First, some non-food notes: * The views of Oaxaca from the rooftop are amazing (we went around sunset) * The ambience was perfect - there was enough hustle around the restaurant that it felt alive, yet it was quiet enough for us to enjoy our conversation all evening * Wait staff was super friendly, tending to our every need (and more... when we were trying to take a selfie with the view in the background, a server quickly came over and volunteered to take the photo). For each course, our server offered an explanation of everything on the plate. And when my wife accidentally dropped her knife on the ground, a server swooped over immediately to pick it up and in the same motion asked one of his colleagues to bring another knife. Now for the food: Overall amazing. My picky eater of a son ordered the tomato soup (which he refuses to eat at home) and said it was one of his favorite foods here. He rounded out his evening with the cacao dessert which was also amazing. My wife started with the taco of the day, which had otherworldly flavors (and was like 60 pesos), then proceeded with the pork and bok choy, which had a fantastic chimichurri sauce. I started with the watermelon tiradito and I have no idea how they packed so many flavors into one dish (and they all seemed to work!!). Then I had the brisket - I didn't love the mole, but the smoked plantain purée was delicious. I ended with the "Snow White" dessert, which was just fun. When it comes to food, presentation, wait staff, ambience and overall experience, I give our evening at Pitiona a 5/5!
Dinner service here was so incredibly slow a 3 hour meal could easily have been 1.5 hours. Maybe it's cause we sat at the highest rooftop location, which is like the furthest from the kitchen, but it was still painfully slow service. The view was fantastic and you can really see all around the city of Oaxaca. Taco tasting - 5 tacos. This alone was fairly filling and was overly ambitious considering the amount of food we had ordered before. Tacos weren't better than like normal street tacos, but they are more gourmet cause it has like braised beef. corn fungus (cuitlacoche)- this was probably the most memorable dish that I had. first time seeing the fungus on the corn husk and it was delicious salami sausage - oily, fatty, and thick. good if you like sausages. thinly sliced pork - not all that flavorful and a bit dry. tomato cheese ball soup - the cheese balls pop sort of like boba. the tomato bisque was good. would order this again. tomato salad
AMAZING FLAVORS, OUTSTANDING HOMOPHOBIA, & ABYSMAL COSTUMER SERVICE... Initially, upon our arrival, the ambiance suggested potential, though the initial seating placement felt... great. A swift, polite request for a superior vantage point--a balcony edge, naturally, for optimal sunset appreciation--was met with the grace of a server who clearly understood the assignment. However, this moment of refined satisfaction was quickly undercut. Enter Staff Captain (or manager) Axel Juarez, a figure whose demeanor suggested a profound misunderstanding of hospitality's nuances. His initial approach, an almost aggressive inquiry about our drink order, smacked of impatience, a trait unbecoming of a purveyor of fine dining. His subsequent, shall we say, tepid reaction to our request for a moment to peruse the menu spoke volumes. Important to mention that it was clear that he was not very fond of my flamboyant fabulous look. I love to serve a look and clearly his lack of appreciation showed, perhaps it was homophobia, who knows. Then, the pièce de résistance: the relocation debacle. We were informed, with an air of manufactured urgency, that our coveted balcony-edge table was reserved for a 7:30 marriage proposal. So we could stay there 40 min or move back. A noble cause, one might think, were it not for the conspicuous absence of any reservation signage and, more importantly, the utter lack of said reservation materializing. The "they're running late" excuse, delivered with the conviction of a third-rate dramatist, was, frankly, insulting to our intelligence. While we are paragons of understanding and champions of love, the blatant fabrication and subsequent preferential treatment of other patrons--specifically, the offering of a larger, previously denied table to 3 straight gentlemen did not escape our notice. Because here is the thing, the captain could have easily offered us that one table for 6, for just the 2 of us, but that would have been good costumer service, and that's not something I believe he knows about. This, coupled with the manager's initial frosty reception, painted a rather clear picture. Now, let's be clear: the food? Exquisite. The six-course tasting menu was a symphony of flavors, a testament to the kitchen's artistry. The cocktails? Impeccably crafted. The side of homophobia by the manager, next level too! The most divine cuisine cannot fully compensate for a side of thinly veiled prejudice served by a manager who seems to have confused his role with that of a gatekeeper of social norms. We, being the resilient denizens of Manhattan that we are, chose to indulge in dessert and further libations, turning this unfortunate display into a source of amusement. We are, after all, connoisseurs of the absurd. In conclusion, while the culinary experience was a resounding success, the service, or rather, the manager's performance, was a masterclass in how to alienate discerning clientele. Perhaps this establishment should consider investing in sensitivity training, or at the very least, a more convincing script for their fabricated reservations. The food is worth the trip, but be prepared for a side bad costumer service from the manager. It's 9:30 pm, no has sat at that one table yet. We could have easily had a great experience and the restaurant could have had a great review, but here we are.
Absolutely gorgeous views of Oaxaca from the rooftop patio. Food is tasty, some items can be hit or miss. Hot Appetizers: Chile Relleno - 5/5 Cold Appetizers: Pumpkin Cannelloni - 1/5 Soup and Salad: Cheeses Soup - 4/5 Tacos of the Day: Campechanos Tacos - 4/5 Desserts: Cacao - 4/5 The chile relleno was the best thing I ate here. Really amazing flavors and the duck meat inside was cooked perfectly. The pumpkin cannelloni was awful. No idea what was "pumpkin" about it. Cucumber and other veggies without flavor. Terrible. The cheese soup was delicious and a fun plating. They construct the soup in front of you with 3 ingredients. Super tasty. The tacos were delicious but lacking a little more flavor or spice for my taste. Presentation was cool. The dessert should've been phenomenal but I felt like with most items, it was lacking that extra flavor kick. Lots of textures with the dessert but I wish the chocolate would have popped more. It was muted. Service is amazing. Views are incredible up top on the patio.
The hostess starting off by asking us if we could leave the table by 830. She was speaking English so it was it sounded like she was asking us to come back at 8:30 for our 630 reservation. Finally we understood but a strange beginning to a wonderful meal. Fantastic ambience and magical food with amazing presentation! Definitely recommend coming here
Such a disappointment. I had normal expectations that a proper restaurant has to deliver. It didn't even meet a mediocre restaurant standards. As a starter I ordered tomato appetizer because the server recommended it. First of all the dish looked nothing like what they advertise it on their menu. And I am all about presentation. Anyway, I thought it might taste better at least. I was wrong. It literally had no taste. Zero, nada. I don't understand how it's possible to find a tomato that has no taste in Mexico. The dish had little sauce which would have been well with bread. I asked for bread several times and got it only after I finished the dish. Honestly, it's really bad. Save yourself disappointment and don't come here.
Went here for lunch, sat on the upper terrace with lovely views of the town and surrounding mountains. Restaurant has a cool aesthetic- tree slabs for benches and large tables, bubbling fountain in the wood paneled bar, sparsel but tasteful decor. Food was fab. Crispy taco bread with 2 fresh salsas, smoked vegetable and goat cheese salad with baby roasted vegetables and crunchy, honey coated nuts, crunchy rolls stuffed with crabmeat, dorado fish with green, citrusy mole sauce, corn soup. smoked octopus tacos. All perfectly prepared. Wait service was outstanding. Great takes on traditional Oaxacan food.
This place was excellent. The food was excellent, the service was excellent, the presentation was excellent. This was our 10 year anniversary and my wife who is a yelp elite had read great reviews about this place. So we decided to give it a go. We were greeted with some homemade corn tortillas and some homemade salsas. Usually we wouldn't waste space on tortillas but they were both excellent. The chef send us some ceviche which was amazing. I'm not sure if it's in the menu but I would order it if I went back there. We got a smoked salad with some great and unknown to us ingredients. I'm Mexican and I honestly didn't know what some of those ingredients were but they were very tasty. This was up there with some of the greatest salads I've ever gotten: We for the margarito, diablito, Jamaica botánica and a shot of mezcal all at different times during our dinner. My favorite drink was the diablito because it had some spicy ingredients. I think there was tamarindo and some homemade salt on the rim that was amazing. For main course we got the tacos de lechón and the cremoso de maíz. For what I understand the lechón was cooked and seasoned to perfection and later made into these long cubes of meat. The tacos and the cremoso de maíz both had these cubes which was a bit disappointing because even though the two dishes were very different they were 50% the same. However, like I said both dishes were excellent regardless. We had the choco mamey which was very flavorful and the perfect size. Again the server told us that the ice cream and the crunchy chips were made In house and it tastes super fresh. So why did I have this place 3 stars if everything was so good. Well one thing that really irked me was when I received the bill. We ordered water because we were thirsty. I think we had 4 small glasses of water. In our bill they had charged us 300 pesos for two bottles of water. To put it in perspective you can buy a liter or water for like 20 pesos and a bottle of ok tequila for 150 pesos. The water bottle was more expensive than any cocktail we ordered that night. I don't mind paying for drinks as you can see we like to drink. It just infuriated me when someone inflated prices specially for water. I much have rather bought shots of mezcal than drinking that water. The over all price was like 75 US dollars which is pennies in America. So it's not about the price it's about the principle. Don't over charge me for water for crying out loud. So over all it was a great experience and if wasn't for that whole water thing And the whole my plate having 50% of the same thing my wife had in hers i would have given them 5 stars. My wife gave them 5 stars but I pay attention to the little things.

If you can get a table outdoors on the top floor, the view of the cathedral and the overall night scene is absolutely amazing. You will have to climb a good amount of stairs to get up there. The servers are attentive. The food is good. Cocktails need some work. Dessert is average. Their chicken with mole is amazing. Their mole is by far one of the best in Oaxaca that I have tried. Their Aguachile pork appetizer is very flavorful and a must try. Overall a good experience. But will probably prefer to try other restaurants on my next trip here. read more

A MUST for the best sunset views and cocktails. My husband and I made a reservation at 6:30pm and it was perfect to have a few apps, cocktails and catch the sunset. The restaurant is located on the side of the road, but they take you 3 flights of stairs to the top patio. Your get a gorgeous view of the church as well as the mountains. I ordered a mocktail with passion fruit, and it was so delicious. They also gave chips and salsa, pickled veggies and an amuse bouche. My husband and I shared a bone marrow appetizer. To me honest, it was too expensive for what we got. Overall recommend stopping by for a picture and a drink or two read more

THE BIG: Located across from Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzman. This resaturant is gigantic and you must visit the rooftop to get the full experience. Street parking available on the streets that allow cars, otherwise you have to walk here. THE BLACK AND WHITE: The wife and I had a sunset reservation and it did not disappoint! Walking up to the rooftop did take a bit. There were around four flights of stairs but it was scenic with an open air staircase that peered down into the center of the building. For food and drinks we got water (of course), a oaxacan beer, a mocktail, bone marrow taco, and a mezcal to do a bone marrow shot. The oaxacan beer was delicious and the bone marrow taco was tiny but was presented beautifully. When you order a mezcal, they get you the good stuff and it's generally a sipper. I was a degenerate and luged my mezcal shot. It was a very good spirit to say the least. THE FINAL BAMBOO: Overall we spent around 900 MXN on our dinner meal. Beautiful rooftop views of Oaxaca City along with great food presentation and ambiance. read more

Delicious food and prompt service! Was able to book a table for 8 a few days prior which was extremely difficult in most places. Unfortunately the frog top was closed for a private event but we were unbothered as the company we had, the service, and the food were top notch! read more

I can't begin to mention how amazing this restaurant is. We got a citrus ceviche, pork tacos, rib eye chicharron, and a bunello and coconut dessert. The best pork tacos we had our whole 11 day trip. The service is impeccable and dishes are beautiful. I highly recommend our desserts, however everything was great. read more

My husband and I wanted to have a fancy meal while we were in Oaxaca. We made reservations for a Saturday night. We were a few minutes early but we were seated right away. The restaurant is nicely decorated inside and quite large. I did use the bathroom while there and it was very clean. Our server started us off with drinks. I ordered a cocktail with jamaica and my husband ordered el diablito. Mine was pretty and delicious if you like sweet drinks (though not overly sweet). The diablito also tasted good and had a little kick to it. We also had shots of mezcal during our meal- can't go wrong there! We started with the ceviche which tasted great. The detail in the preparation was apparent. We also shared the ensalada ahumeada (smoked salad). They brought it out covered with a clear glass and then opened it at the table so you could see the smoke. The salad had a wonderful smoky flavor. I've never had a salad like this before! For the main dish, I ordered the lechon tacos, which came with three little tacos. It was topped with crumbled chicharrones and had avocado foam. I kindly shared it with my husband but honestly would have eaten it all myself if I wasn't so nice. The lechon was juicy. The flavor was amazing. Some of the best tacos I've ever had. My husband's dish was good but the lechon tacos were the star. We ended our meal with some type of chocolate dessert which had delicate wafers and ice cream. Overall we had an amazing meal. Everything was delicious. Our server was friendly and helpful. We had a lot of questions and she explained everything to us. I would definitely recommend enjoying a meal here. read more

Made a reservation here on a whim because it was on OpenTable. Researched a little more beforehand and saw the terrace and food was amongst the most sought out in Oaxaca. Save your time/money. While the view is very nice, the service is terrible. Upon being seated, we ordered a mezcal cocktail and wine. While waiting for our drinks, we proceeded to order two soups and main courses. Our soups arrived before our drinks ever came. It took asking two different waiters for our drinks and finishing our soup before they were served. The soups were good, but nothing extraordinary. We waited even longer to be served our main courses, which again, were good, but nothing extraordinary. We would have liked to order a second round of drinks, but were never asked so we proceeded to order dessert/carajillos. Both took over 20 minutes to be served. When asking for the check, it took another 10 minutes to be closed after providing our check. TL;DR: great view, terrible service, OK food read more

We went for lunch on Sunday, and like the rest of the neighborhood, it was very quiet. It was still very good service and equally good flavors. Probably the best flavors of all our meals so far in Oaxaca. The space is very airy, bright and modern feeling. We even appreciated the plates and glasses they used -- modern and upscale, but not fussy. That pretty much sums up our experience. I'd highly recommend this restaurant read more

Clean modern design within a building as old as the rest of central Oaxaca. Crisp tortillas, pickled veggies and salsas are provided before your food arrives. For appetizers we tried the isthmian molotes. Pitona's take on moletes includes coping them with toasted goat cheese. These were excellent and everyone at our table loved them. We also got the memelas with shrimp which had excellent flavor, texture and presentation. For my main course I ordered the poblano fish, nuts and marinated mushrooms. This dish can be absolutely amazing as I noted when I tasted a bite from my dining companion before deciding to order it myself. However, when my order arrived, the fish was tough and over cooked. If it wasn't for this I would have given Pitiona full marks. read more

We were in town for vacation - Pitiona was recommended in various web sites as one of the best, let me start by saying they stood up to the expectations. My first experience in the place was for lunch around 3PM - the portions were enough for 2 people with a ceviche as an appetizer followed by some pork tacos and an pork ear risotto with mole coloradito. I found the mezcal-based mixology very good, tasting Negroni, Beso Rojo, Margarito and a mango martini, also based on mezcal. The bad thing is that our first options although they were listed on the menu as available the waiter did not know that they had run out of certain ingredients and notified us until after taking the order when they notified him in the kitchen. Pitiona is a SPECTACULAR restaurant just a block east from the Santo Domingo Church. Chef Jose Manuel has created an elegant environment in a colonial dining area with an innovative cocktail menu. The service is exquisite as is the attention to detail. The wooden tables remind you of the connection to the local community. We really struggled at this restaurant, and it was our first real struggle anywhere due to the language barrier. It is hard to interpret a modern noveau menu when you cannot communicate with your server. Alas, we made it through and enjoyed an incredible meal. We split several cocktails. They were more expensive than they have been elsewhere (90 to 120 pesos), but they are still only $4.50 to $6. A great deal. We had a mezcal martini with jamaica flowers as well as a mezcal Negroni. They were both well crafted cocktails, but I preferred the Negroni. We followed these up with an Antequera, which was mezcal, lemon juice, cucumber and herba santa. It was verdant, light and refreshing. We also had a Quico, which was mezcal with tamarind, lime and chile powder. This one was served table side over a form of crushed ice in a gourd. I took a video - totally awesome. Here, the meal begins with crispy tortillas al horno . They are served with rojo and verde salsas as well as pickled onions and carrots. The salsas were incredibly fresh - the rojo was almost sweet from tomato and the verde had a nice roasted flavor from the tomatillo preparation. Our first bite was an amuse bouche. A little square of focaccia that was topped with tomato, olive, cheese and chicarron (I think). The focaccia was a little chewy from the toasting, but it was a great base for the sweet and salty topping. We shared Ash Battered Cauliflower, which was served over mole verde and squash, tomatoes, carrots and onions and topped with purslane. This is the best cauliflower that we have ever had. It was tender and had this smokey crust over a verdant and fresh mole. Price tag? 210 pesos or $10.50 - crazy good deal. Even though it was an entrée, our sopa and appetizer came next - I think because they were richer than this dish. The soup (150 pesos or $7.50) was a fried soft shell crab on crema and cheese topped with black bean puree seasoned with hoja santa. Delicious. The appetizer was shrimp memelas (165 pesos or $8.25), which were little hand formed corn cakes about the size of silver dollar pancakes topped with chichilo mole sauce, little sautéed shrimp and prensa cheese. OMG. The sweet shrimp with the deeply flavor mole atop the sweet corn cakes with the salty cheese were an amazing combination. The service is exquisite - very formal with a crazy attention to detail. The restaurant is beautiful. The food is inventive. I cannot recommend Chef Jose Manuel's restaurant enough. read more
Recommended by one of my boss, Pitiona is a high-end restaurant in Oaxaca city, offer ing some of the fine dining Oxacan cuisine. The ambience at the restaurant is nice. Although the kitchen closes at 11 pm, we went to the restaurant at 10:30 and ordered food before the kitchen closes. That's okay and we stayed longer later than 11. I ordered soup, avocado duck and had a glass of red wine called Petite Serah. The wine tastes like Merlot and easy to drink. At the beginning, the restaurant gave us appetizer of little tuna, with cheese and caramelized peanut. It wasn't much but it was meant to cleanse the taste pallette after the tostadas. My avocado duck was very good. It came in three pieces, roasted and covered with avocado and guacamole. If you don't mind paying for the high price, the dishes are quite nice. read more

Quite possibly one of the most indulgent forays into feasting i have ever experienced. A journey through twelve courses with paired cocktails, beers, wines and deserts that would have made Bacchus blush. I basically lost recollection after about course nine but was told that chef (who sat with us and smoked Malboroughs throughout our meal), told the waitstaff in Spanish that he wanted us all wasted by the end of the dinner. The meal was orchestrated around cacao and I can only point you in the direction of the pictures as I don't have much recollection other than profound satisfaction that borders on the erotic. read more
