read more

First time here. Dined alone because I just completed a training session nearby. Looked like a good idea but now I'm not sure. Tabouleh was delicious. I asked the waitress what she would recommend. She got stuck so I asked her what was the best thing. She steered me towards the special, a chicken curry with carrots, mushrooms, and potatoes. The chicken breast was dry and over cooked in a tasteless sauce with huge potato chunks, no other veggies visible. I sent it back and the waitress said she had to ask her boss. I insisted she take it off the table. Out comes her boss. He tried to become big and menacing, as if to intimidate me. When I told him I didn't like the curry, that the chicken was dry and the curry was bland, he raised his voice in an effort to make me feel bad. I asked him to replace the dish. He hemmed and hawed, said if I didn't like the curry I probably wouldn't like anything else. After I asked again, he suggested a marinated grilled chicken and rice pilaf. That was very good. The rest of the meal was good. Clean restaurant. Might come back. The owner still maintained that the curry was his most popular dish and that I didn't like it because I don't like curry. I told him that's not so, I love curry dishes but his chicken was dry and the curry was bland. I complimented him on his marinated chicken and he said that I probably like that because it was made with chicken thighs, not breast. I said you're probably right. Funny man. Cortland is not a place you'd have any reason to visit. It's a small, run down town in upstate New York that has a SUNY Campus and seemingly little else. Fortunately I have a friend who works here and when I came to visit, we hit The Pita Gourmet. One thing it does have, however, is some of the best Middle Eastern food I've ever eaten. Somehow, Hassima and Kazhaya Karam ended up here when the Lebanese civil war forced them to leave their homeland. Everyone in this town (I assume) has been rejoicing ever since. We got hummus, falafel and tabbouleh for our appetizer. Each was the best of its kind I've ever tasted. All were made on the premises from scratch. The lamb kebabs were also divine, but the bed of rice they came on might have been even better. And the baklava just melted in my mouth as I ate it. Maybe even gave off a hint of rosewater? I didn't ask because it didn't matter. This place might just be good enough to warrant a stop off Interstate 81 if you happen to be driving through. No, strike the "might be" and replace with "IS." read more

The Pita Gourmet is honestly THE best place for Baba Gannush. I have not found better ANYWHERE. I cry to my husband often about how I want the Pita Gourmet's Baba Gannush. I cannot find anything here in Buffalo that even compares. I wish i could get their recipe!!! If you are traveling on I-81, and want to stop for some food, and healthy food at that, this is a great stop!! I usually get a falafel sandwich (pretty close to perfect here!!) or the Shishtawooc (marinated chicken on skewers with rice) when I'm really hungry, and of course the Baba Gannush!! One of the best possible places to visit if you are looking for vegetarian & vegan options in Cortland. I grew up in Cortland and make it a point to eat here as often as possible when visiting with my family. The atmosphere is welcoming and the staff always remembers us and welcomes us back. They are so accommodating and make excellent recommendations. The food is incredibly fresh and flavorful. And though I love Cortland pizza it's nice to have some fresh, ethnic, healthier options. The Baba ganoush is amazing (love the lemon) The falafel is crispy and flavorful. I recommend trying a sampling to find your favorite.
