On Wednesday we had a 7 course tasting w drink pairing at the tiny 6-table Teocintle Tika'aya and if there is a single place one should eat at in Oaxaca, this is it. My descriptions don't do the dishes justice as each one had 10+ ingredients - just an amazing experience! App - guacamole, chapulin salsa and kimchi 1 - tempura squash blossom filled with huitlacoche pate and steak tartare [fermented pineapple w coconut foam] - the tempura was one of the best bites I've ever had! 2- beef tongue on a tri-colored tostada w dehydrated beets and onion puree [penicillin] 3 - shrimp aguachile cured in grapefruit w habanero chile oil [artisenal beer] 4 - cream of oyster w fried mushrooms, smoked salmon, carrot puree, squash blossom and epazote leaf chimichurri ['hanky panky'] 5 - purple yam and lechon picadillo gyoza with roasted beet and peanut/almond mole [campari] 6 - poleo (mint) granita with passionfruit and hibiscus puree, beet powder and mescal foam 7 - 'ecosystem' - brownie with mushroom powder, spongecake w spinach 'chlorophyll', passionfruit gelatin, pomelo & pineapple ice, and juniper & gin foam Our server was Lily and she was also our bartender. She did a fantastic job remembering what was in every dish and provided superb service throughout the night. The chef here is a freaking wizard. Reservation confirmed for 1:00 PM, but the restaurant only opens at 1:30 PM--no seating until then. We were also only told upon arrival that they accept cash only, no credit cards, which is unacceptable for a tasting menu restaurant, especially one that's Michelin-recommended. I came here with a friend and enjoyed the atrium-like ambiance with pretty pastel painted tables. I tried my first tlayuda here- a large crispy tortilla topped with lard, black bean sauce, cheese and other fillings. This one was served folded but most are served flat. Flavor was very good. I crumbled my chorizo and added it in. Very tasty and not too salty or spicy. They also had one of the best slightly effervescent lemonades I've ever had. Tart, not too sweet? Personalized happiness - that's what this is! The place is small, just a handful of tables, with an equally small staff (affect, it's two peoples in the kitchen, and one serving). But boy howdy, is the food ever good! It's a fixed menu (adjusted for allergies), with a bunch of small portions. I hesitate to call it a "tasting menu", as it's basically small portions of excellence based on what they've managed to get at the market. You're never stressed out at the prospect of having to force Yet Another Course down your gullet, and you'll leave feeling happy! Phenomenal experience. Indigenous tasting menu restaurant where the menu changes daily, depending on what the chef discovers at the market that day. It's just a handful of tables inside a single room. It feels like a garage although the environment is charming. Delicious. We had 5 savory courses and 2 desserts. Everything was excellent with extremely unique ingredients and distinct tastes. Extremely affordable. $35/person which includes several alcoholic drink pairings. Make a reservation since it's such a small space. FYI: It's located in the middle of nowhere, away from the rest of the hustle and bustle. Highly recommended! Oaxaca City has wonderful restaurants but not too many with tasting menu offerings. You won't be disappointed here. read more

Okay, WOW. I've eaten all over this renown foodie town over three years. This is NOT to be missed. I rarely leave reviews - only for out of the way places I really want to promote. This clearly fits the bill. They specialize in traditional comal-cooked food made from street market produce they select every day. I peeked in the kitchen. No electricity. 100% indigenous kitchen. There is no menu or prices. They just ask for food allergies, the return with 5 amazing courses. Expect about US$30/person. The whole restaurant is more or less in the hall that leads to the kitchen, which makes sense because they need the open air courtyard to cook over open fire. On my visit, everything was vegetarian except a sushi-sized piece of fish. They started me off with a tamal wrapped in hoja santa. The masa was so light it was like whipped potato. Next came a tetela with huitlacoche and quesillo and a delicious chile I couldn't place. Next the soup. OMG. Savory, spicy, salty. They say it was made from garbanzos, but I couldn't tell. Fourth round was fish in mole amarillo, but it was really an orange spicy mole that didn't have the strong hoja santa flavor of typical amarillo. It was insanely good. They say Oaxaca has 7 moles, but they are just the starting point for creative chefs, and these are definitely that. Lastly, desert was a "playful contrast of squash textures" to translate my waiter's Spanish. The squash was complex and sweet in sauce, julienned, comal-roasted and steamed. These young chefs are every bit as talented as you will find at Pitiona or Danzantes, but they lack the "fine dining" upscale dining room experience. Very intimate and casual. Latin electrónica music wafts from the kitchen. The toilet was broken. That just tells you what they really care about. The food. read more

This is Michelin worthy food. Presentation, creativity, and execution are all top notch. It's quite surprising that they seem to still be more of a hidden gem rather than a must-try experience, but I recommend you take advantage and get in before everyone else catches up. This food was very good and also very very expensive $3000 pesos or $150 dollars for two people for a tasting menu not including tip and drinks. They no longer include alcohol tastes as part of the menu as an earlier reviewer mentioned. Expect to pay $8 for a shot of a lesser quality of mezcal. We settled on the "cheaper" option of $5 craft beers. When my husband (who speaks fluent Spanish) asked for the price of the Mezcal he had to ask 3 times before they would tell him. There was a weird not very friendly vibe in the restaurant that was so different than we get from other restaurants and people in Oaxaca. They do not have menus and do not tell you how much anything is before hand. We were expecting the price of $30 per person for the tasting menu based on Yelp reviews from 9 months ago and so were very surprised when we received the bill. We were hoping for a wonderful experience for our anniversary dinner and although we very much enjoyed the talent and expertise of the chefs we ended up with a bad taste in our mouth, not from the food, but feeling tricked by the pricing. Why not just tell people what to expect if that's what you feel in your heart is your value? Why not be proud of your value? Why hide it? A strange experience overall. read more

Teocintle is OUTSTANDING. We walked by and decided to check it out...and we are so glad we did. This is an experience more than just a meal. The chefs will talk to you about the history, origins and how each plate came to fruition. The menu changes daily depending on what the chefs find at the market that day. The food is insane to say the least. Now to the beverages...this is where it gets NUTS. They give you a different water with each course. The water is inspired on local flavors and experiences that the local people have. When we were there, they gave us "river water". As soon as I took a sip...I was transported to my childhood in a summer camp drinking water straight from the river. The prices are really reasonable. They do not have a menu because the cost of the menu changes depending on what they bought that day. Our experience was $500 pesos for 2 people. They told us they opened about 3 months ago so no wonder why there is no yelp reviews yet. Go try it before it explodes lol. read more

Make sure to ask for price beforehand. They tried to charge us $800 pesos for each meal. The food mediocre at best. The salsa had no salt. There was too many dishes with chapulines when chapulines aren't in season until the end of summer. A lot of the courses were fruit based, like a platano with chorizo which wasn't a good combination. Another was mango with seaweed and also didn't taste good. One was a Memelita which I can buy on the street for about 10 pesos. Overall I was not impressed. The food was overpriced and the flavors were not at all cohesive. They put a nice presentation to trick people into spending a ridiculous amount of money. Spend your money elsewhere. read more

Really lovely little place. Just four tables in a courtyard. No menu. You get served a 5 course meal which choice of main with fresh local ingredients.... like an heirloom tomato and strawberry salad and a nice steak. For only 250 pesos. Really delicious. Fresh herbal water is also served to complement the food. A little hidden gem I highly recommend. read more
